For a dependable mug of Yorkshire Tea, use one tea bag, freshly drawn water brought to a full boil, and a four-to-five-minute infusion. Start at four minutes for a balanced black tea; continue toward five minutes when you want more body or plan to add milk. Remove the bag before adding milk.
Water quality changes the result as much as timing. If hard water makes your tea taste mineral-like, dark, thick or leaves scum on the surface, compare filtered water with your tap water or use a blend made for hard-water areas.
The basic method
This procedure follows the preparation guidance in Taylors of Harrogate’s product specification and the UK Tea & Infusions Association’s mug-brewing advice.
Recommended Free Tools
- Draw fresh water. Fill the kettle with only the amount you need. Freshly drawn water retains more dissolved oxygen than water that has been repeatedly boiled.
- Boil the water. For black tea, UK Tea & Infusions Association guidance gives a recommended range of 90–98°C. In an ordinary kettle, this means using the water immediately after it reaches a boil rather than letting it sit until lukewarm.
- Add one tea bag to the mug. One bag per mug is the documented starting ratio.
- Pour the boiled water directly over the bag. Direct contact wets the bag and starts extraction evenly.
- Infuse for four minutes, then decide whether to continue. Taste at four minutes. Continue toward five minutes if you want a stronger, fuller cup or need the tea to stand up to milk.
- Remove the bag before finishing the drink. Add milk and sugar only if you want them. Their amounts are matters of personal preference, not fixed Yorkshire Tea instructions.
Why the ratio, temperature and time matter
One bag per mug
The one-bag-per-mug instruction assumes a normal mug rather than a very large travel cup or a small teacup. A substantially larger volume of water will dilute the same bag, while a small cup will produce a more concentrated drink. If your mug is unusually large and the drink tastes thin, first check the water volume before blaming the tea.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
You can use a second bag as a practical way to increase strength in an oversized mug, but that is a user adjustment rather than a cited manufacturer requirement. Keep the documented one-bag ratio as your baseline so changes remain easy to judge.
Freshly boiled water
Water that is merely hot extracts less effectively than water close to boiling, which is why the specification says to pour freshly boiled water directly onto the bag. Boil only what you need: repeated boiling reduces oxygen, according to UK Tea & Infusions Association guidance, and it also wastes energy.
Do not leave a freshly boiled kettle standing for several minutes before pouring. If you are making several mugs, measure the required quantity, boil it once and pour promptly into each prepared mug.

Four to five minutes
The package range is four to five minutes “according to taste.” Four minutes is a useful starting point for a strong but controlled cup. The additional minute gives more body and is often useful when milk will dilute the tea’s intensity.
There is no published Yorkshire Tea experiment establishing one universally perfect second-by-second time. Your mug size, water chemistry and preference determine where you should stop within the documented range.
How to make it strong without bitterness
Strength and harshness are not the same thing. A longer infusion extracts more from the bag, but leaving it indefinitely can produce an astringent, rough taste. Keep your first adjustment inside the four-to-five-minute window.
| Adjustment | Likely result | Best use | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infuse for 4 minutes | Balanced flavour with less intensity | Drinking it black or when you prefer a cleaner finish | Within the Taylors of Harrogate 4–5-minute instruction |
| Infuse for 5 minutes | More body and a stronger taste | Adding milk or when four minutes tastes light | Within the same documented range |
| Use a larger mug with one bag | More diluted tea | When you want a larger drink but accept a lighter cup | A practical consequence of the one-bag-per-mug ratio; no official mug volume is specified |
| Add a second bag | More tea relative to water | Very large mugs or unusually strong preference | Practical user choice, not a cited manufacturer instruction |
Before increasing the tea quantity, confirm that the water was genuinely freshly boiled and that the bag was submerged. A weak cup is often caused by too much water or a delayed pour rather than a faulty bag.

