To buy an individual bond, use a brokerage account that supports fixed-income trading, transfer enough settled cash, choose either a new-issue auction or an already issued bond in the secondary market, and review price, yield, maturity, credit, call terms, taxes, liquidity, and transaction compensation before submitting. After execution, check the confirmation for the security identifier, quantity, price, accrued interest, fees, yield, and settlement date.

What you need before placing an order

Individual bonds are purchased through a brokerage account’s fixed-income marketplace rather than the ordinary stock-order screen. The account may be taxable or retirement-based, but the firm must enable bond trading and your account must have enough settled cash for the principal, accrued interest, and any disclosed charges. Minimums, available securities, settlement procedures, and order-entry fields differ by firm.

  • Eligible account: A taxable or retirement brokerage account with fixed-income trading enabled.
  • Cash: Settled funds covering the quoted principal, accrued interest on a secondary-market purchase, and any commission or other fee shown by the broker.
  • Identification information: For a secondary-market search, have the issuer, CUSIP when known, maturity range, coupon range, credit information, and call preference.
  • Risk decision: Decide whether you can hold the bond to maturity or call date. Selling earlier exposes you to market price and liquidity risk.

TreasuryDirect states that individuals can buy Treasury marketable securities through a bank, broker, or dealer. A brokerage account is therefore a normal route for Treasury bills, notes, bonds, TIPS, and floating-rate notes (FRNs), as well as corporate, municipal, agency, and other bonds that the firm makes available.

New issue or secondary market?

Your first choice is whether to buy a bond when it is issued or to purchase one that already trades. The two routes produce different pricing, timing, and information.

Feature New issue or Treasury auction Secondary-market purchase
What you buy A specified new CUSIP sold by the issuer, such as a Treasury auction issue. An already issued bond offered by a dealer or another market participant.
How price is set The auction determines the final price or yield. A noncompetitive bidder accepts the auction result. You accept or negotiate a displayed dealer price; it may be above or below face value.
Order choices Individuals commonly use a noncompetitive bid through a broker, dealer, or financial institution. You select a specific inventory item and enter quantity and order instructions supported by the broker.
Timing Funds are committed for the auction and the security settles on the issue’s schedule. Execution depends on available inventory, market hours, and the broker’s settlement process.
Main trade-off You do not choose the final auction yield, but you avoid negotiating a secondary-market spread. You can select maturity, coupon, and yield from available bonds, but spread, liquidity, and dealer compensation affect the result.

TreasuryDirect explains that most individual investors bid noncompetitively. A competitive bid specifies the yield or discount rate and can be rejected if the auction result is less favorable; use that method only if you understand the auction rules and the risk of receiving no allocation.

Step-by-step: buying a bond through a broker

1. Confirm the account and funding

  1. Sign in to the brokerage account and look for a menu labeled Bonds, Fixed income, New issues, or Bond marketplace. If no such area appears, ask the firm whether fixed-income trading must be activated.
  2. Confirm that the account type permits the security. Retirement accounts can have different settlement, cash, and tax handling from taxable accounts.
  3. Transfer cash early enough for the broker’s stated settlement deadline. Keep a reserve for accrued interest and disclosed charges rather than funding only the face amount.
  4. Read the firm’s fixed-income agreement for order cutoffs, settlement conventions, odd-lot rules, and whether orders are executable immediately or are requests for a dealer quote.

TreasuryDirect’s marketable-securities FAQ lists a $100 minimum purchase for a Treasury bill, note, bond, TIPS, or FRN. That is the TreasuryDirect minimum; a broker may require a different dollar increment, a larger minimum, or a particular par-value multiple. The order ticket controls what that brokerage will accept.

2. Select an auction or an existing bond

For a new Treasury issue, open the broker’s auction or new-issue section, choose the announced CUSIP and maturity, and select a noncompetitive bid unless you have a specific reason to submit a competitive bid. The auction sets the price or rate; you cannot lock in a personal yield before results are announced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a secondary-market order, open the inventory search and filter the available bonds. You are buying at the current market price, not at the original issue price. A bond with a high coupon can still offer a modest return if it trades at a premium, while a lower-coupon bond can offer a higher return when purchased below face value.

3. Search the inventory precisely

Use as many identifying fields as the platform supports. Searching only by issuer can return bonds with very different risks and cash-flow dates.

  • Issuer and sector: Identify the federal government, state or local authority, corporate borrower, agency, or other issuer.
  • CUSIP: Use the identifier when you already know the exact bond; verify every digit before ordering.
  • Maturity: Filter by the date when principal is scheduled to be repaid.
  • Coupon: Compare the stated interest rate, but do not treat it as the same as your investment return.
  • Credit information: Review the broker’s rating and issuer information, then read the offering or continuing-disclosure material when available.
  • Call status: Determine whether the issuer can repay the bond before maturity and at what dates and prices.
  • Tax category: Check whether interest is federally taxable, exempt from state or local tax, or subject to other rules for your account and residence.

