For campaign, start with Arthur, Bella, Celia, Claire and your strongest available Warrior. Put Arthur and Bella on the frontline, keep Celia and Claire behind them, and use the fifth slot for the best-invested Warrior you can obtain. If you make the optional low-spend purchase, Marlena is the most useful replacement for that flex slot. Raise Arthur first: his shields and damage reduction protect the entire formation and remain valuable when the rest of your roster changes.
That is a reliable starting point, not a universal PvP answer. Campaign rewards durability and sustained damage, while arena fights depend on scouting, burst timing and faction counters. The guide below separates the stable campaign core from the adjustments that make it work against real opponents.
The best all-purpose campaign team
The most practical broadly accessible five-hero core is:

FinalBoss’s free-to-play guide notes that Harper can eventually occupy the fifth slot when she becomes available on your server. Until then, do not hold the team back for a specific name: use the strongest Warrior you can actually raise.

Arthur is the first UR tank obtainable and upgradeable through summon fragments. Bella is an SSR whose fragments come through the Alliance Shop. Celia is a starter SSR, so she is normally much easier to develop than a late-game limited unit. Claire is an SSR, but her Warrior buffs make her useful even when your roster contains higher-rarity heroes that are still under-invested.
Why this core works in campaign
Campaign stages are won by surviving enough enemy attacks for your damage dealers to finish the wave. Arthur and Bella absorb the opening pressure, Celia improves the resources earned while you farm, and Claire amplifies your most heavily built Warriors. The fifth slot remains flexible because campaign difficulty, available shards and your current gear change over time.
Do not interpret “best” as “five highest rarity portraits.” The community squad builder’s guidance is explicit that two well-raised SSR heroes can outperform five bare UR heroes. A lower-rarity hero with complete skills, gear and levels is often the correct choice for progression.

Formation: where every hero should stand
Use a simple front-to-back arrangement:
- Frontline: Arthur and Bella. Frontline heroes receive most enemy attacks, so this is where your defensive statistics and mitigation belong.
- Backline: Celia, Claire and the fifth Warrior. Backline heroes are safer from ordinary attacks but can still be reached by area-of-effect abilities.
If the game offers more than two front positions, keep Arthur in the position most likely to be targeted and place Bella beside him. The goal is not to hide every damage dealer perfectly; it is to make sure the tank wall remains alive through the first enemy cycle.
AoE attacks are the principal reason not to treat the backline as invulnerable. If an enemy repeatedly reaches Claire or Celia, move the less essential support unit into the safer position and preserve Claire’s uptime. The exact tile can change by stage; the frontline/backline principle does not.

Faction bonuses and counter rules
Keeping heroes from the same faction produces a meaningful campaign bonus:

The recommended core therefore uses a fifth Warrior rather than an unrelated damage dealer whenever that Warrior is reasonably developed. A 20% attribute bonus can outweigh a small paper increase from a hero who has better rarity but weaker equipment.

PvP adds a separate counter triangle:

These bonuses answer different questions. Same-faction bonuses strengthen your own formation; the counter advantage reduces incoming damage from a specific enemy faction. In arena play, the counter can be more important than preserving a fixed five-hero lineup.
Investment order: who to raise first
- Build Arthur first. Prioritize his level, defensive equipment, skills and available summon fragments. The community model identifies his shield and two damage-reduction sources as the largest survivability contribution in the recommended squad.
- Stabilize Bella next. A second tank prevents Arthur from carrying every hit alone and gives you a durable answer to PvE monster damage.
- Develop Claire as your main damage engine. Her attack buff scales with the three highest-attack Warriors, so concentrate your best offensive gear on the Warriors she is meant to amplify rather than spreading it across unrelated heroes.
- Keep Celia close enough to survive. Her resource bonuses matter over many campaign stages, but she does not need to consume your best damage gear. Give her enough durability to remain active.
- Use the fifth slot as an investment test. Choose the Warrior with the best combination of level, stars, skills and gear. Replace that hero with Harper when Harper is unlocked and can be raised to a comparable level.
This order concentrates resources where they improve the whole team. Raising five heroes evenly can leave every hero too weak to clear the next wall; raising Arthur and one damage dealer first gives you a tank that buys time and a carry that converts that time into kills.
Free-to-play and low-spend choices
Free-to-play route
Use Arthur, Bella, Celia, Claire and the strongest Warrior already supported by your shards. Bella’s Alliance Shop fragments and Celia’s starter availability make the core less dependent on lucky summons than a lineup built entirely around new UR units. Save resources for the heroes you can repeatedly upgrade rather than abandoning a developed SSR for an unbuilt pull.

Optional low-spend route
Pocket Gamer reports that Marlena is included in the “1st Top Up” pack for about $1 and that her area damage works in both PvE and PvP. The price and availability are patch- and region-sensitive, so verify the offer in your own account before paying. If you take the offer, replace the campaign team’s fifth flex Warrior with Marlena when her investment level is high enough to contribute more than the existing Warrior.

Marlena is not a requirement for campaign progress. She is valuable because the same investment can help in both modes, reducing the need to build a completely separate damage roster. Do not buy a top-up solely to repair a formation whose tanks or core skills are still underdeveloped.
How to judge a team beyond rarity
The unofficial squad builder models effectiveness as survivability multiplied by damage per second over a 30-second reference fight. Its dataset covers 169,911 five-hero squads and is labelled “Wiki Last Asylum, 2026.” Treat the figures as community-model outputs, not publisher performance statistics.

