To buy MidCap Financial Investment Corporation (Nasdaq: MFIC), use a brokerage account that supports the shares or contact the company’s transfer agent, American Stock Transfer. MFIC says it does not sell shares directly. Before buying, assess the share price against net asset value (NAV), income against the dividend, and credit and leverage risks together: neither a portfolio yield nor a declared dividend guarantees your return.
What MFIC stock represents
MFIC is the common stock of MidCap Financial Investment Corporation, an externally managed, publicly traded business development company (BDC). A BDC invests in and lends to smaller and middle-market businesses; buying MFIC shares gives you an ownership interest in the company, not a deposit or a direct loan to one borrower. MFIC’s stated objective is current income and, to a lesser extent, capital appreciation. It says it primarily invests in senior secured first-lien loans originated by MidCap Financial for U.S. middle-market companies. Apollo Investment Management, L.P., an Apollo affiliate, is its adviser. MFIC has elected regulated investment company (RIC) tax treatment. These are descriptions of the company’s structure and strategy, not an endorsement or a judgment about its investment merits. MFIC company overview
How to buy MFIC shares
- Use a brokerage account or contact the transfer agent. MFIC says shares are purchased through a broker or American Stock Transfer, which it identifies as its transfer agent. It does not sell shares directly. Check with your provider that it supports Nasdaq-listed MFIC common stock. MFIC shareholder FAQ
- Confirm the security. Search the exact ticker MFIC and check that the result is MidCap Financial Investment Corporation common stock before entering an order.
- Choose an order type with the price risk in mind. A market order prioritizes execution at the best available price, which can differ from the price you last saw. A limit order sets the highest price you will pay, but may not execute. Review your broker’s current order descriptions, fees, and account terms before submitting an order.
- Check dividend instructions after purchase. MFIC’s FAQ says common shareholders are automatically enrolled in its dividend reinvestment plan. It describes notifying American Stock Transfer in writing by the relevant record-date deadline to elect cash dividends. Confirm current forms, deadlines, and instructions with the transfer agent.
What the latest verified results show
The latest verified quarter-end figures in the results available here are for June 30, 2026. MFIC reported them in its August 6, 2026 results release; they are dated company figures, not current share-price data or forecasts. Check for a newer filing or release before relying on them.
| Measure | MFIC-reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| NAV per share | $13.37 as of June 30, 2026 | Estimated net asset value attributable to each share; it is not the exchange price. |
| Net leverage | 1.54x as of June 30, 2026 | A measure of borrowing relative to net assets; leverage can magnify gains and losses. |
| Net investment income (NII) | $0.40 per share for the quarter ended June 30, 2026 | Income after expenses under the company’s reporting measure; compare it with distributions over time. |
| First-lien secured debt | 94% of portfolio fair value as of June 30, 2026 | Describes the portfolio mix, not a guarantee against borrower losses. |
| Weighted-average debt portfolio yield | 9.5% at amortized cost as of June 30, 2026, excluding non-accrual investments | This is a portfolio measure, not the return an MFIC shareholder receives. MFIC cautioned that investor yield may be lower after expenses. |
| Quarterly dividend | $0.31 per share, declared August 5, 2026; payable September 24, 2026, to holders of record September 8, 2026 | The board declared this payment; MFIC said it could not assure continuation of the base dividend at that amount. |
| Quarterly NAV movement | Down 3.2% in the second quarter of 2026 | MFIC attributed the decline to portfolio losses from credit weakness in a limited number of positions, partly offset by repurchases below NAV and NII above the dividend. |

How to interpret MFIC’s income and NAV
Portfolio yield is not your shareholder return
The 9.5% figure is the weighted-average yield on MFIC’s debt portfolio at amortized cost, excluding non-accrual investments, as of June 30, 2026. It is not a promised yield on the stock. Company expenses, changes in portfolio income, financing costs, share-price changes, and distributions all affect an investor’s total return. The exchange price may also be above or below NAV per share.

NII and the dividend answer different questions
NII is a measure of income available to support distributions, but a single quarter’s $0.40 per-share figure does not establish that future earnings will match or exceed a dividend. The $0.31-per-share quarterly payment declared in August 2026 was a board decision for that distribution, not a contractual promise of future payments. Dividend amounts can change as earnings, portfolio performance, and capital-allocation decisions change.
NAV is an estimate, not a guaranteed sale value
NAV is the value of assets minus liabilities, expressed per share. It offers a reference point for comparing the market price with the reported value of the portfolio, but it does not set the price at which shares trade. MFIC’s 10-Q explains that most investments do not have readily available market values and are carried at fair value using a process involving the adviser and, for reviewed investments, independent valuation firms. Estimated values can differ from active-market prices or the amounts ultimately realized. A discount to NAV is therefore not, by itself, evidence that a share is undervalued. Risks to assess before investing
Borrower credit and defaults
MFIC lends to middle-market businesses. If a borrower’s finances deteriorate, it may miss payments, need a restructuring, or default, reducing income or causing a loss on the investment. In the second quarter of 2026, the company reported credit weakness in a limited number of positions and related portfolio losses that contributed to the decline in NAV.
Valuation uncertainty
Because many portfolio investments do not trade on an active market, their reported fair values depend partly on estimates and valuation processes. A later sale, borrower event, or change in market conditions can reveal a value different from the amount previously reported.

Borrowing can increase income when portfolio returns exceed funding costs, but it also magnifies the effect of asset losses and higher financing costs on common shareholders. MFIC reported net leverage of 1.54x on June 30, 2026. Its filing describes interest-rate exposure as arising in part from differences between rates earned on investments and rates paid on borrowings.
Interest-rate sensitivity
MFIC’s June 30, 2026 quarter-end scenario analysis estimated that, with no change in the portfolio or borrowing structure, a 100-basis-point fall in base rates would reduce annual NII by $7.3 million, or $0.089 per share. A 100-basis-point rise was estimated to increase annual NII by $7.4 million, or $0.090 per share. These are issuer scenario estimates under stated assumptions, not predictions of future results.

Dividend changes
The board determines distributions, and the company has not assured that it will continue the $0.31 base dividend declared in August 2026. A lower dividend can reduce the cash income an investor receives and may affect the market price.
Market-price and principal risk
MFIC’s share price can move independently of NAV as investors reassess the company, its borrowers, interest rates, or the broader market. The issuer warns that both share price and principal value fluctuate, so shares may be worth more or less than their original cost.

Tax and BDC structure
MFIC’s BDC and RIC status describe regulatory and tax structures; they do not determine an individual shareholder’s tax bill. Tax outcomes depend on your circumstances and the law in effect when distributions are received or shares are sold. Consult a qualified tax professional for advice specific to you.

Use current filings rather than relying on a dividend or portfolio-yield headline. MFIC’s quarterly release and Form 10-Q provide reported figures and risk disclosures; its annual report adds a longer-period view. If comparing MFIC with another BDC or an income investment, use the same reporting dates and definitions where possible.
- Compare the share price with NAV per share, while accounting for the uncertainty in fair-value estimates.
- Review leverage, debt maturities, and funding terms.
- Check portfolio credit quality, non-accrual investments, and borrower or industry concentration.
- Compare NII with distributions across multiple periods, rather than treating one quarter as a guarantee.
- Read rate-sensitivity disclosures to understand how changes in investment rates and borrowing costs may affect income.
- Review management and incentive fees, which affect the income remaining for shareholders.