Ask when and at what price the bond last traded. FINRA cautions that an illiquid bond may not have traded for days or weeks, so a displayed quote may not represent a recent, readily available market.

4. Read price and yield together

The quote should show a clean price, accrued interest, and one or more yields. Clean price is the quoted value of the bond excluding interest that has accumulated since the last coupon date. Accrued interest is added to the amount you pay and is normally reimbursed to you through the next coupon payment. Confirm how the platform displays these amounts before comparing orders.

Quote item What it tells you Question to ask
Par or face amount The principal scheduled for repayment, normally quoted in $1,000 units for many bonds. What minimum and increment does this broker permit?
Clean price The bond’s market price before accrued interest, usually expressed as a percentage of par. Is the bond trading at a premium, near par, or a discount?
Accrued interest Interest earned by the seller since the last coupon date and charged to the buyer at settlement. What is the total cash debit including this amount?
Coupon rate The contract’s stated interest rate and payment schedule. Is the coupon fixed, floating, or inflation-adjusted?
Yield to maturity An annualized return assumption if you hold to maturity, payments are made as promised, and coupons can be reinvested at the stated assumption. Does the calculation include the displayed price and accrued-interest treatment?
Yield to call A return estimate if the issuer exercises a stated call option instead of waiting for maturity. Which call date and call price are being used?
Bid and ask The prices at which a dealer may buy from you or sell to you; the difference is the spread. How wide is the spread, and is the quote firm or indicative?

TreasuryDirect notes that a bond or note may trade above, at, or below face value. Your realized return depends on the purchase price, coupon payments, reinvestment, whether the bond is called, and the issuer’s credit outcome. The coupon alone does not tell you what you will earn.

5. Evaluate credit, calls, taxes, and liquidity

Credit risk

Treasury securities are obligations of the U.S. government, while corporate, municipal, agency, and other bonds depend on the applicable issuer or program. Compare the issuer’s financial condition, stated rating, seniority, and repayment structure. A higher yield can compensate for greater default or downgrade risk; it is not a free increase in return.

Call and other early-redemption terms

A callable bond can be redeemed before its stated maturity. If rates fall, the issuer may call the bond and return principal when reinvestment opportunities are less attractive. Compare yield to call with yield to maturity and read the first call date, call price, notice provisions, and any make-whole language.

Tax treatment

Interest from a bond can have different federal, state, and local treatment depending on the issuer and your residence. Municipal bonds may offer tax advantages for eligible investors, but the benefit depends on your tax bracket and the specific issue. Confirm the tax status in the offering documents and with a qualified tax professional; do not infer it from the issuer’s name alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Liquidity

Liquidity is the ability to sell near a fair market price. Trading can be sparse, especially for smaller corporate or municipal issues. Check recent trade information and the available TRACE data for corporate bonds or EMMA data for municipal bonds. If no recent trade exists, assume that a sale may require accepting a lower price than the last displayed quote.

6. Check compensation and other costs before submitting

A broker can be paid in different ways. In an agency transaction, the firm routes your order and may charge a stated commission. In a principal transaction, the firm sells from its own inventory or buys the bond into its own account. FINRA explains: “If the firm acts as principal, it’s executing trades from its own account, and the price you pay or receive might include a markup (when it sells to you) or markdown (when it buys from you), which is the firm’s compensation for the transaction.”

  • Ask whether the quote is principal or agency.
  • Ask for any commission, markup, markdown, platform charge, or other transaction fee before you authorize the order.
  • Ask whether the quoted yield reflects the broker’s compensation and whether account-level fees are excluded.
  • Compare the bid and ask, not just the yield, because compensation can be embedded in the price.
  • Save the pre-trade disclosure and compare it with the final confirmation.

There is no universal brokerage commission or spread. The amount varies with the security, broker, account, order size, and market conditions, so a generic “typical fee” would be misleading.

7. Submit the order and verify the confirmation

  1. Enter the par quantity or dollar amount allowed by the platform.
  2. Choose the order type and time-in-force shown by the broker. Some bond marketplaces use a request-for-quote process rather than a continuously executable limit order.
  3. Review the total estimated debit, including clean price, accrued interest, commissions, markups, markdowns, and any other stated charge.
  4. Submit only after checking the exact CUSIP, issuer, coupon, maturity, call feature, quantity, and settlement date.
  5. After execution, download the confirmation. Verify the executed price, yield, accrued interest, fees, dealer capacity, and expected settlement date.

