Build the app as a recognition pipeline, not as a single magic camera feature: capture a clear photo, look for a barcode and readable title, search a catalog you are authorized to use, then show likely matches for the user to confirm. Add visual machine-learning recognition only if those signals are not enough and you can obtain a representative, rights-cleared set of game-box photos.
What the app needs to identify
A photo-recognition feature has two separate jobs: infer which game is pictured and retrieve the right catalog record. Apple Vision provides building blocks for text recognition, barcode and QR detection, image classification, and custom Core ML requests. Its observations can include confidence scores and image locations. Those are general framework capabilities; they do not mean a built-in model already recognizes board-game boxes.
The catalog is a separate dependency. It must map a title or product code to a game record, and it must be suitable for your app’s coverage, licensing, and update needs. Keep catalog identity separate from image assets: permission to query a record does not automatically grant permission to reuse its cover image.
Which recognition method should you build first?

Apple documents general Vision capabilities, and Google’s ML Kit barcode guidance emphasizes suitable image input for barcode detection. Neither establishes a head-to-head accuracy result for identifying board-game boxes. Treat the table as an implementation decision guide, not a promise about recognition rates.

How to build the first working version
- Create photo intake. Build a Swift camera or photo-selection flow. Preserve the image’s orientation when passing it to recognition components; a rotated or incorrectly oriented image can undermine otherwise usable input.
- Run text and barcode recognition. Use OCR to extract title-like text and barcode detection to look for product codes. Keep the results and their confidence information as evidence rather than treating either signal as a confirmed identity.
- Normalize the title before searching. Clean up punctuation and spacing, and where appropriate separate likely title text from publisher or edition details. Preserve the original recognized text so the user can see and correct what the app read.
- Query an authorized catalog. Search by recognized title and, when available, a detected code. Keep the source record and the evidence used to find it so that you can explain why a candidate appeared.
- Show ranked candidates for confirmation. Present plausible matches with enough distinguishing information to tell apart editions, expansions, or localized versions. Let the user confirm or correct the result; do not silently assign a game when the evidence is uncertain.
- Handle corrections deliberately. Decide whether corrections stay on the device or are retained elsewhere, and make that behavior fit your privacy and data policy. Do not treat user-submitted photos or corrections as training data without an appropriate basis and disclosure.
How to use BoardGameGeek as a catalog
BoardGameGeek documents search and data access through its XML API, but access requires registration and authorization. That makes it a possible catalog dependency, not an automatic or complete visual-matching dataset. Before designing around it, verify that its available records meet your coverage and data-use needs.
For a public-facing app that uses BoardGameGeek XML API data, its documentation requires displaying the “Powered by BGG” logo linked back to BoardGameGeek. A commercial app using that data requires a commercial license; the applicable availability, cost, and scope need confirmation for the specific product. BoardGameGeek’s XML API guide is version-dated July 2, 2025; its policies can change, and the organization says it does not provide technical support for the XML API.

Settle authorization, permitted uses, attribution, rate limits, and how you will handle catalog updates before launch. Also review image rights independently: API access or a game record should not be taken as permission to package or display every associated image.
When a custom visual model is worth the work
Move beyond OCR and codes when they leave too many boxes unidentified or produce too many ambiguous candidates. A visual model can be a useful additional signal, but it requires more than collecting a handful of front-cover images. You need permission to use the images and an evaluation set that reflects the photos people will actually submit.

- Include alternate editions, expansions, localized packaging, and visually similar titles.
- Test wear, glare, perspective, cropping, and varied lighting rather than only clean, straight-on box art.
- Keep evaluation photos separate from training examples so results reflect performance on images the model has not seen.
- Use the model to rank candidates or narrow a search unless testing supports a more decisive result.

Measure the whole user journey, not just whether an image model returns a label. Track whether the correct game appears among the candidates, how often users have to correct the title, and where failures occur: unreadable text, missing codes, absent catalog records, or confusion between editions. Evaluate separately across languages and photo conditions relevant to your audience.

Keep false matches visible in your testing. A confident-looking but wrong edition can be more harmful than an explicit “couldn’t identify this” result. When the available evidence is weak, offer a manual search or let the user enter the title instead of inventing certainty.

What to decide before release
- Data rights: Confirm permission for catalog queries, retained records, and any images displayed or stored.
- Catalog behavior: Decide what happens when a search returns no result, duplicate titles, or an outdated record.
- Privacy: State whether photos are processed on-device or sent elsewhere, how long they are retained, and whether corrections are saved.
- Failure handling: Provide a retry with clearer photo guidance, manual title search, and a way to report a missing or incorrect match.
- Maintenance: Plan for catalog-policy changes, authorization requirements, and ongoing data updates rather than assuming the initial integration will remain unchanged.
