For a store-wide DRM-free policy, start with GOG: open the purchase page, choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS, and save every setup file, language pack, patch and redistributable. Independent games on itch.io can also be DRM-free, but each creator controls the files and launch requirements. After downloading, record the version, test the installation with networking disabled, and keep two copies in locations you control.
What “DRM-free” and “offline installer” actually mean
Digital rights management (DRM) is a technical check that controls installation, copying, activation or use. A genuinely DRM-free release does not require that check for the supported game build. An offline installer is the complete set of files needed to install that build without contacting a store, launcher or activation server.
Those terms do not mean that every feature works without the internet. A single-player executable can run locally while multiplayer matchmaking, dedicated servers, cloud saves, achievements, account services, news feeds or other online functions remain dependent on their operators. An offline copy preserves the software you downloaded; it cannot recreate a server that has been closed.
GOG’s quality-assurance documentation describes its policy in unusually direct terms: “DRM-free is a MUST, copy protection is a NO.” The policy also defines DRM-free delivery as having no technical restrictions on installation, copying or activation. GOG’s terms state that single-player content must remain playable offline, while explicitly excluding multiplayer elements that require online services.

itch.io uses a different model. Its Creator FAQ says, “No. itch.io lets users download the games exactly as you uploaded them.” That makes the individual creator’s upload the deciding factor. One title may be a self-contained archive, another an installer, and another a build that still expects a separate runtime or an online account.
Where to buy DRM-free games
GOG: the clearest store-wide choice
GOG is the most predictable starting point when your priority is a launcher-independent, offline-capable single-player copy. On a game’s purchase or library page, select DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS. Download all parts listed for the release rather than assuming that the largest executable is sufficient.
GOG’s quality-assurance process requires games to be playable offline without GOG Galaxy. That is a policy for the supported build, not a promise that multiplayer, cloud synchronization or account services will continue indefinitely. A game can therefore satisfy the offline requirement and still lose online modes when its servers or third-party services disappear.

itch.io is useful for independent and experimental games, but it is creator controlled rather than governed by one uniform store-wide packaging rule. The purchase page lists the files included with your transaction. Inspect those files and the creator’s notes for operating-system builds, launch instructions, required runtimes and whether the download is an archive or an installer.
itch.io’s general FAQ says that most releases include DRM-free builds when those builds are also available on Steam. “Most” is not “all,” and availability can differ by operating system. Treat the statement as a reason to inspect a listing, not as a substitute for checking the specific title.

How to evaluate another store or listing
If you are considering a source other than these two, look for an explicit DRM-free statement and a downloadable file that can be obtained without a launcher. A generic claim such as “works offline” may describe only a temporary offline mode after an online sign-in; it does not establish that you can reinstall later from files you own.
- Policy scope: Is DRM-free delivery a store-wide requirement, or does each publisher decide?
- File completeness: Are all setup parts, language files, patches and redistributables supplied?
- Post-download dependence: Can you install and launch without the store application or an account check?
- Platform coverage: Are Windows, macOS or Linux files actually included for your edition?
- Updates: Can you retrieve older and newer installers, and are patches separate files?
- Online features: Which modes still require servers, accounts or network authentication?
How to buy and download a complete offline copy
- Read the listing before paying. Find an explicit DRM-free statement, the supported operating systems and a description of the downloadable files. Note whether the release is single-player, multiplayer or a mixture.
- Identify every required component. Look for base installers, language packs, optional content, updates, patches and runtime or redistributable packages. If the listing provides several numbered setup files, plan to download all of them.
- Complete the purchase and open the transaction page. On GOG, use DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS rather than relying only on a Galaxy installation. On itch.io, open the purchase page and download each file shown for that transaction.
- Save the original files without renaming them. Put them in a descriptive folder such as
Game/Platform/Version. Keep the exact installer filenames because a multi-part installer may depend on their names and sequence. - Write down the release details. Beside the installers, create a plain-text file containing the game title, platform, version or build number, installer filenames, download date and any launch notes supplied by the seller or creator.
- Make a second copy before modifying anything. Preserve one untouched set. If you later apply a patch, translation, mod or compatibility fix, work from a duplicate so the original installer remains available.
- Install with networking disabled. Disconnect the test computer from Wi-Fi and unplug Ethernet, or block the game and installer temporarily in the operating system firewall. Run the installer and confirm that it does not request a launcher sign-in or activation.
- Test the installed game. Launch the single-player content, create a save, quit, relaunch and load that save while still offline. Record any feature that predictably reports “online only” rather than treating that as an installer failure.
- Verify the archive and backups. Compare file sizes and, when available, record checksums. Keep at least two copies in different locations that you control.
What files should be in your archive?
The phrase “offline installer” can hide a multi-file release. A durable archive should contain more than the first executable you see.

