You can buy a 10-year U.S. Treasury note in a new-issue auction through TreasuryDirect with a noncompetitive bid, through a bank or broker with either bid type, or in the secondary market after issuance. The note pays fixed interest every six months and returns its principal at maturity, but its market value can fall before then, inflation can erode its purchasing power, and a TreasuryDirect purchase is generally subject to a 45-calendar-day holding restriction before transfer or sale.

What a 10-year Treasury note is

A Treasury note is a marketable U.S. government security issued with a fixed term of 2, 3, 5, 7, or 10 years. A 10-year note makes 20 semiannual interest payments over its full term, followed by repayment of its principal at maturity. The coupon rate is fixed when the note is auctioned; the dollar interest payment is based on the note’s face value, not on whatever its market price later becomes.

Treasury securities are obligations of the U.S. government and are described by Treasury as backed by its full faith and credit. That describes the issuer’s commitment to make scheduled interest and principal payments. It does not mean the investment has no risk: a note’s resale price can move, inflation can reduce the real value of its payments, and future interest payments may be reinvested at unknown rates.

What you receive as the owner

  • Scheduled interest: The fixed coupon produces two interest payments each year while you hold the note.
  • Principal at maturity: The face value is due when the note matures, assuming you hold it through maturity.
  • Marketability: A note can generally be sold in the secondary market, subject to the platform’s operational rules and the price available at that time.

Treasury’s current overview lists a $100 minimum purchase and purchases in $100 increments. It also lists a $10 million maximum for a noncompetitive bid. Auction terms and platform limits can change, so confirm the live offering announcement before submitting an order.

Choose how you will buy

Route Bid or transaction type How the price is set What to watch
TreasuryDirect Noncompetitive auction bid You accept the auction-determined yield and price. Most newly purchased marketable securities must be held for 45 calendar days before transfer or sale.
Bank, broker, or dealer Noncompetitive auction bid You accept the auction result; the institution submits the order. Check account eligibility, fees, cutoff times, and whether the provider supports the specific auction.
Bank, broker, or dealer Competitive auction bid You specify the yield you are willing to accept. Your order may be filled in full, partially filled, or rejected.
Secondary market Buy an already-issued note You pay the prevailing market price, which may be above or below face value. Compare the quoted yield, price, accrued interest, spread, and any transaction charges.

TreasuryDirect is the U.S. Treasury’s official application for buying and holding marketable Treasury securities. A bank, broker, or dealer may be more convenient if you already use an investment account or want access to the secondary market, but the provider’s own rules and costs apply.

How to buy a new 10-year note at auction

1. Decide whether a new issue or reopening fits your plan

Original 10-year notes are generally auctioned in February, May, August, and November. Treasury also schedules reopenings. Use the current Treasury auction calendar and the specific offering announcement for the exact auction date, settlement details, coupon, CUSIP, and terms.

A reopening is an additional sale of an existing note. It keeps the original note’s CUSIP, maturity date, and coupon payment dates, but has a later issue date and usually a different price. Because the maturity date is unchanged, a reopening has a shorter remaining term than the original issue. Accrued interest can be included in the amount paid for a reopening and then returned as part of the first regular interest payment.

2. Select a purchase channel

Use TreasuryDirect if you want to place a noncompetitive bid directly with the Treasury. Use a bank, broker, or dealer if you need to submit a competitive bid or prefer to hold the security in an existing investment account. For a note already issued, ask a provider that offers Treasury secondary-market trading for a current quote.

3. Check the offering terms and your order amount

Confirm the security’s maturity date, whether it is an original issue or reopening, auction and settlement dates, minimum purchase, increments, bid limits, and payment instructions. The Treasury overview lists $100 as the minimum and $100 increments. The listed noncompetitive maximum is $10 million, but the offering announcement controls for the particular sale.

4. Submit a noncompetitive bid

  1. Choose the 10-year note or reopening in the auction schedule shown by your purchase channel.
  2. Enter the face amount in the permitted increment.
  3. Accept the auction-determined yield and price rather than entering your own yield.
  4. Review the payment amount, settlement information, and account funding instructions before confirming.

A noncompetitive bid is designed to receive the requested amount, within the applicable auction limit, at the yield set by the auction. You do not control the final yield, but you avoid the risk that your stated yield is too low to receive an allocation.

5. Submit a competitive bid only if you understand allocation risk

  1. Use a bank, broker, or dealer that accepts competitive Treasury bids.
  2. Enter the face amount and the yield you are willing to accept, following the provider’s quoting convention.
  3. Review the auction cutoff and the provider’s deadline, which can be earlier than the Treasury auction deadline.
  4. Wait for the auction result; the order can be filled fully, filled partially, or rejected.

