For an eligible non-gazetted Railway employee, the 78-day Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) is calculated from Basic Pay plus eligible Dearness Allowance (DA), subject to a monthly wage ceiling of ₹7,000:
PLB = min(Basic Pay + eligible DA, ₹7,000) × 78 ÷ 30.4
The current Railway Board/Press Information Bureau notification sets the maximum payment at ₹17,951 per eligible employee for 78 days. That is a notified maximum, not an automatic payment to every Railway worker. Your actual amount can be lower if your Basic Pay plus eligible DA is below ₹7,000 or if service-period and other conditions reduce the entitlement.
The 78-day Railway bonus formula
The Railway bonus is formally called the Productivity Linked Bonus. For the current annual order, the calculation uses the wages recognized for PLB during the relevant financial year:

PLB = min(Basic Pay + eligible DA, ₹7,000) × 78 ÷ 30.4
Each part of the formula has a specific meaning:
- Basic Pay: Basic pay as defined under the Railway Services (Revised Pay) Rules, 2016.
- Eligible DA: Dearness Allowance drawn during the financial year.
- ₹7,000 ceiling: If Basic Pay plus eligible DA exceeds ₹7,000 in a month, only ₹7,000 is used as the monthly PLB wage for this calculation.
- 78: The number of days of wages sanctioned as PLB.
- 30.4: The divisor used in the Railway calculation convention to convert the monthly wage into a daily amount before applying 78 days.
The phrase “without any ceiling on wages for eligibility” in Railway Board order RBE No. 104/2025 means that wages above ₹7,000 do not disqualify an employee. The ₹7,000 limit still applies when the amount is calculated.
Worked calculations
Example 1: Basic Pay plus DA of ₹6,000
If your recognized Basic Pay plus eligible DA is ₹6,000 per month:
- Compare ₹6,000 with the ₹7,000 ceiling. The usable wage remains ₹6,000.
- Multiply by 78: ₹6,000 × 78 = ₹4,68,000.
- Divide by 30.4: ₹4,68,000 ÷ 30.4 = approximately ₹15,394.74.
Payroll may apply the rounding convention in the applicable order, so the credited figure can differ by a small amount from a calculator result containing paise.
Example 2: Basic Pay plus DA of exactly ₹7,000
At ₹7,000, the ceiling is reached:
₹7,000 × 78 ÷ 30.4 = approximately ₹17,960.53
The current notification states a maximum of ₹17,951. Use ₹17,951 as the notified maximum rather than replacing it with an independently rounded arithmetic result.
Example 3: Basic Pay plus DA above ₹7,000
Suppose your Basic Pay is ₹30,000 and eligible DA is ₹15,000, giving recognized wages of ₹45,000. The calculation does not use ₹45,000:

min(₹45,000, ₹7,000) × 78 ÷ 30.4
The ceiling substitutes ₹7,000, so the entitlement is limited to the notified maximum of ₹17,951, subject to eligibility and any service-period adjustment.

| Basic Pay plus eligible DA | Amount used after ceiling | 78-day arithmetic result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹4,000 | ₹4,000 | Approximately ₹10,263.16 | Below the ceiling, so the lower wage determines PLB. |
| ₹5,000 | ₹5,000 | Approximately ₹12,829.00 | Below the ceiling. |
| ₹6,000 | ₹6,000 | Approximately ₹15,394.74 | Below the ceiling. |

| More than ₹7,000 | ₹7,000 | Approximately ₹17,960.53 | Calculation remains capped; current notification maximum is ₹17,951. |
The table shows the mathematical convention. The Railway Board order for the relevant financial year controls the final payable amount, including rounding and any adjustment for incomplete service.
Is Railway bonus calculated on Basic Pay or Basic Pay plus DA?
It is not calculated on Basic Pay alone. The Railway Board definition includes Basic Pay and DA drawn during the financial year. Start with the Basic Pay recognized under the 2016 Revised Pay Rules, add the eligible DA for the applicable period, and then apply the ₹7,000 monthly ceiling.
Do not automatically add every amount on a payslip. The PLB wage definition cited in the order identifies Basic Pay and DA; other allowances, reimbursements, overtime, and benefits should not be included unless the applicable Railway instruction specifically treats them as part of PLB wages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich financial year and DA figure should you use?
PLB is sanctioned for a particular financial year. The DA used is the DA drawn during that financial year, not necessarily the DA rate shown on the month you check your payslip. If Basic Pay or DA changed during the year, payroll calculations may reflect the applicable amounts and the period for which they were drawn.
For a personal estimate, gather the Basic Pay and eligible DA records for the whole financial year covered by the current order. A single month’s payslip can be a useful starting point, but it may not represent the year if you received a promotion, increment, transfer-related pay change, or a DA revision.
Who is covered by the 78-day PLB?
The 14 October 2026 Press Information Bureau release says the current 78-day payment covers about 11.40 lakh eligible non-gazetted Railway employees. Examples named in the release include:

RPF and RPSF exclusion
The cited Railway orders exclude all Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF) personnel from this PLB sanction. If you serve in one of those forces, do not apply the 78-day calculation to yourself without a separate order establishing entitlement.
Service status and other conditions
Being non-gazetted or working in a listed category is not the only test. The applicable Railway Board order and departmental records can affect entitlement through service-period requirements, qualifying service, leave, appointment or retirement dates, disciplinary status, and other conditions. The formula estimates the amount once you are confirmed as an eligible employee; it does not decide eligibility by itself.
Why the maximum is ₹17,951 instead of the calculator result
Applying the displayed formula to ₹7,000 gives approximately ₹17,960.53 when calculated with 30.4. The current notification nevertheless states, in words, that “The maximum amount payable per eligible railway employee is Rs.17,951/- for 78 days.” The notified amount is the controlling maximum.
This difference can arise from the way the official order applies its wage, daily-rate, and rounding conventions. Employees should therefore use the formula to understand the calculation and use ₹17,951 as the ceiling stated in the annual sanction. Do not argue for a higher payment merely because a spreadsheet produces ₹17,960.53.

