A balanced Onmyoji Arena team starts with five jobs, not five supposedly powerful shikigami: solo top lane, mid lane, jungle, bottom-lane marksman and bottom-lane support. Build around a clear win condition, then make sure the lineup has a frontline, dependable engage or peel, sustained damage, wave control and a jungler who can create objective pressure. Role labels such as Mage, Samurai, Ninja, Marksman, Tank and Support are useful filters, but they do not guarantee a particular lane assignment.
The right question is therefore not “Which five shikigami are strongest?” It is “Which five kits let this team win fights and lanes against this opponent?” The framework below gives you a repeatable way to answer that for normal games and ranked drafts.
Start with the five-position structure
Before choosing individual shikigami, assign the five positions that a standard team must cover. The position determines the job; the shikigami’s role tag is only a starting point for finding candidates.
| Position | Primary responsibilities | Questions to ask while drafting |
|---|---|---|
| Solo top lane | Hold a long lane, absorb pressure, provide frontline presence or side-lane threat and join fights without collapsing immediately. | Can this pick survive ranged harassment, clear safely and start or withstand a fight? |
| Mid lane | Clear waves, contest rotations and add burst, sustained magic damage or control. | Can the mid shikigami move first and still contribute if the enemy dives the bottom lane? |
| Jungle | Set the team’s tempo, threaten ganks, secure objectives and recover after an unsuccessful attack. | Does the pick clear reliably, reach a target and remain useful when the first gank fails? |
| Bottom-lane marksman | Supply reliable sustained damage, especially against durable targets, while scaling into extended fights. | What protects this damage source, and can it keep farming when the lane is pressured? |
| Bottom-lane support | Protect the marksman, create or deny engagements, provide healing, shielding, buffs or control and help establish vision and lane priority. | Does the kit solve the threat the enemy draft is presenting, rather than merely adding another damage profile? |
The six role filters—Mage, Samurai, Ninja, Marksman, Tank and Support—help narrow the roster, but a Tank is not automatically a top-lane pick and a Support label does not promise reliable initiation. Check the actual abilities, range, durability and current patch notes before locking a lane.

Cover six jobs before you chase synergy
A draft is balanced when its kits collectively perform the following jobs. One shikigami can cover more than one job, but every job needs a dependable answer.
1. Frontline and lane stability
Someone must occupy space long enough for the damage dealers to work. That can be a Tank, a durable Samurai or a fighter with sufficient survivability. Evaluate effective health, resistances, defensive cooldowns and the ability to remain near an enemy carry after the first exchange.
Do not assume that every Tank can begin a fight. Official support notes have acknowledged that some initiating or protective designs lacked the tools needed for their intended role. A durable body that cannot reach, hold or threaten a target may absorb damage without creating a winning moment.
2. Engage, peel or reliable control
Your composition needs at least one way to start a favorable fight or stop the enemy from starting theirs. It also needs a way to protect the primary damage dealer. Engage can be a long-range stun, displacement or forced movement; peel can be a shield, heal, body-block, knockback or threat that makes diving the carry costly.
Compare the range of the initiation, how consistently it lands and whether the enemy can cleanse, sidestep or interrupt it. A spectacular ultimate with a narrow hitbox is not equivalent to a shorter, repeatable control tool.
3. Sustained damage
Extended fights require a damage source that keeps functioning after the first spell rotation. A marksman is the usual answer, but a sustained-damage Mage or Samurai can fill the job if the rest of the draft protects the chosen range and damage type.
Hakuro is a useful example of why protection matters. Official notes described her as a core damage dealer whose survivability and mid-to-late damage were insufficient before January 2025 buffs to her slow and Ability 3 damage. Even after those changes, a low-durability carry still needs space, peel and time to attack.

