Start with four upgrades to Max Stamina, add Max Health until you can survive a mistake, then specialize around one weapon and combat loop. That opening gives a new player enough stamina to attack and dodge, a survivability buffer for learning enemy patterns, and a clear direction without locking the character into a class. Valor Mortis lets you experiment with weapon upgrade trees and switch among abilities you have unlocked.

What your first build needs to accomplish

Your opening character is not a permanent class selection. It is a resource and timing foundation that should make the first areas easier to learn. Every early decision answers one of four questions:

  • Can you attack and still afford an emergency dodge?
  • Can you survive a combo when your timing is late?
  • Are you building around weapon hits, parries, blocks, firearms or mutations?
  • Does your equipment support the way you actually play rather than an idealized damage plan?

The most reliable starting sequence is Max Stamina first, Max Health second, then one focused second-row path. A melee player can delay Ectoplasm investment, while a mutation-heavy character should add both Ectoplasm Capacity and Ectoplasm Drain. Weapon upgrades then define the rhythm of combat more than a traditional class screen would.

How Catalysts shape the first 25 levels

Spend your early Catalysts in an order that protects your ability to make decisions during a fight. The first four points are especially important because they establish the stamina reserve used by both attacks and dodges.

8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

1. Put the first four Catalysts into Max Stamina

The early build guidance recommends four Max Stamina upgrades. This investment unlocks the second upgrade row and makes the stamina bar large enough to support an attack sequence without removing every defensive option. Treat stamina as an emergency resource, not a bar that must be emptied whenever an enemy is in range.

A useful rule is to finish an offensive exchange with enough stamina for at least one dodge. If a heavy swing, firearm action or mutation leaves the bar empty, you have voluntarily removed your answer to the next attack. The exact amount you need depends on your weapon and timing, but preserving one dodge is a safer default than maximizing immediate output.

2. Add Max Health when mistakes are still killing you

After the stamina foundation, invest in Max Health. Health does not replace learning enemy patterns, but it gives you room to survive a late parry, a missed dodge or a second hit in a sequence while you learn. Raise it earlier than planned if a recurring enemy combo kills you before you can react; that is evidence that your current margin for error is too small.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Health is particularly valuable for a first character because you are still discovering attack ranges and recovery windows. It also complements Block: a defensive player can absorb the occasional imperfect exchange instead of restarting every time a group closes in.

3. Use Ectoplasm Capacity according to your combat loop

Ectoplasm Capacity is a lower priority for a melee-first character that rarely casts mutations. It becomes more important when mutations are central to your damage or control plan. Capacity increases the amount of Ectoplasm available for that loop, while Ectoplasm Drain supports more frequent ability use. For a mutation-heavy build, take the two together rather than adding Capacity without a way to turn the larger pool into additional casts.

If you are unsure which direction you will prefer, delay a deep Ectoplasm investment until your weapon and defensive habits are stable. A larger resource pool cannot compensate for repeatedly running out of stamina or dying before a mutation matters.

4. Choose one second-row identity

Once the stamina threshold opens the second row, select the option that reinforces the behavior you can perform consistently:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Parry Impact: for a parry-centered melee loop built on deliberate deflections.
  • Block plus health: for a defensive learner who wants more tolerance while reading groups and attack strings.
  • Ectoplasm Capacity plus Drain: for frequent mutation casting, with enough health retained to survive mistakes.

Do not take Parry Impact merely because a high-skill build sounds powerful. If your current timing is unreliable, Block and health can produce more successful fights, which in turn gives you more opportunities to practice parries safely.

First-25-level priority at a glance

Priority Investment Why it belongs here Who may change the order
1 First four Max Stamina points Stamina governs attacks and dodges and unlocks the second upgrade row. No starting style needs to skip this foundation.
2 Max Health Provides a buffer while you learn enemy patterns and recover from imperfect timing. Raise it immediately if a repeated combo kills you before you can respond.
3 Ectoplasm Capacity Expands the resource available for mutation use. Mutation-heavy builds should move it earlier; melee-first builds can delay it.
4 Ectoplasm Drain Pairs with Capacity to support more frequent ability use. Take it when mutations are a regular part of your loop rather than an occasional tool.
5 Parry Impact or Block Defines whether your defense is built around clean deflects or forgiving protection. Choose Parry Impact only if you want to practice and rely on parry timing.

Choose a weapon by risk, timing and resource demand

The developer describes six weapons overall, each with its own upgrade tree. The publicly described identities are enough to make a first choice without treating one weapon as a mandatory winner:

Weapon or category Developer-described identity Natural first-build fit Main consideration
Saber Balanced all-round weapon Best baseline for a player still learning ranges, stamina spending and enemy patterns. It is the forgiving reference point rather than a specialist choice.
Rapier Precision weapon that rewards parry timing Parry duelist using Parry Impact and deliberate deflections. Its value depends on consistent timing; missed parries remove the advantage.
Greatsword Raw power Heavy-weapon learner pairing Max Health with Block when groups become difficult. Plan each commitment so a large attack does not leave you without a dodge.
Firearms Ranged options with their own roles Players who want distance, a different engagement rhythm or a Gun & Blade direction later. Keep the stamina and defensive foundation; ranged access does not remove the need to survive close pressure.

