Before selling a crypto put, calculate two separate numbers: the collateral the venue will lock when you open the position, and the account equity you would have left after a severe price, volatility and collateral shock. The strike alone cannot answer either question. Contract multiplier, settlement asset, option mark, margin mode, risk tier, open orders and the exchange’s maintenance-margin formula all matter.
A short put has limited upside (the premium) and potentially very large downside as the underlying approaches zero. Liquidation is driven by the venue’s mark price and maintenance-margin engine—not necessarily the last traded price. Use the exchange’s live calculator or risk engine immediately before submitting an order, then treat your own stress test as a safety buffer rather than a guaranteed liquidation forecast.
What collateral and liquidation risk mean for a short crypto put
When you sell a put, you receive a premium but take on the obligation to buy or cash-settle the underlying at the strike if the contract finishes in the money. A fully cash-secured position would reserve enough cash to meet that obligation. Derivatives venues usually allow less than full cash security by calculating initial and maintenance margin from their own risk model.
Recommended Free Tools
- Initial margin is the amount required to open and maintain the position at entry. The venue may also reserve margin for open orders.
- Maintenance margin is the minimum equity the venue requires as the position and collateral are repriced.
- Available margin or buffer is the equity remaining after current and reserved margin. A small buffer means a modest adverse move can trigger forced reduction.
- Liquidation is an automatic close, partial close or other risk-reducing action when the account no longer satisfies the venue’s maintenance test.
The premium is not automatically equivalent to usable collateral. The venue may value the short option at its mark price, apply collateral haircuts, reserve liquidation fees, and revalue crypto collateral as the underlying falls.

Collect the contract and account inputs first
Write down the following values from the exact product page and margin screen. Two puts with the same strike can require very different collateral on different venues or in different margin modes.
| Input | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|
| Underlying index | The mark and liquidation engine normally use an index or composite price rather than one trade on one order book. |
| Strike (K) and expiry | Distance from the strike and time remaining determine option value, risk and margin. |
| Contract unit or multiplier (Q) | One contract may represent a fraction of a coin, one coin or a cash amount. Notional cannot be inferred from the strike alone. |
| Settlement currency | Cash-settled and coin-settled contracts expose collateral and PnL to different price movements. |
| Option mark price | Unrealized PnL and some margin formulas use the venue’s mark, not your limit price or the last trade. |
| Premium credit (p) | It is realized or unrealized according to venue rules and may be offset by fees, haircuts or reserved margin. |
| Margin mode | Isolated margin limits the position’s collateral pool; cross margin can draw on more of the account. |
| Account equity and margin balance | Liquidation depends on the whole eligible collateral balance, unrealized PnL and deductions—not just the position’s opening credit. |
| Open orders and risk tier | Unfilled orders can consume margin, while larger positions may move to a higher margin tier. |
Step 1: Calculate the position’s notional
For a cash-settled contract, start with:
notional = contract unit (Q) × number of contracts
If you want strike-based obligation rather than current option value, calculate:
strike notional = Q × number of contracts × strike (K)
For a coin-settled contract, record both the coin amount and its dollar value:
coin amount = Q × number of contractsUSD value at index S = coin amount × S

Do not mix these two measures. A coin-settled short put can lose value in the coin while the coin itself is falling, so the collateral’s dollar value and the option liability can worsen together. A cash-settled contract may avoid that particular collateral effect but still has exchange-specific margin and settlement rules.

There is no universal crypto-options collateral formula. Use the documented formula for the venue, product, settlement asset and risk tier, then verify the result in the order ticket.
Binance short-option example
Binance’s published short-option maintenance-margin example is:
Maintenance Margin = { max [Price Index × 5%, Price Index × 7.5% + OTM Amount] × Contract Unit + Mark Price + liquidation fee rate of 0.0019 × Price Index × Contract Unit } × abs(Position Size)
The 0.0019 liquidation-fee rate is the rate shown in Binance’s 2025 margin and risk-management PDF. The expression is Binance-specific; do not copy it to another exchange. Use Binance’s own definition of “OTM Amount,” contract unit, mark price and position size, including the sign and unit conventions in its calculator.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a short put, check how the venue defines the option’s out-of-the-money amount at the current index. Do not replace that field with an intuitive intrinsic-value calculation unless the venue explicitly says to do so. A formula that looks similar can produce a different result when the contract is coin-settled, when the option mark is quoted in coin, or when the position crosses a risk tier.