Do not assume that a displayed yield includes every fee charged at the account level. The confirmation and fee schedule are the controlling records.

How the main bond categories differ

Bond type What to compare Market-data resource or caution
Treasury bills, notes, bonds, TIPS, and FRNs Maturity, auction or secondary price, inflation or floating-rate mechanics, and tax treatment. TreasuryDirect lists a $100 minimum purchase; brokers may use different increments.
Corporate bonds Issuer credit, seniority, maturity, coupon, call provisions, spread, and liquidity. FINRA points investors to TRACE for corporate-bond trade information.
Municipal bonds Issuer and project credit, call terms, insurance if any, tax status, maturity, and yield after taxes. Use EMMA disclosures and trade information; tax benefits are investor- and issue-specific.
Agency and other bonds Whether repayment is a direct government obligation or depends on an issuing entity, plus price, yield, call, tax, and liquidity. Availability and protections vary by broker and issuer; read the security documents.

What happens after purchase?

Brokerage-held securities are commonly registered in the brokerage’s “street name” and maintained in book-entry form rather than represented by a paper certificate in your name. The account statement records your beneficial ownership, coupon payments, and principal repayments. Confirm how the firm handles notices for calls, tenders, defaults, and corporate actions.

Interest payments normally arrive according to the bond’s schedule. At maturity, the issuer’s principal payment is credited if the obligation is paid. A callable bond can return principal earlier, so monitor notices and do not assume the maturity date is the only possible end date.

If you need to sell before maturity, request a current bid and compare it with recent trades. An infrequently traded bond may require a price concession, and the amount you receive can be below your purchase price even when the issuer is still making scheduled payments.

SIPC protection is not insurance against a bond’s price decline, interest-rate loss, liquidity discount, or issuer default. Common problems and how to resolve them

The bond does not appear in the search

  • Confirm that fixed-income trading is enabled.
  • Search by the full CUSIP rather than a shortened issuer name.
  • Remove overly narrow maturity, rating, or quantity filters.
  • Ask whether the issue is restricted to institutional accounts or unavailable in your account type.

The order requires more cash than the face value

Review accrued interest and any principal-transaction markup or commission. A secondary-market buyer normally pays the seller’s accrued coupon interest in addition to the clean price. The final debit can therefore exceed the displayed par amount.

The yield changes between the list and order ticket

Bond prices move, inventory can disappear, and the platform may recalculate yield using the actual execution price, settlement date, or call assumption. Treat the order-ticket quote as the relevant pre-trade figure and save it with the confirmation.

You cannot sell at the last quoted price

The last trade is historical, not a guaranteed bid. Request a live bid, check TRACE or EMMA where applicable, and compare the proposed price with recent transactions. If trading has been dormant for days or weeks, a wide spread or discount is possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bond was called earlier than expected

Review the call schedule before buying and monitor issuer notices. A call can end coupon payments and return principal before the stated maturity, forcing you to reinvest at then-current rates.

A practical decision example

Suppose you want five years of income and are considering two bonds from the same general sector. One is a new Treasury issue available at auction; the other is an already issued corporate bond maturing in roughly five years. The Treasury auction lets you submit a noncompetitive bid, but the final yield is unknown until the auction. The corporate bond lets you see a current price and yield, but you must evaluate its credit, call schedule, spread, accrued interest, and TRACE trading history.

  1. Decide whether the corporate credit risk and possible call are acceptable.
  2. Compare each option’s maturity and expected cash-flow dates rather than comparing coupon rates alone.
  3. For the corporate bond, calculate the total debit including accrued interest and dealer compensation.
  4. For the Treasury auction, confirm the broker’s bid deadline, minimum increment, and settlement date.
  5. Choose the route that fits your need for certainty of issuer risk, timing, liquidity, and available cash.

This example does not establish that one security is better. It illustrates why an auction result, a secondary-market quote, and a coupon rate are not interchangeable measures.

Final pre-trade checklist

  • Fixed-income trading is enabled for the correct account.
  • Settled cash covers principal, accrued interest, and disclosed costs.
  • You identified whether the order is a new issue or secondary-market purchase.
  • The CUSIP, issuer, maturity, coupon, and call terms match your intended bond.
  • You reviewed price, yield to maturity, and yield to call where relevant.
  • You assessed credit quality, tax treatment, liquidity, and recent trade information.
  • You know whether the broker acts as agent or principal and what compensation applies.
  • You understand the order type, time-in-force, settlement date, and cancellation rules.
  • You will retain the confirmation and monitor coupon, call, maturity, and sale information.