If the cup tastes harsh, shorten the infusion toward four minutes. Do not compensate for bitterness with a much longer brew; that usually increases the problem.
When and how to add milk
For a mug brewed with a bag, the UK Tea & Infusions Association’s preferred sequence is “Milk in last is best.” Brew the tea first, remove the bag, then add milk. This keeps the infusion time independent of the milk and lets you judge the tea’s strength before changing its temperature and flavour.
Yorkshire Tea is commonly presented as a robust black blend that works with milk, but neither the cited product specification nor the trade guidance prescribes a fixed milk volume. Add a small amount, stir, and adjust. Sugar is equally optional.
If you prefer black tea, simply remove the bag at the end of the chosen infusion and drink it without milk. The four-minute starting point is usually the easier place to begin when no milk will soften the cup.
Hard water: why the same tea can taste different
Tap-water hardness varies by location. Dissolved minerals can change the appearance and mouthfeel of tea; Yorkshire Tea’s product information describes hard water as capable of making a cup taste “darker and thicker.” The Yorkshire Tea brew-news archive also discusses the historical problem of scum in hard-water areas.
A simple decision rule
- Your water tastes neutral and the cup is clear: use standard Yorkshire Tea with the four-to-five-minute method.
- You notice a mineral taste, excessive thickness or surface scum: compare your usual tap water with filtered water, or try Yorkshire Tea Hard Water tea bags, a blend formulated for mineral-rich water.
- Your kettle repeatedly develops heavy scale: a water filter is a practical category-level option. The cited guidance does not endorse a particular filter brand.
Change one variable at a time. Brew the same tea bag for the same duration with tap water and filtered water, then compare colour, aroma, thickness and aftertaste. This tells you whether the water, rather than the infusion time, is driving the difference.
Water and kettle practices for consistent results
Use the amount you will drink
Fill the kettle to the amount needed for the mugs you are making, allowing for normal pouring loss. A kettle filled far beyond the requirement takes longer to boil and may encourage you to reboil the remainder later. UK Tea & Infusions Association advice is to boil the required amount only.

Pour immediately
Place the bag in the mug before the kettle finishes. Pour as soon as the water boils so the water reaching the bag is still close to the recommended black-tea range. If the kettle has an adjustable temperature setting, choose a setting appropriate for black tea rather than a cooler setting intended for delicate teas.
Keep the mug setup repeatable
Use the same mug when you are tuning your routine. Differences in capacity can make an identical bag and timer appear inconsistent. Once you know the time you like, note whether that result is with or without milk, because milk changes the final balance.
Comparing the main preparation choices
| Choice | What changes | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Yorkshire Tea, 4 minutes | Moderate extraction within the recommended range | Balanced black tea or a lighter milk tea | May seem light in a very large mug |
| Standard Yorkshire Tea, 5 minutes | Additional body from the same bag | More robust taste or a milk-based mug | Can taste too intense if your water or preference already produces a strong cup |
| Filtered water | Changes the mineral content of the brewing water | Hard-water taste, thickness or scum | Requires a filter and may not improve neutral-tasting water |
| Yorkshire Tea Hard Water blend | Uses a blend positioned to balance hard-water effects | Mineral-rich tap water that makes standard tea taste darker or thicker | It is a different blend, so flavour will not be identical to standard Yorkshire Tea |
| Milk added after bag removal | Leaves the infusion time under your control | The preferred mug sequence from UK Tea & Infusions Association | Requires you to judge strength before adding milk |
Troubleshooting by symptom
The tea tastes weak
- Check that you used one bag for the actual mug volume, not a large travel cup.
- Confirm the water was freshly boiled and poured directly over the bag.
- Allow the full four minutes before judging it; move toward five minutes if you want more body.
- If the mug is exceptionally large, use less water or make the practical adjustment of a second bag.
The tea tastes bitter or rough
- Stop at four minutes rather than extending the brew beyond the documented range.
- Check whether the water was left standing in the kettle and reheated repeatedly.
- Try the same timing with filtered water if your tap water is strongly mineralised.
The tea is dark, thick or has scum
- Compare a cup made with filtered water against one made with your usual tap water.
- Consider Yorkshire Tea Hard Water tea bags if the difference is consistently associated with your tap water.
- Clean kettle scale according to the kettle manufacturer’s instructions; heavy scale is a sign that your water is mineral-rich, although cleaning alone does not change the water chemistry.
The cup changes from one day to the next
- Use the same mug and water volume.
- Boil only the amount required and pour promptly.
- Keep the infusion timer consistent, then adjust only one variable at a time.
Dialling in your personal cup
Once the basic routine is reliable, make small, deliberate changes rather than changing several things at once. Keep the mug, water volume and tea bag count fixed. Make one cup at four minutes and another at five minutes, using the same water. Compare the aroma while hot, the first sip, the texture after milk and the aftertaste as the cup cools. This simple side-by-side test shows whether you actually prefer extra steeping or are responding to a water difference.
For a milk tea, judge the tea both before and after adding milk. A cup that seems intense when black may become balanced once milk is stirred in; a cup that seems merely adequate when black can become too weak after dilution. Because the guidance gives a range rather than a single compulsory time, recording your preferred point is more useful than treating four or five minutes as a rigid rule.
When a travel mug or oversized household mug is involved, estimate its capacity against your usual mug. The documented ratio is one bag per mug, but “mug” is not assigned a universal volume in the product guidance. If the larger vessel holds substantially more water, either accept a lighter drink, reduce the fill level, or make the practical choice of a second bag. Change only one of those variables at a time.

