The safest choice is a sealed matcha made in Japan, sold by a traceable European food business, with the complete EU food label visible before you pay. Check the stated origin, named producer or importer, net quantity, best-before date, storage instructions and ingredients. Prefer an intact, opaque pouch or tin with the newest practical date, then store it immediately away from light, heat, oxygen and moisture.
Japanese origin and a recent date are stronger evidence than a bright-green product photograph, thick foam, the words “ceremonial grade” or an unusually low price. Those visual and marketing cues can be affected by lighting, water temperature, whisking and storage and do not establish authenticity.
Why matcha needs a stricter buying check
Matcha is tea ground into a fine powder. Unlike whole-leaf tea, almost the entire leaf is exposed to air, light and humidity as soon as the package is opened. Aroma, color and flavor can therefore decline faster when a product is poorly packed, old or repeatedly exposed to moisture.

Commercial shelf-life specifications vary. JETRO/Japan Pavilion trade examples (2025) include one matcha product stating a shelf life of one year or more and another organic product stating six months or more but less than one year. A longer printed shelf life does not mean the powder will taste equally fresh throughout that period; it means the producer has defined a product-specific date under stated conditions.
There is no authoritative Europe-wide counterfeit-rate statistic established in the available sources. A practical buying method therefore relies on observable evidence: the label, traceability, packaging, dates, seller transparency and the condition of the powder when it arrives.
What an EU online listing must show before checkout
For prepacked food sold in the EU, mandatory information must be accurate, easy to see and understand, not misleading and indelible. The European Commission and the EU’s Your Europe guidance require the relevant particulars to be available for distance sales before the purchase is completed. JETRO’s EU tea guidance explains that Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 covers imported tea and online sales, and that special storage conditions must be declared when needed.
Do not rely on a product photograph if the text is too small to read. Ask the seller for a legible label image or written details before paying.

The European Commission summarizes the requirement this way: “All prepacked food products sold in the EU must clearly display” the required information. The exact particulars can depend on the product and destination, so use the label supplied for the item rather than assuming that every matcha has identical wording.
A step-by-step buying process
1. Start with a seller that identifies itself
Choose a retailer or tea specialist that shows its legal business identity, EU address and a customer-service route. The seller should be able to answer where the matcha was produced, who packed it and how it was imported. A marketplace listing can still be genuine, but verify the actual seller behind the listing rather than treating the marketplace name as the food business operator.

2. Read the complete label before comparing price
Capture the product name, Japanese origin statement, net weight, date, storage directions, ingredients and EU operator or importer address. If any of these are hidden, cropped or supplied only after checkout, treat the listing as lower confidence and request the missing information.

3. Confirm what “Japanese” refers to
“Made in Japan,” “packed in Japan” and “Japanese-style” are not interchangeable descriptions. Look for an explicit origin statement and a named producer, packer or importer. If Uji is claimed, look for wording that connects the product to Uji rather than assuming that a Japanese-looking design proves it.
4. Compare the date with your intended use
For drinking matcha, choose the newest practical best-before date and, when available, recent packing or milling information. If you will use the powder slowly, a smaller sealed pack may preserve quality better than a large tin that remains open for months. The date is not a promise that every cup will taste identical; it is one part of a freshness assessment.
5. Inspect the package construction
Prefer an intact opaque pouch or tin with a reliable seal. Nitrogen-flushed foil or tins reduce oxygen exposure, while transparent or thin packaging permits more light and oxygen exposure, according to Uji Matcha Experts (2026). Do not buy a package that is punctured, wet, swollen, unsealed or visibly damaged.
6. Check certification claims separately
JETRO/Japan Pavilion examples (2025) show products carrying Organic JAS and EU Organic references. Treat a logo as a claim to verify, not as proof of every quality attribute. The listing should identify the certifier or certification documentation applicable to that product. Organic status does not by itself prove freshness, a particular cultivar, a specific region or resistance to counterfeiting.
7. Calculate price per gram
Divide the listed price by the net weight. Compare only products that meet similar checks for origin, packaging, date and intended use. A low price can reflect a smaller quantity, a culinary product, an older date or a promotion; it is not proof of fraud. Conversely, a high price does not authenticate a product.

