To buy American Express stock, open and fund a regulated brokerage account available where you live, search for the New York Stock Exchange ticker AXP, choose a market or limit order, and confirm the broker’s total charges before submitting it. The purchase decision is separate from the investment decision: AXP’s 2025 results show a large payments and card franchise, but its earnings and dividend remain exposed to credit losses, consumer spending, interest rates, regulation, and execution.
This guide explains the buying process, the fees that can change your return, a disciplined way to value AXP, and how to assess the dividend without treating any payment as guaranteed. American Express common stock trades principally on the NYSE under ticker AXP.
What American Express stock represents
American Express operates a card, payments, lending, and merchant-services network. Its economics differ from those of a pure payment network because it also carries credit exposure through consumer and commercial lending and funds parts of its business. That combination can produce strong returns in healthy spending and credit conditions, while making downturns more consequential.
The company’s Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025, filed with the SEC on February 6, 2026, reported $227.2 billion in worldwide processed volume and 66.2 million third-party cards-in-force. It reported $10.8 billion of 2025 net income. Those figures describe the latest completed year in the cited filing; they are not a forecast of future performance.
#1 Best Overall
American Express said in its January 30, 2026, fourth-quarter and full-year results release that it expected 9% to 10% revenue growth in 2026 and $17.30 to $17.90 in 2026 earnings per share. Guidance can change as spending, credit losses, funding costs, and regulation change, so use it as a scenario range rather than a promise.
What you need before placing an AXP order
A brokerage account available in your jurisdiction
Use a broker that is regulated for your country or region and offers access to U.S. exchange-listed shares. Confirm which legal entity holds the account, what investor-protection regime applies, and whether the account supports NYSE trading. Residents outside the United States should also check local rules for U.S. securities, currency conversion, withholding taxes, estate-tax exposure, and required tax forms.
Money for the purchase and for fees
Fund the account with cash that is not needed for near-term expenses. A broker may require cleared funds before an order can be accepted. Keep an additional amount available for commissions, foreign-exchange conversion, transfer charges, or other account costs. Do not assume a zero-commission headline means the transaction is free; the spread and currency conversion can be more important than an explicit commission.

Your order decision
A market order prioritizes execution but does not guarantee the price. A limit order specifies the highest price you will pay for a buy and may remain unfilled if the market does not reach that price. Read the broker’s order disclosures, including how it handles partial fills, trading outside regular hours, and order expiration.

Step-by-step: buying AXP shares
- Select and verify the broker. Check its regulatory status, U.S. market access, supported account type, currency options, investor-protection coverage, and current fee schedule.
- Review the complete cost before funding. Look for commissions, bid-ask spread, foreign-exchange markup, custody charges, transfer fees, inactivity fees, account subscription charges, and any fee for receiving dividends.
- Open the account and complete identity checks. Enter your legal name, address, tax residence, and other information the broker requires. Non-U.S. investors may need to complete a U.S. tax form through the broker.
- Deposit funds and wait for availability. Confirm whether the broker distinguishes between deposited cash and cash available for trading. Check the currency in which the order will settle.
- Search for AXP. Verify that the instrument is American Express common stock on the NYSE, not a similarly named security, derivative, depositary receipt, or leveraged product.
- Choose quantity and order type. Enter the number of whole or fractional shares if the broker supports fractional trading. Select a market order for execution priority or a limit order for price control, then review the broker’s warnings.
- Check the order preview. Confirm the share count, limit price if used, estimated trade value, commission, currency conversion, exchange or regulatory charges, and the order’s duration.
- Submit and verify execution. After submission, check whether the order filled, partially filled, expired, or was rejected. Save the trade confirmation and note the execution price and time.
- Review settlement and records. Confirm the settled position, cash balance, ownership statement, and tax documents. Record your cost basis, including fees where local rules require them.
Fees that can change your investment return
Exact current fee amounts were not established in the cited company filings or investor-relations material, so obtain the broker’s schedule immediately before trading. The following categories are the ones to compare.
| Cost category | What to check | Why it matters for AXP |
|---|---|---|
| Trading commission | Per-order, per-share, or subscription-based charge; whether it applies to NYSE shares | A fixed charge has a larger percentage impact on a small purchase. |
| Bid-ask spread | Displayed difference between the best buy and sell prices; how the broker routes orders | You can lose value at entry and exit even when the stated commission is zero. |
| Foreign-exchange conversion | Rate used to convert your currency into U.S. dollars and back; separate markup or spread | Currency costs affect both the purchase and eventual sale or dividend conversion. |
| Custody or account fee | Recurring charge for holding U.S. shares, statements, or account administration | A recurring fee reduces the return on a long-term holding. |
| Transfer and withdrawal fee | Cost to move cash or securities to another institution | Important if you later consolidate accounts or change brokers. |
| Inactivity or minimum-balance fee | Conditions that trigger a charge when you trade infrequently or hold a small balance | Can matter when AXP is a buy-and-hold position. |
| Fractional-share terms | Eligibility, spread, voting rights, dividend treatment, and ability to transfer fractions | Fractions may help size a position but can have different legal and transfer treatment. |
| Investor protection | Applicable compensation or insurance scheme, limits, and exclusions | Protection rules depend on the broker’s legal entity and your residence; they do not protect you from AXP’s share-price decline. |
Compare execution-quality disclosures as well as advertised prices. A broker that publishes routing and execution information gives you more evidence about how orders are handled, but past execution quality does not guarantee future results.
How to evaluate AXP’s valuation
Use one valuation date
Price-based ratios change whenever the share price moves, while earnings and book values update when the company reports. Use the same as-of date for the share price, trailing or forward earnings, book value, and peer data. The available company information does not provide a quote timestamped to October 19, 2026, so refresh the current AXP price before calculating a multiple or yield and label the time and market session.

