Overseas investors have three practical ways to get exposure to China Construction Bank (CCB): buy its Hong Kong H shares (ticker 939, often shown as 00939), buy its Shanghai A shares (601939) through Shanghai–Hong Kong Stock Connect, or trade the unsponsored US OTC ADR (CICHY). The right route depends on your country of residence, broker access, currency, order-size rules, liquidity and tax treatment.
Before placing an order, verify the exact ticker and exchange in your broker’s order ticket. CCB is a Chinese bank with separate share classes, different settlement systems and different disclosure channels; a familiar-looking symbol is not enough.

CCB’s FAQ identifies the Hong Kong and Shanghai listings directly: “H-shares of CCB are traded on the Main Board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited under the ticker symbol ‘939’. A-shares are traded on Shanghai Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol ‘601939’.” A broker may add leading zeros, an exchange suffix or a regional code, so use the venue shown beside the symbol rather than relying on the number alone.
Choose the route that your broker can actually execute
Hong Kong H shares: the usual direct international listing
H shares are traded in Hong Kong dollars on HKEX and are generally the most straightforward direct listing for an investor outside mainland China. You need an account approved for Hong Kong equities and a broker willing to onboard residents of your country. The broker, not CCB, determines whether your address, identity documents, sanctions screening and account type qualify.
The 1,000-share board lot is important. A round-lot purchase at the quoted price requires cash for 1,000 shares plus commission, exchange charges, taxes and any currency-conversion cost. Some brokers offer odd-lot trading through a separate order board or service; odd-lot liquidity and spreads can differ from the normal market, so read the broker’s rules before assuming that a smaller order is available.

Shanghai A shares through Stock Connect
Shanghai Connect is the northbound part of the trading link between Hong Kong and Shanghai. HKEX describes it as a programme developed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange and China Securities Depository and Clearing Corporation that facilitates trading between the two markets. HKEX says the programme is open to Hong Kong and overseas investors, including individuals, for selected Shanghai-listed securities.
Eligibility is dynamic. A broker must support the northbound service, and 601939 must be on the current eligible-security list when you trade. Market holidays, daily quotas, order types, settlement arrangements and temporary suspensions can affect execution. Check the current HKEX Stock Connect pages and your broker’s northbound notice on the day you plan to trade.

CICHY OTC ADR
Citi’s depositary-receipt database lists CICHY as an active, open, unsponsored ADR. Each DR represents 20 ordinary shares. An ADR can be operationally simpler if your existing broker supports US OTC securities, because you may avoid opening a Hong Kong or Stock Connect-enabled account.
OTC trading can have wider spreads and less displayed depth than a primary exchange. Your broker may restrict OTC orders, show delayed quotes or apply a minimum commission. Depositary fees can be deducted from dividends or charged through other corporate-action entries. Review the latest Citi notice and your broker statement for every distribution rather than assuming that the gross dividend equals your cash receipt.
Pre-trade checks for an overseas purchase
- Confirm the instrument. Open the security details and check the full name, ticker, exchange and share class. Select 939/00939 for Hong Kong H shares, 601939 for Shanghai A shares or CICHY for the ADR. Do not submit an order until the venue is visible.
- Confirm residency eligibility. Read the broker’s country list, market-access agreement, tax forms and sanctions restrictions. A broker that offers US stocks may not offer HKEX, Stock Connect or OTC securities to every client.
- Complete identity and tax onboarding. Expect identity verification, beneficial-owner information, tax residence declarations and, where applicable, an agreement for Hong Kong or mainland-linked trading.
- Check funding and settlement currency. H shares normally settle in Hong Kong dollars; Stock Connect quotes and settlement involve renminbi; CICHY trades in US dollars. Your broker’s conversion rate and FX spread can materially change the all-in cost.
- Read the fee schedule. Include commission, exchange and regulatory levies, stamp duty where applicable, custody or platform fees, FX spread, minimum-ticket charges and ADR depositary fees.
- Check the quote timestamp. Some interfaces display delayed prices. Compare the quote’s currency, timestamp and market-status indicator before choosing a limit price.
- Decide how much exposure you can tolerate. Bank-sector earnings, Chinese economic policy, interest rates, currency movements, regulation and geopolitical restrictions can all affect CCB securities. Buying access is not the same as establishing that an investment is suitable.
How to buy CCB H shares in Hong Kong
- Enable Hong Kong equities in your brokerage account and accept any HKEX market-risk disclosures.
- Search for China Construction Bank and select the Main Board listing with ticker 939 or 00939. Confirm that the security description says H share and that the currency is HKD.
- Deposit enough cash for the intended quantity, the 1,000-share board lot and a reserve for commission, levies and FX conversion.
- Choose an order type. A limit order lets you set the highest price you will pay; a market order can fill at several prices when the spread or depth is uncertain. For an unfamiliar venue, a limit order is usually easier to control.
- Enter the quantity using the broker’s lot convention. If the ticket rejects a quantity below 1,000, look for an odd-lot facility rather than repeatedly resubmitting the normal-board order.
- Review the estimated HKD consideration, FX conversion, commission, taxes and validity period. Submit only after confirming the exchange and share class.
- After execution, save the contract note. It records the fill price, quantity, charges and trade date; the final settlement date appears according to the broker’s Hong Kong timetable.
H-share prices can move while your currency is being converted. If your base currency is not HKD, track both the share price and the HKD-to-base-currency rate when measuring performance.

