Install Zeal, download the documentation sets you need from File → Docset Library, and search them locally without an internet connection. Zeal stores searchable Dash-format docsets on your computer, with filters such as cpp:vector for one set or python, django:string for several.

What Zeal does

Zeal is a desktop offline documentation browser inspired by Dash. It provides a personal, searchable reference library that remains available when you are disconnected. It does not automatically mirror arbitrary websites: you choose documentation sets and download them into the application.

Zeal supports the Dash docset format. The project also documents how to create your own docsets using Dash’s docset-generation guidance, which is useful for internal APIs, private projects, or documentation that is not in the public catalog.

Install Zeal for your operating system

Use the project’s official download page to choose the current package for your system. Available routes can change, and some packages are maintained by contributors rather than the Zeal project itself.

System Documented installation options Important detail
Windows Installer or portable archive Windows 10 version 1809 or later is required according to the project README. The portable build keeps settings and docsets in the application directory.
Linux AppImage or distribution-specific packages Check the download page for the package matching your distribution; maintenance status can differ by package.
BSD BSD-specific routes listed by the project Follow the current instructions for your BSD variant.

A portable Windows installation can be useful on a managed or temporary machine because it is designed to run without a conventional installation. Keeping data in the application directory also makes the setup easier to move, but that directory must remain writable and should be included in any backup plan.

Download documentation sets

  1. Launch Zeal.
  2. Open File → Docset Library.
  3. Select each documentation set you want.
  4. Click Download and wait for the sets to finish downloading.
  5. Close the library window and search from Zeal’s main interface.

Only the sets you select are downloaded, so plan local storage around the technologies you actually use. If a topic is missing, return to the Docset Library and check whether another set covers it.

How broad is the catalog?

The Zeal homepage displayed 981 docsets in 2026, including entries identified as user-contributed and sets provided by Dash. This is a changing catalog count, not a fixed guarantee; verify the current list before relying on a particular technology being available.

Search one or many docsets

You can search normally across the docsets installed on your computer. Prefix a query with a docset name and a colon to limit results to that set:

  • cpp:vector searches for “vector” in the C++ docset.
  • python:pprint is the command-line example shown in the project README.

To search several sets at once, separate their names with commas:

python,django:string

This filtering is valuable when common terms produce noise across languages or frameworks. Use the exact docset names recognized by your installation.

Use Zeal from an editor or with a hotkey

The Debian zeal(1) manual describes a configurable global hotkey, multi-docset searching, and integration with Emacs, Sublime Text, and Vim. Availability and behavior can vary with the distribution package and your editor configuration, so verify the setting in the package and integration you install.

When integration helps

  • Use a global hotkey to look up a symbol without switching through a browser.
  • Open documentation from an editor while keeping source code visible.
  • Search several related sets when an API spans a language, framework, and database.

Keep offline documentation useful

Download deliberately

Install only the docsets relevant to your projects. This reduces local storage use and keeps search results focused.

Best Value

Refresh when accuracy matters

Offline content is only as current as the docset you downloaded. Check the Docset Library periodically for updates, especially after upgrading a language or framework.

Plan for disconnected machines

Download and verify the needed sets before traveling or entering an environment without network access. For portable Windows use, keep the application directory intact because it contains the settings and docsets.

Use custom docsets for private material

If your team maintains internal API references, follow the Dash docset-generation guidance supported by Zeal and distribute the resulting docset through your normal internal process.

Licensing and project boundaries

The Zeal repository identifies the application as licensed under the GNU GPL version 3 or later. Bundled third-party components can have their own licenses, so review those terms separately when redistributing a build or packaging Zeal for an organization.

Zeal is best suited to developers and technical teams who need fast local reference material. It is not a general-purpose offline copy of the web: coverage depends on available docsets, and freshness depends on maintaining them.

Is Zeal a good fit?

Question What to check
Does it run on your machine? Confirm the current installer or package on the official download page and, on Windows, the Windows 10 version 1809 minimum.
Are your technologies covered? Search the current Docset Library catalog; its entries and count can change.
Can you work offline? Download the required sets in advance and ensure the local data directory is available.
Will it fit your workflow? Evaluate prefix and multi-docset search, plus any hotkey or editor integration supported by your package.
Do you need private documentation? Use the supported Dash docset-generation approach to create a custom set.
