To buy Berkshire Hathaway stock, open and fund a brokerage account, search the New York Stock Exchange ticker BRK.A (Class A) or BRK.B (Class B), enter the number of shares or an eligible dollar amount, choose an order type, review the preview and confirm. For most individual investors, BRK.B is the practical class because one share carries 1/1,500 of Class A’s economic and distribution rights at a much lower cash requirement. BRK.A provides substantially more voting power per share and can be converted into 1,500 BRK.B shares. Neither class has received a cash dividend since 1967, according to Berkshire Hathaway’s 2025 Form 10-K.

What you are buying
Berkshire Hathaway has two publicly traded common-stock classes. Berkshire’s 2025 Form 10-K identifies the New York Stock Exchange trading symbols as BRK.A for Class A and BRK.B for Class B. They represent ownership in the same company, but the rights attached to each share are not identical.

Class A (BRK.A)
Class A is the original share class. Each share has the full reference amount of Berkshire’s dividend and distribution rights and the highest voting power of the two classes. One Class A share may be converted into 1,500 Class B shares at the holder’s election. The reverse conversion is not available: Class B cannot be converted into Class A.

Class B (BRK.B)
Class B was created to make Berkshire ownership accessible in smaller increments. Each BRK.B share has one-fifteen-hundredth (1/1,500) of a Class A share’s dividend and distribution rights, and one-ten-thousandth (1/10,000) of its voting rights. The classes generally vote together, but the per-share voting power remains very different.
As of January 31, 2026, Berkshire reported 511,820 Class A shares and 1,389,605,139 Class B shares outstanding. Those counts are historical disclosures, not a live measure of market value or a prediction of returns.

The ratios describe legal rights, not a guarantee that BRK.B will trade at exactly 1/1,500 of BRK.A’s market price. Prices can differ because of supply, demand, liquidity, trading costs and market conditions. Use a current quote rather than an old price or a ratio-based estimate when deciding how much cash to commit.

Which class should you choose?
BRK.B is usually the practical choice
BRK.B generally fits an investor who wants Berkshire exposure without committing the cash required for a single Class A share. It allows whole-share purchases at a smaller dollar size, and some brokerages also permit fractional BRK.B orders. The trade-off is much less voting power per share. For a normal portfolio purchase, the 1/10,000 voting ratio is usually more relevant as a rights disclosure than as a reason to buy BRK.A.
When BRK.A can make sense
BRK.A may be appropriate when an investor specifically values concentrated voting power, already owns Class A, or expects to convert A into B. The conversion feature is one-way. You can turn one Class A share into 1,500 Class B shares, but buying 1,500 Class B shares does not give you a right to receive one Class A share.
Do not select a class based on an assumed return advantage
The stated rights ratios do not establish that one class will produce a better future return. Any choice should account for the current bid-ask spread, order size, broker availability, liquidity, fees and the rights you actually want. A decision to buy BRK.B because it is easier to size is an implementation choice, not a forecast.
Step-by-step: how to buy Berkshire Hathaway stock
1. Select a regulated brokerage
Compare firms using information available in your jurisdiction. Review the relationship summary, regulatory background, commissions and other fees, account minimums, supported order types, fractional-share policy and how securities are held. Confirm that the firm offers access to the New York Stock Exchange and that the account type suits your objective.

- Check whether the broker accepts residents of your country or state.
- Read the fee schedule for commissions, foreign-exchange charges, market-data fees, account transfers and inactivity charges.
- Confirm whether BRK.A and BRK.B are eligible for fractional trading and whether fractional orders can be placed during all market sessions.
- Find out whether fractional positions receive voting rights, how distributions are handled and whether fractional holdings can be transferred to another broker.
2. Open and verify the account
Complete the application with your legal name, address, tax-residency information, identification and employment details as requested. The broker may ask about investment experience and risk tolerance. Read the disclosures before accepting them. Approval and identity checks can take different amounts of time, so do not assume the account is ready until the broker confirms it.
3. Fund the account
Use an available funding method such as a bank transfer or another method offered by the broker. Wait for funds to become available for trading under that firm’s policy. A deposit showing in the account does not always mean every dollar is immediately available for every security or order type.
4. Search the exact ticker
Enter BRK.A for Class A or BRK.B for Class B. Confirm that the result identifies Berkshire Hathaway and the New York Stock Exchange. Do not rely only on a company-name search: similar symbols, market centers or non-U.S. listings can appear in some interfaces.
5. Enter shares or a dollar amount
Choose the correct class, then enter a whole-share quantity. If your broker supports fractional trading for BRK.B, it may also let you enter a dollar amount or a fractional quantity such as 0.25 share. Read the order ticket carefully: some platforms switch between shares and dollars with a separate selector.
Fractional rules differ by firm. Eligible securities, minimum order amounts, order types, execution timing, fees, liquidity, voting rights and transferability can all be different from whole-share trading. A fractional position may be recorded on the broker’s books rather than delivered as a separately transferable share. Obtain the broker’s current terms before relying on a fractional feature.
6. Choose an order type
A market order tells the broker to buy immediately. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describes it as an order that guarantees execution but does not guarantee the execution price. The price can move between submission and the fill, and a large or thinly traded order can receive multiple fills at different prices.
A buy limit order sets the highest price you are willing to pay. The SEC describes a limit order as an order to buy or sell at a specific price or better. It can protect you from paying above your limit, but it may remain unfilled if the market never offers shares at that price. A limit order is not a guarantee that you will buy the stock.

