For one video, use OBS’s Media Source with Loop enabled. For an ordered playlist of several files, use VLC Video with Loop Playlist on and Shuffle Playlist off. Add Advanced Scene Switcher only when you need OBS to change between separate scenes or trigger other actions automatically; it is not required for a basic playlist.
This guide explains how to loop a video in OBS, loop a playlist in OBS, and automatically switch OBS scenes after a video ends. These local playback settings are separate from configuring and starting the YouTube encoder stream.
Choose the right OBS approach
| What you want | Use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one video | Media Source with Loop enabled | Simple and does not require VLC, but plays one file. |
| Loop several files from a list | VLC Video with Loop Playlist enabled | Supports a file playlist and shuffle control; requires VLC installed. |
| Cycle between scenes or trigger conditional actions | Advanced Scene Switcher macros | More flexible, but requires additional setup and compatible versions. |
OBS Project describes VLC Video as a source that can create a playlist of items, unlike Media Source. See the official Media Sources documentation for the source controls and format details. That documentation is dated January 11, 2022, so if labels differ, check the controls in your installed OBS release.
Prepare your clips and scene
- Decide what should repeat. Choose one looping file, a playlist of files in a fixed order, or a cycle among separately composed scenes.
- Check your media files. The OBS Media Sources documentation lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported video formats, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among supported audio formats for Media Source.
- Open the scene you want to build. In OBS, a scene’s output is composed of sources. Use the + control in the Sources dock to add the appropriate source. See OBS Project’s Sources Guide.
- Check VLC before choosing VLC Video. VLC Video depends on VLC being installed. OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; a missing source or a source that does not work as expected may be an installation or architecture mismatch.
Loop one video with Media Source
- In the target scene, go to the Sources dock and select +.
- Choose Media Source and create a new source or select an existing one.
- Choose the local video file in the source properties.
- Enable Loop. This repeats the file after playback completes.
- Consider Restart playback when source becomes active separately. That setting starts playback again when the source becomes visible in the current scene; it is not the same as looping at the end of the file.
- Confirm the video, scene composition, and audio in OBS’s local preview.
Use Media Source when you need one file to repeat. It does not create a multi-file playlist.

Loop an ordered playlist with VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS; OBS Project specifically requires 64-bit VLC when running 64-bit OBS.
- In the target scene, select + in the Sources dock and choose VLC Video.
- Add the media files to the source playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist so the list repeats after it reaches the end.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off if the files must play in the order you specified. Turn it on only if you want the order randomized.
- Preview the list locally and check the file order, video framing, and audio before configuring the YouTube stream.
OBS’s documented defaults for VLC Video are Loop Playlist on and Shuffle Playlist off. Check the source properties rather than relying on defaults if a particular sequence matters. The documentation establishes playlist and loop controls, not a guarantee of gapless transitions between files.
Automatically switch scenes with Advanced Scene Switcher
Use the plugin when a video sequence needs to move among scenes with different layouts or when you need conditional automation beyond a playlist source. A typical cycle is scene A, then scene B, then scene C, then back to scene A. Each macro uses a condition to determine when an action should occur and an action to switch scenes.

- Check the plugin’s current compatibility information before installing or updating it. The Advanced Scene Switcher resource listing currently identifies version 1.36.1, a minimum of OBS Studio 31.1.1, and Windows, macOS, and Linux support; its listed update date is August 7, 2026. Details can change, so consult the Advanced Scene Switcher resource listing and its maintained wiki before proceeding.
- Install a plugin version compatible with your OBS version, then open Tools → Advanced Scene Switcher and ensure the plugin is running.
- Create a macro for each transition. Give each macro a condition that represents when its scene should hand off, then add a switch-scene action for the destination scene.
- Build the cycle deliberately: for example, a condition for the end of scene A switches to B; a condition for B switches to C; and a condition for C switches back to A. The exact condition and controls available can depend on the installed plugin version.
- Preview the entire sequence locally. Confirm the transitions, scene contents, and audio before going live.
Advanced Scene Switcher is conditional macro automation, not the basic playlist source itself. For an illustrative sequence of duration conditions and scene-switch actions, see this third-party walkthrough; treat its UI details as version-dependent and rely on the maintained plugin resource for current compatibility information.
Configure YouTube Live separately
A loop in OBS controls local source playback; it does not start or configure your public YouTube stream. After building and previewing the scene or playlist, configure the encoder stream separately in YouTube Live. Follow YouTube’s current Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder instructions for creating the live stream and connecting an encoder. Starting a local loop alone does not establish YouTube’s live state.

Before broadcasting, confirm that the selected source and audio are the ones you intend to send, and review YouTube’s requirements for the content you plan to stream. OBS loop and scene automation controls do not determine whether material is authorized for use or meets YouTube’s policies.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The video stops at the end. For a single clip, open its Media Source properties and enable Loop. For multiple clips, check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source.
- The files play in an unexpected order. Check the order in the VLC Video playlist and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off when you need a fixed sequence.
- VLC Video is unavailable or does not work. Confirm that VLC is installed. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC as specified by OBS Project.
- A clip restarts when a scene becomes visible. Review Restart playback when source becomes active in Media Source properties. It controls playback when the source becomes active, while Loop repeats at the end.
- The plugin’s controls or behavior do not match a guide. Check the installed Advanced Scene Switcher version and its compatibility with OBS, then consult the current resource listing and maintained wiki. Third-party walkthroughs may reflect older UI details.
- The preview loops, but YouTube is not live. The local OBS playback loop does not configure or start the YouTube encoder stream. Complete the separate YouTube Live setup and verify the encoder connection there.
- Files change with a visible pause or imperfect handoff. The cited OBS documentation establishes looping and playlist controls, not gapless playback. Do not assume a loop setting guarantees seamless transitions.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera.