Start with earnings and revenue quality
Compare the current price with trailing earnings and with a forward estimate, but identify which earnings definition you use. The 2025 net income of $10.8 billion is a completed-year figure. The 2026 EPS guidance of $17.30 to $17.90 is management’s range, not reported earnings. Examine whether revenue growth comes from spending volume, net interest income, fee growth, new cards, or acquisitions, and whether expenses and credit provisions are rising faster than revenue.
Use the right balance-sheet measures
For a financial company, price-to-book and price-to-tangible-book can add information that a simple P/E misses. Book value includes all shareholders’ equity; tangible book generally removes goodwill and certain intangible assets. Use the company’s stated definitions or reconcile the calculation yourself, because different analysts can produce different ratios.
| Metric | Basic calculation | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Price-to-earnings | Share price divided by earnings per share | Are earnings normal, or temporarily boosted or depressed by credit provisions, tax items, or other factors? |
| Price-to-book | Share price divided by book value per share | Is the premium supported by sustainable returns on equity and asset quality? |
| Price-to-tangible-book | Share price divided by tangible book value per share | How much of the valuation depends on goodwill and other intangible assets? |
| Return on equity | Net income divided by average shareholders’ equity | Is the return high because of durable profitability or because leverage and buybacks reduced the equity base? |
| Return on assets | Net income divided by average assets | How efficiently does the business convert its asset base into profit? |
| Dividend payout | Common dividends divided by earnings or free cash flow, using a consistent definition | Can the payout remain affordable if earnings fall or credit losses rise? |
Compare only like with like
Choose peers with a similar business model and use the same accounting period and metric definitions. Payment networks usually have different credit exposure and capital needs from card issuers. Consumer-finance companies can have different funding, provisioning, and regulatory structures. A lower P/E at a more credit-sensitive company is not automatically cheaper on a risk-adjusted basis.
Account for capital returns
American Express reported that it returned $7.6 billion to common shareholders in 2025: $5.3 billion through share repurchases and $2.3 billion through common dividends. Buybacks can increase earnings per share when shares are repurchased below intrinsic value, but they can destroy value when the company buys at an excessive price. Assess the repurchase pace alongside capital ratios, credit trends, and the valuation at which shares are retired.

