There is no permanent best Sword Hero build yet. ForestWare/Crytivo has not released the full game, a final item catalogue, or the damage and cost formulas needed for a trustworthy tier list. The official Steam page lists the full release date as “To be announced,” while its combat-arena demo is available to download. For the current demo, the strongest practical setup is a controllable melee weapon, reliable directional attacks, early parry practice, conservative stamina use, and careful route planning around enemies that do not scale to your level.

This guide separates systems demonstrated in the demo or confirmed in the official listing from roadmap features whose numbers may change. Use it to build good habits now without treating provisional Strength, Dexterity, Arcane, abilities, perks, equipment, or Masters as settled endgame facts.

What “best build” means in Sword Hero right now

Sword Hero is an unreleased open-world RPG rather than a finished live-service game with an established meta. The official listing describes a seamless world with day-night and weather systems, NPC routines and memories, crime and reputation, faction skirmishes, limb-based directional combat, housing, visible stat effects, prosthetics, non-level-scaling enemies, and a six-chapter branching story. Those systems make a single damage-maximizing template a poor fit even after launch: preparation, route choice, reputation, equipment access, and the condition of your character can matter as much as a nominal attack number.

The combat-arena demo is the only version for which players can currently practice the core loop. It does not establish final item rarity, the complete lesson catalogue, respec rules, ability costs, or endgame best-in-slot weapons. Any guide that assigns exact stat ratios or names one unbeatable sword is presenting speculation as fact.

Steam Community Update 4, version 0.0.14, records shields, false limbs, physicians, a quest-system implementation, bow Dexterity-scaling adjustments, and status-screen work in a development build. These notes are version-specific implementation information, not a promise that the same values will ship.

Build around a weapon you can aim, not a weapon with a guessed tier

Choose the sword or other melee weapon whose attack arcs you can consistently direct. In the demo, the important distinction is not a community label such as “S tier”; it is whether you can place the correct strike while moving, keep enough stamina to defend, and recover before the opponent reaches you.

Learn the three directional attack patterns

The combat description compares the system with directional melee in which the direction you are moving when you attack determines the strike. Practice each pattern deliberately:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Thrust: Use a forward-oriented input when you need a direct attack into an opening or toward a vulnerable body part. Confirm that your spacing is correct before committing; a missed thrust can leave you recovering in front of the enemy.
  • Swing: Use lateral movement and aim to produce a horizontal cut. A swing is useful when an opponent steps across your line, but its arc and recovery depend on the weapon and the direction you provide.
  • Spin slash: Use the appropriate turning movement for a broader attack. Treat it as a deliberate space-making option rather than a button to repeat blindly, because a wide animation can expose you if it fails to connect.

Spend the opening minutes of every new demo session identifying how far each pattern reaches and how quickly you can defend afterward. Record your observations in practical terms—“one step away,” “safe after a hit,” or “needs a parry”—instead of assigning damage values that the game has not published.

Compare weapons using behavior that survives balance changes

Criterion Question to answer in the demo Why it matters
Directional reach Can you reliably land the thrust, swing, and spin slash from the distance you normally fight? Missed spacing wastes stamina and gives non-scaling enemies time to punish you.
Recovery After each attack, can you move, parry, or block before the enemy reaches you? A slightly slower weapon may be safer if its recovery is predictable.
Parry compatibility Can you return to a defensive input quickly after the weapon’s animation? Parry is the most valuable early defensive skill because it creates distance and restores mana.
Stamina demand How many attacks can you make while retaining enough stamina for a late block? A mistimed block drains stamina; exhausting the bar removes your emergency option.
Body-part access Can the weapon reach the exposed limb or other vulnerable area you are trying to target? Limb-based damage can change the value of reach and angle more than raw damage would.
Injury tolerance Can you continue fighting if the dominant hand or another limb is wounded? Planned wounds, infections, prosthetics, and permanent scars make weapon usability part of survivability.

Do not call a named sword “best” until ForestWare publishes a stable item catalogue and formulas. A weapon that feels dominant in one demo build may change when shields, injuries, abilities, or enemy encounters are revised.

Make parry your first combat skill

A correct parry is more than damage reduction: it pushes the enemy back and grants mana for special abilities. A late or mistimed block still reduces incoming damage, but it consumes stamina. That creates a clear priority for practice: learn the opponent’s attack cue, attempt the timed parry, and keep enough stamina to survive if your timing is wrong.