Weapon choice is a preference and timing decision, not a class commitment. The saber is the safest starting recommendation because it does not demand a narrow execution pattern. Choose the rapier when you genuinely want parry practice, the greatsword when you prefer deliberate high-impact attacks, and firearms when controlling distance is central to how you think about encounters.

Four practical first-character builds

Balanced first run

Priority: Max Stamina, then Max Health, then saber upgrades, followed by Parry Impact or Block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is the default for a player who has not yet decided whether parries, blocks, mutations or ranged attacks will define the character. The saber gives you a balanced baseline while you learn how much stamina a normal exchange consumes. Add Parry Impact if you are beginning to land clean deflects; choose Block if your successful fights depend more on absorbing pressure and waiting for a safe opening.

Keep Ectoplasm investment modest until you know whether mutations are a regular part of your decisions. You can move toward that resource path later without having built a character around it from the beginning.

Parry duelist

Priority: Max Stamina, Parry Impact, then rapier or saber upgrades that reward clean deflects.

The rapier is the clearest expression of this style because the developer specifically ties it to precision and parry timing. Parry Impact supports a loop in which you wait for a readable attack, deflect it, and use the resulting opening rather than spending stamina on constant evasive movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat every enemy as a parry test. Preserve enough stamina for a dodge when an attack is unfamiliar, delayed or coming from outside your view. Add Max Health before pushing deeper into the parry identity if one mistake ends every attempt; practice is more productive when a late input is survivable.

Mutation hybrid

Priority: Max Stamina, Ectoplasm Capacity, Ectoplasm Drain, then enough Max Health to survive mistakes.

This build treats mutations as a recurring part of neutral rather than an emergency button. Capacity gives you room for the resource, while Drain supports more frequent use. Stamina still comes first because a mutation-focused character must be able to reposition or dodge after casting.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.

Keep a health buffer even when the resource engine feels powerful. A mutation that is unavailable, mistimed or used against the wrong target does not protect you from the next hit. The hybrid works best when mutations create an opening that your weapon can exploit, not when every encounter depends on a perfect cast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Heavy-weapon learner

Priority: Max Stamina, Max Health, greatsword upgrades, then Block when groups overwhelm you.

The greatsword’s identity is raw power, so this route emphasizes choosing a safe moment for a committed attack. Max Health lets you learn those moments without losing the character to every imperfect read. Block is a practical second-row choice when several enemies make a clean dodge or parry difficult.

Large attacks still need stamina discipline. A heavy weapon does not justify spending the entire bar; leave enough for a dodge when the target can retaliate before your recovery ends. If you find yourself blocking every exchange, use that safety to observe patterns and gradually replace predictable blocks with attacks or better positioning.

How weapon upgrade trees change the build

Each of the six weapons has a unique upgrade tree. Upgrades can unlock abilities and significantly change how a weapon works, so the weapon you select at the start is only the beginning of its identity. Examine an upgrade for the behavior it asks you to repeat:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An upgrade that rewards deflects belongs in a parry loop, not on a character that rarely attempts them.
  • An upgrade that changes attack commitment matters more for a greatsword user than for someone who depends on quick defensive reactions.
  • An ability that consumes or benefits from Ectoplasm is more valuable when Capacity and Drain are already part of your plan.
  • A firearm upgrade should be judged by how it fits your preferred distance and by whether you can still defend yourself when enemies close the gap.

You can switch among options you have unlocked. That flexibility means you should test a new option when the current one no longer matches your habits instead of assuming the first selection is permanent. Switching is not the same as having every upgrade immediately available: you still need to unlock the choices in the relevant tree.

“Hi! We’re planning to add New Game+ post-launch. However, there are no bespoke or class-based weapons in Valor Mortis.”

That developer statement is important for planning: there is no hidden class weapon that you must preserve a character for. Build around the weapon behavior you enjoy now, knowing that the game does not require a class-specific arsenal.

Ambers: your passive layer from level 5 onward

PC Gamer describes Ambers as precious gems that you equip for passive bonuses and abilities. They come from quests and chests, can be swapped, and duplicate copies strengthen the passive effect. Your first slot opens at level 5, with additional slots at levels 15, 25, 35 and 45.

Character level Amber slots available Build-planning implication
5 1 Choose the passive that most directly supports your current weapon loop.
15 2 Add a defensive or resource complement rather than duplicating the same need.
25 3 Use the larger set of passives to reinforce your chosen identity while keeping a response to its weakness.
35 4 Broaden the build only after its core combat behavior is reliable.
45 5 Complete the five-slot setup with passives that cover the encounters you are actually facing.

Because Ambers are swappable, do not hoard an empty slot while waiting for an imagined perfect combination. Equip a useful passive for the section you are playing, then change it when your weapon, resource demand or defensive problem changes. Duplicates strengthen the passive effect, so receiving a repeat is still meaningful rather than a dead drop.

