Build LEGO PlayStation 72306 on a stable, uncluttered surface, use the LEGO Builder app to inspect the interior in 3D, and handle the Gran Turismo and Ape Escape scenes by their bases rather than their small scenery. Operate the Open and Power buttons only while the console is supported, insert the controller straight into its front port, and close the lid slowly after checking for protruding pieces.
For display, keep both dioramas inside for the cleanest near-1:1 console silhouette, remove them and place them beside the console for maximum visibility, or use a carefully balanced mixed arrangement. A case must exceed the model’s published dimensions and leave additional room for the open lid and any scenes displayed outside.
Know what you are building before you start
LEGO PlayStation 72306 is a 1,911-piece adult display model recreating the original PlayStation console and its controller. The finished console is over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep. Those measurements describe the assembled console itself; they are not a complete allowance for opening the lid, inserting the controller or displaying the removable scenes beside it.

(20 cm) high, 4.5 in. (12 cm) wide and 2.5 in. (7 cm) deep, including the stand
What is hidden inside
The Gran Turismo module contains a miniature track and cars. The Ape Escape module depicts an island scene and includes a swappable red or blue monkey-helmet light. Both modules are removable and can be customized with different elements. They can stay concealed inside the console or be displayed next to it.
Why the interior needs a different handling method
The console combines a moving lid, working buttons and removable interior assemblies. A small decorative part may look like a convenient grip but is not documented as one. LEGO does not publish a stress test, force limit or special removal tool for the dioramas, so the safest method is conservative handling: support the model on the work surface, hold a scene by its base or broad structural sections, and stop whenever a part binds.
Prepare a safe building area
Preparation prevents most damage because it keeps the console from being lifted, twisted or pressed against nearby objects while you work.
- Choose a rigid, level surface. A table that does not flex gives the console a stable base while you test the lid and buttons.
- Clear space on both sides and behind the model. The completed console is 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep, and the removable modules need a place to rest when they are outside the body.
- Use a light-colored sorting method. Shallow trays or bowls make small black, gray and colored pieces easier to identify without sweeping them across the work area.
- Keep the instruction device within reach. The LEGO Builder app supplies interactive 3D instructions that can be zoomed and rotated. Position the screen so you can inspect the interior without turning the partly built console in your hands.
- Keep drinks, heat sources and direct sunlight away. Loose pieces are easier to lose on a crowded surface, and heat or sunlight can harm LEGO bricks over time.
Build workflow that protects the hidden scenes
-
Build on the table, not in mid-air
Keep the growing console resting on the work surface whenever the instructions permit. Before turning it, clear the area where its edges will land. Avoid picking it up by the lid, Open or Power buttons, controller, or a partly installed diorama.
-
Use LEGO Builder’s 3D view for the interior
Open the official LEGO PlayStation instructions in LEGO Builder and zoom or rotate the model before inserting parts inside the console. Interior geometry can be difficult to read from a single fixed view. Confirm the orientation of a wall, hinge-side element or scene base in the three-dimensional view before pressing it into place.
-
Sort and install interior parts before decorative scenery
Follow the app’s sequence rather than installing loose scenery as soon as you find it. Broad structural pieces should be seated first; small track, island and character details should remain in their trays until the surrounding structure is secure. This reduces the chance that a decorative element becomes a lever or gets trapped under a larger assembly.
-
Treat each diorama as a removable module
When the instructions call for a Gran Turismo or Ape Escape scene to go in or out, hold the module by its base or another broad structural section. Keep fingers away from small cars, track details, the island scenery and the swappable monkey-helmet light. Do not pull on a single character, tree, vehicle or lamp to free the module.

