The fastest way to make money in Truck Manager is not to buy trucks as quickly as possible. It is to keep every available truck working on a route whose net earnings per hour remain positive after fuel, CO2 quotas, loading and unloading time, and wear. Then use the surplus to remove the bottleneck that is limiting throughput: demand, terminal capacity, vehicle capability, or maintenance.
There is no permanently best truck or route. Payouts, travel times, demand and operating costs depend on your current network and game state. Use the method below to calculate your own route margin, protect utilization, and scale only when the next truck can stay busy.
The profit model: utilization multiplied by margin
A truck creates value only while it is carrying a contract or moving toward its next profitable load. A high-paying trip can still be a poor business decision if the vehicle spends most of the cycle waiting at a terminal, consumes expensive fuel or quotas, or displaces several shorter jobs.
For each candidate route, calculate:
Net earnings per hour = (contract payout − fuel cost − CO2 quota cost − other trip costs) ÷ (travel time + loading time + unloading time + expected waiting time).

Use the route screen’s current values rather than a guide’s old payout list. The game’s official material does not provide a complete, current table of route payouts, truck prices or fuel prices, so any fixed “best route” or profit-per-hour number would be unreliable. Record the values shown in your own save and update them when demand, prices or vehicle condition changes.
Why earnings per trip can mislead
Suppose Route A pays more for one completion but takes much longer than Route B. Route B may produce more cash over the same playing session because the truck returns sooner and can repeat the run. Compare both per trip and per hour, then check whether enough demand exists to sustain repeated dispatches.
Include the costs that are easy to miss
- Fuel and any CO2 quota consumed by the route.
- Loading and unloading time, not just the map distance.
- Expected wear and the maintenance time that follows.
- Capacity that goes unused because the cargo does not fill the truck.
- The opportunity cost of assigning the truck to this route instead of another one.
Start with utilization before expanding
Your first objective is continuous dispatching. Assign the first truck to the strongest available route and keep it moving while you learn its cycle time, costs and demand behavior. A truck that sits idle delays every later purchase because its capital is producing no revenue.

- Open the available contracts and note payout, distance, duration, cargo requirements and demand.
- Estimate a complete cycle: travel, loading, unloading and any queue or terminal delay.
- Check that the truck’s capacity and cargo compatibility match the contract.
- Dispatch the vehicle and record the actual completion time and costs.
- Repeat the measurement for several runs before treating the result as a stable average.
Do not buy a second truck merely because cash is available. Buy it when your existing route has enough demand, your first truck is regularly active, and you have a reserve for fuel, quotas, repairs and unexpected downtime.
How to compare routes in your current network
Make a small route ledger whenever you unlock a contract or change a truck. The goal is not accounting for its own sake; it is finding the route that converts one hour of vehicle time into the most sustainable profit.

Use a rolling average, not one lucky run
Record at least several completed cycles and calculate average net earnings per hour. A single run can look exceptional because of a favorable contract or temporarily low input cost. Recheck the route after a price change, a demand change, a truck upgrade or a maintenance event.

Separate a route’s margin from its strategic value
A route with slightly lower current margin may still be the better assignment if it has deep demand, predictable cycles and low wear. Conversely, a high-margin route that exhausts shared demand quickly can leave several trucks idle. Keep a route only while its repeated, network-wide contribution exceeds the alternatives.
Demand is shared: avoid flooding a profitable line
The June 2025 R&D update explains that line demand is shared across routes and terminals. This matters when a route appears profitable: adding trucks to the same line does not create unlimited work. Each additional vehicle can divide the available demand and reduce utilization for the whole fleet.
Signs that demand, not cash, is your bottleneck
- A truck repeatedly waits for a load even though it is in good condition.
- Several routes connected to the same line show reduced availability after you add vehicles.
- Terminal queues grow while the number of completed contracts does not.
- Your route ledger shows good margin per completed trip but falling earnings per hour because of waiting.
What to do before buying another truck
- Redirect the idle vehicle to a route with unused demand and compatible cargo.
- Check whether a terminal upgrade can increase the amount of work the network supports.
- Use demand-related R&D improvements if they address the specific constraint.
- Buy another truck only after the expanded network can keep it active.
When demand is shared across terminals, evaluate the entire line rather than one route card. Two individually attractive routes may compete for the same underlying pool of jobs.
Truck purchases versus upgrades: choose the current bottleneck
A new truck increases potential capacity, but an upgrade can produce more revenue from vehicles you already own. Make the choice by identifying what is preventing completed contracts.