A practical parry drill

  1. Begin with one opponent and no environmental distractions. Watch the attack animation rather than reacting to the enemy’s distance alone.
  2. Hold your position long enough to identify the moment the strike would connect. The goal is a repeatable visual cue, not a random reaction.
  3. Attempt the defensive input at that cue. A successful parry should produce the pushback and mana gain described for the demo’s melee system.
  4. After a successful parry, take the safe opening for one controlled attack or a mana-powered ability. Do not spend the entire opening on a long sequence you cannot recover from.
  5. If you are late, accept the stamina cost of the mitigating block and disengage rather than immediately chaining another attack.
  6. Repeat until you can parry several attacks without emptying stamina. Then add a second enemy and practice choosing which threat to face.

This rotation—parry, controlled punish, reposition, recover—outperforms uncontrolled attacking because mana generation and enemy displacement reinforce one another. Exact timing windows and resource amounts are not published, so tune the rhythm to the active build rather than copying a number from an older video.

Use the kick and arena hazards as control tools

The demo includes a kick ability that can interrupt or reposition enemies. PC Gamer observed the warrior and rogue kick ragdolling enemies, with spike walls capable of lethal environmental follow-up. That makes the kick valuable even when its direct damage is modest.

When to kick

  • Kick an enemy that is closing while your weapon is recovering.
  • Kick to create a lane for a retreat when two opponents overlap.
  • Angle the kick toward a hazard only when you have enough space to avoid following the enemy into danger.
  • Use the resulting separation to reset stamina and attempt a clean parry rather than starting a panic combo.

Hazards are situational. A spike wall can end an encounter quickly, but relying on it teaches positioning that may not transfer to the open world. Treat the kick as a reliable interruption and the hazard as an opportunistic finish.

How to spend Strength, Dexterity, and Arcane points

The planned framework names Strength, Dexterity, and Arcane, plus secondary stats, abilities, perks, Learning Points, equipment, and Masters. Published materials do not provide final damage, speed, defense, mana, or ability-cost formulas. The safest approach is to spend conservatively and verify the active in-game description after every update.

Investment Reason to consider it Risk while values are provisional Demo approach
Strength Likely to support a direct melee identity and heavier weapon use, subject to the final formula. A point may not improve the attack or weapon you are testing as expected. Invest only after confirming the current description and observing a meaningful change in your chosen attack.
Dexterity May support faster, more precise, or ranged behavior; the development notes specifically mention bow Dexterity-scaling adjustments. Scaling can change between builds, and a bow adjustment does not establish melee scaling. Use it when your build depends on control, speed, or a confirmed Dexterity-linked ability, then recheck after patches.
Arcane May improve access to or effectiveness of mana-based abilities. Ability costs, returns, and final spell coefficients are not published. Prioritize only when you are consistently generating mana through parries and can explain what the next point enables.
Secondary stats Can fill survivability, control, or utility gaps once their descriptions are clear. The roadmap does not list a final catalogue or caps. Prefer a point that solves a demonstrated weakness over a speculative damage increase.

There is no evidence for a definitive ratio such as “three Strength for every Dexterity” or a universal Arcane threshold. Keep a written note of your current points, equipment, and observed effects so you can recognize a balance change and rebuild without assuming an old allocation remains optimal.

Build a combat loop that protects stamina and mana

A resilient demo build follows a short loop rather than a fixed combo:

  1. Approach on your terms. Choose a lane with room to retreat and avoid pulling extra enemies while learning an encounter.
  2. Start with a readable directional attack. Use a thrust, swing, or spin slash that matches your distance and the opening you see.
  3. Return to defence. Do not spend all stamina on attacks. Your next decision should be a parry attempt, not an automatic second swing.
  4. Parry for space and mana. On success, use the pushback to reset range and reserve the mana for a high-value ability.
  5. Kick or reposition when the rhythm breaks. An interruption is preferable to trading damage while wounded.
  6. Finish only when the recovery is safe. A low-health enemy is not worth losing your dominant hand, weapon access, or escape route.

Because enemies do not scale to your level, you cannot assume that a few extra points will make a dangerous area safe. Preparation and route choice are part of the build.

Plan routes around non-level-scaling enemies and factions

The official design makes preparation matter: enemies retain their own challenge instead of automatically matching your level. Before entering a difficult area, compare what each route gives you and what it risks.