4. Wave clear and pressure
Every lane must be able to clear without donating an easy kill. Mid and solo picks should survive harassment, remove a wave at a reasonable speed and contest rotations. A high-damage shikigami that cannot safely approach the wave may leave the team permanently late to objectives.
5. Jungle tempo and objective access
The jungler links the lanes. Clear speed, mobility, contest tools and recovery after a failed gank determine whether your team arrives first at neutral objectives. The March 2025 update introduced Hunt Reserve: jungle-knife users build stacks over time, reducing the punishment for failed attacks. That change makes recovery part of composition planning; a jungler that can safely resume farming after a miss has more strategic value than one that only looks strong when every gank succeeds.
6. A support function that matches the draft
Choose the support’s job deliberately. Healing suits attrition and front-to-back fights; shielding and buffing strengthen a carry’s damage window; initiation supports force the first favorable exchange; counter-engage supports punish dives. The August 2024 support redesign aimed to give these sub-types more distinct options instead of treating every Support as a generic ranged buffer.
Choose the team’s win condition first
Write one sentence describing how the lineup wins. This prevents five individually appealing picks from pulling the team in different directions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Front-to-back sustained damage: a frontline holds enemies in place while the marksman or sustained Mage attacks the nearest safe target.
- Pick and burst: reliable control isolates one target, then several damage dealers finish it before the opponent can respond.
- Dive: mobile shikigami enter together, overload the enemy back line and use defensive tools to survive the exit.
- Objective control: wave priority, zone control and a secure tool make contests around major objectives unfavorable for the opponent.
Once the win condition is chosen, select the main damage source and the protection or engage that allows it to operate. A front-to-back plan wants a stable frontline and peel; a pick plan values reliable, repeatable control; a dive plan needs coordinated entry and enough damage to finish before defensive cooldowns return.
Assemble the five picks in a practical order
Step 1: Lock the least-flexible damage source
Start with the bottom-lane marksman or another sustained-damage pick that your players can execute. This role usually has the clearest scaling requirement and the greatest need for protection. Note whether the chosen damage is physical or magic, whether it attacks from range and whether it can damage durable targets.
Step 2: Choose the jungler for tempo, not highlight clips
Select a jungler whose clear, movement and objective access fit the chosen win condition. A pick-oriented team needs a jungler that can arrive with control; an objective team needs reliable contest pressure; a scaling team needs a route that remains useful without forcing reckless level-one fights. Hunt Reserve makes failed attacks less punishing, but it does not remove the need to judge clear speed and map access.

Step 3: Add the support that solves the enemy threat
Pair the damage source with a support function. Against dive, prioritize peel, displacement, healing or shields. Against a fragile back line, initiation may be more valuable. Against sustained poke, healing and lane stability can matter more than a single all-in attempt. Consider whether the support can stay in range of the carry without being deleted first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStep 4: Fill the solo lane with frontline or durable pressure
Pick a Tank, Samurai or durable fighter that can hold the long lane and arrive at fights. Confirm that the shikigami has a realistic way to start, disrupt or survive combat; raw defensive statistics do not substitute for threat. If the solo pick is highly damage-focused, make sure another position supplies the missing frontline.
Step 5: Use mid to complete control and damage coverage
Mid should add the wave clear, rotation speed and damage type that the first four picks lack. If the team already has physical damage, a sustained or burst Mage can force more complicated defensive item choices. If the team already has reliable control, mid can prioritize safe damage and lane priority instead of adding a redundant stun.
Step 6: Perform a five-question audit before confirming
- Who stands in front of the main damage source when the fight begins?
- Who starts the fight, and who stops a dive if the enemy starts it?
- Can the team clear side and mid waves without exposing a carry?
- Does the damage mix punish opponents who build directly against one type?
- Can every player execute the assigned job in the selected lane?
Compare candidate lineups on the same axes
When deciding between two possible teams, score both lineups against identical criteria rather than arguing about which individual shikigami looks stronger.
| Axis | What to measure | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Frontline reliability | Effective health, resistances, defensive cooldowns and time remaining in the fight after engaging. | The only frontliner disappears before the damage dealers can attack. |
| Engage and peel | Range, crowd-control reliability, cooldown frequency and protection for the carry. | The team has damage but no dependable way to begin or disengage. |
| Damage profile | Sustained versus burst, physical versus magic and ability to damage durable targets. | All five picks lose value when opponents stack one defensive type. |
| Lane stability | Wave clear, resistance to ranged harassment, recall pressure and rotation access. | A lane loses every wave and arrives late to each objective. |
| Objective and jungle tempo | Clear speed, mobility, contest tools and recovery after a failed gank. | The jungler must win the first attack or becomes irrelevant. |
| Carry safety | Shields, heals, displacement, body-blocking and threat that forces enemies away. | The marksman has no answer to a single dive cooldown. |
| Execution fit | Whether each player can consistently perform the shikigami’s job under pressure. | The theoretical synergy depends on combos the player rarely lands. |
Patch-aware examples from current balance direction
Enmusubi: close-range protection with a positioning cost
Official notes identified Enmusubi’s short casting range and low mid-game durability, then increased her shields and late-game control. She can fit a close-range protection or control plan, but the player must fight near the action. Draft her when the team can create a safe space for that proximity; do not treat her as a long-range answer to every engage.
Hakuro: high-value damage that needs a safety net
Hakuro’s official balance description calls her a core damage dealer with limited survivability and insufficient mid-to-late damage before improvements to her slow and Mind’s Eye in January 2025. Her presence raises the value of dependable peel and a frontline that keeps divers away long enough for repeated attacks.
Higanbana: sustained area pressure
May 2025 notes describe Higanbana as a sustained-damage Mage and increased her Flower Seal damage. That makes her relevant when comparing area pressure and extended-fight damage against a burst-oriented mid pick. She is most useful when the team can hold enemies inside her damage zones rather than forcing every fight into a short assassination attempt.

