To buy Microsoft shares online, open a regulated brokerage account that accepts U.S. exchange-listed orders, fund it, search for the Nasdaq ticker MSFT, choose whole or fractional shares, select an order type, review the costs and confirmation, and submit. A normal brokerage purchase is different from Microsoft’s direct-purchase option administered by Computershare: a broker generally gives you more control over order timing, while a direct plan has its own fees and dealing rules.
What you are buying
Microsoft common shares trade on The Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol MSFT. Microsoft’s Investor Relations FAQ states: “Microsoft common shares are traded on The Nasdaq Stock Market. The ticker symbol is MSFT.” Search for the ticker rather than relying only on a company-name search, because several securities can have similar names.
Buying a share gives you an equity interest in Microsoft. The market price changes continuously while the market is open, and your account value can rise or fall. A purchase is not a guaranteed return, and this guide does not determine whether Microsoft is suitable for your objectives, tax situation or risk tolerance.

Online brokerage account
A regulated online broker is the usual route. FINRA describes a brokerage account as an account in which a FINRA-registered professional or brokerage firm accepts and carries out securities orders. Before opening one, read the firm’s Form CRS, fee schedule, account agreement and disciplinary-history information. Confirm that the firm is authorised to provide access to U.S. exchange-listed stocks to customers in your jurisdiction.

Compare providers on the features that affect an MSFT order, not just an advertised commission:
- Regulatory status, Form CRS and the protections that apply to your country and account type.
- Commissions, bid-ask spreads, foreign-exchange charges, account-maintenance or inactivity fees, transfer and wire charges, and margin interest.
- Whether the application opens a cash account or defaults to margin.
- Fractional-share eligibility, minimum order size, supported order types, trading hours and execution method.
- Funding and withdrawal methods, settlement handling and minimum deposits.
- Tax-document support, customer service and the process for transferring shares to another broker.
Microsoft’s direct-purchase option
Microsoft identifies Computershare as its transfer agent and says that Computershare administers a direct stock purchase plan and a dividend reinvestment plan. This can be an alternative to a traditional broker, but it does not work like a real-time brokerage order. Investor.gov cautions that direct stock plans usually may not let you buy or sell at a specific market price or at a specific time, and advises investors to check the plan’s fees. Read the plan documents before sending money, including purchase timing, sale instructions, recurring-investment rules, minimums and transfer procedures.

Step-by-step: buy MSFT through a brokerage
1. Select and verify the broker
Use the broker’s regulatory disclosures to confirm that it can handle U.S. listed-equity orders. Read the Form CRS, account agreement, fee schedule and disciplinary information before applying. Make sure the service is available to residents of your country and that its stated protections, tax reporting and currency-conversion rules apply to you.

2. Open the account
The application normally asks for identity and tax information, employment details, financial circumstances, investing experience, time horizon, liquidity needs and risk tolerance. Supply accurate information; it is used for account approval, suitability processes and required reporting.
Choose the account type deliberately:

Some applications present margin as a default. Check the selected account type before accepting the agreement, and do not enable borrowing simply to obtain access to ordinary share purchases.

3. Link a bank account and fund it
Connect a bank account using the broker’s secure funding workflow, then deposit enough for the intended purchase and any applicable fees. Deposit minimums, transfer methods, availability of incoming funds and withdrawal timing differ by provider, so use the broker’s current terms rather than assuming a universal schedule. If your bank account and trading account use different currencies, check the broker’s foreign-exchange spread or conversion charge.
4. Find Microsoft by ticker
Sign in to the broker’s website or app, open the trade or order ticket, and enter MSFT. Confirm that the result is Microsoft common stock listed on Nasdaq, not a derivative, fund, option, leveraged product or similarly named instrument. Check the quote currency and whether the displayed price is delayed.
5. Decide between whole and fractional shares
Enter either a number of shares or a dollar amount if the broker supports fractional orders. Whole shares are straightforward to transfer and usually carry the standard voting and dividend treatment. Fractional shares let a smaller amount of money participate in MSFT, but the broker controls the details.
The SEC warns that firms differ in eligible securities, order types, execution, fees, liquidity, voting, dividends and transferability for fractional interests. FINRA notes that fractional trading is often limited to regular market hours, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time. A broker may aggregate your instruction with other customers’ orders, restrict limit or stop orders, prohibit after-hours execution, apply a different execution price, limit voting rights or require a fraction to be sold when you transfer the account.
Before using a dollar-based order, read the broker’s fractional-share disclosure. Confirm how dividends are credited, whether a tiny residual balance can be transferred, and what happens if you close the account.

