Calculate forward EV/EBIT by dividing a company’s enterprise value by its forecast EBIT for a clearly specified future period: Forward EV/EBIT = enterprise value ÷ forecast EBIT. EBIT is operating profit before interest and taxes. State the valuation date, forecast horizon, estimate source, and how you built enterprise value so readers can interpret and compare the result.
How do you calculate forward EV/EBIT?
Use enterprise value at a stated valuation date as the numerator, and the matching forecast operating profit as the denominator. For example, if you are using next-twelve-month (NTM) EBIT, divide EV by the EBIT estimate for those next twelve months—not by last year’s reported EBIT.
Write the result as a multiple, such as “8.5x.” EV and EBIT should use the same currency and compatible units. The ratio is a comparison measure, not a literal number of years required to recover an investment.
What do EV, EBIT, and “forward” mean?
Enterprise value (EV)
Enterprise value represents the value of the company’s operations to all capital providers. One cited valuation report presents a simplified construction as equity value plus debt value and defines EV/EBIT as (equity value + debt value) ÷ EBIT. That is an example rather than a universal, complete EV formula: valuation approaches may include other adjustments. Explain any material adjustments in your calculation instead of assuming every data source constructs EV identically.

EBIT
EBIT means earnings before interest and taxes. OpenStax’s Principles of Finance 2e, section 11.1, notes that “EBIT is also referred to as operating earnings, operating profit, and profit before interest and tax.” Because it is measured before financing costs and taxes, EBIT is used with EV to compare the enterprise with an operating-profit measure.
Forward versus trailing
“Forward” identifies a forecast denominator, but does not specify its period by itself. Grant Thornton Austria describes a one-year forward multiple using analyst EBIT estimates for the next twelve months. A trailing multiple instead uses EBIT from the latest published financial information. Do not label a multiple based on historical EBIT as forward.

Choose and disclose the forecast period
Before calculating, decide whether “forward” means NTM EBIT, EBIT for the next fiscal year, or another defined forecast period. Those periods can produce different denominators. An NTM estimate and a next-fiscal-year estimate are not directly comparable unless the difference is made clear.
Identify where the forecast came from—for example, analyst estimates or another named estimate source—and use an EBIT estimate that matches the selected period. Forecasts can change, so record the valuation date and estimate basis alongside the multiple.

Calculation steps
- Set the valuation date. Use EV as of that date. When comparing companies, use the same date or clearly explain any difference.
- Define EV. Identify the equity value, debt value, and any other material adjustments included in your EV calculation.
- Name the forward horizon. Specify NTM, the next fiscal year, or the other period covered by the forecast.
- Select matching forecast EBIT. Use the estimate for that horizon and disclose its source and whether it is reported or adjusted EBIT.
- Check units and divide. Put EV and EBIT in the same currency and scale, then calculate EV ÷ forecast EBIT and state the result as an “x” multiple.
Worked example format
Use actual inputs from a company filing and a clearly identified forecast source; the following is a fill-in format, not company data:
“At [valuation date], EV was [EV amount]. The selected forward period is [period], and forecast EBIT for that period is [EBIT amount] from [estimate source]. Forward EV/EBIT = [EV amount] ÷ [forecast EBIT amount] = [multiple]x.”

How to compare forward EV/EBIT multiples fairly
Enterprise-value multiples relate the total market value of a company’s capital to a fundamental measure for the enterprise, as CFA Institute describes. EV/EBIT can help compare companies without focusing on how each finances its operations, but that does not make their businesses otherwise equivalent.

A lower multiple alone does not establish that a security is cheap, nor does a higher one prove it is expensive. Differences in growth, business risk, accounting, capital intensity, and forecast quality still matter. There is no universal fair EV/EBIT threshold; any benchmark needs a relevant peer group and date.