Use these observations as a diagnostic. If a stage timer expires while every hero is healthy, add damage or improve Claire’s offensive investment. If your carry dies before the first major enemy skill, add durability, adjust positions or use a counter faction instead of chasing a higher rarity.
A practical PvP starting squad
PvP does not have one lineup that defeats every faction and investment level. A strong starting shell is:

- Arthur in front: team damage reduction and shields give your side time to execute its opening.
- Marlena behind Arthur: use her as the primary burst carry when available; her opening attack is intended to reach priority enemies.
- Bella as the tank alternative: use her when Arthur is unavailable or when a second durable frontliner is needed.
- Claire, Stellar, Griffith or another counter-pick in the remaining slots: choose based on the enemy faction, target access and your actual investment.
The LDShop guide describes Arthur as a UR Warrior/Tank, Marlena as a UR Warrior/Carry, Bella as the accessible tank alternative and Grenwald as a high-damage but fragile Warlock option. Grenwald can punish an exposed target, but he needs protection; placing a fragile Warlock into an unscouted fight is not automatically an upgrade.
Scout first, then select the counter
Before locking a PvP squad, inspect the opponent’s faction mix and likely opening threat. The practical rule from the PvP guide is that composition, scouting and type matchups can beat raw power in many fights.

Countering the enemy faction does not excuse poor positioning. Keep tanks in front, put the carry behind them, and use a flex hero to reach the opponent’s key damage dealer or support. If the enemy’s strongest unit is protected by a tank, a counter faction with no target access may perform worse than a slightly less ideal faction with a clear burst path.
When to break the campaign lineup
Keep the Arthur–Bella–Celia–Claire core when scouting shows a mixed or unfamiliar opponent. Break it when the enemy is heavily concentrated in one faction and you have a well-developed counter hero. A counter pick is worthwhile only if its level, skills and equipment are close enough to the hero it replaces; an unbuilt counter is just a weaker unit with the correct label.
Replacement decisions when a hero is missing
No Arthur yet
Use Bella as the main tank and invest in her immediately rather than waiting on a summon. Add another durable Warrior or tank in the flex position. Once Arthur’s fragments become available and he is raised to a usable level, move him to the frontline and keep Bella as the second tank.

No Bella
Keep Arthur in front and use your strongest defensively built Warrior or tank as the partner. Do not move Claire into the frontline to fill a durability gap; her value comes from surviving long enough to buff Warriors and use her area attack.
No Claire
Use the best-invested Warrior damage dealer you own and preserve the two-tank structure. Revisit the lineup when Claire becomes available because her three-highest-attack Warrior buff changes how offensive gear should be concentrated.
No Marlena
Use your strongest Warrior in campaign and choose Claire, Stellar, Griffith or a counter-pick in PvP. Marlena is a flexible burst option, not a mandatory gate for either mode.
Harper is available
Compare Harper’s real level, stars, skills and gear with the current fifth Warrior. Replace the flex hero only when Harper’s completed investment produces more damage or better utility; a newly unlocked hero with no upgrades is not automatically stronger.
Common mistakes that create a progression wall
- Building five damage dealers: the community model’s 15/100 result illustrates why an all-carry formation often dies before its damage matters.
- Ignoring Arthur because another hero has higher rarity: Arthur’s team-wide mitigation protects every subsequent investment.
- Putting Claire or Celia in front: backline heroes can still be hit by AoE, but they should not receive the ordinary frontline attack stream.
- Chasing faction bonus at any cost: a badly under-invested fifth Warrior can be weaker than a developed counter-pick in PvP.
- Using the same PvP team against every opponent: scouting and the Warrior–Warlock–Ranger triangle are central to arena decisions.
- Spreading gear evenly: concentrate defensive resources on Arthur and Bella, then offensive resources on Claire and the Warriors she buffs.
- Treating model scores as official statistics: the 30-second efficiency numbers come from a community squad builder, not a publisher benchmark.
Version and acquisition caveats
Hero strength, shard routes and offers can change with updates. Pocket Gamer’s guide was updated on October 5, 2026 for version 1.0.65. FinalBoss updated its free-to-play guide on September 14, 2026 for iOS v1.0.63 and Android v1.0.102. Those version labels are not interchangeable, and a later server or regional build can show different availability.
Check the in-game summon, Alliance Shop and top-up screens before committing resources. In particular, verify whether Marlena’s “1st Top Up” offer is still present and whether the listed price applies to your region. Treat Harper’s availability as server-dependent rather than assuming every account can recruit her immediately.
A repeatable team-building checklist
- Choose Arthur as the first long-term investment whenever you can obtain his fragments.
- Pair him with Bella or your best available secondary tank.
- Place tanks on the frontline and Celia, Claire and damage dealers behind them.
- Use Claire and the strongest developed Warriors to turn defense into sustained damage.
- Preserve the five-hero faction bonus when the replacement is similarly invested.
- For PvP, scout the opponent, identify the dominant faction and select the appropriate counter.
- After each loss, identify whether the failure was survival, damage, target access or a faction mismatch before changing heroes.
This process keeps campaign progression stable while leaving enough flexibility for PvP. The core gives you a durable baseline; investment quality, formation and matchup selection determine how far that baseline can go.
