As of 19 October 2026, the boxed edition of Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is announced for Japan on 17 December 2026. It will be sold as two separate cartridges: a Nintendo Switch version reported at ¥4,400 and a Nintendo Switch 2 version reported at ¥5,610. No Western physical release, named overseas retailer, confirmed preorder allocation, or destination-specific shipping and tax information has been established, so buyers outside Japan should approach it as an import.
If you need to play immediately, the game is already sold digitally worldwide for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Steam. The digital and physical routes solve different problems: the import gives you the announced Japanese package and collectibles, while digital avoids international shipping and customs.
What is confirmed about the physical release
Gematsu reports a Japanese boxed release date of 17 December 2026. The announcement covers two products rather than one universal cartridge:

Those are reported Japanese prices, not delivered prices for another country. The evidence available for this date does not identify a Western physical edition, an overseas store with confirmed stock, or a preorder listing that ships to a particular destination. A retailer may publish an import listing later, but a listing should not be treated as confirmed until it states the platform, Japanese release date and shipping terms.

Which cartridge should you order?
Buy the Switch cartridge for a Switch or Switch Lite
Select the ¥4,400 product when the console you will use is an original Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite. Check the product title and the hardware icon carefully: Touhou titles can have similarly worded listings, and an import page may mix platform filters.
Buy the Switch 2 cartridge for a Nintendo Switch 2
Select the ¥5,610 product when you own Nintendo Switch 2. Do not choose it merely because it is the newer or more expensive package. The physical releases are separate products, so the console label is the first compatibility check.
Do not assume save or downloadable-content transfer
Nintendo’s US store describes the Switch and Switch 2 digital products as separate versions and warns that save data and downloadable content are not compatible between them. That warning is enough reason to avoid assuming that a save, bonus or code associated with one physical product will transfer to the other. No source here establishes cross-cartridge save or DLC support; buy the version that matches the hardware on which you intend to play.
What the Japanese package contains
Gematsu’s description lists the following contents for each physical release:

- The main game cartridge.
- A download code for the Classic version.
- A download code for a soundtrack player.
- Reversible cover art styled after the 2002 release.
- Character stickers and bullet-hell stickers.
- A booklet titled Marisa’s Guide to Resolving Incidents.
The two download codes are part of the value proposition, but they are not additional cartridges. Before paying, ask the seller which Nintendo account regions can redeem them. The available information does not establish whether every overseas account can use either code.
How to find an overseas preorder
Use the following process when an import retailer opens orders. It is designed to prevent the most expensive mistakes: buying the wrong platform, paying for a digital code, or discovering that the seller will not ship to your country.
- Choose the hardware first. Decide between Nintendo Switch/Switch Lite and Nintendo Switch 2. Record the exact platform name before searching.
- Search the complete title. Use “Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil” together with the platform name and “Japan import.” Adding “physical” helps filter out digital-store pages.
- Confirm the date and edition. The listing should identify the Japanese physical edition scheduled for 17 December 2026. Check that it is not a digital download code, a soundtrack-only product, or another Touhou game.
- Inspect the hardware label. Look for “Nintendo Switch” or “Nintendo Switch 2” in the product title, specifications and photographs. A generic “Switch” heading is not enough when the seller stocks both cartridges.
- Verify seller and allocation. Check the seller’s trading history, whether the order is a guaranteed allocation or an interest list, the expected dispatch date, and the cancellation policy. A preorder page without a stated allocation can be changed or cancelled.
- Check destination service before checkout. Confirm that the seller ships to your country, which carrier and service level are used, and whether tracking is included. A Japanese domestic listing is not automatically an international offer.
- Calculate the delivered total. Add the yen item price, international postage, import VAT or sales tax, customs duty where applicable, and any carrier brokerage fee. Ask whether tax is collected at checkout or charged on delivery.
- Check code redemption. Ask the retailer or publisher whether the Classic and soundtrack-player codes are restricted to a Japanese Nintendo account. Treat an answer that only says “the cartridge is playable overseas” as incomplete; cartridge access and code redemption are separate questions.
- Save the listing details. Keep a copy of the product page, platform designation, promised contents, price, shipping terms and cancellation rules. Those details are useful if the seller later substitutes a digital product or the wrong cartridge.
How much should an import budget allow?
The only reported physical prices are the Japanese prices below. They are the starting point, not the amount an overseas buyer will necessarily pay.

