Yes. A LEGO model can include hand-operated mechanisms, motor-driven movement, working LED lights and programmed responses. LEGO’s Powered Up system provides compatible motors, hubs, lights and controls; the finished result depends on matching those electrical parts to a suitable mechanism and power source. A motor added to an otherwise unpowered model will not run by itself, and a sound effect played by the Powered Up app comes from the connected phone or tablet rather than a speaker inside the model.

You can build anything from turning wheels and a lifting crane to a moving train, spinning carousel or illuminated display. The practical recipe is mechanism and motor → compatible Powered Up hub or battery box → batteries → app, remote or physical switch. The sections below explain which parts fit together, how to plan a retrofit and what to check when motion or lights do not work.

What counts as working electronics or movement in a LEGO model?

There are three different kinds of functionality, and separating them prevents unrealistic expectations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Mechanical movement: gears, levers, linkages, wheels, pedals or keys move when you turn or press them by hand. No electronics are required.
  • Motor-driven movement: a compatible motor supplies continuous force to gears, axles, steering, a crane, fan blades or another mechanism. The motor still needs a compatible hub or battery box, batteries and a control method.
  • Electronic effects: Powered Up lights can illuminate a model, while a program can react to controls or compatible sensors. App sound is generated by the connected device, not by the LEGO model itself.

A build may combine all three. For example, a mechanism can be moved manually when the motor is off, then driven automatically when the motor is powered. Whether a particular existing set has enough room for a retrofit cannot be assumed; the motor, wiring, hub and batteries all need physical space and unobstructed movement.

Which LEGO Powered Up parts make a model move or light up?

LEGO documents several components for custom builds. Their roles are not interchangeable, so choose the hub and control method at the same time as the motor or light.

Powered Up components and documented roles (specifications checked Nov 2026)
Component Primary role Documented details
Technic Large Motor 88013 Drives mechanisms such as gearing or steering Requires a separately sold compatible Technic Hub
Technic Hub 88012 Power and control for compatible motors, lights and other Powered Up elements Four input/output ports; Bluetooth app compatibility; specifies six AA batteries, not included
Technic Battery Box 88015 Battery power with physical direction switches Specifies six AA batteries, not included; use only with compatible components
Hub 88009 Compact hub for specified Powered Up builds Two input/output ports; LEGO identifies it specifically for Train Motor 88011; check its packaging for battery type and quantity
Train Motor 88011 Propels a LEGO train Includes wheels and axles; LEGO specifies Hub 88009 for this motor
Powered Up Light 88005 Illuminates a model Two LED lights and a connecting wire intended for a Powered Up Hub
Remote Control 88010 Handheld control for specified Powered Up builds Documented for builds using the 88006 Move Hub or 88009 Hub

The product numbers identify LEGO’s documented components, not a universal plug-and-play standard. Always confirm that the connector generation, hub and control method match before buying an accessory.

What does the Technic Large Motor 88013 do?

The 88013 is the part that supplies rotary force. LEGO describes it as suitable for mechanisms such as gearing or steering, so it can turn wheels, rotate a platform or move a linkage when the rest of the drivetrain is designed correctly. LEGO specifies a separately sold compatible Technic Hub; the motor alone has no independent control or power source.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should you choose a hub or a battery box?

The Technic Hub 88012 is the flexible choice when you want app control, multiple connected elements or programmable behavior. It has four input/output ports and Bluetooth app compatibility. The Technic Battery Box 88015 is a simpler physical-control option: its switches provide direction control without requiring an app, but it does not turn an incompatible motor into a compatible one.

Hub 88009 has two ports and is explicitly associated with Train Motor 88011. Its listing tells builders to check the packaging for the battery type and quantity, so do not infer that it uses the same battery specification as Hub 88012 or Battery Box 88015.

How do LEGO lights work?

Powered Up Light 88005 contains two LEDs on a connecting wire intended for a Powered Up Hub. Connect the light to a compatible port, provide power through the specified hub or box and then use the supported control method to switch or program it. The lights are electrical components in the model; a phone playing a sound through the Powered Up app is not.