Evaluate the payback in vehicle-hours
Estimate how many additional net-profit hours an upgrade must create to recover its price. If a speed improvement saves time but demand is already saturated, it may not increase completed contracts. If demand is deep and the truck is continuously dispatched, the same improvement can be highly valuable.

Capacity, speed and cargo compatibility all affect margin. A large truck is not automatically better if the route supplies small loads or if its operating cost rises faster than its payout. Keep a mixed fleet only when the contracts justify it; otherwise, specialize vehicles around the lines that provide the strongest sustained demand.

Maintenance, reliability and MOT are profit controls
Maintenance is not a cosmetic expense. The January 2025 major update added a Fleet Overview, Maintenance Centre, bulk repair and MOT workflows, and states that fleet maintenance has a 15% impact on reputation. A vehicle that fails or loses reputation can cost more in interrupted work than a scheduled service would have cost.
A practical maintenance routine
- Open Fleet Overview and inspect condition across every vehicle.
- Use the Maintenance Centre to identify trucks approaching a repair or MOT requirement.
- Schedule service before condition becomes the reason a truck cannot accept work.
- Use bulk repair when several vehicles need attention, but stagger downtime if the network cannot afford to lose all of them simultaneously.
- After maintenance, return the truck to a route with confirmed demand rather than leaving it unassigned.
Keep a cash reserve specifically for repairs and MOT events. Spending every surplus coin on another truck can force an entire fleet into idle time when maintenance arrives.
Schedule around the network
Repair the least profitable or least time-sensitive truck first when possible. If one vehicle is on a long contract, plan its service for the return window instead of interrupting a high-margin cycle. The objective is not to avoid all downtime; it is to choose downtime deliberately.
Fuel and CO2 quotas: buy with timing in mind
The official Steam listing specifically advises buying fuel and CO2 quotas at the right time to optimize profits. Treat both as operating inputs, not afterthoughts.
Build a purchasing rule
- Estimate the fuel and quota requirement for the next planned batch of runs.
- Compare the current price with the prices you have recorded in recent sessions.
- Buy enough to protect dispatch continuity, but do not lock all available cash into supplies while repairs or demand upgrades are unfunded.
- Recalculate route margin when input prices change; the best route can change without a payout change.
Longer routes are especially sensitive to fuel, quota and wear because one assignment ties up the truck for more time. Include those costs before accepting a contract, not after it completes.
Use the five R&D departments to remove constraints
The 2025 R&D update introduced five departments: fleet upgrades, advanced batteries, aerodynamics and speed boosters, telematics and tech, and supercharging. Their names describe broad upgrade areas, but the profitable choice depends on your network’s limiting factor.

Research the department that matches the measured bottleneck, not the one with the most impressive name. After each major upgrade, recalculate route earnings per hour; a faster truck can expose a demand shortage, while a capacity upgrade can expose terminal limits.

Long-haul contracts: bid for the margin, not the headline payout
The Long Hauls update introduced competitive bidding for 1000 km routes. These contracts can be lucrative, but the truck is unavailable for shorter repeat routes during the long-haul assignment.
Calculate the opportunity cost
Before bidding, compare the expected long-haul net margin with the profit the same truck would produce on shorter routes during the same period. Include fuel and CO2 quotas, loading and unloading, expected wear, maintenance timing and the possibility that the truck returns when demand has shifted.
A disciplined bidding process
- Estimate the truck’s complete long-haul cycle, including all non-driving time.
- Subtract fuel, CO2 quota and expected maintenance costs.
- Estimate the net earnings the truck would make on its best available shorter route over that same time.
- Set a maximum bid that leaves a meaningful advantage over the shorter-route alternative.
- Bid only if the contract will not strand other trucks or consume the cash reserve needed for repairs and supplies.
The official announcement describes these as competitive bids for “lucrative long-haul contracts” and “1000km routes.” Lucrative is not guaranteed for every bid: your price, vehicle condition and local alternatives determine whether the contract improves the fleet.