Samurai X: a frontline option affected by tankiness changes
The same May 2025 update reduced Samurai X’s HP growth, damage sharing, armor boost and slow immunity after excessive tankiness. Treat him as a patch-sensitive frontline option, not a permanent default. Recheck whether he can still absorb the amount of pressure your planned fight pattern requires.
Kusa: healing and control support
May 2025 changes improved Kusa’s healing, reduced mana costs and lengthened her initial immobilization. Those adjustments support a healing-and-control support archetype: she can sustain a carry while offering a more meaningful early control window. Her value still depends on whether the team benefits from staying in a fight instead of needing immediate long-range initiation.

Account for the 2025 systemic balance changes
The March 28, 2025 season update listed HP Growth 1.2, Armor Growth 1.2 and Magic Resist Growth 1.2 as systemic durability changes. The same update explained that excessive burst damage had been shortening survival time, reducing reaction windows and limiting strategic depth. In practical drafting terms, check whether your team can survive the opening burst long enough to use its sustained damage and control. A composition built entirely around instant damage may become less reliable when opponents have more room to react.
These numbers describe a system change, not a promise that every shikigami became equally durable. Read them alongside each character’s current statistics and patch notes. A carry with limited survivability still needs protection, while a frontline pick whose defensive tools were reduced may no longer cover the whole team’s durability requirement alone.

- Lane assignment: every player knows the intended lane and the fallback plan if the opponent contests it.
- Win condition: the team can state whether it wants sustained front-to-back fights, picks, dives or objective control.
- Damage: at least one dependable sustained source exists, and the physical/magic mix is not needlessly one-sided.
- Frontline: someone can absorb attention without instantly giving up the fight.
- Engage: there is a reliable first action with a realistic range and hit rate.
- Peel: the main damage source has a response to dives or hard control.
- Wave clear: mid and solo can clear safely enough to move first when needed.
- Jungle plan: the jungler has a clear route to farm, gank and contest objectives, including a recovery route after failure.
- Execution: each player can perform the job on the selected shikigami, not merely describe an ideal combo.
- Patch check: confirm recent balance changes before assuming an old tier-list reputation still applies.
Common composition failures and fixes
Five damage dealers, no way to begin or leave
Individual damage does not create an engagement. Add a pick with dependable control or replace one damage slot with a durable Samurai, Tank or counter-engage Support. The goal is to create a safe attack window, not to maximize the number of damage icons.
A Tank that cannot threaten anyone
If the frontline only absorbs damage and never forces movement, opponents can ignore it and attack your carry. Check whether the Tank has initiation, disruption or enough threat to make walking past it dangerous. If not, pair it with a separate engager or choose a more active frontline.

A carry left alone against dive
When the enemy has mobile assassins or hard engage, shift the support choice toward shields, heals, displacement or counter-initiation. A damage increase is not an upgrade if the carry dies before using it.

All physical or all magic damage
Stacking one type lets opponents buy directly against the composition. Keep at least one meaningful alternative damage source or select kits that damage durable targets in different ways. Do not force a nominally mixed draft if the secondary source cannot function in its lane; practical output matters more than labels.
A jungler dependent on a perfect first gank
Choose clear speed, mobility and objective access over a single flashy combo. Hunt Reserve reduces the cost of failed attacks, but a composition still needs a jungler who can return to the map with useful tempo instead of waiting for another unlikely opening.
Drafting by role tag alone
Role tags are filters, not lane assignments. Verify wave clear, range, durability, control and matchup practicality. A Support that cannot protect the chosen carry or a Mage that cannot safely clear mid may be correct in theory and disastrous in the assigned lane.

After each enemy pick, identify the threat that can most quickly break your win condition. If it is a diver, increase peel and frontline reliability. If it is a poke lane, value healing, shields, wave clear and engage range. If it is a durable front line, preserve sustained damage and avoid replacing your only damage source with another burst pick. If it is a split-pressure plan, prioritize rotation speed and a solo pick that can hold the side lane without constant assistance.
Adapt the function, not just the name. You do not always need a different shikigami; sometimes the correct response is changing who initiates, which lane receives early jungle attention or whether the team groups for front-to-back fights instead of chasing isolated targets.
Why there is no permanent “best five”
No authoritative universal best-five statistic or permanent win-rate list establishes one lineup as correct for every patch, lane matchup and player pool. Balance updates alter durability, control and damage, while execution quality changes the value of difficult kits. A team that is theoretically optimal but unfamiliar to its players is often weaker than a slightly less fashionable lineup whose jobs are clear and consistently performed.
Use the five-position framework, define the win condition, cover the six jobs and compare candidates on the same axes. That process produces a ranked-viable draft without pretending that one fixed list can survive every patch or opponent.