Test the moving features with the console supported
With the model flat on the table, press the documented Open and Power buttons gently. The buttons should be operated as controls, not used as carrying handles. If the lid or a button feels obstructed, stop and inspect the surrounding build instead of increasing pressure.
-
Connect the controller straight into the front
Align the controller plug with the front connection and push straight while supporting the console body. The official product description confirms the plug-in feature but gives no force specification, so do not twist, lever or side-load the connector.
-
Check the scenes before closing the lid
Look across the entire lid path. No loose track, car, island element or other part should project into the opening. Lower the lid slowly; if you feel resistance, open it again and find the obstruction rather than forcing the hinge or pressing harder.
How to remove and reinstall the hidden scenes

-
Use both hands where possible. Support the module’s base or broad frame rather than its scenery.
-
Lift or slide it along the path shown in LEGO Builder. Keep the movement level and controlled; do not rock the module against the console walls.
-
Set the scene on a clear, padded-free surface that will not catch small pieces. LEGO does not specify a special removal tool, so use your hands rather than improvised prying objects.
Reinstalling a module
-
Inspect the receiving space for a stray piece before lowering the module into it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Hold the module by its base and align its locating features with the opening shown in the 3D instructions.
-
Lower it evenly. If one side seats and the other does not, lift it back out and correct the alignment instead of pressing diagonally.
-
After both scenes are installed, operate the lid once with no force and verify that the scenes remain below its path.
Operate the console without stressing the mechanisms
Opening and closing
Rest the console on the table, place a fingertip on the documented control, and use only the pressure needed to activate it. Keep your other hand near the body for stability, not on the lid edge. Close the lid in a slow, level motion. Resistance is a stop signal: reopen it, inspect for a displaced scene or loose element, and consult the 3D view for the intended arrangement.
Using the controller connection
Support the front and underside of the console while connecting or disconnecting the controller. Keep the plug aligned with the port. A straight insertion protects the connection better than pushing from one side. Because no force specification is published, never test the port by wiggling the plug or hanging the model from the controller.
Switching the Ape Escape light
The Ape Escape diorama has a swappable red or blue monkey-helmet light. Remove the module or hold its broad structure securely before changing the light element. Avoid pulling on adjacent island details, and confirm that the replacement is fully seated before returning the scene to the console.
Choose a display arrangement
There is no single correct presentation. The best arrangement depends on whether you value the original console outline, immediate visibility of the game scenes, or frequent changes between the two.

| Arrangement | Hidden-scene visibility | Clearance and stability | Dust and sunlight exposure | Switching effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Clean console Both dioramas inside; lid closed |
Low; the scenes are concealed | Smallest footprint, but the lid still needs room to open when you change the display | Best protection when a case is used and the lid is closed | Requires opening the console and removing modules to show the scenes |
| Storytelling Both dioramas beside the console |
High; the Gran Turismo track, cars and Ape Escape island are visible | Largest footprint; provide stable positions for the console and both modules | More surfaces are exposed, so dust and accidental contact are greater concerns | Fastest way for visitors to see both scenes, but reinstalling takes care |
| Mixed One scene inside and one outside |
Medium; one scene is immediately visible | Requires checking that the open lid and removed module do not make the arrangement unstable | Exposure differs between the two scenes | Useful for rotating emphasis, but it is an editorial arrangement rather than an official configuration claim |
Clean-console display
Keep both modules installed and close the lid to emphasize the original PlayStation’s near-1:1 silhouette. This is the most compact option and the simplest choice for a narrow shelf. Before closing the lid for a long period, perform the obstruction check described in the build workflow.
Storytelling display
Remove both modules and place them beside the console so visitors can see the miniature Gran Turismo track and cars, the Ape Escape island and the chosen red or blue monkey-helmet light. Arrange the modules on a level surface where their bases cannot be nudged by the controller or by the case door.
Mixed display
A mixed arrangement can keep one scene inside while the other sits outside. Treat this as a personal display choice, not a manufacturer-documented mode. Verify that the open lid is supported and that the removed module has a stable position before leaving the model unattended.
Selecting a shelf or display case
The published console dimensions are the minimum starting point, not the required internal size of a case. Choose internal dimensions larger than the full assembled console in every direction, then add clearance for the open lid and for any module placed beside the console. A case that fits the closed console may be too shallow or too low for an open, storytelling arrangement.

-
Measure the maximum width, depth and height of that arrangement with the lid in its intended position. For a display that changes modes, measure the open-lid and scenes-outside position as well.
-
Compare those measurements with the case’s internal, not external, dimensions. Account for shelves, door frames and any raised base inside the case.
-
Leave additional hand room so you can remove a module without scraping it against the cover. The exact margin depends on the case design and your chosen arrangement; LEGO does not publish a case size certified for set 72306.

