To calculate whether a mini PC will pay for itself as a 24/7 YouTube stream host, measure its average power draw while running your actual setup, price that electricity using your own tariff, and compare the PC’s total cost with a specific alternative. Divide the upfront extra cost by annual net savings. If the alternative costs no more—or the comparison produces no positive annual benefit—there is no payback under that calculation.
Measure the mini PC’s real streaming power use
Use a plug-in electricity monitor to measure power at the wall while the mini PC runs the stream configuration you intend to use. Include the computer and any peripherals that will remain on for the stream. If the monitor reports energy over time, run it long enough to represent ordinary operation; if the workload varies, measure representative periods and use a defensible average.
- Measure the configured workload, including the encoder if the PC is encoding video.
- Do not use the power adapter’s rated wattage as the computer’s consumption. It is not an average wall-draw measurement.
- Record the measurement method and workload. Idle draw is not a substitute for draw during an active stream.
No model-specific mini PC measurement establishes a universal 24/7 streaming draw. Annual kWh = average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × 8,760
Annual electricity cost = annual kWh × your all-in electricity price per kWh
For example, MiniPCLab’s illustrative calculation for a 10 W device at $0.12/kWh is $10.51 per year. That is an example derived from its formula, not a measured streaming-PC result. Your own bill and measured draw should replace both inputs. MiniPCLab’s calculation method
As a dated U.S. reference only, the Energy Information Administration reported an average residential price proxy of 18.31 cents per kWh for July 2026. It describes the figure as average revenues per kWh; it is not your individual tariff, and U.S. retail prices vary by state and market. Build the full cost over your ownership period
Electricity is only one part of the purchase. Pick a realistic ownership horizon, such as the number of years you expect to keep the PC in service, then total costs attributable to that setup:

- Mini PC purchase price and any required RAM or storage configuration.
- Essential peripherals, such as a display or input devices if you need them for setup or maintenance.
- Electricity for the measured operating load over the selected period.
- Measurement equipment, setup expenses, and any service charges that apply.
Total cost over horizon = purchase and setup costs + electricity over horizon + other attributable costs
Use the same horizon and include comparable operating costs for the alternative. Do not assume a particular mini PC street price or lifespan without current, applicable evidence.
Choose a real baseline before calculating payback
A mini PC pays back only relative to something it replaces or a defensible incremental benefit it creates. Calculate both options on the same basis and time horizon. Common baselines include an existing desktop that would otherwise run the stream, another computer purchase, a hosted or VPS service, or not running the stream at all.

For a local setup, workload matters: encoding, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and upload capacity affect what the computer and connection must sustain. A processor specification alone does not prove that a particular mini PC can handle your chosen encode reliably. YouTube supports encoder software on a computer as well as standalone hardware encoders; creators configure the encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and key. Follow YouTube’s encoder guidance for supported settings, choose a quality your internet connection can sustain, test upload bitrate and stream behavior, and monitor stream health. Then compare the upfront incremental investment with those savings:
Payback period in years = upfront incremental cost ÷ annual net savings
For a replacement purchase, the upfront incremental cost is generally the mini PC’s purchase and setup cost after subtracting any upfront cost you would have incurred for the alternative. Keep recurring operating costs in the annual comparison rather than hiding them in the upfront figure.
If annual net savings are zero or negative, there is no payback under that comparison. If streaming revenue is part of the case, count only incremental net contribution after applicable fees and operating costs. Monetization eligibility, gross revenue, views, or hoped-for future ad income do not guarantee savings or profit.

Check whether the assumptions make the result useful
- Power: Is the reading from the wall while the intended stream setup was running?
- Tariff: Does the electricity price reflect your own bill and applicable charges rather than a national average?
- Baseline: Is there a real alternative cost that the purchase avoids, or a concrete incremental benefit?
- Horizon: Does the selected ownership period match how long you expect to use the system?
- Reliability and maintenance: Have you considered upload outages, recovery, and the operator time needed for local hardware, without assigning unsupported dollar values?
- Uncertainty: Would a different measured draw, tariff, or service charge materially change the result?
There is no universal payback period: measured workload, electricity tariff, purchase cost, baseline, service charges, and any actual revenue differ from one setup to another.
