A useful market watchlist is not one long ticker list. Build three separate views—earnings, commodities and upcoming IPOs—then add a market-context view for holidays, early closes, options expirations and index rebalances. Each row should show what the instrument or event is, when the information was obtained, how certain the date is and when you will check it again.
This structure keeps an estimated IPO date from looking like a confirmed event, prevents a futures quote from being mistaken for a spot price, and makes stale earnings dates visible. It is a monitoring system, not a list of trade recommendations.
Start with four views instead of one crowded list
Create four tabs in a spreadsheet, database or watchlist application. The first three hold the events and instruments you are tracking; the fourth explains why a date or price may behave differently on a particular session.
| View | Purpose | Minimum fields |
|---|---|---|
| Earnings | Track scheduled company results and the certainty of each date. | Company, ticker, fiscal quarter, expected report date, confirmed or estimated status, before-open or after-close timing when disclosed, source, retrieval timestamp and next review date. |
| Commodities | Track a precisely identified spot quote or futures contract. | Commodity, spot or futures designation, exchange, contract month, price, unit, volume, open interest and timestamp. |
| Upcoming IPOs | Follow an issuer from filing through pricing and listing. | Issuer, exchange, filing link or identifier, expected pricing window, expected listing date, status and last filing review. |
| Market context | Explain sessions in which trading hours, liquidity or settlement can differ. | Event type, date, affected market, open or close adjustment, source and review timestamp. |
Keep the source and retrieval time beside every volatile value. A date without that context is difficult to audit and easy to misread.

Choose a workspace and a consistent status vocabulary
A spreadsheet is sufficient for a personal list; a database is preferable when several people edit rows or when you need a history of changes. Whatever the tool, use the same column names and status values in every view.
Recommended status values
- Confirmed: the issuer, exchange or other authoritative source has stated the date or event.
- Estimated: a calendar or market-data page has published a provisional date that has not been confirmed by the issuer or a filing.
- Filed: an IPO issuer has made a relevant regulatory filing, but pricing or listing is not final.
- Priced: the IPO price has been announced; the first trading date can still change.
- Listed: trading has begun on the stated exchange.
- Cancelled, withdrawn or postponed: retain the row and record the change rather than deleting the history.
- Stale: the next scheduled review passed without a fresh check.
Do not use a blank status to mean “probably current.” A blank is an unclassified record and should be corrected before the row is used.
Record time in a single convention
Store retrieval timestamps in Coordinated Universal Time and display a local-time column when necessary. Keep the time zone attached to an earnings release time or exchange session; “before open” in one region can occur during the prior calendar day in another.

Build the earnings view
Earnings calendars answer two different questions: which companies are expected to report, and how reliable is the stated date? Your columns should preserve both.
Fields and why they matter
| Field | What to record | Why it belongs |
|---|---|---|
| Company and ticker | Legal or commonly used company name and the current ticker. | Tickers can change, and similar names can cause a mistaken match. |
| Fiscal quarter | The quarter being reported, not merely the calendar month. | Companies use different fiscal calendars. |
| Expected report date | The date shown by the calendar, with its certainty status. | Estimated dates move frequently. |
| Timing | Before open, after close or an exact time when disclosed. | Market reaction and your preparation window depend on the session boundary. |
| Source | The page or filing from which the row was obtained. | It allows a later reviewer to verify the entry. |
| Retrieved at | Date and time of the check. | It establishes how old the information is. |
| Next review | The date on which you will check the source again. | It prevents an unchanged row from being treated as current indefinitely. |
Populate the first queue
- Open Nasdaq Market Activity and use its earnings section to create an initial queue of upcoming reports. That page also shows previously reported earnings, which can help you identify whether a row is an upcoming event or an old result.
- Enter the fiscal quarter and the calendar’s date exactly as displayed. Mark the date estimated unless the company has separately confirmed it.
- Copy any before-open or after-close designation. If no timing is disclosed, write “not stated” rather than inferring it from another quarter.
- Save the page name, retrieval timestamp and next review date in the same row.
- When the company publishes an investor-relations announcement or regulatory filing, update the status to confirmed, preserve the former estimate in a change log and record the new retrieval time.
Set a review cadence
Review each earnings row before the next scheduled date. Review sooner when the company has a history of moving dates, when a holiday changes the trading week or when an official announcement contradicts the calendar. If the review date passes, mark the row stale until you check it again.
Handle timing ambiguity
“Before open” and “after close” are session labels, not guarantees that a release will arrive at a particular minute. If an issuer gives an exact time, store it with the stated time zone. If the issuer gives only a date, leave the timing field as not stated and do not convert an estimate into a precise appointment.

