First identify the exact cell model and its charging limits, then choose a charger design that matches those limits and provides appropriate temperature monitoring and fault handling. If you only need to charge removable cells, a compatible finished multi-bay charger is usually the more practical choice.
What a charging grid should do
A charging grid is a multi-bay system for charging cells or packs. For removable 18650 cells charged individually, each bay needs a suitable controlled charging path, along with a way to detect and indicate relevant faults. A shared output does not become a safe multi-cell charger merely because it has several holders attached.
Charging limits are cell-specific. The cell manufacturer’s documentation determines the permitted charge voltage, current, and temperature range; the charger design must implement limits and behavior that fit those requirements. Without the exact cell manufacturer and model, there is no responsible universal current or temperature setting to recommend.
Choose the right architecture before choosing parts
Removable cells charged independently
For a grid that accepts individual removable cells, use separate controlled charging channels or a documented multi-bay design with per-bay monitoring. Each position should have an appropriate way to report its status and handle a fault rather than relying on a single indicator for the whole grid.

Microchip’s MCP1630 Li-Ion Multi-Bay Battery Charger Reference Design documents a two-bay design for single-cell lithium-ion packs, with additional bays possible by daisy-chaining boards. The design describes constant-current/constant-voltage charging, preconditioning, cell-temperature and battery-fault monitoring, pack insertion/removal detection, and bay status and fault indications. This demonstrates a multi-bay architecture; it is not a turnkey schematic for every 18650 cell or a guarantee that a home-built assembly is safe.
A purpose-built managed battery pack
A managed multi-cell pack is a different project from a grid of removable cells. Its battery-management system, charger, pack configuration, wiring, and protection must be designed to work together. Do not treat instructions for charging an installed battery bank as approval to wire loose 18650 cells in parallel.

Victron’s Lithium Battery Smart installation guidance applies to its managed battery systems and says, “Always use a BMS-controlled charger when individually charging lithium batteries.” Its guidance on charging a single battery or a parallel-connected bank is scoped to that system; it does not establish a safe method for paralleling loose cells in a DIY grid.
What the reference designs establish—and what they do not
| Design | Scope and documented features | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Microchip MCP1630 multi-bay reference design | Two single-cell lithium-ion pack bays; 10–30 V input; CC-CV charging; temperature and fault monitoring; bay status; additional bays by daisy-chaining. Its page lists factory example settings of 200 mA preconditioning, 2 A constant-current fast charge, 4.2 V constant-voltage charge, and 100 mA termination. | Those are settings of this particular reference design, not universal settings for 18650 cells. Review its complete documentation and confirm suitability for the exact cell before using or adapting it. Microchip |
| Texas Instruments BQ25170 | A single-cell charger IC example. TI lists selectable Li-ion regulation settings from 4.05 V to 4.4 V, programmable current from 10 mA to 800 mA, thermistor monitoring, and precharge, constant-current fast charge, and voltage regulation. Listed protections include output overvoltage, overcurrent, thermal regulation/shutdown, and short circuit. | These are component capabilities, not a finished multi-bay charger or proof that a complete circuit is suitable for a particular cell. Texas Instruments |
| Analog Devices DS2770 reference design | A single-cell Li-ion battery monitor and charger example. It describes a 4.2 V pack and trickle charging below 3.0 V before fast charging. | The design notes that the charge source must limit current because its switching transistor provides a low-impedance path to the battery. Its example values are not a generic recipe for unknown cells. Analog Devices |
The examples illustrate different levels of a design: an IC can provide charging functions, while the surrounding circuit and system still need suitable input handling, thermal sensing, fault behavior, bay control, and documentation. Do not copy example values into a new build without checking the cell datasheet and the full charger design.

Plan the build in this order
- Identify the cell. Record the manufacturer and exact model. Obtain the manufacturer’s datasheet and use its stated charging voltage, current, and temperature limits. If the model cannot be identified, do not guess at settings.
- Define what the bays will charge. Decide whether each position charges one removable cell independently or whether the project is for a purpose-built managed pack. These are distinct architectures and require different design decisions.
- Select a documented charger design. Check that its supported cell count and chemistry, input range, charge control, termination behavior, thermal monitoring, and fault response fit the application and the cell documentation.
- Work out bay-level control and indication. For independently charged cells, establish how each position is controlled, how insertion or removal is detected if relevant, and how a fault is indicated or isolated. A multi-bay reference design can inform this plan, but its user guide and schematics are part of the design review.
- Design the physical and electrical connections. Confirm polarity, wiring capacity, short-circuit prevention, and any required protection or fusing from the actual circuit design and applicable requirements. Victron’s advice to check polarity, avoid shorts, and fuse positive battery-bank wiring is for its installed battery-system context; it is not a fuse specification for a different DIY circuit.
- Commission against the documentation. Follow the selected charger design’s instructions and the cell manufacturer’s limits. There is no universal commissioning test protocol established for every home-built 18650 grid, so do not substitute an invented procedure for the relevant documentation.
Should you build or buy?
For routine charging of removable cells, compare a finished compatible multi-bay charger with the work and design responsibility of building a grid. Check supported cell chemistry and charge voltage, current settings, whether bays are controlled independently, temperature sensing, fault and status indication, termination behavior, input requirements, and the availability of clear user documentation.
A DIY build makes sense only when you can verify the cell requirements and review the complete charger design, including its bay behavior and protections. A charger IC such as the BQ25170 is a component in a custom design, not a finished charging grid. For a ready-to-use charger, select a product whose documented compatibility matches the exact cells you own.