Do not delete an older installer merely because a newer patch exists. A later release may change compatibility, remove content or require a different operating-system setup. Keeping the original and documenting the patch path gives you a reproducible installation.
How to test whether a game is truly usable offline
Prepare a clean test
Use a computer that has not already authenticated the game, or create a separate local user account. Disable network access before launching the installer. This avoids mistaking a cached token or a previously installed launcher component for genuine offline operation.
Install and launch
Run the installer from your archive. A DRM-free build should install without an activation prompt or a requirement to start a store client. If the installer asks for a product key, account login or one-time online validation, record that limitation; the listing’s offline wording may apply only after an earlier activation.

Exercise the saved-game path
Start a new single-player session, save, exit, relaunch and load the save while disconnected. This catches games that start offline but attempt to synchronize or validate when loading. Save-file locations may be local, but cloud synchronization is necessarily unavailable without the network.

Separate local failures from server dependence
A warning about matchmaking, leaderboards, achievements or cloud saves is expected for an offline test. A crash before the main menu, a missing runtime error or an activation request is a packaging or compatibility problem that should be documented and investigated before you rely on the archive.

The practical choice is therefore straightforward: choose GOG when a consistent store policy and a clearly labeled offline-installer workflow matter most; inspect itch.io when you want an independent title and are willing to verify the creator’s exact files yourself.
Preserving installers for the long term
Use a clear folder and naming scheme
A structure such as Game/Platform/Version prevents a future reinstall from becoming a search exercise. Keep the original directory structure inside the download when a multi-part installer expects it. Add a text file with the version, download date, platform, required runtime and any known launch limitation.
Keep originals and patched copies separate
Make a second copy before applying updates, compatibility patches or modifications. Label the untouched set Original and the altered set with the patch version. This lets you return to a known state if a patch breaks installation or a mod changes saved-game compatibility.

Use two independent storage locations
Store one copy on a local drive and another on a NAS, cloud archive or recordable optical media. The locations should not depend on the same device: a second partition on the same failing drive is not an independent backup. Periodically open the archive or compare checksums so silent corruption is discovered while another copy still exists.
Choose optical media by capacity
GOG’s public preservation advice has specifically mentioned CD-R, DVD-R and BD-R media. Select media whose capacity exceeds the complete installer set, not merely the first file. If a release spans several discs, keep a manifest showing which files belong on each disc and retain the original filenames.
Preserve account and purchase information
Offline files reduce dependence on a store, but they do not make account records irrelevant. Keep receipts, order identifiers and the account email in a secure record. If a later download is needed for a missing language pack or a newly issued patch, those details can help recover access.

The download is only a launcher
If the file opens a store client or asks you to install a launcher, return to the transaction page and look specifically for the offline-backup installer option. A launcher installer is not the same as the game’s standalone setup files.
The installer reports a missing part
Check that every numbered file is in one folder, that filenames have not been changed and that the download completed fully. Re-download the missing part from the purchase page and compare its size with the listing or checksum when one is supplied.

The game asks for activation while offline
Stop the test and verify that you used the offline installer rather than a launcher-managed build. Read the title’s release notes for an edition-specific exception. If activation is still required, classify the copy as not independently reinstallable and retain that limitation in your archive notes.
The game launches but saves do not work
Check whether the operating system permits the game to write to its save directory and whether the title expects a local account folder. Cloud saves cannot function without connectivity, so use the local save option and back up the save directory separately.
Multiplayer is unavailable
This is normally a service dependency, not evidence that the single-player installer is defective. Offline files preserve local content; they do not supply matchmaking, authentication, dedicated servers or other hosted systems.

Because creators upload their own files, a purchase may include only one platform. Check the listing’s platform labels and notes before buying. If the needed build is absent, the archive cannot provide it later unless the creator adds it or supplies it separately.
A decision checklist before you buy
- Does the listing explicitly call the game DRM-free, or does it only promise an offline mode?
- Can you see a downloadable installer or archive rather than only a launcher?
- Are all required platform files, language packs, patches and redistributables identified?
- Will the supported single-player build install, launch and save without an account check?
- Which features will remain online-only after purchase?
- Have you confirmed that the files match your operating system and edition?
- Do you have enough storage for the complete installer set and a second copy?
If the answers are clear, download immediately after purchase, test the files while disconnected and document the exact build. That sequence turns a store transaction into a reproducible offline installation rather than an assumption that a launcher will always remain available.
