Safari, Firefox, and Chrome can all keep much of a browsing session out of the browser’s regular history on a Mac, but private mode does not make you anonymous. Safari and Firefox describe built-in tracker defenses for private windows; Chrome’s Incognito mode focuses on a separate temporary session. In every browser, websites and network operators may still observe activity, and downloaded files remain on your Mac.
What private browsing does—and does not do
Private browsing is primarily a local-device control. After you close the private session, the browser removes or avoids saving specified history and session data, helping keep ordinary browsing records out of the regular profile on a shared Mac. It does not prevent visited websites, services embedded in those sites, or network operators from observing activity.
Mozilla says an internet provider, employer, and websites can still gather information during Firefox private browsing. Google likewise notes that Incognito does not make users invisible; sites visited, Google services used on those sites, and network managers such as employers, schools, or internet providers may see activity. Mozilla explains the limits of private browsing, and Google describes what Chrome Incognito does and does not hide.

How to choose a private mode for your situation
For a quick separate session on a shared Mac
Any of the three modes can help keep ordinary browsing history and session cookies out of the regular profile after the session. Close every private or Incognito window when finished; Chrome specifically clears its temporary session data once all Incognito windows are closed.
For built-in tracker protections
Safari and Firefox document tracking-related defenses in private mode. Safari’s advanced protection removes known tracking parameters and blocks connections to data-collection companies using advanced fingerprinting. Firefox says its private windows shield users by default from third-party cookies and content trackers. The descriptions differ, and no comparative effectiveness ranking is established.

If Safari’s advanced protection interferes with a site feature, Apple’s documentation explains the feature and its controls. You can try the site workflow and adjust the protection as Apple documents, rather than assuming every compatibility problem is caused by private browsing generally.
For protecting open pages from someone who walks up
Safari’s lockable private windows are a separate shared-device safeguard on supported Macs. Apple describes how to lock and unlock private windows in its guide to locking private browsing windows. Lock the Mac when stepping away as well: private mode alone does not conceal pages already visible on an unlocked screen.

For a temporary Chrome session
Incognito is straightforward when you want a separate session without automatically signing into sites. Close every Incognito window to end the session. If a downloaded file should not remain on the Mac, remove the file separately.

Downloads
Safari, Firefox, and Chrome all leave downloaded files on the device. Safari omits them from its downloads list, while Firefox does not retain download-list entries after the private session; neither behavior deletes the files themselves. Chrome also leaves downloaded files in place. Delete any file separately if it should not remain on the Mac.

Bookmarks and saved items
Firefox bookmarks and Chrome bookmarks or Reading List items created in private sessions remain available outside those sessions. Private mode is not a way to save something temporarily and have it disappear automatically.
Network and website visibility
Private windows do not stop websites, embedded services, an employer or school network, or an internet provider from observing activity. A VPN is an adjacent network-privacy tool: it changes the network path, but it does not erase browser records or guarantee anonymity. Safari’s IP-address hiding is also separate from Private Browsing: Apple says hiding an IP address from trackers and websites requires iCloud Private Relay and an iCloud+ subscription, with regional availability limits. Practical steps before you close the Mac
- Start the right window. In Safari, use File > New Private Window; in Chrome, use Menu > New Incognito window or Command-Shift-N; in Firefox, open a Private Window from the browser controls.
- Check whether the site works as expected. Temporary cookies and site data may mean you have to sign in again, while Safari’s advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection can affect some site features.
- Close every private or Incognito window. This ends the temporary session and triggers the browser’s documented cleanup behavior.
- Remove anything that should not remain. Delete downloaded files separately, and do not rely on private mode to discard bookmarks or saved items created during the session.
- Secure the screen if you are stepping away. Lock the Mac; if using Safari on a supported configuration, lock its private windows too.