Deribit-style risk engine
Deribit’s public overview says maintenance margin starts with 1% or 2% and increases with coin and position size. Its portfolio-margin documentation describes a risk engine that applies multiple futures-and-options shocks and uses the worst-performing scenario. That means a hedged book can require less margin than isolated positions, but the result depends on the scenarios, correlations and positions that the engine recognizes. It is not a promise that a hedge will prevent liquidation in every market gap.
Step 3: Estimate initial margin, reserved margin and usable buffer
At entry, add every amount the venue reserves:
- Enter the exact number of contracts, strike, expiry and order price in the venue’s order ticket.
- Record the displayed initial-margin requirement.
- Add margin reserved for open orders, including orders in other instruments if the account is cross-margined.
- Subtract trading fees, settlement charges and any fee reserve shown by the venue.
- Compare the resulting requirement with account equity or margin balance that is actually eligible for this product.
- Keep a separate cash or collateral buffer; do not treat the displayed premium credit as money that can safely absorb every adverse move.
For cross margin, the relevant buffer can be the whole account, which increases capacity but also exposes unrelated positions and collateral. For isolated margin, the position generally cannot draw on the rest of the account, so the liquidation distance may be shorter even when the total account has ample equity.
Step 4: Revalue the short put under adverse scenarios
Build a stress grid rather than relying on a single liquidation-price display. For each stressed underlying price Sᵢ, estimate the option mark, collateral value and fees:
equityᵢ = starting collateral + realized PnL + option PnLᵢ + collateral PnLᵢ − fees
Then calculate or obtain the venue’s maintenance requirement MMᵢ at that same scenario. Compare the two values using the venue’s trigger metric. A useful generic table has the following columns:
| Scenario | Underlying index | Option mark estimate | Collateral value | Estimated equity | Maintenance margin | Equity minus maintenance margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current | S | V | C | Starting balance plus current PnL | MM | Buffer at entry |
| Moderate decline | S₁ below S | V₁ | C₁ | Repriced equity | MM₁ | Reduced buffer |
| Below strike | S₂ below K | V₂ | C₂ | Repriced equity | MM₂ | Potentially small or negative |
| Severe gap | S₃ far below K | V₃ | C₃ | Gap-stressed equity | MM₃ | Liquidation risk or deficit |
Stress at least four drivers:
- Underlying decline: increase the put’s value as the index falls toward and below the strike.
- Implied-volatility increase: a volatility spike can raise the mark even before the underlying reaches the strike.
- Time remaining: a long-dated option can retain substantial time value during a decline; a near-expiry option can change rapidly around the strike.
- Spread widening and liquidity: the executable price may be worse than a midpoint, and the mark or liquidation fill can move during a gap.
- Collateral decline: revalue coin collateral at the same stressed price. Do not hold collateral constant when it is the asset that is falling.
- Fees and liquidation charges: deduct opening, closing, settlement and liquidation fees according to the venue’s schedule.
The liquidation boundary is the price at which your stressed equity divided by the venue’s maintenance requirement reaches its trigger. Because option marks, collateral haircuts and margin tiers can change discontinuously, solve for a range rather than reporting a false-precision single price.

How to interpret a displayed liquidation price
Use the displayed estimate as a live snapshot, not a guarantee. Binance states that liquidation is triggered when the mark price reaches the liquidation price and describes the condition as:
“A liquidation is triggered when: Collateral = Initial Collateral + Realized PnL + Unrealized PnL < Maintenance Margin.”
The mark price can differ from the last trade. During a fast move, the index, mark, option quote, collateral value and maintenance requirement can all update before you can add funds or cancel an order. Illiquid options may have especially wide spreads, making a displayed estimate unstable.
Binance warning and liquidation levels
Binance’s current short-selling FAQ (accessed in 2026) describes a maintenance-margin-to-adjusted-equity ratio of 0.80 as a warning level and 0.95 as a level that can trigger forced liquidation. These are venue-specific thresholds. Confirm the exact ratio definition, account mode and product rules on the live account screen because “adjusted equity” and maintenance margin may include deductions that are not visible in a simple position calculation.
A warning is not a guaranteed grace period. If the ratio is approaching the forced-liquidation level, reduce the position, add eligible collateral or cancel margin-consuming orders before the mark reaches the trigger.

