As of October 4, 2026, the Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek tabletop set is announced and available for preorder, with release scheduled for November 13, 2026. The best starting point depends on what you mean by “build”: choose a ready-to-play Commander deck, learn Magic with a teaching deck, or collect cards to assemble your own list.
Choose how you want to build your Star Trek deck
| Your goal | Best starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Play a Star Trek-themed deck without assembling a list card by card | One of the four Star Trek Commander decks | A complete 100-card Commander product, announced as ready to play. |
| Learn the basics of Magic | A Star Trek Welcome Deck, if available at a participating Wizards Play Network store | A 40-card monocolor teaching deck; it is not a Commander deck. |
| Choose individual cards and make a custom deck | Play Boosters and other Star Trek cards | Boosters can help you acquire cards, but do not guarantee any particular card. Check the format you want to play before building. |
Wizards describes the four Commander products as ready-to-play decks built for Commander, Magic’s multiplayer format. The product page also presents Play Boosters as a way to build a Star Trek deck, but opening packs is not a dependable way to obtain any specific card. See the official Star Trek product page and the Star Trek collecting announcement for the announced product details.

Pick a Commander theme
For a ready-to-play option, start with the faction or crew you most want to represent. Wizards has announced four themes:
| Commander deck | Theme to choose it for |
|---|---|
| Federation Fleet | The Federation |
| Landing Party | An away-team adventure |
| Klingon Fury | The Klingons |
| We Are the Borg | The Borg |
These descriptions identify the decks’ themes, not confirmed differences in strength or play style. Until full lists and post-release evaluations are available, choose by setting and play fantasy rather than assuming one deck is strategically superior.

What each regular Commander deck includes
Each announced regular deck contains one foil face commander, 99 other cards—including 32 new-to-Magic cards—10 double-sided tokens, a reference card, and a deck box. The product is described as a 100-card Commander deck. Wizards has also announced Collector’s Edition Commander Decks with Surge Foil cards; that is a premium finish tier, not an established gameplay recommendation.
Decide whether you want to learn or build a custom list
If you are new to Magic
Look for one of the five Star Trek Welcome Decks at participating Wizards Play Network stores. Each is a 40-card monocolor teaching product with a reference card and deck box, intended to introduce the basics. Availability is tied to participating stores; these decks are separate from the 100-card Commander products.

If you want to assemble your own deck
Wizards identifies Play Boosters as a way to build a Star Trek deck, but no booster guarantees a specific card. A custom list also requires choosing a format and checking its deck-building and card-legality rules. If your goal is simply to play the Star Trek Commander themes, the preconstructed decks avoid the need to source a complete list card by card.
Check format legality before you buy or build
Wizards’ announced legality differs by product grouping. The set codes are TRK for the main Star Trek set, TRC for Star Trek Commander, and SDS for Stardates. The announcement says TRK is legal in all formats; TRC and SDS are legal in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage. Individual cards from TRC and SDS are also legal in formats where those cards were already available. Check the official product information and the current rules for your intended format before playing, since legality is format-specific.

Full verified decklists, card-by-card evaluations, singles prices, and post-release performance are not established in the announced product information. That means there is not yet a sound basis for prescribing a commander swap, mana base, synergy package, or “best” upgrades.
