To buy Larsen & Toubro shares, open a demat and trading account with a SEBI-registered broker, complete KYC, link a bank account, add funds, search for Larsen & Toubro Limited, and submit a buy order on BSE or NSE. The company’s NSE symbol is LT and its BSE code is 500510. After the market and settlement process is completed, the shares are credited electronically to your demat account.
You cannot place an exchange order directly as an individual investor. The broker provides the trading interface and routes your order to the exchange, while the depository participant (DP) maintains your electronic shareholding.
What you need before buying L&T shares
Buying an equity share involves three linked accounts and services:

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Bank account: supplies money for the purchase and receives sale proceeds.
- Trading account: the broker account used to place orders. NSE describes it as the bridge between your bank account and demat account.
- Demat account: the electronic account in which the purchased shares are held.
Your broker may provide the trading account and demat account through its own platform or through a depository participant arrangement. Confirm that the broker or DP is registered with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and is a member of the exchange on which you intend to trade. NSE investor guidance states that an investor cannot directly buy or sell shares on a stock exchange; an authorised, SEBI-registered intermediary is required.

Documents normally required for KYC
NSE’s current investor guidance lists these normal account-opening documents:
- PAN card
- A recent photograph
- Identity proof
- Address proof
The broker may request additional bank or verification details, such as a cancelled cheque, bank statement, signature specimen, or in-person or video verification. The exact list and acceptable document formats are set by the intermediary’s current onboarding flow. Enter every KYC field accurately and keep copies of the forms and documents you submit.

Search by the full company name as well as the symbol or code. Check that the result is an equity listing for Larsen & Toubro Limited, not a derivative contract, mutual fund, bond, or another instrument with a similar name. A broker can show separate search results for cash-market shares, futures, and options.
How to choose a broker and demat provider
Fees, features, and order-screen labels change, so compare the provider’s current tariff sheet and account-opening disclosures rather than relying on an old article or screenshot. Use these criteria:

| What to check | Why it matters | What to verify before opening |
|---|---|---|
| SEBI registration and exchange membership | Only an authorised intermediary can route your exchange order. | Registration details and the exchanges supported. |
| Demat and trading-account availability | You need both accounts for a normal delivery purchase. | Whether they are opened together and which depository holds the account. |
| Opening and annual maintenance charges | These can apply even when you make few trades. | Current one-time and recurring charges, taxes included or excluded. |
| Brokerage and statutory charges | The displayed share price is not the entire transaction cost. | Brokerage schedule, exchange charges, securities transaction tax, GST, stamp duty, and other applicable levies. |
| Order types and app usability | A clear order ticket reduces quantity, price, and exchange mistakes. | Availability of delivery orders, limit and market choices, alerts, and order-status history. |
| Customer support | Help may be needed for KYC, failed payments, or demat credits. | Support channels, hours, escalation process, and written complaint route. |
| Security controls | Your account controls both money and securities. | Two-factor authentication, device controls, session alerts, and withdrawal safeguards. |
| Partner or referral offers | Promotions can have conditions or expiry dates. | Verify any current offer directly in the provider’s official terms; no particular partner program is established here. |
Do not select a provider solely because an advertisement quotes a low headline fee. Confirm the complete schedule, including charges for delivery trades and demat services, before authorising the account.
Step-by-step: buy L&T shares online
1. Open and verify the accounts
- Choose a SEBI-registered broker and its associated DP.
- Start the account-opening application for a demat and trading account.
- Submit your PAN, photograph, identity proof, address proof, and any additional documents requested.
- Complete the broker’s identity and bank verification process.
- Read the client agreement, tariff sheet, rights and obligations, and risk disclosure before accepting them.
- Save copies of the completed application and accepted documents.
Your account is ready for trading only after the intermediary confirms activation. An application submission message is not the same as an activated trading account.

Provide the bank account that will fund your purchase. The name and details should match your verified KYC information. Use the broker’s approved transfer method and check the credited balance in the trading account, not merely the balance shown in your bank app. Never send money to an unverified personal account or respond to a payment request received through an unofficial channel.
3. Add sufficient funds
Transfer enough to cover the intended purchase and the charges shown on the order preview. The required amount depends on the live L&T price, quantity, order type, and the broker’s current fees and statutory levies. Those values change and must be checked in the broker’s current order flow. Do not assume that a previous day’s price or an online calculator is current.
4. Find Larsen & Toubro in the order screen
- Sign in through the broker’s official website or application.
- Open the equity or cash-market search.
- Enter LT, 500510, or “Larsen & Toubro Limited.”
- Choose the listing on your preferred exchange: NSE or BSE.
- Confirm the company name and the displayed quote before continuing.
The two exchange listings represent the same company’s equity, but the live quote, available liquidity, and order-book details can differ. Select the exchange deliberately rather than accepting an accidental default.