How does a motorized LEGO build work from end to end?

Think of the model as a chain in which every link has a separate job. A failure at any link can leave the model motionless even when the other parts are correct.

  1. Define the effect. Decide whether you need wheels turning, a lift, steering, a train motor, illumination, sensor response or several of these at once.
  2. Design the mechanism. Build gears, axles, linkages and supports that can move freely by hand. Leave clearance around moving parts and a route for the motor cable.
  3. Select the motor or light. Match the component to the load and the intended connection system. The 88013 is intended for geared or steering mechanisms; the 88011 is the documented train-motor example.
  4. Choose the matching power and control part. Use a compatible Technic Hub, Hub 88009 or Technic Battery Box 88015 as appropriate. A hub with more ports is useful only if your design actually needs those connections.
  5. Install the specified batteries. Hub 88012 and Battery Box 88015 each specify six AA batteries, which are not included. For Hub 88009, follow the battery information supplied with that product.
  6. Connect and secure the wiring. Keep plugs fully seated, protect wires from gears and allow enough slack for parts that move.
  7. Choose the control method. Use the Powered Up app and Bluetooth where supported, a documented handheld remote or the physical switches on the battery box. These controls are not universally interchangeable.
  8. Program gradually. Start with a low-complexity command such as on, off or one direction. Add timing, speed changes, lights or sensor responses only after the basic movement works.

This sequence also makes troubleshooting easier: if the mechanism turns freely by hand but does not respond electrically, inspect the connector, power source, hub compatibility and control device rather than rebuilding the entire model.

How do I add a motor to an existing LEGO model?

You can retrofit a model when it has enough room for the motor, hub or battery box, cables and a mechanically sound drive path. The safest approach is to treat the retrofit as a small redesign rather than simply attaching a motor to the outside.

  1. Inspect the load. Identify the axle, gear or linkage you want to drive and check that it moves without rubbing, binding or excessive weight.
  2. Plan the mounting points. Use a rigid frame so the motor does not twist away from the driven gear. Keep the hub or battery box accessible for battery changes and pairing or switching.
  3. Match the generation. Confirm that the motor and power/control component are from the same compatible Powered Up family. Do not rely on a connector that merely looks similar.
  4. Connect one function first. Start with the motor and hub or battery box. Add lights or additional motors only after the first movement is reliable.
  5. Check direction and gearing. Reverse the control direction if supported, or change the gear arrangement, rather than forcing a mechanism that is rotating the wrong way.
  6. Make the retrofit serviceable. Leave access to batteries, plugs and the hub. A permanently buried hub makes future diagnosis unnecessarily difficult.

LEGO does not establish that every finished set has spare internal volume for a particular motor. A successful retrofit therefore depends on the individual model’s geometry, not just on owning the correct electronics.

How can I control motion, lights and sensors?

Powered Up supports app-based programming for movement, lights and sensor-driven behavior when the connected components and device are supported. Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth version 4.1 or higher are specified for the app connection; device compatibility can change, so check LEGO’s current device guidance before purchasing around a particular phone or tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

App and Bluetooth control

The app is appropriate when you want timed sequences, adjustable speed, coordinated lights or a response to a sensor. Hub 88012 is documented as Bluetooth-app compatible. Pair the hub through the current Powered Up app, select the relevant control interface and assign commands to the connected ports.

Handheld remote control

Remote Control 88010 is documented for builds using the 88006 Move Hub or Hub 88009. That documentation does not establish support for every Technic configuration, so do not assume the remote will operate a Hub 88012 build simply because both products are in the Powered Up family.

Physical switches

The Technic Battery Box 88015 provides physical direction switches. It is useful for a display that should run without a phone, tablet or Bluetooth pairing, provided the selected motor or light is compatible with the box.

Can old Power Functions motors work with Powered Up?