Deribit says margin is calculated in real time 24/7/365 and that positions must remain covered continuously. It also states that there is no preceding “margin call” asking users to deposit more margin to avoid liquidation. Its process can be incremental: the engine may close part of a position, recalculate margin, and continue until maintenance margin is below the available margin balance.

Partial liquidation can reduce the position without eliminating all risk. After any forced reduction, recalculate the remaining option’s notional, mark, maintenance requirement, fees and collateral value. Do not assume that one partial close restores a comfortable buffer or that the venue will wait for manual confirmation.

Isolated, cross and portfolio margin: choosing the right risk lens
Isolated margin
Isolated margin assigns a defined collateral pool to the position. It limits the amount of the account exposed to that trade, but liquidation can occur sooner because outside equity is unavailable. Calculate the buffer using only the isolated balance that the venue recognizes.
Cross margin
Cross margin can use eligible balances and PnL from several positions. It may lengthen the liquidation distance for one put, but a loss in that put can consume collateral protecting unrelated trades. Include every cross-margined position, open order and collateral haircut in the account-level stress test.
Portfolio margin
Portfolio margin evaluates a book under specified shocks. A futures hedge or another option can lower the worst-case scenario and therefore the requirement, but only if the risk engine recognizes the hedge, its expiry and its settlement asset. A hedge can also fail through basis risk, liquidity gaps, differing expiries or a move outside the modeled shocks.
A symbolic worked framework
Assume one short put with contract unit Q, strike K, premium credit p and current index S. First calculate Q × K for strike notional. For every selected price Sᵢ below and above K:
- Obtain or estimate the option mark
Vᵢusing the venue’s mark convention and a volatility assumption. - Revalue collateral as
Cᵢ, including the coin price if collateral is crypto-denominated. - Calculate
equityᵢ = starting collateral + realized PnL + option PnLᵢ + collateral PnLᵢ − fees. - Apply the venue’s maintenance-margin function to obtain
MMᵢ, including risk tier, open orders and liquidation-fee reserve. - Locate the interval where the equity-to-maintenance ratio crosses the venue’s warning or liquidation threshold.
- Use the exchange calculator or risk engine to validate the interval before placing the order.
This framework deliberately does not produce a live liquidation quote. Option marks, volatility, collateral haircuts and venue formulas must come from the current product and account.
Common calculation mistakes and fixes
- Using the strike as collateral: multiply the actual contract unit by the number of contracts and follow the venue’s margin function.
- Using last price instead of mark: use the documented index and mark-price fields that drive liquidation.
- Counting premium as free cash: include option mark, fees, haircuts and reserved margin before calling any credit usable.
- Ignoring open orders: cancel or include all margin-consuming orders in the calculation.
- Holding crypto collateral constant: revalue it at each stressed underlying price.
- Assuming one formula works everywhere: record settlement asset, multiplier, risk tier and margin mode for the exact venue.
- Reporting one precise liquidation price: show a range and assumptions because marks and maintenance tiers can jump.
- Expecting a manual margin call: venues can warn or liquidate automatically, and some provide no grace period.
- Ignoring gap and liquidity risk: test a price gap, volatility jump and wider spread, not only a smooth one-percent move.
Pre-trade checklist
- Confirm the underlying index, strike, expiry, contract unit, multiplier and settlement currency.
- Record the option mark, index price, implied-volatility input and account equity.
- Select isolated, cross or portfolio margin and note which balances are eligible.
- Calculate contract and strike notional; for coin settlement, record coin quantity and USD value.
- Apply the venue’s initial- and maintenance-margin formulas, risk tier and liquidation-fee reserve.
- Include open-order margin, fees, collateral haircuts and all cross-margined positions.
- Stress a decline below the strike, higher volatility, less time, wider spreads and falling crypto collateral.
- Compare stressed equity with maintenance margin and identify the warning and forced-liquidation thresholds.
- Keep a buffer large enough for a gap; do not size the trade to the displayed maximum.
- After execution, monitor mark price, maintenance ratio and available margin continuously, especially near expiry or during fast markets.
What the calculation can—and cannot—tell you
A careful calculation tells you how much collateral the venue is likely to reserve under stated assumptions, how the position behaves as the underlying and volatility move, and where your modeled buffer becomes thin. It cannot guarantee an execution price, prevent a gap, or predict a mark-price change outside the venue’s risk model. Treat liquidation as an automatic risk-control process with fees and possible partial fills, not as a price at which you will necessarily have time to respond.