6. Select an order type
The available menu is broker-specific. The two common choices are:

- Limit order: sets the highest price you will pay for a buy order. It executes only at that limit or better, so it may remain unfilled. The broker may offer additional time-in-force choices, such as an instruction that expires at the end of the session; read the label shown on the ticket.
Do not assume that every broker supports the same order types for fractional shares or outside regular hours. If a field is unclear, open the broker’s order-help explanation before submitting.
7. Review and submit
Check the estimated total, share quantity or dollar amount, order type, limit price if applicable, time-in-force, currency conversion and displayed fees. Submit only after confirming that the ticket identifies MSFT common stock and the intended account.
After submission, open the order-status screen. A market order can fill in pieces or at prices that differ from the estimate; a limit order can remain pending or expire. Save the confirmation showing the executed quantity, execution price, time, order instructions and charges. If the order is rejected, read the stated reason rather than immediately resubmitting: insufficient available funds, an unsupported fractional instruction, a trading-hours restriction or an account permission can each require a different fix.
8. Keep records after the trade
Retain the trade confirmation, monthly statement and year-end tax documents. They establish your purchase date, cost basis, quantities and fees. Review the account’s dividend setting: dividends, if declared, may be paid as cash or reinvested. For fractional holdings, the broker determines whether reinvestment creates additional fractions and how any residual cash is handled.

Fees you can encounter
“Commission-free” does not mean every cost is zero. The SEC lists commissions, markups or markdowns, account-maintenance fees, inactivity fees, account-closing fees, margin interest, and wire or transfer fees as possible charges. A broker can also embed a cost in the spread or currency conversion. Read the current fee schedule for your residence, account type and order method.

Dividends, voting and fractional-share limitations
Microsoft’s FAQ reports a quarterly dividend of $0.91 per share on a page current in 2026. Dividend declarations and amounts can change; check Microsoft’s latest announcement before relying on that figure. Your broker may pay a declared dividend in cash or reinvest it according to your account setting. The amount for a fractional position is generally based on the fraction held, but the broker’s disclosure controls the treatment of rounding and residual amounts.
Fractional ownership can also differ from whole-share ownership for voting, corporate actions, lending, transfer and liquidity. Some firms aggregate fractional interests and vote only under their stated policy. If those rights matter to you, read the broker’s fractional-share agreement and consider whether whole shares better meet your needs.
Taxes and records
Your tax result depends on your residence, account type, holding period, currency and applicable treaty or withholding rules. The broker may provide transaction reports and year-end forms, but those documents do not replace local tax advice. Keep confirmations and statements even when the platform supplies a consolidated report, particularly if you later transfer the shares or change brokers. Ask a qualified tax professional about dividend withholding, capital gains, cost-basis adjustments and reporting obligations in your jurisdiction.
When a direct plan may be preferable
A direct plan can make sense if you want to hold shares through Microsoft’s transfer agent, use a dividend reinvestment feature or make recurring purchases under the plan’s rules. It is less suitable when your priority is choosing an exact market price or immediate execution, because Investor.gov warns that direct stock plans usually do not provide those controls. Compare enrollment, purchase, reinvestment, sale, transfer and account-maintenance fees before choosing it over a broker.

Troubleshooting common problems
The app shows several MSFT products
Open the instrument details and verify “Microsoft common stock,” Nasdaq and the correct currency. Do not submit an order for an option, contract for difference, leveraged product or fund when you intend to own shares.
The fractional order is unavailable
Check whether the broker supports fractional MSFT orders, whether the market is within its permitted hours, and whether that order type is allowed for fractions. If not, enter a whole-share order or use a provider whose disclosures explicitly support the desired fractional instruction.
The order is rejected
Review available cash, account permissions, market hours, minimum order value, limit-price rules and any currency-conversion requirement. A margin account can show purchasing power that is not the same as cash available for a cash purchase; read the rejection message and account balances carefully.

A limit order may not execute because the market has not reached your limit, while a direct-plan purchase follows the plan’s processing schedule. Check the order’s time-in-force and status before cancelling or replacing it, so you do not create an unintended duplicate order.
You want to move the shares later
Ask both brokers whether whole and fractional MSFT positions are transferable. Fractional balances may be liquidated instead of transferred, and the resulting sale can create a taxable transaction. Obtain the receiving broker’s transfer instructions before initiating the move.
A practical pre-submission checklist
- Broker is regulated for your jurisdiction and provides a readable Form CRS and fee schedule.
- Account type is intentionally set to cash or margin; borrowing is not enabled by accident.
- Bank funding, currency conversion and available cash are sufficient.
- Instrument is Microsoft common stock, ticker MSFT, on Nasdaq.
- Whole-share or fractional-share choice matches the broker’s rules on hours, order types, dividends, voting and transfers.
- Order type, limit price, time-in-force, estimated total and fees are understood.
- Confirmation and later tax documents will be saved.
Bottom line
For most people, the process is: use a regulated broker, deliberately choose a cash or margin account, fund it, search for Nasdaq ticker MSFT, select whole or supported fractional shares, review the order and all costs, then save the confirmation. Use Microsoft’s Computershare plan only after checking its fees and accepting that direct-plan purchases and sales may not occur at a price or time you choose.
