To buy GameStop shares online, open and verify an eligible brokerage account, deposit enough cash, search for GameStop Corp. or ticker GME, choose a market or limit order, review the details, and submit it. Then check the order status until it shows filled; a submitted order is not automatically an executed purchase.
This is a process guide, not a recommendation to buy GME. GameStop’s price and volatility, broker availability, fees, order handling and settlement rules can change. Review your broker’s current disclosures and GameStop’s filings before trading.
What you need before placing a GME order
You need a brokerage account that is available in your jurisdiction, approved for stock trading and funded with buying power. The account application normally requires identity, tax and financial information, followed by the broker’s customer agreement and required disclosures. You should be able to access the broker’s trade screen and see whether your account is a cash or margin account.

- Verified identity: Your application and identity checks must be complete before trading is enabled.
- Available funds: Cash must be deposited or transferred and recognized as available buying power.
- The correct security: The trade screen should identify the issuer as GameStop Corp. and the ticker as GME.
- A defined order instruction: Decide whether a market order’s execution priority or a limit order’s price ceiling is more important for this trade.
GME can move sharply. Decide in advance how much money you can afford to expose to a single company, and understand that a loss in the share price is yours to bear.

How to choose an online broker for GME
Do not choose solely because an app advertises commission-free trades. Compare the full service, account terms and execution information. FINRA recommends considering the account type, costs and services and using BrokerCheck to research firms and registered professionals.

Read the broker’s Form CRS, where applicable, and the customer agreement before accepting the account. Confirm the broker serves your country or state; availability and features are not universal.
Open and verify the brokerage account
- Start the application. Use the broker’s official website or mobile app and select the account type you intend to use. Provide your legal name, address, date of birth, tax details and other information requested.
- Complete identity checks. The broker may ask for identification documents or additional information. Trading usually remains restricted until verification is complete.
- Read the agreements. Review the customer agreement, fee schedule, privacy terms, margin disclosures and Form CRS where provided. Pay attention to how the broker handles orders, cash, unsettled trades and account transfers.
- Check permissions. Confirm that stock trading is enabled. If you do not want borrowing or margin exposure, select a cash account or disable margin if the broker allows that choice.
- Save your account details. Keep confirmation of account approval and note the support contact and account-number information in a secure place.
Fund the account
Use the broker’s transfer function to connect a bank account or another permitted funding source. Enter the amount you intend to use and review any stated hold or availability period. A displayed balance may not equal the amount immediately available for trading, so check the broker’s “buying power” or equivalent field.

In a cash account, the purchase must be paid for before you sell the security. The broker may also distinguish settled cash from recently deposited or unsettled funds. Read the broker’s settlement disclosures so that a later sale does not create a cash-account violation.
- Transfer only money you can leave in the account for the required period.
- Check whether the broker permits the intended funding source and currency.
- Verify the available-to-trade amount after the transfer is credited.
- Do not assume instant access to a bank transfer merely because the transfer was submitted.
Find GameStop and verify the security
- Open the broker’s trade or order-entry screen.
- Search for GameStop Corp. or enter the ticker GME.
- Confirm the issuer name, ticker and any security-description details shown by the broker.
- Check that you are on the buy side of the order ticket, not sell, short or another product category.
Do not rely on a logo, a partial company name or a search suggestion alone. Confirm the full issuer details before entering an order, particularly if the broker lists multiple instruments with similar names.

Choose between a market order and a limit order

When a market order may fit
A market order is designed to seek execution rather than guarantee a particular price. The quote you see is an indication, not a locked offer. Between the quote, routing and execution, the available price can change. This difference is especially relevant during sharp moves, at the market open or close, or when trading outside regular hours if the broker permits it.
When a limit order may fit
A limit order lets you specify the highest price you will pay. The order can execute at that price or a better one, but it will not fill merely because you submitted it. If GME stays above your limit, the order remains open or expires according to its time-in-force instruction. A limit order therefore controls price but does not guarantee execution.
The SEC describes a limit order as an order to buy or sell a security at a specific price. Check the broker’s available order types, time-in-force choices and any restrictions before relying on a particular instruction.
Enter the quantity and order instructions
Whole shares
Enter the number of whole shares you want to buy. The order ticket should show an estimated value based on the current quote or your limit price. Make sure that estimate fits within your available buying power and leaves room for any applicable fees.
Fractional shares
If the broker supports fractional GME trading, enter either a fractional quantity or a dollar amount, depending on the ticket. Fractional-share policies vary: some brokers limit the order types, trading sessions, minimum amount, corporate-action treatment or transferability of fractional positions. Read those terms before assuming a fractional order behaves like a whole-share order.

