Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo buy ADA safely, choose an exchange available in your country, compare its full purchase and withdrawal costs, and confirm that it supports withdrawals over the Cardano network. Then decide whether to keep ADA in the exchange account or move it to a wallet you control. For a wallet transfer, verify the receiving address and network, review the fee, and protect your recovery phrase offline.
What you are buying
ADA is Cardano’s native digital token. Cardano is the network; ADA is the asset you buy and can also use to pay Cardano transaction fees. Most people buy their first ADA through an exchange, according to Cardano’s getting-started guide.
Choose an exchange available where you live
Exchange availability, identity checks, payment methods, and charges vary by country and provider. Since no country is specified, there is no responsible way to name a universally suitable exchange or quote a current provider fee. Check the exchange’s official terms and fee pages for your location before depositing money.
Compare these items before you buy:
- Eligibility: Is the service available to residents of your country, and what identity verification does it require?
- Funding method: Check whether a bank transfer, card, or other method is accepted, and whether it carries a deposit or payment charge.
- Total purchase cost: Review the quoted trading fee or purchase charge and the buy/sell spread, not just a headline fee.
- Withdrawal terms: Confirm that ADA can be withdrawn over Cardano, and check the withdrawal charge, processing time, and limits.
- Account protections: Review available login and withdrawal security controls.
Buying ADA on an exchange does not necessarily mean you can immediately send it to a wallet. Check Cardano-network withdrawal support before purchasing if self-custody is part of your plan.

Understand exchange custody versus a wallet you control
When ADA stays in a custodial exchange account, the provider controls the associated keys and processes withdrawals. You rely on that provider to give you access to the account and handle transactions. Cardano recommends avoiding keeping cryptocurrency on an exchange longer than necessary and using a wallet instead; its ADA explainer describes that guidance.
With a self-custody wallet, you control the keys, but you also take responsibility for protecting the recovery phrase and operating the wallet correctly. Losing access to the keys or recovery phrase can mean losing access to the funds. The choice is a trade-off: exchange custody leaves key management to a provider, while self-custody gives you direct control and direct responsibility.

Choose and set up a Cardano-compatible wallet
Cardano wallets are available in software forms, including desktop and mobile apps, and as hardware devices. Features differ, so verify the wallet’s current ADA support, recovery method, platform compatibility, and any features you need, such as delegation, before transferring funds. Cardano’s wallet guidance describes the available forms and notes that larger holdings may justify considering a hardware wallet, with Ledger, Trezor, and Keystone among its examples. Those examples are not a model-by-model endorsement; check current compatibility and setup requirements for the exact device.
Use the wallet maker’s official website or verified app listing to get its software and setup instructions. A hardware wallet is optional, not a requirement for buying ADA, and it does not remove the need to secure the recovery phrase.

Keep the recovery phrase private
The recovery phrase can restore wallet access. Anyone who has it may be able to take the funds. Cardano’s wallet guide warns: “Anyone with these words can restore your wallet on any device and take your funds.” It also states: “No legitimate person or support team will ever ask for your recovery phrase.”
- Write the phrase down and keep it offline in a secure place.
- Do not enter it into a website, send it to anyone, or store it in a photo or cloud note.
- Share only your receiving address with someone who needs to send you ADA. The address is not the recovery phrase.
Transfer ADA from an exchange to your wallet
- Get a receiving address: Open your wallet, choose its receive function, and copy the Cardano address it displays. Use the wallet’s own instructions if the labels differ.
- Check the destination and network: At the exchange, choose an ADA withdrawal and confirm that the selected network is Cardano. Compare the address carefully before submitting. Cardano developer guidance recommends checking network identity to help avoid sending mainnet funds to a testnet address; see the network guidance.
- Consider a small test transfer: If appropriate, send a small amount first and confirm it arrives at the intended wallet before sending the remainder. A test transfer is a cautious step, not a substitute for checking the address and network on every transaction.
- Review the exchange confirmation: Check the destination address, network, amount, withdrawal charge, and any limits or processing details before confirming.
- Verify receipt: Confirm the ADA appears in the intended wallet before proceeding with any additional transfer.
Know which fees apply
There can be several separate costs. Keep them distinct when comparing the total cost of buying and moving ADA:

- Funding or deposit charge: A cost associated with adding money to an exchange, if the provider or payment method charges one.
- Purchase cost: The trading fee or purchase charge, plus any spread between quoted buying and selling prices.
- Exchange withdrawal charge: A provider-set cost for withdrawing ADA. It is separate from the Cardano network fee; check the exchange’s current schedule for your location.
- Cardano network fee: The protocol fee for the transaction on Cardano.
Cardano’s minimum transaction fee is calculated using the formula a × transaction size in bytes + b, where a and b are protocol parameters that can change through the protocol’s update system. The fee is therefore not one permanently fixed amount; the Cardano Developer Portal fee guidance gives a typical simple-transfer estimate of 0.17–0.20 ADA. Treat that as a rough published estimate, not a guaranteed current quote. Check the fee shown by your wallet when preparing a transaction.
The available fee information does not establish current charges for a particular exchange, country, card, or bank method. Use the provider’s current fee schedule for those costs rather than treating an exchange withdrawal charge as the Cardano protocol fee.

Review before signing a wallet transaction
A wallet may ask you to sign a transaction to authorize it. Before signing, review the transaction details, including the destination, amount, and displayed fee. Cardano’s wallet guidance advises users to review each signing request.
