Build a small, multi-element team first, finish complete equipment-rank sets, and reserve magic crystals for the characters you actually use. In The Eminence in Shadow: Master of Garden, account level, rarity, equipment completion, character pieces, and awakening materials are linked progression gates. A focused core reaches useful power sooner than a roster-wide investment plan, while element coverage keeps one stage mechanic from stopping your story progress.
What efficient progression looks like
Efficient building is not the same as chasing the highest name on a tier list. Your early goal is a dependable squad that can clear the content you are currently playing, then a second layer of coverage for stages that punish a single element or role. Concentrate rank materials, equipment drops, character pieces, and magic crystals on units that appear in your regular parties. Bench characters can wait until your main teams have reached the next meaningful gate.
The game gives you several overlapping limits: character levels depend on both account level and rarity stage; each equipment rank requires a complete set of six pieces; and magic awakening consumes a fixed number of crystals per enhancement. Because stamina and upgrade materials are finite, spreading every resource across the entire roster delays the point at which any one team becomes reliable.
Start with one usable, multi-element squad
Cover the jobs a stage can demand
Begin with a frontline character that can absorb or reduce incoming damage, one or more damage dealers, and support or healing when the stage’s damage pattern requires it. A team that survives long enough to use its abilities is usually more valuable than a collection of fragile high-damage units that cannot finish a difficult wave. When comparing two damage dealers, first ask whether either one brings a needed element, control effect, or team benefit rather than looking only at a ranking label.

Why multiple elements are safer
The beginner guidance recommends a multi-element party. That is a strategic recommendation rather than a permanent best-team formula: encounters, event rules, and balance changes can reward different elements over time. Keep at least one practical alternative for stages that resist or punish your primary color. You do not need an equally developed roster in every element; one strong core plus a lightly maintained counter unit is a more efficient starting point than six half-built characters.
A practical first-team selection order
- Choose the character you can field consistently. A unit you can obtain pieces for and equip now is more useful than a theoretical upgrade that will remain locked for weeks.
- Add a frontline. If your first damage dealer is already durable, use the slot for utility; otherwise, make survival the next priority.
- Fill an element gap. Select a second attacker or support from a different element when the available options are close in power.
- Test the squad in the content you actually play. Story and general PvE may reward a different balance from events or PvP.
- Stop expanding when the team clears comfortably. Move the next materials into rank, equipment, and awakening on these same units before starting another project.
Use tier lists as dated filters, not permanent answers
Tier lists are snapshots of a patch, mode, and evaluator’s assumptions. Pocket Gamer’s current list was updated October 18, 2026 for version 4.12.1. That page places Alpha at the top of its general evaluation and identifies Rose Oriana as a top-tier tank. Those labels can help you shortlist candidates, but they do not override element requirements, your available character pieces, or the team you can equip immediately.
Pocket Tactics also cautions that buffs, nerfs, and newly released characters can change rankings. Recheck the patch version and publication date before rebuilding a team around a list. A unit ranked lower for general PvE may still be the correct choice for a particular event, a defensive role, or an element you lack.

That observation is useful in practice: a well-equipped, correctly positioned character often outperforms an allegedly superior unit left at low level, incomplete rank, or missing pieces. The Apple App Store listing similarly describes the party system as letting players “Build your dream party using any character from The Eminence in Shadow!” Treat both statements as support for experimenting within your resources, not as a reason to spend every scarce item on every new summon.

Five questions for two otherwise similar characters
- Role reliability: Which one performs its job without requiring a fragile or highly specific setup?
- Element coverage: Does one give you a counter option that your account currently lacks?
- Mode fit: Is your priority story and general PvE, a recurring event, or PvP?
- Investment access: Can you obtain character pieces through hard quests, shops, events, guild content, or duplicate summons?
- Team effect: Do equipment or awakening improvements help only that character, or also the rest of the party?
Understand level and rarity gates before spending materials
Account level and character level
A character’s maximum level is tied to your account level and the character’s rarity stage. Raising a unit repeatedly while the account cap is lower than the unit’s potential wastes the urgency of the upgrade: you may be paying for a short-lived increase instead of preparing the materials needed for the next gate. Advance your account through normal play, then raise the characters in your active squad to the highest level the current cap allows.
Rarity stages
The progression reference records five rarity stages: A, S, SS, SS+, and SS++. Rarity progression uses character pieces. The exact number of pieces and availability differ by character type, so inspect the live client for each unit rather than assuming every summon has the same path.

Where character pieces come from
Depending on rarity and character type, pieces can come from hard quests, shops, events, guild content, or duplicate summons. Before committing to a long-term build, identify the source you can access repeatedly. A unit whose pieces are available from a predictable hard quest may be a better second project than a stronger-looking character whose progress depends entirely on rare duplicates.
Equipment: complete the rank set before chasing marginal gains
Why six pieces come first
Each equipment rank requires six equipped pieces before the character can advance to the next rank. Equipment and rank-up materials are core progression items, and the beginner guidance directs players to farm them through quests. Leaving one slot empty can therefore hold back the entire rank even when the other five pieces are ready.
Efficient equipment sequence
- Equip all six slots on your active character. Use the best available piece in every slot rather than waiting for a perfect drop.
- Farm the quests that provide the current rank’s materials. Spend stamina on stages that advance the characters you actually field.
- Finish the complete set. Treat the sixth piece as the immediate target if the first five are already equipped.
- Advance the rank when the game allows it. A completed set is a more dependable power increase than a small substat improvement on one slot.
- Compare replacements afterward. When your inventory contains alternatives, check substats or special effects and replace the weakest piece without breaking the ability to complete the next rank.
This order avoids a common trap: farming an attractive upgrade for one slot while another active character remains at an incomplete rank. A complete current set gives you the rank-based progression sooner; optimization can follow when your stamina and drop table support it.

