To build a YouTube Live loop from videos with mismatched resolutions, set a single canvas and output resolution in OBS, add the clips to a looping VLC Video playlist, then choose how each clip fits that frame. OBS—not YouTube—controls whether clips are letterboxed, cropped, or stretched. Test the complete playlist before broadcasting.
1. Choose one frame for the whole stream
In OBS, open Settings → Video. Set Base (Canvas) Resolution for the layout you will compose, and Output (Scaled) Resolution for the encoded stream sent to YouTube. The canvas is the workspace for arranging sources; the output setting determines the stream’s dimensions. A common 16:9 example is 1920×1080, but choose a resolution your production and upload connection can support. OBS explains the distinction in its overview guide.
Keep the output dimensions fixed even if the playlist clips have different pixel dimensions. Those differences are properties of the inputs; OBS places each source within the same production frame.
2. Add and loop the video playlist
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Create or select a scene for the broadcast.
- Add a VLC Video source to that scene and select the local clips in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist and disable Shuffle Playlist for a predictable sequence. OBS documents these controls in its Media Sources guide.
- If you only need to repeat one file, use an ordinary Media Source and enable its Loop option instead.
3. Choose how each clip fits the frame
Resolution and aspect ratio are different: two clips can have different pixel dimensions but the same aspect ratio. Your framing choice determines whether the full image remains visible, bars appear, edges are lost, or the image is distorted.

| OBS framing choice | What viewers see | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Fit to Screen | The entire image, with its proportions preserved | May leave bars when the clip and canvas have different aspect ratios |
| Crop to fill | A full canvas without bars | Some image edges are removed |
| Stretch to Screen | A full canvas without bars | Can warp the image’s geometry; OBS generally does not recommend stretching when aspect ratio matters |
Use OBS source transforms and sizing controls to apply the framing. Check every playlist item in the actual scene: a crop that works for one clip may cut off important content in another. OBS’s Sources Guide and Aspect Ratio Guide explain source sizing and distortion.
4. Configure OBS for YouTube Live
In OBS’s streaming settings, choose a YouTube-supported ingest protocol and encoder configuration. YouTube’s current general guidance includes RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; YouTube recommends RTMPS. It also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than 4 seconds apart. Follow the settings available in your OBS encoder and YouTube Live Control Room for the protocol and codec you select. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

H.264 bitrate examples
For H.264, YouTube’s encoder guidance accessed in 2026 lists these examples:
| Output | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are H.264 recommendations for the specified resolution and frame rate, not universal values for every codec or stream. Check YouTube’s current table when configuring the broadcast. Leave about 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream bitrate, as YouTube advises; account for a backup stream too if you use one. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

5. Test the full loop before going public
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and preview the incoming stream before making it public.
- Test representative clips, especially those with different aspect ratios, to verify their crop or fit.
- Check movement and audio, including transitions and the first and last frames of each item.
- Start the stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring audio and video quality.
YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into playback formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not make the clips’ composition consistent: set framing in OBS before the stream reaches YouTube. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance and Manage live stream settings.
Common problems and fixes
- Bars appear around a clip: Fit to Screen preserves the whole image, so bars can appear when its aspect ratio differs from the canvas. Use crop-to-fill if losing the edges is acceptable.
- A clip looks stretched: Replace Stretch to Screen with Fit to Screen or an intentional crop; stretching can distort proportions.
- Some clips are framed badly: Review each item in the playlist. A single framing choice may not suit every clip, so adjust the source transforms as needed.
- The VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS; 64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC.
- The sequence plays in the wrong order or repeats unpredictably: Confirm the playlist order, enable Loop Playlist, and turn off Shuffle Playlist.
- YouTube reports stream-health or quality issues: Check the selected output resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance, and make sure upload bandwidth has the recommended headroom.
