If you choose direct ownership, compare the provider and its custody terms before depositing money, secure your account, and understand whether you or the provider controls the private keys. No wallet or exchange removes Bitcoin’s price risk, and neither self-custody nor third-party custody is risk-free.
Decide what you want to buy
Buying Bitcoin directly means acquiring the cryptocurrency through a platform or other service and deciding how it will be held. A spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) is different: it offers price exposure through an investment product rather than giving you Bitcoin to manage in a wallet. The SEC says spot bitcoin ETPs can avoid some risks of transacting directly on a crypto platform or handling wallet keys, but they still carry Bitcoin’s volatility and investment-product risks. Consider which kind of exposure you want before comparing services. SEC investor bulletin on spot bitcoin ETPs.
Bitcoin is highly speculative and its price can be volatile, according to the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy. A purchase can lose value; a buying guide cannot promise a return or determine whether Bitcoin is suitable for you. SEC investor bulletin on bitcoin and crypto asset risks.
Understand wallets and custody before you fund an account
A wallet does not contain Bitcoin in the way a physical wallet holds cash. The SEC explains: “Crypto wallets do not store crypto assets themselves; instead, they store the ‘private keys’ or passcodes for your crypto assets.” Bitcoin is recorded on its network; the keys authorize access and transactions. If you lose the keys and cannot restore them, you may permanently lose access. SEC retail custody bulletin, Dec. 12, 2025.

| Choice | Who controls the keys? | Main trade-off | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party custody, such as a provider-held balance | The provider manages access to the keys. | You avoid sole responsibility for key management, but depend on the provider’s security and continued operation. | Can you withdraw or transfer Bitcoin? What happens if the provider fails? What do its insurance terms cover or exclude? Does it lend or commingle customer assets? |
| Self-custody with a hot wallet | You control the keys. | Internet-connected wallets are convenient but more exposed to cyberthreats. You are responsible for protecting and recovering the keys. | How will you secure the device and recovery phrase? Can you reliably restore access? |
| Self-custody with a cold wallet | You control the keys. | Cold wallets are typically physical devices and generally less exposed to cyberthreats, but can be lost, damaged, or stolen. | How will you protect the device and recovery phrase from physical loss, damage, and theft? |
These are custody approaches, not risk-free rankings. A cold-wallet device is optional if you choose self-custody; it is not required to buy Bitcoin. The SEC’s guidance does not endorse a particular exchange or hardware-wallet model. SEC retail custody bulletin.
Check a provider before depositing money
Provider availability, legal and regulatory status, fees, and account procedures depend on your country and can change. The reader’s location is unspecified, so verify current details with the provider and relevant official authorities where you live rather than assuming a service is available or protected. The SEC recommends investigating a custodian before entrusting it with crypto assets. SEC retail custody bulletin.

- Insurance: Read the actual terms, exclusions, and limits. Do not assume a marketing claim means your balance is insured against every loss or that you will be reimbursed if the provider fails.
- Use of customer assets: Check whether the provider may lend or commingle assets. Understand what that could mean for access and recovery.
- Privacy: Review what account and transaction information the service collects and how its privacy policy says that information is used.
- Fees: Look for annual asset-based, transaction, transfer, setup, and account-closure fees. These are categories to check, not a quote for any provider; confirm the current schedule before funding.
Secure the account and protect recovery information
- Use a strong, unique password for the provider account.
- Enable multi-factor authentication if the provider offers it, and protect the method you use to receive or approve sign-ins.
- Check addresses and requests carefully. Be alert to phishing messages that imitate a provider or urge you to act quickly.
- Never share a private key or seed phrase. A seed phrase can restore a wallet, so store it securely and keep it private; anyone who obtains it may be able to access the wallet.

Make a first purchase without assuming one universal process
There is no single purchase flow, minimum, payment method, or settlement time established for every country and provider. Follow the current instructions from a service that is available in your jurisdiction, and check official local guidance for tax and reporting obligations. Recognize a Bitcoin payment scam
A person you met online or through an app who urges you to buy Bitcoin and send it to them as an “investment deposit” is a serious warning sign. The SEC specifically warns about fraudsters directing people to buy Bitcoin at an ATM or on a platform and then send it. Do not make an investment decision based on solicitations from someone you know only online, and do not send Bitcoin to an address supplied under pressure.