Time-in-force and trading session
Select the time-in-force offered by the broker, such as an instruction that remains active for the current trading day or one that stays open longer. The exact labels and availability differ by broker. If extended-hours trading is offered, review its separate liquidity, spread and execution warnings before enabling it.

Review and submit the order
- Check the action: It must say buy.
- Check the security: GameStop Corp., ticker GME.
- Check the amount: Whole or fractional quantity, or the dollar amount you entered.
- Check the price instruction: For a limit order, verify the maximum price and decimal precision. For a market order, recognize that no fixed purchase price is specified.
- Check time-in-force: Confirm when the order will expire or whether it can remain open.
- Check buying power and costs: Review the estimated total, commission or markup, regulatory charges and any other fee shown.
- Check the account setting: Make sure the order is being placed in the intended cash or margin account.
- Submit once: After reviewing, send the order and wait for the broker’s confirmation screen or notification.
Do not tap the submit button repeatedly if the app appears slow. Repeated submissions can create duplicate orders. Instead, open the order activity page and determine whether the first request was accepted.
How to know whether your GME purchase went through
A confirmation that the broker received your request is not proof that shares were purchased. Open the order-status or activity section and inspect the current state.

| Open, working or pending | The order has not completed and may still be eligible for execution. | Review the limit price, session and expiration. Cancel or modify it only if the broker permits and you understand the effect. |
| Cancelled or rejected | The order will not execute as currently entered. | Read the broker’s reason, correct the issue and submit a new order only after confirming no part of the original order filled. |
| Expired | The time-in-force ended without a remaining execution. | Decide whether current conditions justify a new order; do not assume the old instruction is still active. |
For a filled order, record the quantity, execution price, date and time. Prices can move between the displayed quote, order routing and execution, so the fill price may differ from what you saw before pressing submit.
Costs, routing and execution quality
Brokerage accounts can involve commissions or markups, bid-ask spreads, service charges, regulatory fees, transfer charges and other account costs. The exact amount depends on the broker, account type, order and transaction. Read the current fee schedule rather than relying on a general “free trading” claim.

When you submit an order, the broker routes it to an exchange or market maker. The process is not necessarily instantaneous. Routing arrangements, available liquidity and the broker’s handling practices can affect transaction economics. Review the broker’s execution disclosures and order-routing information when comparing firms.
Cash accounts, margin and settlement considerations
Cash account
In a cash account, you pay for a purchase with available cash. The SEC states: “If you purchase a security in a cash account, you must pay for it before you can sell it.” Your broker may show separate figures for settled cash, unsettled proceeds and buying power. Follow the broker’s settlement rules before selling recently purchased shares.
Margin account
A margin account can provide borrowing capacity, but it also introduces interest charges, maintenance requirements and the possibility that the broker will liquidate positions if requirements are not met. Read the margin agreement and disclosures before enabling it. Buying GME on margin can magnify losses as well as gains.

Download or save the trade confirmation, account statement and fee details. Records help you verify the fill, calculate your tax basis and resolve a dispute with the broker. Keep them in a secure location and protect your login with a strong, unique password and multi-factor authentication when available.

Shareholder services after you own GME
Once a purchase is executed, the broker’s records determine how you receive statements, tax documents and shareholder communications. Voting and other corporate-action procedures vary by broker. GameStop’s annual-meeting information for 2026 lists the meeting date as July 7, 2026, and notes that voting methods differ by broker. Check your broker’s notifications and GameStop’s current meeting materials for the applicable instructions and deadlines.
Troubleshooting common problems
“I submitted the order but see no shares.”
Open order activity and look for a filled, partially filled, open, pending, cancelled or rejected status. A submission receipt only confirms that the broker accepted the request for processing. If the order is open, it has not completed.
“The market order filled at a different price.”
A market order seeks the best available price when executed; it does not guarantee the quote shown at submission. Review the execution report, including the time and venue information supplied by the broker. Fast movement or limited liquidity can produce a different fill.
“My limit order did not execute.”
Check whether GME reached your limit and whether the order is still open, expired or cancelled. If the market never offered your limit price or better, no fill is expected. Verify the time-in-force before deciding whether to place a new order.
“My available cash is lower than my deposit.”
Look for a transfer hold, unsettled cash, a pending deposit or fees. The broker’s buying-power figure—not the raw bank-transfer amount—is the relevant figure for a new purchase.
“The broker will not accept fractional GME shares.”
Fractional trading is broker-specific and may be limited to certain order types or sessions. Use whole shares if that matches your plan, or review another properly registered broker’s current fractional-share terms without assuming that every broker offers the same feature.
“I placed the order twice by mistake.”
Stop submitting new requests and inspect the activity page for both orders. Cancel any unfilled duplicate if the broker allows cancellation, then confirm the status and quantity of every order before the market moves further.
