A strong Battle Cats lineup starts with the stage, not with a favorite unit. Read the enemy traits, assign every favorite a job, then fill the missing roles with two or three inexpensive blockers, a dependable general attacker, a ranged or area-damage unit, and at least one stage-specific counter. Add control, support, or a Cat Combo only after those essentials are covered.

What a balanced Battle Cats team actually does

“Balanced” does not mean using ten unrelated Cats or trying to counter every enemy type at once. It means your lineup has a plan for the threats on the selected stage and enough redundancy to keep that plan working when the battle becomes crowded.

A practical general-purpose structure contains:

  • Two or three inexpensive blockers, commonly called meatshields, to keep enemies away from your damage dealers.
  • One sustained attacker that remains useful even when the stage does not match its specialty.
  • One ranged or area-damage Cat to attack safely or hit groups.
  • One or more Cats that specifically answer the dominant enemy trait or traits.
  • Optional control, debuff, support, or Cat Combo pieces that do not remove a required combat role.

Your favorite Cats belong in the lineup when they fill distinct jobs. If several favorites all perform the same job, keep the one whose range, survivability, recharge, cost, or matchup is most useful on that stage. Replace redundancy before replacing the only blocker, ranged answer, or trait counter.

Choose the stage before choosing the lineup

Open the stage information and identify the enemies you are actually expected to face. The game’s enemy traits include Red, Floating, Black, Metal, Angel, Alien, Zombie, Aku, Relic, and Traitless. A stage dominated by one of these traits should influence at least one of your ten slots.

Do not build a single “universal” deck that attempts to cover every trait. That usually leaves too few slots for frontline protection and dependable damage. Instead, keep a broad core and change the specialist slots when you change stages.

Read the threat, not just the trait label

Trait matching is the starting point, not the entire decision. Ask what the enemies do to your formation:

  • Do they advance quickly enough to overwhelm a single blocker?
  • Do they arrive in groups that require area damage?
  • Do they attack from a distance, making a short-range favorite difficult to deploy safely?
  • Does one high-pressure enemy require a specific counter while the rest of the wave is relatively ordinary?
  • Will a control effect such as slow, freeze, weaken, or knockback prevent a collapse that raw damage cannot?

This keeps you from selecting a trait counter that technically matches the stage but cannot survive long enough, reach the enemy, or contribute to the rest of the wave.

Use the Cat Guide as your roster map

The in-game Cat Guide organizes the Cats available to you, while your battle lineup can use only Cats you have unlocked. Review the Guide before making a “perfect” plan so that every proposed role has a real candidate in your account.

Make a short roster list with one line per unlocked favorite. Record the job it can perform, its most important limitation, and the stages or traits where it is strongest. This prevents a common mistake: reserving several slots for favorites and discovering at the formation screen that no slot remains for a blocker or a required counter.

Enemy traits and the counter slot

The following framework helps you decide whether a favorite can serve as a specialist or whether another Cat must take that slot.

Enemy trait What to check in your roster How it affects the lineup
Red Effective damage, resistance, or control against Red enemies Reserve a specialist slot when Red enemies are the stage’s main pressure.
Floating An ability that improves damage, survival, or control against Floating enemies Use the specialist when Floating enemies are the reason your general core fails.
Black A reliable answer to fast or high-pressure Black enemies Do not sacrifice all frontline protection just to add a second damage dealer.
Metal The relevant effective ability or control option for Metal enemies Match the counter to the stage rather than carrying it in every deck.
Angel Trait-effective damage, resistance, or disruption Keep one answer available if Angel enemies are central to the stage.
Alien An ability that improves the matchup against Alien enemies Replace a redundant favorite with the Alien answer when needed.
Zombie Trait-effective damage, resistance, or control Use the counter when Zombie enemies are the source of repeated pushes.
Aku An ability designed to handle Aku threats Give the specialist a slot only when the stage demands it.
Relic A dependable Relic matchup or control effect Keep the answer in the deck for Relic-focused stages, not as permanent filler.
Traitless General damage, range, survivability, or control rather than a trait bonus Lean on your general-purpose core because a trait-specific bonus may not apply.

A counter can work through effective damage, resistance, control, or another ability that improves the matchup. The important question is whether it solves the stage’s primary problem consistently enough to justify its slot.

Give every favorite a job

Classify each favorite before you place it. Use one primary label even if a Cat has secondary benefits; this exposes duplicated roles.

Blocker

A blocker’s job is to stand between enemies and your valuable attackers. Inexpensive, quickly recharging units are useful because you can deploy them repeatedly. A sturdier wall can be worth a slot when ordinary blockers disappear too quickly. Your favorite does not need high damage to be valuable here; keeping the line intact is the contribution.

