For a stream averaging R Mbps, estimate continuous use in decimal gigabytes with R × 10.8 × D, where D is the number of days. For a 30-day month, use 324 × R GB. For example, a constant 1 Mbps stream uses about 324 GB in 30 days—roughly 302 GiB. This is a calculated estimate of the media stream, not a guarantee of actual YouTube or household data use.

Calculate your 24/7 stream’s monthly data use

Substitute the stream’s average bitrate in megabits per second (Mbps) and the number of days in your billing period:

Decimal GB = average Mbps × 10.8 × days

A continuous day has 86,400 seconds. Converting megabits to bytes and then to decimal gigabytes gives 10.8 GB per day for every 1 Mbps of average bitrate.

Average bitrate Daily use, 24 hours 30-day estimate
1 Mbps 10.8 GB 324 GB (about 302 GiB)
5 Mbps 54 GB 1,620 GB (1.62 TB decimal)

These are arithmetic scenarios assuming the stated average rate stays constant. They are not measurements or guarantees of YouTube usage. Round up for planning and allow headroom for bitrate changes and other devices using the connection.

Use your billing period’s actual number of days

Months are not all 30 days. At average bitrate R, a 28-day period is 302.4 × R decimal GB; a 31-day period is 334.8 × R decimal GB. Use the number of days in your internet plan’s billing period rather than assuming a calendar month always has 30 days.

Choose a realistic bitrate for the estimate

The key input is the stream’s average delivered bitrate, not the maximum speed of your internet connection. Resolution alone cannot give a dependable monthly data figure: there is no universal current YouTube bitrate for each resolution established here. If you need a close estimate, observe the data used during a representative period on the same device and connection, then scale it to the hours or days you expect to watch.

YouTube adjusts playback quality based on viewing conditions, including connection speed, player or screen size, the quality of the original upload, and browser support. Available formats also vary by video and device. YouTube describes its quality choices as Auto, Higher picture quality, Data saver, and Advanced; higher picture quality uses more data, while Data saver lowers picture quality. These settings do not promise a fixed bitrate or monthly cap. YouTube’s playback-quality guidance explains the options.

Adjust YouTube’s quality settings

  1. In the YouTube app, set a quality preference for mobile networks and Wi-Fi, or open the current video’s quality controls to adjust playback for that video.
  2. For an ongoing estimate, keep the same device, connection, and viewing conditions during your measurement period; changing quality or device can change the delivered rate.

Data saver can reduce picture quality, but it does not fix an exact data amount. Playback quality may still depend on viewing conditions and which formats the video supports.

Understand GB, GiB, and what the formula leaves out

The calculation uses decimal units: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Some devices and usage reports instead show binary gibibytes (GiB), where 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes. That is why 324 decimal GB is about 302 GiB; the underlying amount is the same, but the unit differs.

The formula estimates the media stream at the assumed average rate. It does not guarantee to include every bit of network-protocol overhead, traffic from other household devices, or other use on the connection. Actual totals can therefore differ from the estimate.

Check the terms of your Indian broadband plan

Compare the estimate with the allowance and fair-usage terms for your specific connection. Broadband packages can have different download limits. TRAI says providers must clearly specify their fair-usage limit and the speed after that limit is exhausted, and advises subscribers to choose a package suited to expected use. It also says it does not prescribe a minimum broadband download or upload speed; providers must indicate typical speeds in their tariff offerings. See the TRAI Broadband FAQ.

  • Check the plan’s data allowance or fair-usage threshold.
  • Check the speed available after the threshold is reached.
  • Confirm the billing-period dates and where usage is counted, such as on the router connection or an individual device.
  • Do not assume that a plan described as “unlimited” keeps full speed for unlimited video; read its disclosed threshold and terms.

Jio likewise notes that higher-resolution video consumes more data and that actual consumption can vary by service or website, including YouTube. Check the provider’s current terms for your plan rather than relying on a generalized allowance or price. Jio’s data-usage guidance discusses video consumption.

Why older hourly figures are not a reliable monthly promise

A response hosted by TRAI to a 2017 consultation gave test examples of 250 MB for one hour of non-HD video and 2 GB for one hour of HD video. Those are historical examples in a submitted response, not a current YouTube guarantee or a universal rate for a given resolution. They should not be used as a promise of what every 24/7 stream consumes today. The TRAI-hosted 2017 consultation response provides that historical context.