Because shipping and tax differ by destination and seller, there is no reliable delivered-price figure to publish. A low item price can become expensive after expedited shipping and import handling; a slower tracked service may cost less but arrive later. Compare the final checkout total, not just the yen price.

Digital versions available now
If a cartridge is optional, digital distribution is the immediate alternative. The official Shanghai Alice Reprise site links purchase pages for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Steam. It lists a 10 September 2026 release date, standard and deluxe editions, and 12 supported languages: Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, French, German, Spanish (Spain), Spanish (Latin America), Russian, Brazilian Portuguese and Italian.

The one-day difference between 9 and 10 September reflects the dates shown by different storefronts and regions; it does not indicate a separate game. Steam showed a base-bundle price of $17.99 when crawled, but store prices and regional availability can change.
New Classic and Classic are different experiences

The Classic download code therefore should not be interpreted as an English-language remake. If English text is essential, confirm how the New Classic mode is localized on the specific cartridge you plan to import, and remember that the evidence for the 12-language list comes from the digital product pages.

Can an overseas buyer play the Japanese cartridge in English?
The official site and digital storefronts list English among 12 supported languages for the game. However, the available release information does not explicitly state that every physical Japanese cartridge carries the same language selection, nor does it describe the code-region policy for the included downloads. Ask the retailer for a direct answer to both questions:

- Does the physical New Classic cartridge include English text, and where is the language selected?
- Can the Classic-version and soundtrack-player codes be redeemed by an account registered outside Japan?
The guaranteed language qualification is that Classic-mode text is Japanese. If a seller cannot confirm New Classic language support or code redemption, treat the physical package as an import with uncertain extras and use the digital edition whose store page explicitly lists your language.

The listing says “Switch” but does not identify the generation
Do not order until the seller confirms whether the cartridge is for Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. Request a photograph of the package spine or platform logo if the title is ambiguous.
The product is a digital code
Look for wording such as “download,” “digital,” or “code only.” The physical edition should describe a cartridge and the printed package contents. A digital code cannot provide the reversible cover, stickers or booklet.
The store accepts a preorder but gives no allocation or dispatch terms
Ask whether the order is guaranteed, when payment is captured, and what happens if the Japanese allocation is reduced. If the answers are unclear, keep the order cancellable and maintain a digital fallback.

Shipping is available, but import charges are not explained
Ask whether VAT or sales tax is collected at checkout and whether the carrier may charge a brokerage fee on delivery. Budget for the possibility that the amount shown by the retailer excludes destination charges.
A code fails to redeem
Do not assume the cartridge is defective. Verify the Nintendo account’s country setting and ask the seller or publisher whether the code is Japan-only. Keep the receipt and the original code card; they are needed for a support request.
The wrong version arrives
Photograph the package and platform label before opening it. Compare the delivered item with the saved listing, then use the seller’s stated return or replacement process. Opening a code can affect return eligibility, so inspect the platform first.

Which buying route fits your situation?
You collect physical Touhou releases
Wait for a retailer that clearly identifies the Japanese 17 December 2026 edition, guarantees allocation and lists all package contents. Choose the cartridge matching your console, and treat the download codes as bonuses whose region policy must be confirmed.
You want to play on release day without import risk
Use the digital version on your preferred platform. It is already listed worldwide, avoids international dispatch and customs, and provides the clearest published language information.
You own both Switch generations
Decide where your main save will live before ordering. Nintendo’s store warning about separate products and incompatible save data and downloadable content means purchasing one version should not be assumed to grant the other.
You specifically want the original 2002 experience
Check that the package includes the Classic download code, then remember that Classic-mode text is Japanese. If language accessibility matters more than the physical extras, compare that limitation with the digital New Classic release.
