Before you send ETH, estimate the network fee separately from the amount you’re transferring. For an EIP-1559 transaction, multiply the gas the transaction is expected to use by its effective price per gas. Your wallet’s displayed fee is an estimate, not a fixed price: the final charge depends on network conditions when the transaction is included.
Calculate the fee with this formula
Estimated fee (ETH) = estimated gas used × effective fee per gas (gwei) ÷ 1,000,000,000.
One gwei equals 0.000000001 ETH. The effective per-gas price is the block’s base fee plus the priority fee, subject to your transaction’s max-fee cap. For the fee mechanics and units, see Ethereum.org’s gas documentation and the EIP-1559 specification.
Worked example: a basic ETH transfer
Ethereum.org uses 21,000 gas as the example for a standard ETH transfer. With an illustrative base fee of 10 gwei and a 2 gwei priority fee, the arithmetic is:

21,000 × (10 + 2) = 252,000 gwei = 0.000252 ETH.
This is an illustration, not a live quote. If you send 1 ETH at those example rates, your total debit would be 1.000252 ETH; the recipient would receive 1 ETH. In the example, 0.00021 ETH is the burned base-fee portion and 0.000042 ETH is the validator tip.
Understand the numbers in your wallet
Ethereum fees are paid in ETH, while per-gas prices are commonly shown in gwei. The transaction fields set limits; they do not all describe the amount you will ultimately pay. Ethereum’s transaction documentation explains the transaction parameters.

| Gas used | The computation the transaction actually consumes. A plain ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas in Ethereum’s example; contract interactions can require more. |
| Base fee | A per-gas charge set by the protocol that changes with recent block demand. It is burned. |
| Priority fee | An additional per-gas tip intended to encourage validators to include the transaction sooner. The appropriate amount depends on network conditions and urgency. |
| Max fee per gas | The maximum per-gas price you authorize, including base fee and tip. The effective price can be lower than this cap. |
| Gas limit | The maximum gas the transaction is allowed to consume. It is not the predicted gas use or necessarily the final bill. |
The sender pays for gas consumed at the effective price when the transaction is included. If the max fee leaves less room above the base fee, the effective tip may be lower than the priority fee you specified. Unused gas is refunded. A failed transaction can still incur a fee; if execution runs out of gas, it can consume the supplied gas.

- Open the send flow in your wallet. Enter the ETH amount and recipient, then review the fee estimate and transaction details before authorizing. Most wallets suggest a fee based on conditions at the time.
- Check what kind of transaction you are making. Do not assume a contract interaction costs the same as a plain transfer; its gas use can be higher.
- Compare urgency with cost. A higher priority fee may improve inclusion prospects, particularly during congestion, but it raises the potential cost. Waiting for quieter conditions may reduce fees.
- Check the max fee against the current base fee. If your max fee is below the base fee when a block is considered, the transaction is ineligible for that block.
- Verify the recipient and network, then check your balance. Confirm that both sides are using the intended network and that you have enough ETH for the transfer amount plus its fee. Ethereum’s wallet guide describes the suggested-fee workflow and confirmation checks.
Fee estimates are time-sensitive: the base fee and inclusion conditions change with network use. If the cost or timing does not work for you, you can wait for lower demand. Ethereum layer 2 networks can process transactions at lower fees, but a layer 2 transfer is on a different network and is appropriate only if it meets your needs and the recipient can use that network.