General attacker

A general attacker supplies damage on stages where no single trait bonus defines the battle. Choose one that can be deployed often enough and survive long enough to keep contributing. This is your baseline plan when the specialist is waiting for money, recharging, or facing an enemy outside its ideal matchup.

Ranged attacker

A ranged Cat attacks from farther back, reducing the chance that every enemy reaches it at once. Range can matter more than theoretical damage when the frontline is unstable. Protect the ranged unit with blockers instead of expecting it to hold the line alone.

Area-damage unit

Area damage is valuable when several enemies arrive together. It can also prevent weak enemies from accumulating in front of your attackers. Do not assume every ranged unit is an area attacker; identify what your favorite actually contributes and fill the missing function separately.

Control or debuff support

Slow, freeze, weaken, knockback, and similar effects buy time or reduce pressure. Control is strongest when it complements your damage pattern: a slow effect can help a short-range attacker reach its target, while a knockback can create space for a fragile ranged unit. Avoid carrying several control Cats that all fail against the same enemy situation.

Trait specialist

A specialist is selected because the stage contains a trait it handles effectively. It may deal more damage, take less damage, or control that trait more reliably. A specialist that has no meaningful target on the chosen stage is usually a poor use of a slot, even if it is one of your strongest Cats in another battle.

Cat Combo component

A favorite can also contribute to a Cat Combo, but the combo is a bonus layer. Keep the component only when the resulting bonus improves the stage plan more than a direct combat Cat would.

Slots Recommended job Why it is there
1–2 Inexpensive frontline blockers They keep enemies away from your attackers and can be redeployed repeatedly.
3 Third blocker or sturdier wall Add this when the stage pushes hard or two blockers vanish too quickly.
4 General-purpose damage dealer Provides a baseline plan outside the specialist matchup.
5 Ranged or area attacker Attacks from safety, clears groups, or supplies the missing damage pattern.
6 Primary trait counter Answers the enemy type that makes this stage difficult.
7 Control or debuff support Slows, freezes, weakens, knocks back, or otherwise prevents a collapse.
8–10 Second trait answer, stronger attacker, additional control, or combo pieces Use these slots to address the stage’s remaining problem without deleting a core role.

This is a role template, not a universal best team. The Cats you have unlocked and the traits on the selected stage determine the final choices.

Build the team step by step

1. Mark the dominant traits

Write down the traits that appear often or create the most dangerous pushes. If a stage contains several traits, identify the one that actually defeats your current team rather than trying to counter every label equally.

2. Lock the frontline first

Choose two inexpensive blockers. Add a third blocker or a sturdier wall when enemies break through before your attackers can fire. If you remove a blocker to fit a favorite, watch whether the favorite survives long enough to repay the lost protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Place one dependable attacker

Select a damage dealer that remains useful when the stage is not an ideal matchup. This unit gives you a way to make progress while your specialist is unavailable or when mixed enemies appear.

4. Add range or area coverage

Decide what the first attacker cannot do. If it is short-ranged, add a ranged unit. If it struggles against groups, add area damage. If it already covers both functions, choose a different role rather than duplicating it.

5. Reserve the primary counter

Put in the Cat whose effective ability, resistance, control, or damage bonus addresses the dominant trait. A favorite can fill this slot when it truly has the required matchup; otherwise, use the best available specialist and keep the favorite elsewhere.

6. Add control only when it solves a visible problem

Choose slow, freeze, weaken, knockback, or another control effect when the stage’s pressure cannot be handled by damage alone. Control should buy time for your existing attackers, not merely add another attractive ability that overlaps with them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Fill the remaining slots by largest failure

After the core is assembled, identify what still causes losses. Add a second trait answer if one counter is overwhelmed, another attacker if damage is too low, or an additional blocker if the line repeatedly collapses. If none of those problems exists, a support Cat or combo piece may be worthwhile.

8. Test one change at a time

Use a short battle or a replayable attempt to observe the first failure. If the frontline disappears before your attackers act, change a blocker or add control. If the line holds but enemies accumulate, improve area damage. If one trait enemy survives every wave, replace the least useful redundant unit with its counter.

How to choose between two favorite Cats

When two favorites compete for one slot, compare them against the stage rather than against each other in the abstract.

Decision factor Question to ask Preferred choice
Role coverage Does one fill a missing blocker, ranged, control, or trait-counter role? Favor the Cat that closes the gap in your lineup.
Matchup Which one is effective against the dominant traits? Favor the reliable counter when that trait is the stage’s main threat.
Reliability Can it be deployed often enough, reach the target, and survive long enough? Favor the unit that contributes consistently rather than only in ideal moments.
Cost and recharge Can your economy support repeated deployment? Favor the option your stage plan can actually field on time.
Range and survivability Will it attack before being hit, and can blockers protect it? Favor the better fit for the stage’s distance and pressure.
Redundancy Do you already have several units doing the same thing? Favor a distinct job unless the duplicated role is the stage’s known weakness.
Combo value Does its combo bonus materially improve this plan? Keep the combo piece only when the bonus is worth the combat slot.