- Confirm the order year. Identify the Railway Board or government release covering the financial year for which the bonus is being paid.
- Confirm eligibility. Check that you are in an eligible non-gazetted category and are not excluded by the order, including the stated RPF/RPSF exclusion.
- Collect pay data. Record Basic Pay under the 2016 Revised Pay Rules and the eligible DA drawn during the relevant financial year.
- Determine the monthly PLB wage. Add Basic Pay and eligible DA for the applicable period. If the result exceeds ₹7,000, replace it with ₹7,000 for the PLB calculation.
- Apply the 78-day factor. Multiply the capped wage by 78 and divide by 30.4.
- Apply the official maximum and payroll rules. For the current order, no full-year calculation can exceed ₹17,951. Payroll then applies the order’s rounding and any service-period adjustment.
- Compare with the payslip. If the credited amount differs, ask your establishment or accounts section which wage period, service fraction, rounding rule, or eligibility condition was used.
A spreadsheet or calculator formula
For a full-year estimate, enter the recognized monthly Basic Pay in cell A2 and eligible DA in cell B2. A spreadsheet expression for the capped calculation is:
=MIN(A2+B2,7000)*78/30.4
To show the current notified ceiling as a hard limit, use:

These formulas assume the Basic Pay and DA figures represent the same eligible period. They do not calculate partial-year service, leave-based adjustments, or other conditions in the Railway order.
Payment timing
The 14 October 2026 PIB release says payment is made before the Durga Puja/Dussehra holidays. The prior-year PIB release dated 24 September 2025 described the same timing for the 2024–25 PLB. “Before the holidays” is a scheduling commitment, not a universal credit date for every zone, division, or bank account. Local payroll processing can determine when the amount appears.
What changed between the 2024–25 and 2025–26 approvals?
The available government releases describe the same core structure for both years: 78 days, a ₹7,000 wage ceiling for calculation, and a ₹17,951 maximum.
| Comparison point | Financial year 2024–25 | Financial year 2025–26 |
|---|---|---|
| Approval source | PIB release dated 24 September 2025 | PIB release dated 14 October 2026 |
| PLB duration | 78 days | 78 days |
| Calculation wage ceiling | ₹7,000 per month | ₹7,000 per month |
| Notified maximum | ₹17,951 per employee | ₹17,951 per employee |

Always use the order for the exact financial year in question. A future sanction can change the number of days, ceiling, maximum, eligible categories, or conditions.

Using Basic Pay without DA
Leaving out eligible DA understates the PLB wage. The order includes both components.
Using the entire salary
Gross salary is not the formula. Start with Basic Pay and eligible DA; do not add every allowance merely because it appears on the payslip.
Ignoring the ₹7,000 ceiling
Employees with high Basic Pay do not receive 78 days of their full salary. Wages above ₹7,000 are treated as ₹7,000 for this calculation.

Treating ₹17,951 as a universal bonus
₹17,951 is the current notified maximum. Employees below the wage ceiling, with incomplete qualifying service, or outside the eligible categories can receive less or no payment.
Using the current month’s DA for the entire year
The order refers to DA drawn during the financial year. A mid-year DA revision or pay change can make a single-month estimate inaccurate.
Rounding the arithmetic upward
A calculator’s ₹17,960.53 result does not override the notification’s ₹17,951 maximum. Follow the official figure and payroll rounding.
Assuming every Railway employee is covered
The sanction is for eligible non-gazetted employees and specifically excludes RPF/RPSF personnel. Confirm your service status before estimating.
How to check a difference between your estimate and your payment
Use a written reconciliation rather than comparing only the final rupee figure. Ask your accounts or establishment section for:
- The financial year and PLB order applied.
- The Basic Pay and DA amounts used, with the months or period covered.
- The wage ceiling applied to each relevant period.
- The number of qualifying days or service fraction credited.
- The rounding method and any statutory or authorized adjustment.
- The reason for any exclusion, withholding, or recovery.
Keep copies of payslips, service records, appointment or retirement dates, and the PLB sanction. If the department confirms that the wrong Basic Pay, DA period, or service fraction was used, request correction through the normal Railway payroll grievance channel.
What the ₹2,009.61-crore outlay means
The 14 October 2026 government release estimates an overall outlay of ₹2,009.61 crore for about 11.40 lakh eligible employees. Dividing that outlay by the employee count would produce an average, but that average would not be an entitlement formula: individual payments vary with the capped wage, qualifying service, and applicable conditions. The only amount that can be used as your personal ceiling from that release is ₹17,951, not an average derived from the national total.

Quick self-check
- Am I an eligible non-gazetted Railway employee for the stated financial year?
- Am I outside the RPF/RPSF exclusion?
- Have I used Basic Pay under the 2016 Revised Pay Rules?
- Have I added eligible DA drawn during the relevant financial year?
- Did I cap the monthly PLB wage at ₹7,000?
- Did I multiply by 78 and divide by 30.4?
- Did I treat ₹17,951 as the current notified maximum rather than a guaranteed payment?
- Have I allowed for service period, leave, rounding, and other order conditions?
Bottom line on the 78-day Railway bonus
Take your eligible Basic Pay plus DA, cap that monthly wage at ₹7,000, multiply by 78, and divide by 30.4. A ₹6,000 wage produces approximately ₹15,394.74; ₹7,000 or more reaches the current order’s maximum of ₹17,951. Eligibility, qualifying service, the relevant financial year, and the Railway Board’s detailed conditions determine what is actually credited.
