Build the uploader as three parts: an accessible browser interface for choosing files, an authenticated application server that checks upload policy and issues temporary permission, and a direct transfer from the browser to cloud object storage. The browser should never contain long-lived cloud credentials. Validate files in the browser for quick feedback, but enforce the real rules on the trusted server.

Choose an upload architecture

For most web apps, send file bytes directly from the browser to object storage rather than routing them through your application server. This keeps large transfers out of the server’s request path while leaving authentication, authorization, policy, and recording under your application’s control.

  1. The user signs in and selects or drops files.
  2. The browser sends file metadata and relevant application context to your authenticated upload API.
  3. The server authenticates the user, checks policy and quota, creates a non-colliding object key, and issues short-lived permission for the intended upload.
  4. The browser sends the bytes directly to storage using the signed URL or upload session.
  5. The browser reports completion. The server checks that the object exists and that its expected metadata or checksum is acceptable, then records it as accepted.

Treat the browser’s completion message as a request to verify, not proof that an acceptable object was uploaded. AWS documents that an S3 presigned URL permits upload without giving the recipient AWS credentials and is limited by the signing identity’s permissions. Google Cloud describes signed URLs as time-limited access to a specific resource. Because anyone who possesses a Google signed URL can use it while active, handle it as a bearer capability: deliver it over HTTPS, keep its scope and lifetime narrow, and avoid exposing it in logs or unnecessary client-visible places.

Keep signing and policy on the server

The browser should receive only the temporary access needed for a particular upload. Keep cloud credentials and URL signing in a trusted server environment. Before issuing permission, check the user’s authorization, file count, allowed types and sizes, and any quota or application-specific rules. Choose object keys on the server rather than trusting a client-supplied path or filename.

Build an accessible drop zone

Drag-and-drop is an input convenience, not a replacement for a file picker. Keep a standard <input type="file"> available so keyboard and assistive-technology users can choose files without dragging. Explain accepted file types and size limits near the control, and show each file’s status, progress, and any rejection reason.

The browser’s HTML Drag and Drop API provides the drag-enter, drag-over, drop, and drag-leave events for the drop target. A basic pattern is to prevent the browser’s default handling during drag-over, read the dropped files from the drop event, and pass them through the same selection and validation function used by the picker. Use a visual focus state for keyboard users and a clear drag-over state for pointer users.

Validate early, then validate again

Client-side checks make mistakes visible before a transfer starts. Check the number of selected files, the declared size, the filename extension, and the browser-reported media type. These are feedback checks only: a MIME label reported by the browser does not prove what the file contains, and client-side checks can be bypassed.

Apply the actual upload policy on the trusted server and account for how the application will store, preview, process, and serve the uploaded content. OWASP’s File Upload Cheat Sheet is a useful checklist for broader controls; the right safeguards depend on whether files are private or public and what the application does with them.

Define the browser-to-server contract

Keep the authorization API separate from the byte transfer. For example, the browser can send a request containing a file’s name, declared size, reported type, and the relevant record or folder identifier. The authenticated server should return the approved object identifier and the temporary upload URL or session details needed by the selected storage provider. This is an application contract, not a universal provider API.

Bind the authorization to the intended operation and object. If the server signs a request with a particular content type, the browser must send that exact Content-Type during the upload; AWS lists a mismatch as a cause of signature errors. Keep the original filename as display metadata if useful, but use a server-generated unique storage key to avoid accidental collisions.

Choose single-request, resumable, or multipart uploads

Choose a transfer mode by asking how much time a user can afford to lose if a connection drops and the transfer must restart. Also account for file sizes, user network conditions, provider behavior, and whether the browser SDK can preserve or resume session state.

Mode Best fit Trade-off
Single request Small files and transfers for which restarting from the beginning is acceptable. Simplest flow, but an interruption can mean retransmitting the file.
Resumable upload Files or connections where avoiding a full restart matters. More reliable for large transfers, but requires session handling; Google notes that it can also suit small files at the cost of an extra request.
Multipart upload Large objects that benefit from transfer in parts, sometimes in parallel. Requires management of parts and abandoned sessions; configure cleanup for incomplete uploads.

Google Cloud’s 2026 documentation gives illustrative single-request cutoffs of 30 MB at an average local upload speed of 8 Mbps and almost 2 GB at an in-region service average of 500 Mbps, each for a scenario willing to tolerate 30 seconds of lost transfer time. These are examples, not universal thresholds or benchmark results. Your cutoff should reflect actual user connections, regions, object sizes, provider behavior, and acceptable restart loss.

Do not generalize a library’s behavior into a cloud-wide rule. AWS Amplify Gen 2’s React storage documentation says it automatically uses S3 multipart upload for objects larger than 5 MB. That is Amplify’s documented behavior, not a general S3 threshold or recommendation. Amplify also warns that incomplete uploads can remain after events such as device disconnection or logout and recommends an S3 lifecycle rule to clean them up.

Track progress, errors, and recovery

Give each file its own state, such as queued, authorizing, uploading, verifying, complete, rejected, or failed. Show progress only when the chosen browser API or SDK reports it; distinguish transfer progress from server-side verification so users do not mistake bytes sent for an accepted file.

  • For a temporary authorization that has expired, request fresh authorization instead of retrying the expired URL indefinitely.
  • For a signature failure, check that the URL was not modified, the request uses the signed headers exactly, and the bucket region and expiry are correct. AWS specifically identifies content-type mismatch, expiry, URL changes, and region errors as troubleshooting checks.
  • For network interruptions, retry a single-request upload only when restarting is acceptable; use resumable or multipart support when restart cost is too high.
  • Allow cancellation where the chosen SDK and transfer mode support it. For multipart transfers, arrange cleanup of incomplete sessions and abandoned parts.
  • Show a clear reason for policy rejections and a distinct retry action for recoverable failures.

Prevent collisions and clean up abandoned work

Make object keys unique or deliberately define replacement behavior. AWS notes that uploading to an existing S3 key replaces that object. Google Cloud likewise says matching object names overwrite unless Object Versioning is enabled. If users need version history, configure it intentionally; otherwise, generate keys that cannot collide and associate them with the application record.

For multipart uploads, include operational cleanup rather than relying on users to finish every session. Configure the provider’s lifecycle cleanup for incomplete uploads where available, and ensure the application can cancel active work when the user abandons it. Monitor failed authorization, transfer, and verification states so that orphaned objects or records can be investigated.

Test the failure paths before release

  • Try both the keyboard-accessible picker and drag-and-drop; confirm they use the same validation and status handling.
  • Test a disallowed type, an oversized file, too many files, and a file whose reported type does not match its contents.
  • Attempt access as an unauthenticated user and as an authenticated user without permission for the target record.
  • Interrupt a transfer, let authorization expire, and test a request with a mismatched signed header.
  • Upload two files with the same original filename and confirm the storage keys do not overwrite one another unintentionally.
  • Confirm that the server verifies an uploaded object before marking the application record as accepted.
  • For multipart transfers, verify cancellation and lifecycle cleanup of abandoned uploads.

The HTML Drag and Drop API is documented by MDN; provider upload modes and overwrite behavior are documented by Google Cloud’s Cloud Storage object upload guidance; signed URL behavior is documented by Google Cloud and AWS; and OWASP provides broader file-upload security guidance.
