Build a ventilated cabinet, not a sealed box. Measure your exact PlayStation 5, leave at least 10 cm (4 in) between the console and every nearby wall or panel, keep all vents clear, give cool room air a large intake route, and give hot air a short, unobstructed path out of the cabinet. Keep room temperature within Sony’s 5 °C to 35 °C operating range. A door can be used only when it does not compromise that airflow path; otherwise leave it open during demanding games.

Sony does not publish a certified enclosure drawing, required cabinet airflow rate, fan model, or universal temperature limit for custom furniture. Any fan, grille, filter, or opening size is therefore an engineering choice that must be checked in the finished cabinet.

What a safe PS5 enclosure must accomplish

The console’s cooling system can work only if it can draw in room air and discharge heated air without immediately recirculating it. A cabinet is suitable when it preserves that exchange under the conditions in which you actually play, including long sessions and a closed door if you intend to keep the door shut.

  • Clearance: keep a minimum of 10 cm (4 in) from a wall or enclosure surface. Sony describes this as a minimum distance, not a complete cabinet design.
  • Unblocked vents: do not cover, narrow, or place objects against the console’s intake or exhaust openings.
  • Separate air paths: route cool intake air from the room to the console and route hot exhaust directly back to the room, rather than allowing the two streams to mix inside the compartment.
  • Room temperature: operate within 5 °C to 35 °C, Sony’s stated operating range for the current model documentation.
  • Dust control: keep the console away from long-fiber carpet and cloth covers, and make vents and filters accessible for cleaning.
  • Stable mounting: support the console securely in either orientation and provide strain relief so cable movement cannot tip or pull it.

A closed TV stand is not automatically unsafe, but a closed, cramped compartment with small decorative holes and no defined exhaust route is effectively a heat trap. Treat the cabinet as an airflow system rather than as a box with a few random vents.

Identify the exact PlayStation 5 before designing

Dimensions, stand hardware, and vent locations vary among revisions. Read the model number on the console label and use the current Sony manual for that model before cutting panels. The following figures apply to the CFI-2118 revision and exclude projecting parts; older models and PlayStation 5 Pro models differ.

CFI-2118 version Approximate dimensions Maximum rated power Design implication
Disc model 358 × 96 × 216 mm 350 W Allow additional room beyond all three dimensions for the 10 cm clearances, cables, and airflow.
Digital model 358 × 80 × 216 mm 350 W Do not substitute the smaller height for clearance; the 10 cm minimum still applies around the enclosure surfaces.

Sony lists these CFI-2118 dimensions as approximate. Measure your own unit, including its installed base, before finalizing shelf height or cutouts. Do not assume a digital model, an older launch model, or a Pro model will fit a cabinet made for another revision.

Plan the airflow architecture

Use a low-resistance intake

Provide a broad opening on the cooler side of the cabinet so room air can reach the console without passing through a narrow slot, dense decorative grille, or obstructive fabric. The opening can be in the front, side, bottom, or a combination, provided it does not place dust, carpet fibers, or loose objects directly against a console vent. A removable grille or filter is useful only if it can be cleaned without restricting the opening as dust accumulates.

Give exhaust a straight route to the room

Place the exhaust opening behind the console and keep the space between the console’s hot-air outlet and that opening clear. Avoid a dead-end cavity, a sharp internal obstruction, or an opening that points the hot stream toward the intake. If the cabinet has a rear panel, cut an opening that lets the exhaust leave the furniture instead of circulating inside it.

Do not rely on a specified fan number

Sony publishes no custom-enclosure CFM target, fan size, cabinet temperature trip point, or validated fan layout. A powered exhaust or intake fan may help when the cabinet cannot provide a passive path, but it is not a Sony-certified safety requirement and cannot guarantee safe temperatures by itself. Choose fan placement to reinforce the room-to-console-to-room path, protect the blades with guards, and verify the result in the completed cabinet.

Keep hot and cool air from short-circuiting

The intake and exhaust should be physically separated enough that the exhaust does not immediately return to the intake. A side intake paired with a rear exhaust is often easier to arrange than two openings on the same small panel. If the cabinet must use one face for both openings, add an internal divider or baffle that guides the streams in different directions without reducing the required clearances.

Choose horizontal or vertical placement

Horizontal placement

Horizontal placement is the simplest arrangement for a cabinet: it is stable, does not require a vertical stand, and usually leaves the top and sides easier to keep clear. Build the shelf so the console cannot slide into a wall, cable bundle, or door when connected. Do not use a soft, long-fiber surface beneath it; a rigid, level shelf is preferable.