How to prioritize limited stamina
- Farm the rank material that unlocks the next advance for your main damage dealer or frontline.
- Finish a six-piece set before diverting stamina to a marginal replacement.
- When a stage is blocked by an element or survival check, farm the active unit that addresses that specific failure.
- Keep a small reserve of materials for a newly obtained character only after the core squad’s next rank is secured.
Magic awakening: a deliberate crystal decision
Magic awakening costs 10 magic crystals per enhancement. The documented maximum is five enhancements for standard pickup characters and three for limited pickup characters. That means a standard pickup can require up to 50 crystals for the recorded awakening track, while a limited pickup can require up to 30; these are totals derived from the stated per-step cost and maximum counts, not a promise that every character’s live screen is unchanged.

Who should receive crystals first
- Choose a core unit that appears in your main teams. A character used in story, events, or another mode gives the investment more opportunities to pay back.
- Check the awakening effect in the live client. Prefer effects that solve your team’s current weakness or improve the whole party.
- Confirm the character’s category and remaining steps. Standard and limited pickup ceilings differ.
- Spend in 10-crystal increments only when the next enhancement has a clear purpose. Keep enough currency for a future unit that better fits your elements or role coverage.
Do not awaken a bench character simply because you have reached the required amount. Awakening is permanent progression pressure on a scarce currency; rank and equipment farming are usually easier to redirect between units.
A resource plan that scales with your account
Phase 1: establish the core
Use normal quests to raise account level, identify one frontline, and field damage and support that cover more than one element. Equip every slot on those characters and farm the materials needed for their current rank. Your objective is functional clears, not a completed collection.
Phase 2: remove the first bottleneck
Look at why a stage fails. If the frontline falls first, improve that character’s level, rarity pieces, or equipment rank. If the timer expires, strengthen the main damage dealer. If the encounter punishes your element, build the least expensive counter unit that can be equipped and leveled from available resources.
Phase 3: add a second project
Only after the first squad is stable should you start a second team. Choose a character whose pieces and equipment materials are accessible through content you already clear. This keeps your stamina productive and gives you another option without weakening the original party.

Phase 4: optimize
Once active characters have complete ranks and appropriate levels, compare substats, special effects, and awakening value. Optimization is where a higher-tier candidate can overtake an earlier placeholder; before that point, completeness usually matters more than small statistical differences.

The Steam community hub can be useful for player guides and temporary rewards. Its current page highlights a new-player code guide that promises an SS-guaranteed summon ticket and 1,500 Phantasm Gems after the listed missions are completed. Confirm the code’s eligibility, mission requirements, and expiration inside the live client before planning your roster around it. A temporary reward should accelerate a plan you already understand, not determine your entire team.
Similarly, verify exact awakening costs, piece requirements, and equipment drop tables in the current game version. The progression systems can change with updates, and a guide written for an earlier patch may show a different ceiling or source.
Common progression mistakes and fixes
Investing in every new summon
Symptom: many characters have partial levels, incomplete equipment, and no clear team. Fix: pause new projects, select one active squad, and complete its six equipment slots and next rank before spending broadly again.
Building an all-one-element team
Symptom: one encounter or resistance mechanic stops otherwise strong damage. Fix: keep a second element represented by a usable attacker, support, or frontline; it can remain lightly invested until the counter is needed.

Chasing a tier-list position
Symptom: a highly ranked unit underperforms because it is underleveled, lacks pieces, or does not fit the stage. Fix: compare role reliability, element, mode, access to pieces, and team effects before replacing a working character.
Leaving one equipment slot empty
Symptom: five pieces are equipped but the next rank is unavailable. Fix: farm the missing sixth piece first, then evaluate replacements and substats.
Spending crystals on a bench unit
Symptom: your main team lacks awakening while crystals are tied to a character you rarely field. Fix: reserve the next 10-crystal increment for a core unit with a defined role in your current teams.
A compact decision checklist
- Does this character fill a role your current squad lacks?
- Does the character add an element you may need for another stage?
- Can you obtain the required pieces from a repeatable source?
- Can you complete all six equipment slots and the next rank?
- Is your account level high enough to use the character’s available level cap?
- Will the character appear in story, events, or another mode you actually play?
- Does the next 10-crystal awakening improve a problem your team currently has?
- Have you checked the tier-list patch date and the live client after recent balance changes?
What to do when the meta changes
Keep the progression fundamentals stable even when rankings move. A complete equipment set, accessible character pieces, a level appropriate to your account, and coverage across roles and elements remain useful after a balance patch. Reassess only the parts that changed: a buff may make an existing bench unit worth developing, a nerf may reduce the value of a future crystal spend, and a new character may fill a gap more cheaply than an older one. Rebuild gradually instead of abandoning a functioning team after every list update.