Build your combat loop, not just your stat sheet

Stamina loop

Begin an exchange with a plan for how you will leave it. Attack only when you can finish with a dodge available, or when your position and enemy recovery make retaliation impossible. If the bar is empty, stop attacking and create space rather than hoping the opponent waits for recovery.

Parry loop

Watch for a repeatable attack animation, keep enough stamina for a failed read, and use the opening created by a successful deflect. The rapier and Parry Impact make this loop explicit, but a saber can also support it for players who want a less specialized baseline.

Block loop

Block is the forgiving option when several threats make precise timing unreliable. Pair it with Max Health so a blocked sequence or one late input does not end the attempt. Blocking should create a moment to reposition or counter; it is not a reason to spend the entire fight waiting behind defense.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mutation loop

Capacity and Drain matter only when mutations are used often enough to justify them. Decide what a mutation is supposed to do in your plan—create an opening, control pressure or add damage—then cast with enough stamina left to respond to the enemy’s next action. If you repeatedly die while holding Ectoplasm for a “better” moment, use it earlier and evaluate the result.

Ranged loop

Firearms add distance, but they do not remove close-range risk. Keep a defensive fallback for when an enemy reaches you, and avoid spending stamina or other resources so freely at range that you cannot dodge the approach. A Gun & Blade direction can combine ranged access with a melee answer rather than treating the two as separate characters.

Common first-build mistakes and fixes

Spending every early point on damage

Symptom: attacks feel strong, but you are repeatedly caught without a dodge.

Fix: return to the Max Stamina foundation and preserve one dodge after each exchange. Add Max Health if the resulting mistakes are still fatal.

Taking Ectoplasm upgrades without using mutations

Symptom: you have a larger resource pool but your fights look exactly the same.

Fix: delay further Capacity investment and put points into health or the defensive identity that you actually perform. If you want a mutation build, add Drain as well and make casting part of the normal loop.

Choosing Parry Impact before learning the timing

Symptom: the build promises parry rewards, but missed inputs consume health and attempts.

Fix: use Block and health while you practice readable attacks, or keep the saber as a more forgiving weapon. Move into the rapier and deeper parry specialization when deflections are becoming dependable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing weapons without changing the supporting stats

Symptom: a new weapon feels awkward even though its attacks look appealing.

Fix: match the rest of the build to the new behavior. A rapier wants precision, a greatsword wants commitment windows, and a mutation or firearm plan needs the resources and defensive reserve to survive its setup.

Treating the first upgrade as irreversible

Symptom: you keep an unlocked ability you dislike because you assume the initial choice cannot change.

Fix: switch among the options you have unlocked and test the one that better matches your current loop. The game allows experimentation within the unlocked upgrade choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where to specialize after level 25

By level 25 you should know whether your successful fights come from deflects, blocks, mutations, heavy commitments or distance. Use that evidence to select a later path rather than selecting a name because it sounds powerful. The build index lists Stagnation, Pistol, Parry, Greatsword, Fire, Spellblade, Gun & Blade and Claymore paths for later specialization.

  • Parry: continue the precision route if clean deflects are now a reliable source of openings.
  • Greatsword or Claymore: deepen a heavy-weapon identity when you are comfortable managing commitment and recovery.
  • Pistol or Gun & Blade: emphasize firearms while retaining a close-range answer for pressure.
  • Fire or Spellblade: explore ability-oriented directions when Ectoplasm use has become a normal part of combat.
  • Stagnation: use it as a later specialization only after you understand how its listed path fits your preferred control and resource rhythm.

These names identify possible directions, not independently tested damage rankings. Your best path is the one whose required timing and resource use you can execute consistently.

A simple decision process before each upgrade

  1. Identify the failure: are you dying because stamina is empty, health is too low, timing is late, or a mutation is unavailable?
  2. Choose the stat that fixes that failure: Max Stamina for attack-and-dodge capacity, Max Health for survivability, Ectoplasm Capacity and Drain for frequent mutations, or Parry Impact/Block for your defensive loop.
  3. Check the weapon behavior: confirm that the next weapon upgrade rewards what you actually do in fights.
  4. Equip the best available Amber: use the passive immediately, and swap it when the encounter or build changes.
  5. Retest the loop: enter the next fight trying to perform the behavior the upgrade supports, while preserving a dodge or another defensive answer.

This process prevents a common trap: solving a theoretical problem while ignoring the reason your last attempt failed. Your first character becomes stronger when each upgrade removes a real failure mode.

Bottom line for a first playthrough

Build the foundation with four Max Stamina points, then buy enough Max Health to survive your learning curve. Use the second row to commit to Parry Impact, Block or the Ectoplasm Capacity-and-Drain pairing. Start with the saber if you want the least demanding baseline; choose the rapier for deliberate parries, the greatsword for raw-power commitments, or firearms for a ranged emphasis. Treat weapon trees and Ambers as adjustable layers: unlock options, swap what you have earned, and let your observed combat habits—not a supposed class tier list—determine the specialization you pursue after level 25.
