Choose the right price data source
Start by defining whether the app serves shoppers who want price history and alerts or sellers who want to manage competitive prices. Those are different use cases, and the API choice follows from that distinction.

Design the app around products, observations, and alerts
A useful first version separates the provider-specific data connection from your app’s product records, history, and notification logic. This is an implementation design recommendation, not a reference architecture mandated by either provider.
1. Give each tracked product a stable identity
Store the selected source and its product identifier together. For a Keepa-tracked Amazon product, tracking and notification objects identify the product by ASIN. 2. Put provider-specific work in a source adapter
Create an adapter for each data source to handle authentication, marketplace selection, lookup, response parsing, and update behavior. Keepa documents separate product, search, and tracking API functions, which makes a provider boundary especially useful if the app later adds another source. Keepa API documentation
3. Save observations, not just the latest price
If users need a history chart, a “lowest seen” value, or an audit trail, persist each normalized observation with its observed time, currency, marketplace, offer or condition context when available, and a reference to the source record. Keeping only the latest value makes it impossible to reconstruct your own observation history. 4. Store alert rules independently from collection
Represent a user’s desired price threshold and availability conditions as rules tied to a tracked product. Keepa tracking examples include desired-price thresholds and out-of-stock or back-in-stock conditions. Separating rules from collection lets the app evaluate several users’ preferences against the same incoming observation without treating each user’s alert as a separate data source. 5. Treat notification delivery as its own job
Record the source event, the rule evaluation, and the notification delivery outcome as separate state. Use idempotency keys or equivalent deduplication so retries do not send confusing duplicate alerts. Build alert rules that are clear to users
Define exactly what counts as a trigger before writing notification code. Common choices include a price reaching a target, a drop from a prior observation, or an availability transition. Keepa’s tracking model documents desired prices and out-of-stock conditions; the app should make the selected trigger understandable rather than presenting all changes as equivalent.
- Price threshold: Notify when the observed price meets the user’s chosen target. Specify whether the target applies to a particular offer or a source-provided price category.
- Price drop: Define the comparison point—such as the previous observation or a saved baseline—and avoid implying that a short-lived offer is a lasting price trend.
- Availability: Treat in-stock and out-of-stock transitions as distinct events. A product’s availability can change independently of its price.
- Delivery state: Track whether a notification is queued, sent, failed, or retried so a source event is not confused with a successfully delivered user alert.
Choose push or pull delivery deliberately
Keepa says, “The Tracking API only supports notifications through push webhooks or API pull requests.” With a webhook, your service receives events when sent; with polling, a worker requests available notifications. For polling, retrieve and persist notifications promptly; for webhooks, store the event robustly before acknowledging receipt. A price without context can mislead. Display currency and marketplace, and include offer or condition details where the source provides them. Keepa documents marketplace offer fields such as seller, condition, shipping, stock, and offer price history. It also cautions that the returned offer set can change and may contain outdated offers, so do not label a value as definitively current or universally lowest without qualifying what the source returned.