5. Choose delivery and enter the quantity
For an ordinary investment in shares, select the broker’s delivery or cash-market product. Some platforms call this “delivery,” “CNC,” or use another label; read the platform’s description because labels differ. Enter the number of shares you want to buy. Review the estimated order value, available funds, and all charges before submitting.
6. Select an order type
- Market order: asks the system to execute at the best available prices. The final price is not guaranteed and can change while the order is being filled.
- Limit order: specifies the maximum price you are willing to pay. It will execute only at that price or a better one, and it may remain unfilled if the market does not reach your limit.
- Conditional or stop-based choices: some brokers provide additional order types with specific trigger and validity rules. Read the on-screen explanation before using one.
The available order types, validity choices, and names are broker-specific. Check the exact ticket and exchange instructions on the day you trade.
7. Review and submit
Before tapping Buy, check all of the following:
- Company: Larsen & Toubro Limited
- Exchange: NSE or BSE, as intended
- Symbol or code: LT or 500510
- Product: delivery or the equivalent cash-market product
- Quantity and limit price, if used
- Displayed funds requirement and charges
- Order validity and any disclosed conditions
Submit the order only after these fields are correct. Save the order number or confirmation screen.
8. Monitor execution and settlement
An order can be fully executed, partially executed, rejected, cancelled, or left open. Check the broker’s order book and trade book rather than assuming that a submission was a completed purchase. If a limit order remains open, you can follow the broker’s current procedure to modify or cancel it while cancellation is still permitted.
After the market’s settlement process, the purchased shares are delivered electronically into the demat account. Larsen & Toubro’s investor FAQ states that an investor who purchases shares receives delivery in demat form. The exact settlement date and any holiday adjustment should be confirmed in the broker’s current contract note or settlement information; they are not fixed figures in this guide.

Understanding the money and records after a purchase
Contract note and trade confirmation
Keep the broker’s trade confirmation and contract note. They show the executed quantity, execution price, exchange, order and trade references, and charges. Compare the executed details with the order you intended to place. A contract note is the authoritative record of the trade details supplied by the intermediary, not a screenshot of an indicative quote.
Demat credit
Look in the holdings or portfolio section for the credited L&T shares after settlement. The displayed quantity can differ from the order quantity if an order was only partially executed or if a corporate-action adjustment affects the holding. If the shares do not appear when the stated settlement process is complete, contact the broker and DP with your trade and demat details.
Charges, taxes, and the displayed price
The amount debited can include more than the share price. Brokerage, exchange-related charges, securities transaction tax, GST, stamp duty, and other statutory items may apply according to the transaction and the current rules. Because rates and policies change, use the broker’s current contract note and tariff sheet for the exact calculation. This article does not state a live L&T price, a fixed brokerage amount, a tax amount, or a settlement date.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying old paper L&T certificates
If you hold physical Larsen & Toubro certificates, you do not place a normal online buy order for them. You first need a demat account and a depository participant.
- Open and verify a demat account with a DP.
- Obtain and complete the DP’s Dematerialisation Request Form (DRF).
- Submit the DRF and surrender the original certificates to the DP.
- The DP sends the electronic request through the depository to Larsen & Toubro or its registrar for confirmation.
- After the company or registrar confirms the request, the shares are credited to your demat account.
Ensure that the names and certificate details match the demat account records. Ask the DP how it handles mismatches, lost certificates, signature differences, or certificates held in joint names before submitting originals. Keep acknowledgement receipts and copies of every document.

Security and compliance checklist
- Use only the broker’s official website or application and verify the address before signing in.
- Protect passwords, PINs, and one-time passwords (OTPs). Never disclose them to someone claiming to be support staff.
- Enable two-factor authentication and account alerts where available.
- Read the mandatory client documents, tariff sheet, and risk disclosure before trading.
- Complete every KYC field and retain copies of submitted documents.
- Review the beneficiary, bank, and demat details before authorising a transfer.
- Never sign a blank or partly completed delivery instruction slip. SEBI investor guidance specifically cautions against this practice.
- Check holdings and transaction alerts regularly and report an unauthorised transaction promptly through the broker’s documented complaint channel.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The symbol does not appear
Search the full company name, switch between the broker’s equity and derivatives search, and verify that you selected the correct exchange. Use LT for NSE or 500510 for BSE. If the security is temporarily unavailable in the platform, ask the broker whether there is a technical or trading-status issue rather than choosing a similarly named instrument.
The order is rejected
Read the rejection reason in the order book. Common categories include insufficient available funds, an invalid price or quantity, an incorrect product, a closed market session, or a KYC/account restriction. Correct only the stated issue and submit a new order after confirming the details. Do not repeatedly place orders without checking whether an earlier order actually executed.
The order remains open
A limit order may remain open because the market has not reached your limit or because available liquidity is insufficient. Check whether it is partially filled and review its validity. Cancel or modify it only through the broker’s permitted workflow, then verify the resulting status.

First compare the bank debit, order book, trade book, and contract note. If there is no executed trade, the broker should explain the status of the funds. If there is an executed trade but no demat credit after the stated settlement process, contact the broker and DP with the order number and contract note. Escalate through the intermediary’s formal grievance process if the first response does not resolve the discrepancy.
KYC or bank verification failed
Check that the name, date of birth, address, PAN, and bank details match the submitted records. Upload a clear, valid document in the requested format and complete any additional verification step. Do not create a second account to bypass a failed verification; ask the intermediary how to correct the existing application.
Questions to answer before placing the order
- Am I buying the NSE listing (LT) or the BSE listing (500510)?
- Is this a delivery purchase rather than a leveraged or derivative position?
- Have I checked the live quote, quantity, order type, and total charges?
- Is my trading account active and funded?
- Have I saved the order confirmation and understand how to check execution?
Once these checks are complete, the process is straightforward: the broker routes the order, the exchange matches it when conditions permit, and the depository records the resulting shares electronically after settlement.
