Set a total system budget first, prioritize the graphics card and other parts that affect your target games, then verify every component’s compatibility and current local price before ordering.
Set your budget and gaming target first
Decide how much you can spend on the complete PC, then list the games you play and the display you want to use. A build for 1080p gaming has different needs from one intended for demanding 1440p games, and a competitive game played at a high refresh rate may call for different priorities from a graphically intensive single-player title.
Include the full system in your budget: processor, graphics card, motherboard, memory, storage, case, power supply, and any CPU cooler you need. If the budget must also cover a monitor, keyboard, mouse, operating system, or other peripherals, reserve money for those before choosing parts. Otherwise, a seemingly affordable parts list can exceed your real limit.
- Write down your target: games, resolution, graphics settings, and desired refresh rate.
- Set a total spending limit: use delivered prices in your market, including tax and shipping where applicable.
- Decide what can wait: decorative lighting or premium finishes may be less valuable than a faster graphics card or more storage.
A dated example illustrates why the target matters: GamersNexus’s October 2025 guide describes a build under $800 aimed at 1080p gaming and selected 1440p esports use. That is an example for its stated time and goals, not a universal price or recommendation for a 2026 purchase. See the October 2025 budget-build guide.

Prioritize the parts that affect your games
Graphics card
For a gaming-focused PC, the graphics card is often the most consequential choice for frame rates and visual settings, particularly as resolution and graphical demands rise. Compare cards using performance results for games and settings close to yours, rather than relying on a brand name, model number, or a single broad claim that one card is “best.” Check local prices and availability: a strong card at a poor price may be worse value than a nearby alternative.
Also check which features your games support and whether those features matter to you. A feature that does not improve your experience is not automatically worth paying extra for. GPU generations, memory capacities, and market positions change; TechRadar’s 2026 roundup is a time-bound editorial snapshot, not a permanent minimum specification. Review its gaming-PC roundup as one dated perspective, then verify current options independently.

- Graphics Notice – This unit is equipped with integrated graphics only; no dedicated GPU is included, and graphics performance is limited by shared system memory.
Processor
Choose a processor that can keep up with your graphics card and the games you play, but avoid spending heavily on CPU capability that does not improve your target experience. A processor can matter more in CPU-intensive games or at high frame rates; for other games and resolutions, the graphics card may be the more valuable place to put additional budget. Compare whole-system performance at your target settings rather than treating any fixed CPU-to-GPU spending ratio as a rule.
Memory, storage, and the remaining parts
Buy memory that matches the motherboard’s supported type and configuration. Capacity and speed should suit the games and applications you use, but do not sacrifice compatibility to chase a headline specification. Choose storage capacity based on the games you intend to keep installed and the prices available locally.

A motherboard, case, power supply, and cooler should meet the system’s actual needs without consuming money that would make a more meaningful difference elsewhere. GamersNexus’s February 2026 mid-range guide describes a value approach: choose parts judged sufficient for the build and spend less on components that do not add meaningful performance. Its particular prices and parts should not be generalized to a different budget. Read the February 2026 mid-range guide.
Check compatibility before you buy
A parts list is not a build until the exact components work together. A processor and motherboard may need a compatible socket, chipset, and firmware support; memory must be the type the board accepts; and the case must fit the graphics card and cooling hardware. Confirm the requirements for the specific models you plan to order rather than assuming that parts with similar names will fit.

MSI’s 2025 PC-building guide covers budgeting, component selection, fit, and GPU length. Consult MSI’s PC Building Guide & Checklist. Compatibility-checked example lists are useful starting points, but changing even one part can affect fit or support; recheck substitutions rather than assuming they inherit the original list’s checks.

When you have two plausible parts lists, compare them as complete systems. A cheaper graphics card may require a different motherboard, power supply, or case; a discounted processor may not be a saving if its platform raises the total cost. Use the same target games, resolution, and settings when comparing expected gaming performance.

Use example builds as dated starting points
Published build guides can help you understand how parts fit a particular budget and goal, but prices, stock, and performance standings move over time and vary by country. GamersNexus’s October 2025 budget example includes an AMD Ryzen 5 5500 and Intel Arc B570 in its stated under-$800, 1080p-focused context. Those components are not established as the best buys for every market or as the best choices in October 2026. Check current local pricing, availability, game performance, and compatibility before adopting or modifying a list.
Likewise, a mid-range guide’s value strategy can inform how you allocate money without making its exact parts or prices right for a different budget. Treat dated examples as evidence of a design approach, not a replacement for checking your own constraints.