How to buy 601939 through Shanghai Stock Connect
- Ask the broker whether your account has northbound Shanghai Connect access, not merely Hong Kong-share access.
- Check HKEX’s current eligible-security list and confirm that 601939 is included on the intended trading date. Inclusion can change after index, listing or regulatory reviews.
- Read the broker’s Stock Connect guide for trading hours, holidays, order types, quotas, currency conversion and settlement. Northbound trading can be unavailable when one market is open but the other is closed.
- Search for the Shanghai listing using 601939 and verify that the ticket identifies SSE, A shares and renminbi pricing.
- Enter a quantity consistent with the 100-share board-lot rule unless the broker explicitly supports the relevant sell-side odd-lot process. Buying and selling odd lots may not follow identical rules.
- Use a limit order if the quote is thin or the market is moving. Confirm whether the displayed price is real-time and whether the broker will reject orders outside its permitted price band or session.
- Review the estimated renminbi consideration, FX rate, commission, exchange charges and any Stock Connect-specific costs before submitting.
- Keep the trade confirmation and monitor settlement. A Stock Connect position may have different transfer, voting, dividend and corporate-action procedures from a domestic Shanghai account.
HKEX reported approximately RMB2.6 trillion of international-investor shareholdings held through Stock Connect at the end of 2025, representing 71% of those investors’ total shareholdings. It also reported 18,276 SPSA accounts on 27 February 2026 and 4,119 eligible securities across Southbound and Northbound Stock Connect at the end of 2025. These are programme-wide figures, not a statement about CCB’s liquidity or future performance.

How to buy the CICHY ADR
- Confirm that your broker permits US OTC trading and that CICHY is available to residents of your country.
- Open the security details and verify the symbol CICHY, the description of China Construction Bank’s ADR and the 20-ordinary-share-per-DR ratio.
- Review the quote timestamp, average volume information and bid–ask spread. OTC quotes can be less continuous than exchange quotes.
- Check the broker’s commission, minimum charge, settlement cycle and corporate-action policy for unsponsored ADRs.
- Place a limit order unless you have a specific reason to accept the execution uncertainty of a market order.
- After settlement, retain the confirmation and monitor ADR notices. Depositary fees, withholding and FX conversion can reduce the amount credited to your account.
An ADR is a depositary instrument, not a separate operating company. Its value is linked to the underlying ordinary shares through the stated ratio, but the trading price can temporarily diverge because of market hours, liquidity, currency conversion, fees and supply or demand for the receipts.

Calculate the all-in amount before ordering: trade value plus commission, exchange or regulatory charges, FX spread, custody costs and any minimum-ticket fee. For the ADR, also estimate the effect of depositary charges on distributions. A low headline commission does not guarantee a low total cost if the FX spread or bid–ask spread is wide.
Where to track CCB’s price, filings and dividends
Use the correct market quote
Track the same instrument you own. A Hong Kong H-share quote, a Shanghai A-share quote and CICHY are related but not interchangeable. Record the ticker, currency, exchange and quote timestamp in your portfolio. If you compare prices across markets, convert currencies and account for the ADR’s 20:1 ratio before drawing conclusions.