Check the broker’s choices for duration, session eligibility and fractional orders. Do not assume that a limit order or a fractional order behaves exactly like a whole-share order.

Before submitting, verify the ticker, class, share or dollar amount, estimated price, order type, duration, estimated fees and the account being used. Make sure you did not enter BRK.A when you intended BRK.B, or accidentally add a zero to the quantity.
8. Submit once and verify the result
Submit the order and record the confirmation number. Then check whether it is pending, partially filled, filled, canceled or rejected. Review the final fill price and quantity in the account’s activity or order-history screen. If the status is uncertain, do not submit a duplicate order; contact the broker or refresh the order status first. Two orders can both execute if the first one was merely delayed in the interface.
How much money do you need?
The minimum depends on the live market price, the quantity and your broker’s minimum order rules. The available data does not establish current BRK.A or BRK.B prices, spreads or a publication-date quote, so no responsible article can state a current dollar minimum here. Look up the real-time or delayed quote shown by your broker immediately before trading and note its timestamp.
For whole shares, the basic calculation is:
cash required = share quantity × current ask or execution price + applicable fees

Confirm the estimated total on the preview. Never assume that 1,500 BRK.B shares cost exactly the same as one BRK.A share; the legal rights are divided in that ratio, while market prices are set independently.
Dividends and distributions
Berkshire Hathaway’s 2025 Form 10-K states that the company has not declared a cash dividend since 1967. That applies to the company’s stated dividend policy history, not a promise that corporate policy can never change. If Berkshire declares a distribution in the future, the Class B amount per share would reflect its 1/1,500 economic and distribution ratio relative to Class A, subject to the terms of the declaration.

Do not buy either class solely on the expectation of regular dividend income. Consider how you would receive value from an investment whose return may come primarily through changes in share price rather than scheduled cash payments. Tax treatment of price gains, future distributions and fractional holdings depends on your jurisdiction and account type; obtain local advice for a personal decision.
Fractional Berkshire shares: what to check
Availability is broker-specific
There is no universal rule that every broker supports fractional BRK.B, and support for BRK.A should not be assumed. A broker can limit fractional trading to selected securities, account types, trading sessions or dollar amounts. Check the current eligible-security list rather than relying on an old help page or a feature advertised for other stocks.

Fractional orders may be aggregated with other customers’ orders or executed under a broker’s internal process. The broker’s terms should explain how execution price, timing, odd-lot treatment and statements work. Fractional interests may have no or limited voting rights, and transfer to another broker may be unavailable. You may have to sell the fraction before moving the account.
Order types and liquidity may be restricted
Some firms allow only market orders for fractional quantities, while others offer limited order types. A fractional order can also have different liquidity or execution practices from a whole-share order. If you require a specific limit price, confirm that the broker supports limit orders for the exact BRK.B fractional quantity you plan to buy.

Concentration risk
Buying Berkshire is exposure to one company, even though the company owns many businesses and investments. The share price can fall because of company results, investment losses, economic conditions, regulation, market sentiment or other factors. Position size should reflect your overall portfolio and ability to tolerate loss.
Unexpected market-order fills
A market order prioritizes execution over price certainty. In a fast-moving market, the fill can be above the quote you saw when entering the order. If price control matters more than immediate execution, consider a limit order and accept that it may not fill.
Unfilled limit orders
A limit price that is below the available market can remain pending indefinitely or expire under the broker’s duration rules. An unfilled order is not a purchase. Check open orders before placing a replacement.

Ticker and class errors
BRK.A and BRK.B are different securities. A mistaken class selection changes the cash requirement, voting rights and conversion characteristics. Read the order ticket’s security description and exchange before confirming.
Ignoring broker-specific costs
Even when a broker advertises commission-free stock trading, other charges can apply, including regulatory fees, currency conversion, spreads, account services or transfer fees. Fractional transactions can have separate pricing. Use the firm’s current fee schedule.
Assuming rights transfer with a fractional position
Do not assume a fractional BRK.B interest has the same voting, dividend, statement or transfer treatment as a whole share. The broker’s agreement controls the operational details, while Berkshire’s corporate documents define the underlying class rights.

- Have you selected a regulated broker available in your jurisdiction?
- Did you read the current fees, relationship summary and fractional-share terms?
- Are you intentionally choosing BRK.A or BRK.B, rather than accepting a search default?
- Did you check the live quote and timestamp instead of using an old price?
- Is the amount appropriate for a concentrated single-company position?
- Do you understand whether your order is market or limit, and what happens if it does not fill?
- If buying fractionally, did you confirm minimums, execution method, voting rights and transferability?
- After submission, did you verify the final fill instead of relying on the order-entry screen?
What happens after the purchase
Your broker should show the executed quantity, average fill price and transaction date in the account activity. Keep the confirmation and statements for your records. The position may be displayed as whole and fractional components, depending on the platform. Monitor corporate-action notices and account messages rather than assuming that a future conversion, distribution or policy change will be handled automatically in the way you expect.
If you later hold BRK.A and want BRK.B, ask the broker about its conversion process, forms, timing and fees. The corporate right is one BRK.A for 1,500 BRK.B shares, but operational processing is handled through the broker and transfer systems. A BRK.B holder cannot use the conversion feature to obtain BRK.A.
Bottom line for most buyers
Use BRK.B when you want ordinary Berkshire exposure in a position size that does not require the capital of one Class A share, provided your broker supports the order you need. Consider BRK.A only when its higher per-share voting power or one-way conversion feature is an intentional part of your plan. Whichever class you choose, verify the current quote and broker rules, select the order type deliberately, and confirm the completed fill.