8. Save the listing and order details
Keep the product page, label image, invoice and delivery date. These records make it easier to resolve a missing date, damaged seal or mismatch between the listing and the package.
How to assess authenticity without relying on color or foam
Origin and producer information
A credible package connects the powder to a Japanese producer, packer or importer. “Uji” can be useful origin information when properly stated, but the word alone is not a guarantee. A seller should be able to explain whether Uji refers to cultivation, processing, packing or a broader regional description.
Traceability through the EU operator
The EU operator or importer gives you an accountable party within the EU food chain. Check that the business name and address are complete and consistent across the listing, package and invoice. An absent or unverifiable operator identity is a more significant warning than an imperfect shade of green.

Fresh matcha is often associated with a vivid green color and a fine texture, but appearance changes with lighting, leaf material, storage and preparation. Water temperature, whisking technique and equipment also affect foam. A bright photograph, abundant foam or a duller-than-expected color cannot establish authenticity on its own.
Marketing language
“Ceremonial grade” is widely used in commerce but is not, by itself, a legal authenticity test. Use it as a description to investigate, not as a substitute for origin, operator details, date and packaging evidence.
Fresh packaging and dates: what to look for
Matcha should arrive in a sealed barrier package that limits light, oxygen and moisture. Opaque foil pouches and tins are preferable to transparent bags. A correctly sealed pack may be nitrogen-flushed; that reduces oxygen exposure but does not remove the need for proper storage after opening.

- Best-before date: Confirm that it is legible and comfortably ahead of your planned use. Follow the producer’s date rather than applying a generic internet shelf-life rule.
- Packing or milling information: When supplied, a recent date helps distinguish a newly packed product from one that has spent a long time in distribution.
- Seal: The closure should be intact, without pinholes, torn foil, water marks or powder leaking from a seam.
- Label consistency: The online description, outer package and invoice should describe the same product, weight and origin.
After opening, reseal the package immediately and follow the producer’s storage instructions. Keep it away from heat, direct light and humidity. A refrigerator can introduce condensation when a cold package is opened in warm air, so use refrigeration only if the producer’s instructions support it and the package can be protected from moisture.
How to tell whether delivered matcha is stale, damaged or unsafe
Signs that justify rejecting the delivery
- Visible mold or unusual growth.
- A strong musty or sour odor.
- Damp, hardened clumps that indicate moisture intrusion.
- Punctured, water-damaged or unsealed packaging.
Uji Matcha Experts (2026) advises discarding powder with these signs. Do not taste a product that appears moldy or contaminated. Photograph the package, seal, label and delivery carton, then contact the seller for a refund or replacement.
Signs of age that are not proof of counterfeiting
A duller color, weaker aroma or less foam can indicate age or poor storage, but none proves that the powder is counterfeit. Compare the delivered item with the stated date and storage conditions. If the package is intact and the product is within date but sensory quality is disappointing, ask the seller how it was stored and whether a replacement from a newer batch is available.
When the package and listing disagree
Stop using the product until the discrepancy is resolved if the package says a different origin, weight, ingredient list, operator or date from the listing. Send the seller the saved listing and package photographs. A legitimate operator should be able to explain a listing error or arrange a remedy.

If two products meet the same standards, favor the one with the more recent packing or milling information and the shorter delivery chain. If a comparison value is not stated by either seller, treat it as unknown rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
Buying from outside the EU and importing tea
EU food-information rules apply to imported tea offered on the EU market, including online sales. JETRO import guidance also describes food-import notifications and the possibility of documentation or testing for tea entering a market. The exact process depends on the destination country, the route of import and the product’s documentation.

When ordering directly from outside the EU, check the destination country’s customs, food-import and pesticide-residue requirements before payment. A parcel can be genuine yet delayed, assessed for taxes or refused because the importer has not supplied required documentation. Buying from an EU-established seller generally makes the operator information and consumer remedy easier to verify, but it does not remove the need to inspect the product on arrival.
A practical storage routine after delivery
- Inspect the outer carton and inner package before opening. Photograph any damage.
- Read the producer’s storage directions and note the best-before date.
- Store the unopened package in a cool, dry, dark place.
- After opening, remove only the amount you need and reseal the package immediately.
- Keep utensils completely dry; even small amounts of water can create clumps and accelerate deterioration.

Does “Uji” on the label guarantee authentic matcha?
No. Uji can be meaningful origin information, but the claim should be accompanied by clear provenance, a named producer or packer and an accountable EU operator. The word alone does not prove where the leaves were grown, processed or packed.
Is very bright green powder proof that matcha is real?
No. Lighting, storage, leaf material and preparation affect color. Use the label, traceability and package condition as your primary checks.
Is foam a reliable authenticity test?