Use CCB’s investor-relations disclosures for company events
CCB’s investor-relations site publishes periodic results, annual reports, a corporate calendar and dividend-history links. Use those primary announcements for earnings dates, dividend declarations, share-capital changes and material events. Broker calendars and financial portals can be useful alerts, but the issuer’s announcement controls the record date, payment date and declared amount.
Use HKEX for Stock Connect status
HKEX’s Stock Connect pages provide current programme rules, eligible-security information and market-infrastructure details. Check them when a trade is rejected, when a security disappears from a search list or when a holiday changes the northbound session.

CCB’s 2024 annual report says dividend income from H shares held by offshore-resident individuals is generally subject to 10% withholding, unless a tax treaty or another rule produces a different result. It also describes a general 10% withholding rate for dividends paid to overseas non-resident enterprises. Those are general issuer-described rules, not a personal tax calculation.

Your final result can depend on tax residence, individual or corporate status, treaty eligibility, account structure, beneficial-owner documentation and local reporting rules. Keep the dividend statement, withholding certificate and broker transaction record. Ask a qualified tax adviser how foreign tax credits, treaty claims and reporting apply in your jurisdiction.

CICHY distributions can show both withholding and depositary charges before the net amount reaches you. Reconcile the gross dividend, each deduction and the net credit on the broker statement. Do not use the H-share withholding description as a substitute for the ADR’s current notice.
CCB-specific corporate and market context
China Construction Bank reported gross proceeds of RMB105.0 billion in 2025 from an issuance of 11,589 million A shares to specific investors. An issuance can change share capital and ownership percentages; read the relevant company announcement when assessing per-share figures or dilution.
Stock Connect participation figures demonstrate the scale of the cross-border infrastructure, not a guarantee of execution quality for every CCB order. Liquidity, spreads and available size still depend on the particular share class, trading session and broker routing.
Common failure messages and practical fixes
“Security unavailable” or no quote
- Check that you selected the correct venue and share class.
- For 601939, confirm current Stock Connect eligibility and that northbound trading is open.
- For CICHY, confirm OTC permissions and whether the broker restricts unsponsored ADRs.
- Ask whether the quote is delayed or temporarily suspended rather than assuming the listing has been cancelled.
Order rejected for quantity
- Use 1,000-share multiples for the normal Hong Kong board and 100-share multiples for the normal Shanghai board.
- Look for a separately labelled odd-lot order service.
- Check whether the broker applies a minimum cash or value requirement in addition to the exchange lot.
Order rejected for currency or funding
- Confirm that the account can convert into HKD, RMB or USD as required.
- Check whether conversion must be completed before order entry or occurs automatically at execution.
- Leave a cash buffer for commission, levies and FX movement.
Dividend is lower than expected
- Compare the declared gross amount with withholding and any ADR depositary fee.
- Check the record date and whether you held the security through the relevant ex-dividend period.
- Ask the broker for the corporate-action statement before filing a tax claim.
Risk checklist before you trade
- Bank-sector risk: credit quality, loan growth, net interest margins, provisioning and capital requirements can affect earnings.
- China-market risk: economic policy, property-market conditions, regulation and geopolitical developments can move prices or restrict access.
- Currency risk: HKD, RMB and USD exposures can change your home-currency return even when the local quote is unchanged.
- Trading and settlement risk: holidays, quotas, suspensions, lot rules and broker cut-off times can delay or prevent an order.
- Liquidity risk: a wide spread or thin OTC market can make the execution price materially different from the last displayed quote.
- Corporate-action risk: dividends, rights, conversions and share-capital changes may be processed differently across H shares, A shares and ADRs.
- Tax risk: withholding and reporting depend on your circumstances and can change with law or treaty interpretation.
Buying CCB from overseas is therefore an execution problem first: identify the exact security, confirm that your broker and residence are eligible, price every fee and currency conversion, and verify the lot and settlement rules before sending the order. Track company information through CCB’s investor-relations disclosures and market-access rules through HKEX, while treating any investment decision as separate from the mechanics of placing a trade.