A favorite that is slightly weaker on paper can be the better choice if it supplies the only missing function. Conversely, a powerful favorite should sit out when it duplicates three other units and leaves the team without a counter.

Use Cat Combos after the combat core

Cat Combos become available after you beat Empire of Cats Chapter 1. They work only on the top row of a battle lineup and can occupy up to five unit slots. Because those slots are unavailable for ordinary deployment, treat a combo as an investment rather than free decoration.

The Cat Combo reference records 247 combos as of version 14.6 in a 2026 search capture. The same reference notes that one Cat can contribute to multiple combos and that multiple combos can be active. This makes combo planning flexible, but it also increases the temptation to remove a needed role.

When a combo earns its slots

  • The bonus directly supports the stage, such as attack, defense, speed, recharge, or a trait-effect improvement.
  • The combo pieces are not replacing your only blocker, ranged attacker, or trait answer.
  • Your remaining deployment slots still provide enough damage and protection for the stage.
  • The combo improves several units you already plan to use instead of helping a single unit that rarely survives.

When to skip it

Skip a combo when the top row would remove the only role that prevents your normal failure. A larger bonus cannot compensate for a formation that has no way to stop enemies reaching its damage dealers.

Practical layouts for common stage problems

Fast frontline pressure

Use three blockers, a general attacker, and a control or ranged unit that can keep firing while the line is crowded. Reserve the specialist for the trait causing the rush. The extra blocker is more valuable than a second similar attacker if your formation collapses before damage is delivered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Large mixed waves

Keep two blockers, a general attacker, and an area-damage unit as the stable core. Use one primary trait counter and one flexible support or second counter. Mixed waves punish a deck built entirely around one trait, so retain at least one unit that works against enemies outside the main matchup.

One dominant trait

Use the normal core, then dedicate one or two slots to the relevant specialist if the trait appears repeatedly or includes the stage’s most dangerous enemy. Remove duplicate attackers before removing the second blocker.

Ranged or fragile favorites

Protect the favorite with two or three blockers and consider control that keeps enemies at a safe distance. Do not count the favorite as a frontline unit merely because it deals high damage; its value depends on surviving long enough to attack.

Stages where general damage is enough

Against a stage without a decisive trait threat, prioritize reliable cost, recharge, range, survivability, and area coverage. Use the open slots for a second attacker, control, or a combo only after the basic formation is stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diagnose failures instead of changing everything

After a loss, identify the first point at which the plan stopped working.

  • Blockers die immediately: add another inexpensive blocker, a sturdier wall, or control. Do not begin by adding another damage dealer.
  • Attackers survive but waves accumulate: add area damage or replace a single-target duplicate.
  • The specialist is rarely useful: verify that the stage’s dominant threat is actually the trait it counters; otherwise use a general attacker or a different counter.
  • The line holds but the enemy does not fall: improve sustained damage, range, or the relevant trait matchup.
  • Your economy cannot field the deck: favor units with manageable cost and recharge, and remove a high-cost duplicate before touching the frontline.
  • A combo leaves too few combat slots: move the combo to another lineup or remove it until the stage is already under control.

Change one or two slots at a time so you know which decision fixed or worsened the problem. A complete rebuild hides the cause of the loss and makes future stages harder to learn.

Keep a flexible core and rotate specialists

Save a dependable core of blockers, one general attacker, and one ranged or area unit. Then rotate the specialist and the last few slots according to the stage. This is more efficient than maintaining a separate favorite-only deck that fails whenever enemy traits change.

When a newly unlocked Cat fills a role you already have, compare it using role coverage, matchup, reliability, redundancy, and combo value. Keep the newcomer only when it improves a specific stage problem. A favorite can remain in reserve without being permanently assigned to every lineup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pre-battle checklist

  1. Read the stage’s enemy list and mark the dominant traits.
  2. Confirm that every chosen Cat is unlocked in your Cat Guide.
  3. Assign each favorite one primary job.
  4. Place two inexpensive blockers before adding optional favorites.
  5. Include one general attacker that works outside a narrow matchup.
  6. Add ranged or area coverage for the stage’s distance and wave size.
  7. Reserve a trait counter for the enemy type that creates the most pressure.
  8. Add control or debuff only when it addresses a visible failure.
  9. Evaluate Cat Combos last, remembering that their top-row slots cannot serve as ordinary combat slots.
  10. After a test battle, change the role that failed first rather than replacing the entire team.

The result is a lineup that still feels like yours: favorites stay when they perform distinct, useful jobs, while the surrounding slots provide the blockers, baseline damage, range, control, and trait coverage that let those favorites work.