Build the commodities view without mixing spot and futures
A commodity name alone is not an instrument definition. First decide whether you are tracking a spot quote or a futures contract, then capture the contract details needed to identify that quote.
Spot versus futures
A spot quote refers to the price for immediate delivery or the relevant cash market. A futures contract is an agreement to buy or sell a specified quantity at a specified price on a future date. The contract’s exchange, delivery specification, contract month and unit determine what the quoted number represents.
| Column | Entry guidance |
|---|---|
| Commodity | Use the standardized commodity name. |
| Instrument type | Write spot or futures; do not leave this implied. |
| Exchange | Record the venue that lists the quote or contract. |
| Contract month | Required for futures; include the year and the contract code when available. |
| Price | Store the number exactly as displayed, including decimal precision. |
| Unit | Record the quotation unit, such as a currency amount per specified physical unit. |
| Volume | Capture the source’s volume figure and whether it is delayed. |
| Open interest | Record outstanding contracts when the source provides it. |
| Timestamp | Use the quote’s timestamp, not only the time you opened the page. |
Use exchange specifications as the reference record
- Start with CME contract specifications or the specifications page of the relevant regulated exchange.
- Record the contract size, price quotation, minimum tick, delivery or settlement method and trading schedule if supplied. These details explain how a one-tick move translates into a monetary change.
- Choose the contract month you actually intend to monitor. Label a continuous or front-month series as such; do not silently replace one month with another at rollover.
- Capture delayed open, high, low, volume and active-contract information when the exchange page identifies those fields as delayed.
- Save the quote timestamp and mark the row delayed when the feed is not real time.
Read volume and open interest together
Volume counts contracts traded during a period; open interest counts contracts that remain open. They answer different questions and should not be substituted for each other. Nasdaq’s futures education materials also identify exchange volume, open interest and the CFTC Commitments of Traders report as useful market inputs. Treat those inputs as context, not as a standalone signal.
Prevent rollover errors
When the active contract changes, create a new row or a clearly recorded rollover event. Keep the previous month’s final timestamp and open interest. A price jump at rollover may reflect a different delivery month rather than a comparable move in the same contract.
Build the upcoming-IPO view from filings outward
IPO calendars are useful discovery tools, but an expected listing date is provisional until the issuer’s filings support it. Keep the calendar estimate and the filing evidence in separate fields.

| Field | What to capture |
|---|---|
| Issuer | The legal issuer name from the filing. |
| Exchange | The intended listing venue, including any stated market segment. |
| Filing reference | The SEC filing link or accession identifier and filing date. |
| Expected pricing window | A range or window only when the source states one. |
| Expected listing date | The calendar estimate, clearly marked provisional. |
| Status | Filed, estimated, priced, listed, postponed, withdrawn or another defined value. |
| Last filing review | The date and time you last checked the issuer’s filings. |
Step-by-step IPO workflow
- Use Nasdaq Market Activity’s IPO section to find upcoming IPOs, recent listings and historical IPO information. Create a row for each candidate and mark the expected date as estimated.
- Open the issuer’s SEC filing. Record the filing date, accession information and any stated price range or pricing window.
- Compare the filing’s language with the calendar. If the filing provides no firm date, keep the calendar date provisional and write “not stated” for the filing date field rather than guessing.
- Set the expected listing date only when a source states one. A pricing date and a first-trading date are separate events.
- After a new filing, amendment or issuer announcement, update the status and append a timestamped change-log entry. Never overwrite the former estimate without preserving it.
- After pricing, record the announced price and retain the expected date that led you to the row. After the first trade, change the status to listed and stop treating the expected date as forward-looking.
“Expected IPO dates are estimated by EDGAR® Online, which are based on dates in the company’s filings. These expected dates are not official and are not endorsed by Nasdaq.” — Nasdaq Market Activity