Likewise, do not use milk to disguise a preparation problem. If a drink is thin, first check the amount of water, the freshness and temperature of the pour, and the four-minute minimum. If it is rough, shorten the brew and test the water. Milk and sugar can tailor the finished cup, but they cannot correct every extraction or mineral issue.
A controlled hard-water comparison
To test whether hardness is responsible for a change in flavour, make two mugs as nearly identical as possible. Use one Yorkshire Tea bag in each, the same mug size and the same four- or five-minute timer. Prepare one with your normal tap water and one with filtered water. Look for differences in brightness, thickness, surface scum and lingering mineral notes.

If filtered water produces a cleaner result repeatedly, continue using it if the convenience and filter maintenance suit you. If the difference is small, standard Yorkshire Tea and your ordinary water may already be a good match. For persistently mineral-rich water, Yorkshire Tea Hard Water tea bags are another option: the product listing recommends one bag, freshly boiled water and a four-to-five-minute infusion, while describing the blend as made to balance hard-water effects.
A filter is a category-level solution, not a guarantee of a particular flavour. Different filters remove different amounts of minerals, and the cited guidance does not specify a brand or performance rating. Replace cartridges and maintain the device according to its own instructions; the tea method itself remains the same.
Storage and best-before dates
Store tea in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strongly flavoured or perfumed foods. Tea readily picks up surrounding odours, so an open packet beside coffee, spices or cleaning products can lose its familiar aroma even when the bags remain dry.
The Taylors of Harrogate product specification lists an 18-month shelf life for the specified product data. That figure is not a guarantee that every packet on sale has the same remaining age; follow the best-before marking printed on your own pack.
A repeatable routine
For everyday use, set up the mug and bag before boiling, use freshly drawn water, pour immediately, and start a four-minute timer. Taste the tea before deciding whether to let it run to five minutes. Remove the bag, then add milk if desired. If the result remains darker, thicker or scummier than expected, investigate the water before changing the tea ratio.
Frequently Asked Questions

Should milk go in before or after the tea bag?
Add milk last. Brew with freshly boiled water, remove the bag, then add milk. UK Tea & Infusions Association guidance states, “Milk in last is best.”
What temperature should the water be?
UK Tea & Infusions Association guidance gives 90–98°C for black tea. In a standard kettle, pour immediately after boiling instead of allowing the water to cool.
How can I make Yorkshire Tea stronger without making it bitter?
First verify the mug volume and use freshly boiled water. Move from four toward five minutes within the stated range. If the mug is exceptionally large, use less water or a second bag rather than stewing one bag for much longer.
Why does my Yorkshire Tea taste different with hard water?
Dissolved minerals can make tea darker and thicker and may create surface scum. Compare filtered and tap water, or try Yorkshire Tea Hard Water tea bags formulated for mineral-rich water.
Do I need to squeeze the tea bag?
The cited preparation guidance says to remove the bag after brewing and does not make squeezing a requirement. Remove it at your chosen four- or five-minute point, then finish the drink.
How should I store Yorkshire Tea, and how long does it last?
Keep it cool and dry, away from sunlight and strong aromas. A Taylors of Harrogate specification lists an 18-month shelf life for the specified product data, but your packet’s printed best-before date takes precedence.
The Bottom Line
Use one bag per mug, freshly drawn water poured immediately after boiling, and a four-to-five-minute infusion. Stop at four minutes for balance or go to five for extra body, remove the bag, then add milk. If hard water makes the cup dark, thick or scummy, compare filtered water or choose Yorkshire Tea Hard Water.