What a case should provide
- A transparent cover: LEGO describes transparent-cover display cases as helping keep models free from dust and damage, but the available information does not certify a particular case as fitting this set.
- Stable support: The base should not rock when you press a button or remove a scene.
- Access for changes: A door or removable cover should let you reach the lid and module bases without pulling on small scenery.
- Protection from direct sun and heat: A clear cover does not prevent sunlight or heat from reaching the model, so placement still matters.
Protect the model from heat, sunlight and moisture
LEGO advises storing bricks in a dry place away from heat and direct sunlight, and says temperatures above 40°C can make bricks brittle while sunlight can discolor them. Keep the case or shelf away from radiators, heaters, hot windowsills and other locations that can exceed that limit. Avoid damp storage areas where condensation or persistent moisture could collect on the model or case.
These recommendations apply to the console and its removable scenes. A closed display case reduces dust and accidental touches, but it does not override the need for a dry, shaded, temperature-controlled location.

Clean the console and dioramas safely
For LEGO pieces, the LEGO Group recommends hand washing with water no hotter than 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge. It warns against dishwashers, washing machines, ovens, microwaves and hair dryers, and advises avoiding direct sunlight while pieces dry.
-
Remove the controller and, where practical, take out the dioramas so you can reach surfaces without forcing the lid or pressing scenery.

Use a soft cloth or sponge with water at or below 40°C. Work gently over accessible surfaces rather than scrubbing small details.
-
Rinse only as needed and allow pieces to dry away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not use a hair dryer or another forced-heat method.
-
Reinstall each dry module by its base, inspect the lid path and test the moving features on the table.
Never put the assembled model or its pieces in a dishwasher, washing machine, oven or microwave. Those appliances and high heat can deform, weaken or scatter the parts.

Troubleshoot resistance, looseness and display problems
The lid will not close
Stop immediately. Open the lid, remove any scene that is in the way, and inspect for a loose car, track element, island detail or other part projecting above the intended interior level. Use LEGO Builder’s rotated view to compare the interior with the instructions. Do not press the lid down to force a fit.
A diorama feels stuck
Keep the console on the work surface and hold the module by its base or broad frame. Check that you are following the correct removal direction and that no loose piece has fallen into the receiving area. Avoid levering against the console wall and do not pull on scenery or the monkey-helmet light.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The controller does not seat smoothly
Withdraw it, support the console body and realign the plug with the front port. Insert it straight without twisting or side pressure. Since LEGO gives no force specification, treat repeated resistance as a reason to inspect the build rather than to push harder.
A scene becomes loose after handling
Place it on the table and compare its structure with the 3D instructions. Reattach only the piece that is visibly disconnected, using broad structural sections for support. Do not carry the scene by the loose area until it is secure.
The display is unstable in its case
Remove the modules and controller, then test the console alone on the shelf. Reposition the base or use a case with a level interior surface. Add the scenes one at a time and check whether the lid, module bases or case door touch one another. The published dimensions are not a substitute for checking the actual internal layout of a case.
Dust or discoloration appears
Move the display away from direct sunlight and heat, then clean it by hand with water no hotter than 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge. Keep the case closed when the model is not being handled, while remembering that a transparent cover does not block all sunlight or heat.

For a short move across a room, close the lid, remove the controller and support the console from underneath with both hands. If you are transporting the model farther, remove both dioramas and pack them so their bases and small scenery cannot collide with the console or one another. Keep the parts dry, shaded and below the temperature limit LEGO specifies.
When you unpack the model, inspect the lid path, controller connection and each scene before reinstalling anything. Rebuild or reseat a loose detail using the interactive instructions rather than trying to hide the problem inside the closed console.
A practical pre-display checklist
- The console rests on a rigid, level surface.
- The LEGO Builder instructions are available for checking interior alignment.
- Both dioramas are held by their bases or broad structural sections.
- No small scenery protrudes into the lid path.
- The Open and Power buttons work without excessive pressure.
- The controller plug is aligned straight and is not supporting the model.
- The chosen case exceeds the assembled arrangement’s internal measurements and allows access for changes.
- The display is dry, shaded and away from heat above 40°C.
- Cleaning, if needed, uses hand washing with water no hotter than 40°C and a soft cloth or sponge.
Following those checks lets you change between the concealed console and the two-game display without treating the moving parts or hidden scenes as handles.