A competitive bid does not guarantee an allocation. If the yield you specify is not competitive with the auction result, you may receive none of the requested note. If it is accepted but the auction has limited supply at that level, you may receive only part of the order.

6. Review the result and settlement

After the auction, check the allocated face amount, price, yield, settlement date, and the cash taken from your account. For a reopening, verify whether accrued interest is included. The first regular interest payment can include the accrued-interest amount paid at purchase, so the first cash flow may differ from later semiannual payments.

How to buy a 10-year note in the secondary market

Secondary-market trading lets you buy a note after its original auction or sell one you already own. The price is set by current market conditions rather than by your original auction. A note trading above its $100 face value is at a premium; one trading below face value is at a discount.

  1. Ask your bank, broker, or dealer for the exact note, including its CUSIP and maturity date.
  2. Confirm whether the quote is for a new issue, a reopening, or an already-issued note.
  3. Review the clean price, accrued interest, total dollar amount, yield to maturity, and any markup, commission, or other charge disclosed by the provider.
  4. Compare the remaining term and cash-flow dates with your intended holding period.
  5. Place the order only after confirming how the security will be held and how it can later be sold.

The secondary-market price can be different from face value even though the coupon payment is unchanged. Buying at a premium generally lowers the yield to maturity relative to the coupon; buying at a discount generally raises it. The relevant return measure is the yield based on the price you pay and the remaining cash flows, not the coupon by itself.

Coupon rate, price, and yield: the distinction that matters

The coupon rate is the fixed annual interest rate applied to the note’s face value. A $10,000 face-value note with a hypothetical 4% coupon would pay $400 per year, normally as two $200 payments. That example explains the mechanics only; it is not a current auction quote.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The price is what you pay for the note. At auction, Treasury determines the price and yield through competitive bidding. In the secondary market, the price changes as investors’ required yields change.

The yield to maturity expresses the return implied by the purchase price, coupon payments, time remaining, and principal repayment, assuming the note is held to maturity and payments are made as scheduled. Treasury explains the relationship this way: when a note’s yield to maturity is higher than its coupon rate, its price is below par; when the yield is lower than the coupon rate, its price is above par.

Market condition Typical price relationship Meaning for a buyer
Required market yield rises above the coupon Price tends to fall below face value A lower price compensates the buyer for receiving a coupon below current market yields.
Required market yield falls below the coupon Price tends to rise above face value A higher price offsets the unusually attractive fixed coupon.
You hold through maturity Interim price changes still occur You receive scheduled coupons and principal, but the quoted market value may fluctuate along the way.

For an auction purchase, do not assume the coupon equals the yield. Treasury sets the coupon for the security, while the auction sets the price and resulting yield. For a reopening, the coupon remains the same as the original note, but the later issue price can produce a different yield.

What happens if you sell before maturity?

You receive the market price available when you sell, plus or minus any accrued interest handled in the transaction. That price can be less than what you paid or less than the note’s face value. The principal repayment at maturity protects the scheduled face-value payment only if you continue holding the note until maturity; it does not establish a guaranteed resale price before then.

Interest rates are the main driver of this movement. When market yields rise, existing fixed-coupon notes generally become less attractive, so their prices tend to fall. When market yields fall, their prices generally rise. The longer the remaining term, the more sensitive a fixed-coupon security can be to changes in required yields; a 10-year note therefore deserves a longer-horizon decision than a short-term Treasury bill.

TreasuryDirect adds an operational constraint: a newly purchased marketable security generally must be held for at least 45 calendar days before it can be transferred or sold. This restriction does not apply to purchases made with proceeds from reinvesting a maturing security. The restriction is separate from market risk: after the holding period, a sale can still produce a gain or loss based on the then-current price.

The main risks of a 10-year Treasury note

Interest-rate and market-price risk

A fixed coupon does not fix the note’s market value. If rates rise after you buy, a buyer in the secondary market may demand a lower price. Selling before maturity can therefore return less than your purchase amount, even though the issuer remains scheduled to pay the note’s principal at maturity.

Inflation risk

Coupons and principal on a conventional note are nominal dollars. If consumer prices rise faster than expected, those future dollars buy less. A note can make every scheduled payment and still deliver a disappointing inflation-adjusted result.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reinvestment risk

The note pays interest every six months rather than compounding at the original coupon automatically. If you plan to reinvest each payment, the rate available at that future date is unknown today. The eventual return on reinvested coupons can therefore be higher or lower than the note’s stated coupon.

Liquidity and access constraints

Treasury securities are marketable, but access to cash is not identical across purchase methods. A direct TreasuryDirect purchase is generally subject to the 45-calendar-day transfer-or-sale restriction described above. A secondary-market sale after that period still depends on an available market price and the provider’s process. Do not use money for a near-term bill if you may need to sell at an inconvenient time.