Vertical placement

For vertical installation, use the base or stand compatible with the exact console model and secure it with the supplied screw where the model requires one. Check that the stand is fully seated before routing cables. Sony notes that the screw and console can remain hot immediately after use, so allow them to cool before removing or adjusting the stand. A vertical layout is acceptable only when the stand and cabinet cannot be knocked over and every vent remains open.

Build the cabinet step by step

  1. Record the model and measure the installed console. Photograph or write down the model number, measure width, height, depth, and the position of projecting parts, then consult the matching Sony manual. Include the base or stand in the measurement if it will remain installed.
  2. Mark the clearance envelope. On your cabinet drawing, reserve at least 10 cm (4 in) from each nearby wall or panel. This is the minimum distance Sony specifies; it is not permission to reduce the intake or exhaust to a narrow slot.
  3. Choose the air direction. Mark the room-side intake and the rear or side exhaust before cutting material. Draw arrows showing cool air entering, passing the console, and leaving directly to the room. If the arrows overlap, revise the layout.
  4. Size openings for low resistance. Make the intake and exhaust broad and unobstructed rather than relying on a few small holes. Account for the open area lost to grille bars, filter media, hinges, and the cabinet frame. Sony does not provide a required opening area, so validate the finished design rather than claiming a universal dimension.
  5. Cut and finish the panels. Remove sharp edges, seal or edge-band exposed material, and ensure no splinters or screws can reach a cable or vent. Keep the rear opening aligned with the console exhaust and avoid a recessed pocket that traps hot air.
  6. Add guards and service access. Guard any fan opening, make filters or grilles removable, and leave enough room to vacuum the console’s vents and the cabinet interior. A filter that cannot be removed and cleaned will eventually become an obstruction.
  7. Provide cable relief. Use a rear cable opening large enough for power, HDMI, network, and accessory leads without crushing them. Add a strain-relief point so a pulled cable cannot move the console or snag a fan.
  8. Install optional fans only if needed. Mount an exhaust fan where it assists the natural hot-air path, or an intake fan where it supplies cool room air. Keep the fan, guard, and wiring outside the console’s clearance envelope. Use a quiet control method appropriate to the fan, but do not describe the result as certified by Sony.
  9. Place the console and check every vent. Set the console on the finished shelf or secured stand, connect cables, and inspect from every side. Nothing should touch a vent, lean against the console, or block the rear route.
  10. Test before closing the door. Run a demanding game with the door open first, then repeat with the door in the position you intend to use. Observe whether hot air exits the cabinet, whether the compartment becomes noticeably hotter than the room, and whether the console reports a temperature warning or shuts down. If heat accumulates, stop using the closed configuration and enlarge or redesign the airflow path.

When a door is acceptable

A door is a cosmetic and dust-control feature, not a substitute for ventilation. A solid door that closes over a small compartment can defeat an otherwise good rear opening by limiting the intake. If you need a door, use one with openings that preserve the intake and exhaust routes and keep the required clearances when it is shut. Test the actual closed position during a sustained, demanding session; do not infer safety from a brief idle test.

If the door blocks the intake, exhaust, or a fan guard, leave it open while playing. A design that is safe only with the door open should be labeled and operated that way rather than treated as a closed cabinet.

Materials and practical safety details

  • Rigid support: use a level shelf or platform that cannot sag into the console. Keep the surface free of long fibers and debris.
  • Combustibles: keep paper, fabric, packaging, and other loose or combustible items away from vents and fan openings.
  • Fan protection: fit finger guards and route fan wires so they cannot contact blades or become trapped in a door.
  • Moisture and sunlight: keep the cabinet in a dry location away from direct heat sources. The 5 °C to 35 °C range applies to the surrounding operating environment, not merely to the air at the room’s thermostat.
  • Service clearance: leave enough working room to remove the console, clean vents, tighten the stand, and replace a filter without dismantling the furniture.
  • Noise: a fan can add noise and vibration. Isolate the fan from thin panels with suitable mounts, but never use acoustic foam or cloth that covers a vent.

Validate the finished enclosure

Because no official cabinet CFM or sensor threshold exists, validation has to be practical and specific to your build. Perform the checks below after the console is installed and again after filters have collected dust.

  1. Confirm the room is within 5 °C to 35 °C.
  2. Check the 10 cm minimum distance at every wall, panel, and door edge; measure rather than judging by eye.
  3. With the console running, verify that the exhaust path sends warm air out of the cabinet instead of back toward the intake.
  4. Run a demanding game for a representative long session. Compare door-open and door-closed behavior if both modes are intended.
  5. Watch for warning messages, performance interruptions, unexpected shutdowns, excessive fan noise, or a compartment that continues to heat after play stops.
  6. After switching off, allow the console and vertical-stand screw to cool before moving or servicing it.

