Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRecording alone can feel awkward, and seeing the red recording indicator can make you freeze. You do not need to feel completely relaxed—or buy a better camera—before you begin. Use a phone, make the setup predictable, and practise with short recordings you can redo.
Start with a simple, familiar setup
Use the camera you already have, including a mobile phone. YouTube says a mobile device is a valid way to get started before investing in a standalone camera. Choose equipment according to the kind of videos you want to make, rather than treating a camera upgrade as a prerequisite for practising. YouTube’s video equipment tips explain the options.
Make the room comfortable
Choose a place where you can speak without feeling rushed or interrupted. Set aside enough time to arrange your phone, check the shot, and take a break if you need one. YouTube’s filming guidance recommends choosing a comfortable location, considering light and sound, and allowing extra time for setup and breaks—especially when filming away from home. YouTube’s filming tips cover these preparations.
Remove avoidable distractions
- Turn off phone notifications so an alert does not interrupt a take.
- Use soft, even light; a window can provide natural light. Avoid placing a bright window directly behind you.
- Keep yourself close to the phone’s microphone when practical.
- Record a brief test clip and check that your face is framed, the image is bright enough, and your words are intelligible.
YouTube’s mobile filming tips recommend soft, even lighting and getting close to the microphone. These checks are not a performance test: they help you avoid having to think about technical problems while speaking. Read YouTube’s tips for filming with mobile.

Choose notes that suit the video
You do not have to memorize a script word for word. Pick the least distracting way to cover what the video needs to say, then use it consistently for a practice take.
| Approach | Covering required points | How natural it may feel | Recovering after losing your place |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full script | Provides exact wording and a reliable order. | Can sound read aloud if you focus on the text rather than speaking to the viewer. | Find the last line you remember and continue, or pause and record that section again. |
| Short outline | Keeps key topics visible without prescribing every sentence. | Leaves room to speak in your own words. | Look at the next point and explain it simply. |
| No notes | Relies on memory, so it may be harder to cover a long list of details. | Can feel conversational if you already know the subject. | Pause, restate the point, or restart the short section. |
Vimeo’s creator guidance suggests knowing who the video is for, preparing what to say, breathing, and practising. A teleprompter is another optional aid for a scripted recording; it can anchor the words without requiring you to memorize them. Neither a teleprompter nor a particular note style is necessary, and there is no reason to assume either one will suit every speaker. See Vimeo’s video-creation tips.

Use a repeatable, low-stakes practice routine
Try this exercise before filming a full video. It is a practical way to apply preparation and practice guidance, not a guaranteed way to eliminate nerves or a prescribed amount of training.
- Choose one imagined viewer. Picture a specific person who would benefit from the video. Speak to that person rather than to an abstract audience.
- Pick one small topic. Limit the practice take to a single explanation or answer, rather than trying to deliver an entire video.
- Prepare a few points. Write a short outline or a script, depending on what you chose. Take a breath before you start.
- Record one short take. Keep going if you stumble. If you lose your place, pause, look at your notes if you have them, and continue.
- Review for one improvement only. Check whether the main point was clear, then choose one change for the next take—for example, slowing down or moving closer to the microphone. Do not turn the review into a search for every flaw.
- Record again, then stop. Apply that one change. When you have a usable take, move on; you do not need to wait for a take that feels perfect.
This review-and-repeat routine is a practical exercise, not a tested promise of a particular outcome. How much practice you need, and whether camera discomfort changes, will vary.

Improve sound without buying gear first
Start by testing the phone’s built-in microphone in the place where you intend to record. A quiet room and a closer speaking distance may be enough for the video. If you need to record from farther away, a wireless lavalier microphone is one option YouTube describes. Before buying an external microphone, confirm that it is compatible with your recording device; for a camera, check that it has an external-microphone port. No particular model is necessary to begin practising.

- You freeze as soon as recording starts: Begin with a short test or a single point instead of a complete video. Treat it as a practice take, not a final performance.
- You keep restarting after small mistakes: Pause and repeat only the sentence or section that needs another take. A stumble does not require you to start the whole video over.
- You sound stiff while reading: Try a short outline instead of a full script, or use the script as a prompt and look back toward the camera between lines.
- You lose your place: Use notes with clear points or headings. Pause, find the next point, and continue.
- You are distracted by the picture or sound: Check one technical issue at a time in a brief test clip—framing, light, then whether speech is clear—before attempting another take.
People sometimes describe speaking to a camera as awkward or say they freeze when recording. Those individual accounts are useful descriptions, not evidence of how common the experience is or a clinical measure. You do not need a diagnosis or a special purchase to try the practical adjustments above.