Competitive-auction allocation risk

A competitive bidder chooses an acceptable yield, but the auction determines whether that yield is accepted. The result can be a full allocation, a partial allocation, or no allocation. A noncompetitive bid avoids that yield-selection risk, although it leaves the final yield and price to the auction.

Tax treatment

Treasury’s note overview says interest is subject to federal income tax each year and exempt from state and local income taxes. The exemption does not make the interest tax-free, and tax treatment can depend on your circumstances and jurisdiction. Use the issuer’s current tax guidance and consult a qualified tax professional for an individual determination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Credit and payment risk in context

Treasury describes its securities as backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government and says scheduled interest and principal payments are guaranteed to be paid on time. That issuer backing is different from a guarantee that the market price will remain constant, inflation will stay low, or you will be able to sell immediately at face value.

Conventional Treasury note or 10-year TIPS?

Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) are the main Treasury alternative for an investor whose priority is protection against changes in inflation. TIPS principal adjusts with inflation or deflation, and the interest amount can change because it is calculated on the adjusted principal. A conventional 10-year note keeps a fixed nominal principal and fixed coupon dollars.

Feature Conventional 10-year note 10-year TIPS
Principal Fixed nominal amount due at maturity. Adjusts with inflation or deflation over the term.
Interest dollars Normally constant because the coupon is applied to fixed face value. Can rise or fall as adjusted principal changes.
Quoted return Nominal price and yield. Inflation-linked terms plus a market price and real yield.
Inflation exposure Inflation can reduce purchasing power. Principal adjustment is designed to address inflation, but deflation can reduce adjusted principal and market prices can still move.
Early sale Price can be above or below your purchase price as yields change. Also subject to market-price changes and interest-rate risk.

TIPS do not eliminate investment risk. Their principal can adjust down as well as up over the term, and a sale before maturity can produce a market loss. Compare the current auction or market price, yield, expected holding period, and need for inflation protection rather than choosing solely by the security’s name.

How to decide whether a 10-year note fits

Match the maturity to your cash need

Start with the date on which you expect to need the money. If that date is uncertain or materially earlier than the note’s maturity, account for both the 45-day TreasuryDirect restriction and the possibility that market prices will be unfavorable when you sell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose certainty deliberately

A noncompetitive bid gives certainty about receiving the requested amount within the applicable limit, but not about the final yield. A competitive bid gives you control over the minimum acceptable yield, but not over whether the order is filled. A secondary-market purchase gives you a visible price and yield at the time of the trade, but that price may include a premium, discount, accrued interest, and provider charges.

Separate nominal income from real income

If your spending goal is measured in today’s purchasing power, evaluate inflation risk alongside the coupon. If your priority is a known nominal payment schedule and you can hold to maturity, a conventional note’s fixed coupon and principal may be easier to plan around.

Fraud and channel-safety checks

Use the official TreasuryDirect application or a recognized bank, broker, or dealer. The Treasury Office of Inspector General warns that Treasury does not issue marketable securities through private placements or license financial entities or individuals to act as intermediaries selling them. Be skeptical of anyone offering a “special” private Treasury allocation, guaranteed outsize returns, or a request to send money outside a normal regulated account-opening and settlement process.

  • Confirm that the security is a Treasury note and identify its maturity date and CUSIP.
  • Verify the auction or market price, yield, settlement date, and total cash required.
  • Read the provider’s fee and markup disclosure before submitting a secondary-market order.
  • Do not treat a marketing claim of “government-backed” as a promise that the resale price cannot fall.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Have you identified the exact 10-year issue or reopening and its maturity date?
  • Are you buying at auction or in the secondary market?
  • If at auction, are you intentionally choosing a noncompetitive or competitive bid?
  • Does your amount meet the $100 minimum and $100 increment listed by Treasury?
  • Can you leave the money invested through the 45-calendar-day TreasuryDirect restriction if that route applies?
  • Have you distinguished the coupon from the yield to maturity?
  • Could you tolerate a lower sale price if you need cash before maturity?
  • Have you considered inflation and whether TIPS better match your spending risk?
  • Have you checked federal, state, and local tax implications for your situation?
  • Are the provider, account, settlement instructions, and security identity authentic?

Bottom line

A 10-year Treasury note is straightforward to buy but not risk-free to own. TreasuryDirect or a bank, broker, or dealer can submit a noncompetitive auction order; a bank, broker, or dealer can also submit a competitive order; and an already-issued note can be purchased in the secondary market. The note’s fixed coupon produces 20 semiannual payments over ten years and principal at maturity, while price, inflation, reinvestment, liquidity, allocation, and tax considerations determine whether that schedule fits your circumstances. Use the current auction announcement or market quote, and make the holding period—not just the advertised coupon—the center of the decision.