Questions to ask before choosing a route

  • Can a faction provide equipment or resources that solve your current weakness?
  • What reputation or crime consequence follows from taking the faster but hostile route?
  • Does the route offer room to practice parries, or does it force several enemies into a confined fight?
  • Can you reach a physician, housing, or another recovery option before an injury becomes a larger problem?
  • Is the reward worth exposing a wounded limb or irreplaceable equipment?

Factions are not merely vendors in the stated design. Faction skirmishes, reputation, NPC memories, crime, and tragedy events can change the surrounding world. A route that yields immediate gear may close or complicate later interactions, so record the consequence of major choices instead of judging a path only by its first reward.

Treat injuries as a build constraint

Body-part damage is a central design element, and wounds, infections, prosthetics, and permanent scars are planned or demonstrated systems. Losing the dominant hand can remove your ability to fight or interact effectively. That makes survivability more than a health-bar calculation.

Injury-management checklist

  • Do not trade hits merely to finish a nearly defeated enemy.
  • Preserve the limb your current weapon and interaction actions depend on.
  • Leave an encounter when stamina is low and your next block is likely to be late.
  • Seek a physician or other recovery option when the active build exposes a worsening wound or infection.
  • Keep an alternative plan for movement and defence if a limb becomes unusable; do not assume a prosthetic will immediately reproduce the same handling.
  • Reconsider a weapon whose effectiveness collapses after one injury, especially on a route with repeated non-scaling encounters.

Permanent scars and prosthetics can become part of the character’s story, but they should not be treated as confirmed numerical bonuses until the game publishes their rules.

What the demo can prove—and what it cannot

You can test now You cannot responsibly conclude yet

How consistently you can parry and how the pushback changes spacing. The final parry window, stamina price, or mana reward.
Whether kick and arena hazards help you control a fight. That an arena hazard will exist or function identically throughout the open world.
Which attack leaves you enough stamina to defend. Final Strength, Dexterity, Arcane, or secondary-stat coefficients.
How an injury changes your current controls and weapon use. Final infection, prosthetic, scar, physician, or limb-loss progression.
How a faction or route changes the current build’s access to gear and resources. The complete faction reward and reputation consequence map.

Common mistakes and fixes

“I need to grind levels before attempting this area.”

Levels do not automatically make a non-scaling enemy weaker. Improve your spacing, learn the attack cue, obtain useful equipment or resources, and choose a safer approach. Return later only when you have a concrete preparation advantage.

“Blocking is safer than parrying, so I should hold defence constantly.”

A late block mitigates damage but drains stamina. Holding defence without a plan can leave you unable to move or respond. Practice the parry timing, and use a block as a fallback while preserving a stamina reserve.

“More attacks always mean more damage.”

Directional attacks require correct movement and aim. A missed swing or spin slash can cost the stamina needed for defence. Use one deliberate strike, observe the recovery, and attack again only when the opening remains.

“The highest listed stat must be the meta choice.”

The roadmap does not publish complete formulas. A point that looks offensive may fail to help your weapon, while Arcane may matter more if your parries reliably fund a decisive ability. Spend only when the current description and your observed result justify it.

“A wounded limb is only cosmetic.”

Body-part damage can affect whether you can fight or interact. Withdraw before a manageable wound becomes an infection, permanent scar, or loss of your primary tool.

A repeatable setup for each demo session

  1. Choose one melee weapon whose attack arcs you can describe and aim.
  2. Spend the first practice fight identifying the directional input for each attack pattern.
  3. Reserve stamina for a defensive response; do not empty the bar on a long sequence.
  4. Practice parry timing until a successful parry reliably creates distance and mana.
  5. Add kick usage and test whether an interruption gives you a safe retreat.
  6. Use one conservative stat investment only after reading the active description and noting the expected effect.
  7. Before a difficult route, compare faction rewards, reputation consequences, available recovery, and enemy positioning.
  8. After an injury or patch, retest the weapon, parry, and stat interaction instead of relying on an old build note.

When a real meta guide will be possible

A definitive build will require a stable full release or a development build that publishes, at minimum, the complete item and ability catalogue, scaling formulas, resource costs, progression caps, respec rules, and reliable enemy data. Until then, the best character is the one that converts the demo’s confirmed mechanics into repeatable decisions: aim attacks directionally, parry for displacement and mana, protect stamina, use kick and terrain intelligently, and route around the fixed challenge of non-scaling enemies.
