Set a considered price for each market and plan, then account for local purchasing power, competitors, payment habits, taxes, content availability and the sales channel. Measure conversion and net proceeds alongside renewal, failed payments and churn, and revise prices as you learn. A converted home-market price is a useful reference point, not a finished international pricing strategy.
What multi-currency pricing does—and does not—solve
Showing a subscription in a customer’s familiar currency makes the amount easier to understand. It does not decide whether that amount is appropriate for the market, whether the customer can pay with a preferred method, or how much the service will retain after taxes, platform charges and currency effects.
Separate two decisions:
- Currency presentation: Which currency and amount does the customer see and pay?
- Price localization: What price should this market pay for this plan, given local demand, purchasing power, competition, payment behavior and the value offered?
Converting a home price at the day’s exchange rate can provide a starting benchmark, but it does not account for those market differences. Cleeng’s September 7, 2026 guide on streaming price localization identifies purchasing power, local competition, payment-method availability and regulation as inputs to the decision. The available evidence does not establish an optimal price for any particular country.
Market size is also not the same as addressable demand for one service. BIEM’s April 17, 2026 market outlook, reporting Futuresource research, estimated global SVoD consumer spending at EUR 120 billion in 2025, up 14% from 2024. It described mature-market saturation alongside lower saturation in some Asia-Pacific and Central and Eastern European markets. Those broad patterns can inform where to investigate; they do not predict a service’s subscriber growth or identify a winning price.

How to set a localized price by country and plan
Build a price architecture that is deliberate, testable and understandable to customers. Treat each market and plan as a decision, rather than assuming one global price or applying a uniform foreign-exchange markup.
1. Define the offer and its market boundaries
For each launch market, confirm that the service can legally and contractually sell the content there, which titles are available, and which plans customers can buy. A price is not meaningful in isolation from the catalog, playback experience, supported devices, billing period and benefits attached to the plan. Keep regional content availability and distribution terms distinct from currency handling.
2. Establish a local reference range
Use multiple inputs to form a range for each plan: local purchasing power, competing video services and substitutes, local payment preferences, and the value and breadth of your own offer. A foreign-exchange conversion can be one comparison point, but avoid treating it as the target. Consider whether a market needs a distinct entry plan, a different billing cadence, or a different set of plan benefits; do not assume that a lower price alone will increase sign-ups or lifetime value.

3. Price the plan, not just the currency
Set prices by both market and plan. If a service offers ad-supported, standard and premium options, for example, define the local price spacing and the differences in value customers receive. Make plan names, billing interval, included features and renewal terms clear in the local checkout. Netflix has said that it offers several price points, periodically adjusts prices, and tests plans and price points. That illustrates an iterative practice, not a price template for another service.

Netflix’s 2024 Form 10-K, filed in 2025, reported that paid plans ranged from the U.S. dollar equivalent of $1 to $32 per month across countries and plans as of December 31, 2024. This is a historical illustration of geographic variation, not a current Netflix price list or a recommended range for a new service.
4. Check the customer price against the amount you retain
Model the customer-facing gross price and the service’s expected net proceeds separately. For each market and channel, account for applicable taxes, payment-processing costs, app or device platform terms, refunds, currency conversion and potential exchange-rate movement. Do not compare a tax-inclusive customer price in one route with a tax-exclusive payout in another. Confirm current local tax and consumer requirements with qualified advisers; rules vary by market and sales channel.

5. Validate payment methods and recurring collection
Support the payment methods your intended customers can actually use, and evaluate how they work for renewals, retries and refunds—not only the first checkout. A locally priced amount can still fail to convert if checkout does not support familiar payment methods or recurring collection is unreliable. Stripe’s subscription guide reports that its analysis of 15 million subscription checkout sessions found no lower monthly revenue per subscriber or higher cancellation among customers offered local pricing in its holdback experiment. That is a Stripe-reported result for its measured sample and outcomes, not a universal causal guarantee.
Choose the billing route before setting prices
Direct web billing, in-app purchases and device-platform distribution can differ in who controls price points, which currency is displayed, how taxes are handled, what proceeds reach the service and which notice rules apply. Choose the route in which the customer will actually subscribe, and verify its current capabilities and terms before publishing prices.

Vimeo’s international-pricing page also says in-app purchase prices follow the customer’s Apple or Google account settings, and that app-store currency conversion may not track the current exchange rate. Treat direct OTT regional pricing and app-store purchases as separate implementation paths, even when they sell access to the same catalog.

For each route, map the complete transaction: displayed amount, checkout currency, tax treatment, platform or processor deductions, payout currency, renewal amount, retry behavior, refund path, support owner and required price-change notices. The documentation above establishes that these details differ; it does not determine which channel has the best economics for a particular service.

Launch with a controlled set of market and plan prices, then make changes based on observed customer and financial outcomes. Avoid concluding that a price is successful from checkout conversion alone: it may bring sign-ups while producing weaker retention or lower net proceeds.
- Acquisition: Visit-to-checkout and checkout-completion rates by market, plan, currency and payment method.
- First payment: Authorization success, payment failures, refunds and chargebacks, segmented by route and method.
- Renewal: Renewal success, retry recovery, involuntary cancellations, and the amount and currency charged at renewal.
- Retention: Voluntary cancellation, cohort retention and churn by acquisition market, plan and billing period.
- Economics: Net proceeds after taxes, platform and processing costs, refunds and currency effects; compare on a consistent basis.
- Customer experience: Complaints or support contacts about unexpected currency, price changes, payment failures or plan value.
Compare cohorts over enough renewal cycles to distinguish initial checkout behavior from ongoing subscription performance. If testing prices, change one material part of the offer at a time where feasible, record when and where each price applied, and account for seasonality, marketing mix and catalog changes. Do not infer a causal price effect from a simple before-and-after comparison if other conditions changed at the same time.

Billing cadence deserves its own analysis. Stripe’s 2025 media, entertainment and gaming cohort reported 6% involuntary churn for annual subscriptions versus 12% for monthly subscriptions. This is an observed cohort comparison, not proof that changing billing cadence alone causes the difference or that it applies to every streaming service. Assess whether annual billing fits your audience, cash-flow needs and cancellation patterns rather than importing that figure as a forecast.
Plan for price changes and international operations
A localized price is an operating commitment, not a one-time spreadsheet conversion. Set owners and review intervals for regional prices, exchange-rate exposure, tax checks, payment coverage, customer communications and catalog rights. Before changing a price, identify affected subscribers, the applicable notice requirements for each channel, the displayed renewal amount and the path for customer questions or cancellation.
Keep a market-by-market record of the active price, currency, plan, channel, effective date and terms. This helps reconcile what customers saw with what was charged and paid out, and makes it easier to identify whether a change coincided with a shift in conversion, renewal or churn. Check platform documentation and local requirements again at implementation time; capabilities and rules can change.
Expansion may also involve distribution relationships. BIEM’s April 2026 outlook notes partnerships with pay-TV operators, telecom providers and aggregators as increasingly important to scale and churn reduction. This is an industry-level observation, not evidence that a particular partnership is available or beneficial. Evaluate any deal against the same questions as other routes: who owns the customer relationship, controls the price, bills and supports subscribers, bears payment and tax obligations, and reports usable renewal and churn data?