What the latest results imply for an AXP analysis
The 2025 figures establish a useful baseline: $227.2 billion of worldwide processed volume, 66.2 million third-party cards-in-force, and $10.8 billion of net income. The 2026 outlook calls for 9% to 10% revenue growth and $17.30 to $17.90 EPS. To test whether the share price is reasonable, build at least three cases:
Rank #4
- Base case: revenue and EPS develop near the guidance range, credit losses remain manageable, and capital returns continue within regulatory limits.
- Downside case: weaker spending, higher unemployment, larger credit provisions, or more expensive funding reduce earnings and limit buybacks or dividend growth.
- Upside case: spending growth, premium-card acquisition, fee income, and operating leverage exceed expectations without a comparable rise in losses or capital requirements.
Apply the current share price to each EPS case rather than treating one target multiple as certain. A high-quality franchise can still be a poor purchase at an excessive price, while a lower multiple can reflect genuine credit or regulatory risk.
How to evaluate the American Express dividend
Use the latest declared dividend and dates
The 2025 filing said the regular quarterly dividend was planned to increase from $0.82 to $0.95 per share. American Express investor-relations stock information lists 2026 quarterly entries at $0.95. Treat the amount as the latest reported quarterly level only after checking the newest declaration. Confirm the ex-dividend date, record date, and payment date in the company’s current dividend table; owning the stock on the wrong side of the ex-dividend date can mean missing that payment.
Calculate a forward yield correctly
Forward dividend yield equals the annualized dividend divided by the contemporaneous share price. If four quarterly payments are each $0.95, the annualized amount is $3.80 per share, but that calculation assumes the quarterly rate remains unchanged. Divide $3.80 by the refreshed AXP price and state the quote’s timestamp. Yield moves inversely with price, and neither the share price nor future payments is guaranteed.
Test payout capacity
Do not judge safety from yield alone. Compare dividends with earnings, credit-loss provisions, capital requirements, liquidity, and planned repurchases. A company can report rising earnings while retaining less capital because lending growth or regulatory requirements consume cash. Conversely, a temporary increase in provisions can depress one year’s payout ratio without proving that the long-term dividend is unsafe.
Best Value
Separate dividend growth from dividend certainty
The move from $0.82 to $0.95 indicates an intended increase in the regular quarterly rate, and the 2026 investor-relations entries show $0.95 payments. Future increases require a new declaration. The board can change, suspend, or reduce a dividend if earnings, capital, funding, or regulatory conditions warrant it.

American Express identifies material risk areas in its latest Form 10-K. Consider each one before relying on a valuation or income thesis:
- Consumer and commercial credit losses: Delinquencies and defaults can increase provisions, reduce earnings, and weaken the value of receivables.
- Economic and spending conditions: A recession or lower consumer and business spending can reduce transaction volume, fee revenue, and interest income.
- Interest rates and funding: Rate changes affect borrowing costs, net interest income, customer behavior, and the value of financial assets.
- Regulation and capital requirements: New rules can alter interchange economics, underwriting, disclosures, required capital, or the amount available for buybacks and dividends.
- Competition: Banks, payment networks, fintech companies, and other card issuers compete for customers, merchants, spending volume, and rewards economics.
- Cybersecurity and operational resilience: A disruption, data incident, fraud event, or technology failure can create costs, regulatory exposure, and reputational damage.
- Execution: Product launches, marketing, technology investment, international operations, and strategic changes may not deliver the expected returns.
These are business risks, not reasons that a loss must occur. They are the variables to stress-test when deciding how much of a portfolio, if any, should be exposed to AXP.

Your tax treatment depends on residence, account type, holding period, and the broker’s legal entity. U.S. dividends paid to non-U.S. investors may be subject to withholding, while local rules can require reporting of dividends, capital gains, and foreign assets. A broker may issue tax forms or statements, but you remain responsible for filing accurately. Keep trade confirmations, dividend records, currency-conversion rates, and cost-basis information.
Do not confuse tax treatment with investment quality. A tax-advantaged account can defer or reduce tax in some jurisdictions, but it does not eliminate AXP’s operating, credit, market, or dividend risks.
A practical AXP purchase checklist
- Confirm the security is American Express common stock, ticker AXP, listed on the NYSE.
- Verify that your broker is regulated and authorized to serve your jurisdiction.
- Read the current commission, spread, foreign-exchange, custody, transfer, inactivity, and account-fee disclosures.
- Decide whether a market order’s execution priority or a limit order’s price control fits your situation.
- Refresh the share price and record the quote time before calculating P/E, price-to-book, or dividend yield.
- Use the same date, accounting period, and definitions for every peer comparison.
- Check the newest dividend declaration and ex-dividend, record, and payment dates.
- Stress-test earnings, credit losses, capital requirements, and shareholder returns rather than relying on a single forecast.
- Save the confirmation and monitor the position against the assumptions that justified buying it.
How to monitor the investment after purchase
Review quarterly results and updated filings for processed volume, cards-in-force, revenue mix, net income, provisions for credit losses, capital ratios, and the pace of repurchases. Compare actual results with the 2026 guidance range and revise your valuation when the company changes its outlook. Check dividend declarations rather than assuming the last quarterly amount will continue.
Also monitor your own position size. Even a company with a strong franchise can become an outsized risk if its share price rises sharply or other holdings decline. Rebalancing decisions should follow your allocation plan and tax situation, not a desire to predict every short-term move in AXP.