This distinction is essential: a calendar can organize your review queue, but it does not make an issuer’s date official.
Add a market-context view for session exceptions
Unexpected gaps in a chart or a missing release often make sense once the trading calendar is visible. Add the exchange holidays, early closes, options expirations and index-rebalance events listed in Nasdaq’s 2026 trading calendar.
Suggested context columns
- Date and time zone: use the calendar’s stated convention.
- Event type: holiday, early close, options expiration or index rebalance.
- Affected market: identify the exchange, asset class or index.
- Session adjustment: record the changed open, close or settlement condition when provided.
- Source and retrieved at: preserve the calendar version you checked.
Use this tab to explain why an earnings release may appear on a nonstandard day, why a futures quote has a shortened session or why liquidity differs around an expiration. Do not assume that one exchange’s holiday closes every related market.
Judge each entry on five reliability axes
When two calendars disagree, compare the entries rather than choosing the one with the more confident wording.
| Axis | Question to ask | Preferred evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Source authority | Who is responsible for the statement? | Issuer or SEC filing for IPO disclosures; the exchange or its official calendar for market hours; a regulated exchange for futures specifications. |
| Date certainty | Is this confirmed, estimated or merely inferred? | Use the source’s own wording and your status field. |
| Market-hours relevance | Will a holiday, early close or expiration affect the event? | Check the market-context tab before scheduling alerts. |
| Instrument definition | Does the quote identify spot versus futures, exchange and contract month? | Prefer the exchange contract specification. |
| Update latency | How old is the displayed value? | Use the quote timestamp and mark delayed data explicitly. |
The SEC’s exchange list can help you verify whether an exchange named in an IPO or futures record is registered. Registration verification does not confirm that a date or price will occur.
Keep a change log and make stale data visible
Volatile rows should be append-only from an audit perspective. Add a separate change-log sheet or database table with the item identifier, old value, new value, source, editor and timestamp.

Review rules that work
- Review earnings rows before their next scheduled report.
- Review an IPO row after every new filing, amendment or issuer announcement and at the next calendar check.
- Refresh commodity prices at the interval appropriate to your purpose and retain the quote timestamp.
- Recheck the market-context tab whenever an exchange publishes a calendar revision.
- Mark an unchanged row stale after its next scheduled review; an unchanged value is not proof that the source was checked.
Use conditional formatting or an equivalent visual cue for rows whose next-review date has passed. A conspicuous stale label is safer than silently carrying an old date into a decision.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Turn the structure into a daily workflow
- Open the context view first. Check today’s holidays, early closes, expirations and rebalances.
- Review due earnings rows. Verify date, quarter and timing; update status and timestamp.
- Refresh commodity rows. Confirm the contract month, unit, delayed or real-time designation and quote time before comparing prices.
- Check IPO filings. Look for amendments, pricing language and a changed listing window; preserve the prior value in the log.
- Sort by next action. Put stale rows first, then events occurring soonest.
- Document the check. Enter the time and source even when nothing changed.
For a weekly review, scan every row for a missing source, missing timestamp, ambiguous instrument type or status that no longer matches the latest filing.
Troubleshoot common watchlist failures
An earnings date moved
Keep the original estimate in the change log, replace the active date with the latest stated date, change the status if the issuer confirmed it, and reset the next-review date. Do not leave two active dates in the same row.
An IPO appears on one calendar but not another
Compare the retrieval times and source authority. Check the issuer’s latest SEC filing, record the filing date and keep the calendar date provisional until the filing or issuer confirms it. If no source states a price or listing window, use “not stated.”
A commodity price looks impossible
Check spot versus futures, contract month, exchange, quotation unit and timestamp. A front-month rollover, a different unit or delayed data can explain a large apparent discrepancy. Do not compare two numbers until those fields match.
Volume is present but open interest is missing
Leave open interest as “not stated” for that source and timestamp. Do not infer it from volume; they measure different things.

A row has passed its review date without a change
Mark it stale, perform the source check and record the new retrieval time. If the source still shows the same value, keep the value but clear the stale status only after the check.
A release falls on a shortened session
Use the market-context tab to identify the early close or holiday and retain the issuer’s stated timing. Do not move the event yourself; flag the session condition for anyone interpreting the reaction.
Protect yourself from calendar-driven trading errors
A watchlist organizes information; it does not establish that a trade is suitable. Do not present an expected IPO date, earnings date or commodity price as a recommendation to buy, sell or hold.

- Confirm whether the quote is delayed before acting on it.
- Understand the contract size, tick value, margin and settlement terms before following a futures price.
- Check the issuer filing rather than relying on a calendar’s estimated IPO date.
- Keep personal alerts separate from public claims; a reminder to review an event is not evidence that the event will occur.
A final quality checklist
- Are earnings, commodities, IPOs and market context in separate views?
- Does every row have a source and retrieval timestamp?
- Are estimated and confirmed dates visibly different?
- Does every futures row identify exchange, contract month, unit, volume and open interest when available?
- Does every IPO row point to the latest filing review and preserve prior dates?
- Are holidays, early closes, options expirations and index rebalances included for the markets you monitor?
- Are stale rows marked instead of silently carried forward?
- Have you avoided turning a calendar entry into a trading recommendation?
When these checks pass, the watchlist does more than collect dates and prices: it shows what each value means, how current it is and what you need to verify next.
