To buy Zcash (ZEC), use an exchange that serves your location, then decide whether to leave the coins there or withdraw them to a wallet you control. If shielded transactions matter to you, check before buying that both the exchange and receiving wallet support withdrawals to and use of shielded addresses. A ZEC purchase through an exchange is not automatically private: account records and the transaction type you use affect what is visible.
What to check before buying ZEC
Zcash supports transparent and shielded transactions, but services and wallets differ in the address types and features they support. Before choosing an exchange or wallet, check these points:
- Location: Confirm that the exchange accepts customers in your country or region. An exchange appearing in Zcash’s ecosystem directory does not mean it is available everywhere.
- Withdrawal support: If you want to use shielded addresses, confirm that the exchange permits withdrawals to the address type your wallet uses. Trading ZEC does not establish that shielded withdrawals are supported.
- Costs and account requirements: Compare payment methods, fees, identity requirements and custody arrangements in the provider’s current documentation. The official guidance does not establish current fees or a universally best exchange.
- Wallet fit: Check whether the wallet supports the ZEC address pools and recovery process you need, and whether it behaves as you expect by default.
Zcash’s exchange guidance recommends choosing an exchange that supports shielded withdrawals. Treat that as a feature to verify with the provider, not an assumption based on its ZEC listing.
How to buy and move ZEC
- Choose an exchange available where you live. Zcash’s ecosystem directory lists services including Gemini, Kraken and Coinbase, but availability and features vary by location and provider.
- Review the purchase and withdrawal details. Check the exchange’s current fees, funding methods, account requirements, custody terms and supported ZEC withdrawal address types.
- Set up a wallet if you plan to self-custody. Get it through the project’s official distribution channel. Complete its recovery setup and securely back up the recovery material before transferring a meaningful balance.
- Confirm the receiving address type. Check the address and supported features in both the exchange and wallet. Do not infer shielded support from the fact that both handle ZEC.
- Make a small test withdrawal. Confirm that it arrives at the intended wallet before sending a larger amount. This is a prudent operational check; Zcash’s cited guidance does not prescribe a test amount.
Buying ZEC on an exchange and making an on-chain shielded transaction are different steps. Your exchange account and purchase may be associated with account records or identity checks even if you later withdraw to a shielded address.

Transparent and shielded Zcash transactions
Transparent activity makes transaction information public. Shielded transactions use cryptographic proofs, including zk-SNARKs, to verify transaction properties while protecting specified transaction data. Zcash’s usage guide describes the distinction and advises users seeking confidentiality to use a wallet or exchange that is shielded by default.
Shielding a transaction does not make every part of buying or holding ZEC anonymous. It does not erase exchange records or protect a compromised device, exposed recovery material or information disclosed through your own actions. The protocol’s privacy properties apply to specified on-chain data, not automatically to every service or activity around a transaction.

Choosing a ZEC wallet
Zcash’s wallet guidance covers mobile, desktop and hardware options and presents a mobile wallet as an accessible starting point for many users. Choose based on the features you need, not just the wallet category.
- Mobile or desktop software: Convenient for routine access. Confirm the wallet’s supported ZEC address pools, default transaction behavior and recovery process.
- Hardware wallet: A separate device may suit people who want a hardware-based custody option. The official Zodl page, which describes the self-custodial wallet formerly known as Zashi, lists Keystone integration. That does not establish that every Keystone model supports every shielded feature or wallet operation.
If considering a Keystone hardware wallet, verify the exact model, device firmware, wallet app and shielded-address compatibility before buying or transferring funds. Features such as swaps or payment integrations listed by a wallet provider may also vary by location; check the provider’s current terms.

Protect your wallet and recovery material
A wallet’s private keys authorize transfers. If you lose access to a private key and have no usable backup, you may permanently lose access to the associated ZEC. The SEC-filed issuer description states this risk explicitly.
- Keep recovery material private and store it somewhere protected from loss, theft and unauthorized access.
- Use authentic wallet software and devices; follow the project’s official distribution links rather than relying on search results or unsolicited messages.
- Before sending funds, confirm the destination address and the wallet’s supported features.
- Do not assume that a security warning for one implementation applies to every wallet. For example, the zcashd documentation warns about limitations involving wallet encryption and side-channel attacks in that implementation, and recommends full-disk or home-directory encryption for wallet data at rest. Those warnings should not be generalized to all current wallet apps.
What to verify as services change
Exchange availability, withdrawal modes, wallet features and hardware compatibility can change. Confirm the current details directly with the exchange and wallet provider before purchasing or transferring ZEC. The cited official materials do not establish current exchange fees, provider-specific identity requirements or model-by-model hardware support.
