To broadcast a radio station on YouTube with a visualizer, send your station audio and a visualizer scene from an encoder such as OBS to YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, create an encoder stream, copy its server URL and stream key into OBS, build a scene that includes both the program audio and an audio-reactive visual, then preview and start the broadcast. Test the full setup before scheduling a public launch, and confirm that you have the rights needed for the music you plan to play.
1. Check whether your channel can go live
YouTube’s current getting-started guidance says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. It also says users must be at least 16 to live stream. Check eligibility in YouTube Studio before you plan a scheduled broadcast: YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guide.
2. Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio, choose Create, then Go live.
- In the Live Control Room, create or select an encoder stream. For a scheduled show, set up the event there and use its encoder stream details.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key into the corresponding stream settings in OBS. Use the values shown for that stream rather than guessing or reusing details from another event.
- Keep the stream key private. It lets an encoder send a feed to the right YouTube stream. If it is exposed, a channel owner or manager can reset it; see YouTube’s guidance on stream keys.
3. Build an OBS scene with station audio and a visualizer
Add the actual radio program feed
Add the audio source that carries the station program to your OBS scene. This might be an audio input or another feed in your setup; the important check is that the source OBS captures is the same audio YouTube should hear. Monitor it in OBS and confirm levels are active without clipping. A microphone is optional for a music-only broadcast. Add one only if you want live announcements, voiceovers, or station identifications.
Add and position the visualizer
One available option is Waveform, an OBS plugin that visualizes an audio source. Its listing describes frequency-spectrum graphs, bar and circular forms, meters, and waveform display. The listing reports version 1.9.1, updated July 14, 2026, for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with OBS 27.0.0 as the minimum version. Add the visualizer as a source, choose the intended audio source if its settings allow it, then resize and position it in the scene. Make sure the picture fills or deliberately frames the video canvas and remains visible at the intended output resolution. A visualizer that reacts to the wrong audio source—or no source—can look fine in a static scene but fail once the station plays.
Test the scene before relying on it
Run a private or unlisted test with representative station audio. Check from another device that the YouTube stream contains both audible program audio and a moving visualizer. Plugin behavior can vary with operating system, OBS version, and source configuration; confirm compatibility and stability on your own setup rather than assuming every mode behaves identically. YouTube also recommends testing with representative audio and movement and checking the preview before going live: YouTube’s encoder setup and troubleshooting guidance.

4. Choose video and audio settings that your connection can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingestion. Set the encoder codec and profile to match the recommendations for that codec, resolution, and frame rate; the following video rates are YouTube’s recommended H.264 values, not universal rates for AV1 or H.265.

For other codecs, use the corresponding row in YouTube’s encoder settings table. Its general guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 for video; AAC or MP3 for audio; constant bitrate; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. For stereo audio, it lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate.

Measure your available upload speed and leave 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the stream’s total bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Include audio and any other outgoing traffic when judging whether the connection has enough headroom. A stable wired connection is often operationally helpful, but a test under the actual conditions of the broadcast is the useful check: watch for dropped frames, buffering, and interrupted audio before going public.
5. Preview, go live, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Start streaming from OBS so it sends the scene to YouTube.
- Wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the visualizer is reacting, the station audio is audible, and the framing is correct.
- When the preview is healthy, click Go live in YouTube Studio. Keep monitoring stream health and the program feed during the broadcast.
- To finish, click End stream in YouTube Studio and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic archiving outcome for a longer stream. See YouTube’s live control guidance.
Music rights are separate from the technical setup
A stream key, visualizer, or artist credit does not grant permission to broadcast a recording. The technical setup guidance does not establish whether a particular catalog, recording, territory, or continuous radio-style broadcast is cleared.