The official game listing includes expanding logistics centres and managing staff alongside route creation and fleet growth. Treat these systems as throughput infrastructure. A new truck cannot earn if the terminal cannot process its loads, and a larger centre does not pay back if there is no demand to fill it.
When a logistics-centre investment makes sense
- Existing terminals are creating measurable queues or limiting dispatch frequency.
- Shared line demand is deep enough to support more completed contracts.
- The investment removes a known bottleneck identified in your route ledger.
- You retain enough cash for fuel, quotas, maintenance and MOT work after paying for it.
Staff decisions should be judged the same way: retain or add staff when their contribution increases completed, profitable work rather than merely increasing nominal capacity.

A repeatable growth cycle
Use this cycle whenever your fleet grows or the market changes:
- Inspect. Review Fleet Overview, vehicle condition, active contracts, terminal queues and available demand.
- Measure. Update payout, cycle time, fuel, quota, wear and waiting figures for your main routes.
- Rank. Sort routes by sustainable net earnings per hour, then remove options whose demand cannot support another run.
- Dispatch. Keep every ready truck assigned to a route with confirmed work.
- Maintain. Schedule repairs and MOT before reliability or reputation becomes a network-wide problem.
- Reinvest. Spend surplus on the bottleneck: truck capacity, terminal capacity, demand-related R&D, speed, efficiency or reliability.
- Stress-test. Recalculate if fuel or quota prices move, a route saturates, or a long-haul bid becomes available.
Troubleshooting common profit problems
My new truck is idle
Check shared line demand first. Move it to an underused route, verify cargo compatibility and inspect terminal capacity. If no route can keep it working, stop expanding and improve demand or infrastructure.
Revenue looks high but cash barely grows
Separate payout from net earnings. Recheck fuel, CO2 quotas, maintenance, waiting and any unused capacity. A long cycle can also hide a low hourly return.

Inspect condition and MOT status in Fleet Overview and the Maintenance Centre. The January 2025 update’s stated 15% maintenance impact makes neglected service a financial issue, not just a presentation issue.
A long-haul contract paid well but slowed the fleet
Compare its net hourly result with the shorter route that truck could have repeated. Reduce your future maximum bid if the opportunity cost was not covered, and reserve long-haul work for vehicles that are not needed on high-demand short routes.
An upgrade did not increase profit
Look for a downstream bottleneck. Faster vehicles may now be waiting for demand; larger capacity may be limited by terminal handling; efficiency gains may be too small to matter on a short route. Reassign the truck or upgrade the constrained part of the network before buying another improvement.
Decisions that usually destroy profitability
- Buying trucks faster than demand grows.
- Choosing a route by payout alone.
- Ignoring loading, unloading and queue time.
- Spending the entire cash balance on vehicles or R&D.
- Waiting for a breakdown instead of scheduling maintenance.
- Accepting every long-haul bid without valuing the truck’s alternative work.
- Assuming a route or truck that was best earlier remains best after prices, demand or upgrades change.
What a profitable fleet looks like
A healthy fleet has no permanently idle vehicle, a route ledger based on current in-game values, enough demand behind each active line, and a maintenance schedule that prevents avoidable interruptions. Its cash is divided between operating reserves and targeted reinvestment rather than committed entirely to expansion.
Use the game’s official systems as management tools: create and monitor routes, expand logistics centres when they are the bottleneck, schedule repairs and maintenance, buy fuel and CO2 quotas at advantageous times, and manage staff. The profitable sequence is consistent: measure utilization, calculate net hourly margin, protect reliability, then add capacity only when the network can use it.
