Yes—a Raspberry Pi 5 can boot from an NVMe drive larger than 2TB. The key issue is the disk’s partition table: Hackster’s coverage of Coreyfro’s method says to use GPT rather than MBR, which it identifies as the source of a 2TB limit in the Raspberry Pi imaging approach described there. Raspberry Pi’s own documentation covers connecting, imaging, and booting NVMe drives, but the complete >2TB command sequence has not been independently verified here.

Why an NVMe drive can appear limited to 2TB

The partition table determines how a disk’s capacity is laid out. Hackster reports that Coreyfro’s method uses GPT (GUID Partition Table) instead of MBR (Master Boot Record), which the article says can limit an imaged drive larger than 2TB to 2TB. Read Hackster’s coverage of Coreyfro’s guide for the attributed explanation.

The reported example used a 4TB Team Group NVMe SSD with a Pineberry Pi Bottom Pi HAT. That is one reported setup, not a compatibility guarantee for every drive, adapter, image, or Raspberry Pi OS release. A Reddit user separately described a 4TB GPT layout with boot, root, and remaining-capacity partitions; that individual report does not establish a universal procedure. See the community setup report.

What you need before setting up NVMe boot

  • A Raspberry Pi 5 and an NVMe SSD.
  • An M.2 HAT+ or M.2 HAT+ Compact, which Raspberry Pi documents for connecting an NVMe drive, or a compatible third-party PCIe-to-M.2 adapter. The reported Pineberry Pi setup is an example, not an official Raspberry Pi recommendation.
  • A partitioning and imaging method that creates a GPT layout and makes the full drive capacity available. Confirm that the instructions you follow explicitly account for capacity beyond 2TB.

Raspberry Pi’s M.2 HAT+ documentation is the official baseline for connecting, imaging, detecting, and booting an NVMe drive. It does not, in the material cited here, verify Coreyfro’s complete >2TB procedure.

Geekworm X1001 PCIe to M.2 HAT Key-M NVMe SSD PIP Board for Raspberry Pi 5
  • Compatibility: Pi 5 PCIe M.2 HAT only compatible with Raspberry Pi 5 2GB/4GB/8GB/16GB SBC (NOT include Raspberry Pi 5), NVMe base for Raspberry Pi 5, Model: X1001, the matching case is P579
  • M2 Key-M NVMe SSD Supported: Support M.2 KEY-M NVMe SSD 2230/2242/2260/2280 length installation; Comes with SSD copper pillar for 2230/2242/2260 SSD installation
  • User Manual and FAQ: Google Geekworm WiKi and search X1001 and its FAQ; Refer to the FAQ to do troubleshoot step by step if can't boot/recognize from NVMe SSD
  • Designed as a basic PCIe expansion board for the Raspberry Pi 5, the X1001 features limited standalone hardware functionality and requires proper OS configuration, stable FFC cable connection, and compatibility between firmware and SSDs for reliable operation.
  • Power Supply Requirements: The X1001 is powered directly through the PCIe FFC ribbon cable. For stable operation, use the Raspberry Pi 5 PD 27W USB-C Power Supply (5.1V/5A). Note: Standard phone chargers may not provide sufficient power for NVMe SSDs, which can result in SSD instability, data corruption or drive failure.

Set up and boot from NVMe using Raspberry Pi’s documented baseline

  1. Power off and disconnect the Pi. Raspberry Pi advises disconnecting power before connecting or disconnecting an M.2 device.
  2. Connect the NVMe drive. Fit the drive to an M.2 HAT+ or HAT+ Compact according to its instructions.
  3. Flash Raspberry Pi OS to the NVMe drive. Raspberry Pi documents using Raspberry Pi Imager, then rebooting. For a drive larger than 2TB, this baseline alone does not establish that the resulting partition layout uses the full capacity; ensure the method you use addresses GPT and the full drive.
  4. Choose the boot path. With no SD card inserted, Pi 5 boots automatically from NVMe. If an SD card remains inserted, it is tried first; to prioritize NVMe, open raspi-config → Advanced Options → Boot Order → NVMe/USB boot.

These are Raspberry Pi’s documented general NVMe steps, not a verified reproduction of the separate GPT-specific >2TB instructions. For the official details, see Raspberry Pi’s M.2 HAT+ guide.

Check whether the Pi detects the drive

After booting into Raspberry Pi OS, run:

ls -l /dev/nvme*

Raspberry Pi says detected NVMe devices appear as /dev/nvme0 and /dev/nvme0n1. Detection does not by itself prove the whole drive is partitioned or usable. An unformatted drive will not appear as an accessible desktop volume until it has been partitioned and formatted.

Keep PCIe speed and compatibility expectations realistic

Pi 5 uses PCIe Gen 2.0 at 5 GT/s by default. Raspberry Pi describes Gen 3.0 as uncertified and warns that connections may be unstable; changing speed is not a fix for a partition-table capacity limit. See Raspberry Pi’s computer and PCIe documentation.

Likewise, a community report showing one 4TB drive and adapter working should not be treated as proof that all NVMe hardware combinations will work. Check the drive and adapter’s physical and electrical compatibility, and follow the relevant hardware documentation.

What is and is not established about Coreyfro’s method

Hackster attributes the GPT approach and the reported 4TB build to Coreyfro, whom it describes as a pseudonymous tinkerer. The original instructions were not independently retrieved for this article, so their full sequence of commands and every adjustment needed for a current software release are not confirmed. Do not assume that a GPT disk layout alone guarantees a bootable setup: the boot and root partitions, imaging process, and boot configuration must also be handled correctly.

For that reason, use Raspberry Pi’s documentation for the supported connection and boot basics, and consult Hackster’s report as the secondary source for the GPT-specific method and its example hardware—not as official Raspberry Pi instructions.