No—not by simply plugging the older and newer systems together. LEGO describes Power Functions as a retired component system and explicitly warns that the generations are incompatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Powered Up hubs are not compatible with Power Function motors and Power Function hubs/receivers are not compatible with Powered Up motors.”

That means a Power Functions motor should not be recommended for a Powered Up hub, and a Power Functions hub or receiver should not be presented as a controller for a Powered Up motor. Check the connector and system name before purchasing used or leftover parts. If a project contains older electronics, plan it as a Power Functions build rather than mixing generations.

What is an example of a LEGO model with built-in movement?

LEGO Ideas Grand Piano 21323 demonstrates how mechanical action and electronics can coexist. Its keys and pedals have mechanical action, while a motor and the Powered Up app add automated behavior. It is an illustration of what a LEGO model can do, not evidence that the set is currently stocked by a particular retailer.

The example also shows why the mechanism comes first: the electronics enhance a physical linkage that has been designed to move. An app cannot compensate for a jammed axle, a gear that is too heavily loaded or a frame that flexes under torque.

What should I check when a LEGO model will not move or light up?

Use a fault-isolation order that starts with the simplest causes and avoids changing several variables at once.

  • Power: Install the specified batteries and confirm that the battery contacts and switch are in the on position.
  • Connections: Reseat every plug at the motor, light and hub. Inspect the cable path for a wire caught in a gear or pinched by a beam.
  • Compatibility: Verify that the motor, light, hub or battery box belong to a compatible system generation and that the control method is documented for that hub.
  • Mechanical blockage: Turn the mechanism by hand with power off. Remove a trapped axle, misaligned gear or overloaded linkage before applying power again.
  • Port assignment: In the app, select the port to which the component is actually connected. A motor on one port will not respond to a command configured for another.
  • Bluetooth and app support: Confirm that the phone or tablet meets the app’s Bluetooth requirements and that the hub is selected in the current app session.
  • Separate functions: Disconnect extra motors or lights temporarily and test one component. This identifies whether the fault is local or caused by the overall power and connection layout.

Do not assume that a silent app means the model contains a speaker. App audio is produced by the connected device, while the model’s physical effects come from its motors, lights and mechanisms.

What are the practical limits of electronic LEGO builds?

The main limits are space, load, power and compatibility. Motors need a rigid mounting structure and a drivetrain with reasonable resistance; adding more functions consumes more ports and battery capacity. Hubs and battery boxes also need to remain reachable, especially in a model intended for regular use.

Plan for maintenance: batteries eventually need replacement, cables can be displaced during rebuilding and app support may change as phones and operating systems are updated. Keep a record of which hub drives each motor or light, particularly in a large model with several ports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finally, distinguish documented capability from a guaranteed result. LEGO’s component pages establish what each part is designed to do and which pairings are specified, but they do not guarantee that every custom frame, gear ratio or existing set will have enough clearance or torque for a particular modification.

Frequently asked questions

Can I motorize a LEGO model without using the Powered Up app?

Yes, when the selected motor is compatible with a physical-control option such as Technic Battery Box 88015. Its switches provide direction control, so a phone is not required for that setup. App-only behaviors such as programmed sequences or sensor logic still require a supported Bluetooth control path.

Will adding more lights require a different hub?

It may, depending on how many ports your design uses and which hub the lights support. Hub 88012 has four input/output ports, while Hub 88009 has two, so count every motor and light connection before finalizing the layout. A port count alone does not override connector-generation compatibility.

Can a LEGO train use any Powered Up hub?

LEGO specifically identifies Hub 88009 for Train Motor 88011. That documentation is narrower than a general claim that every Powered Up hub supports every train configuration, so match the train motor and hub as specified and verify the current product guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if my phone cannot connect to a Powered Up hub?

Check that the device supports Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth 4.1 or higher, then confirm that the current Powered Up app recognizes the hub. If the device meets the requirement but pairing still fails, test the batteries, hub switch and cable connections before changing the model’s mechanical design.