A cabinet that becomes progressively hotter, recirculates its own exhaust, or triggers warnings needs more opening area, better separation between intake and exhaust, a shorter exhaust route, or operation with the door open. Adding a fan without correcting a blocked path can simply move hot air around inside the compartment.

Cleaning and maintenance schedule

Dust is an airflow problem as well as a cleanliness problem. Sony’s CFI-2118 instruction manual specifically recommends a cleaning tool such as a handheld vacuum cleaner for dust buildup. A compact handheld vacuum with a soft brush is therefore the most directly matched maintenance tool.

  • Power down and unplug the console before cleaning.
  • Vacuum dust from accessible vents and the area beneath removable covers using the soft-brush attachment; do not force a nozzle into an opening.
  • Clean cabinet grilles and filters whenever dust is visible or airflow is reduced.
  • Inspect the rear exhaust opening for objects that have fallen behind the console.
  • Check that cables, the base, and any fan guard remain secure after cleaning.
  • Recheck the airflow after reinstalling a filter; a loaded filter can turn a generous opening into a restriction.

Do not cover the console with cloth between uses. A cover can retain heat and shed fibers into the ventilation system.

Common enclosure failures and fixes

The compartment is hot even though the console is not warning

Warm cabinet air indicates that heat is accumulating. Open the door, clear the rear route, enlarge the intake or exhaust, and separate the exhaust stream from the intake. Continue closed-door use only after a sustained test shows that heat is removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fan is loud but temperatures do not improve

The fan may be recirculating air or fighting a restrictive grille. Confirm its direction, remove obstructions, and place it so it moves air from the console toward room air. A larger opening or better path may be more effective than a faster fan.

The console does not fit after the stand is installed

Re-measure the exact model with its base, screw, and cables attached. Do not remove the stand or compress cables to gain space. Redesign the shelf or choose horizontal placement if the vertical assembly cannot retain the required clearances.

Dust builds up quickly

Inspect the intake for carpet fibers, fabric, or an unsealed grille. Move the cabinet away from long-fiber carpet, clean the filter more often, and keep the intake accessible. Never solve dust by covering the console.

The door catches a cable or fan guard

Add a properly sized cable-relief opening, reroute the lead, and protect the fan opening. The door must close without touching the console, cables, guards, or vents; otherwise operate with the door open or change the cabinet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing enclosure layouts

Design Clearance to walls Intake and exhaust Door operation Service and stability When to choose it
Open shelf At least 10 cm on every applicable side Room air reaches the console directly; exhaust leaves into the room No door restriction Best access; horizontal placement is especially stable Preferred when appearance and dust control do not require an enclosure
Ventilated cabinet, passive At least 10 cm; openings must not create a cramped cavity Large intake plus a direct rear exhaust, with hot and cool streams separated Closed only after sustained validation Requires removable grilles or filters and careful model-specific fitting Good for furniture integration when the airflow path can be kept short
Ventilated cabinet with fan At least 10 cm; fan hardware also needs clearance Fan reinforces, rather than replaces, the room-to-console-to-room path Closed only if testing shows heat is removed Adds wiring, guards, noise, and maintenance Useful when passive openings cannot provide a reliable path; no universal CFM is specified
Sealed or cramped compartment Does not meet the intent of Sony’s clearance guidance Heat recirculates or vents through restrictive gaps Door closed by design Hard to clean and difficult to validate Do not use for active play

What to buy for the build

The only maintenance item directly named in Sony’s current documentation is a handheld vacuum cleaner for removing dust from vents and under-cover areas. For a vertical installation, use a model-compatible official base or stand and its specified screw. A cabinet fan, filter, grille, and cable hardware are optional construction components; none carries a Sony guarantee that a particular cabinet will remain within a safe temperature.

Final operating checklist

  • Exact model identified and measured with its installed stand.
  • At least 10 cm (4 in) to every nearby wall or panel.
  • All console vents open and free of objects, fabric, and carpet fibers.
  • Large, cleanable intake connected to cool room air.
  • Short rear exhaust route that does not feed back into the intake.
  • Room temperature between 5 °C and 35 °C.
  • Horizontal shelf or model-compatible secured vertical stand is stable.
  • Cables have relief and cannot strike a fan or tip the console.
  • Door-open and door-closed behavior tested for the mode you will use.
  • Cleaning access remains available after the cabinet is assembled.

If any item fails, the enclosure is not ready for closed-door operation. The safest design is the one that keeps the PS5 in open room airflow, with a direct exhaust path and enough access to inspect and clean it.
