You can search for an Indian Railways train in the Ixigo app, choose a class and berth preference, enter passenger details, then finish the reservation through the IRCTC booking flow. An IRCTC username and password are required because Ixigo facilitates the search and booking while Indian Railways issues the ticket. Before paying, verify the stations, date, train, class, passenger data, availability, fare and any displayed service charges.
This guide follows the current booking sequence, explains what each screen means, and covers payment failures, electronic reservation slips (ERS), cancellations and refunds. Labels and layouts can differ by app release, device and account, so use the equivalent action shown on your screen if wording changes.
What you need before opening Ixigo
Have the following ready so the booking does not stop midway:
- An Ixigo account or the ability to access its Trains section.
- A valid IRCTC account username and password. Ixigo’s User Agreement says train-ticket users are redirected to the IRCTC website or application and that IRCTC credentials are required.
- The exact boarding and destination stations. Several cities have more than one station, and choosing the wrong one can produce a train that does not serve your intended location.
- Your journey date and a flexible alternative date if your first choice has no availability.
- Passenger details exactly as they should appear on the reservation: name, age, sex and berth preference.
- A payment method that can complete online authentication, such as UPI, card or net banking. The options visible at checkout depend on the payment flow and may change.
- A way to save the confirmation and electronic reservation slip after payment, such as a secure email account, downloaded file or screenshot for reference.
Keep the phone number and email address on your IRCTC account accessible. They may be used for account verification and booking messages, and correcting an account detail after a failed attempt can be harder than checking it first.

Book a train ticket in Ixigo: the complete sequence
1. Open Trains and enter your route
- Open the Ixigo app.
- Choose Trains from the home screen or travel-product menu.
- In From, search for and select the station where you will board.
- In To, search for and select your destination station.
- Choose the journey date from the calendar.
- Submit the search using the button currently shown, such as Search Trains.
Check the station codes or full station names before submitting. The route is built from the selected stations, not just the city name typed into the search box. If the app offers nearby-station suggestions, open each result and choose the one that matches your intended boarding point.
2. Read the train results before selecting one
The results list is where you compare departure and arrival times, route information, classes, availability and fares. IRCTC’s “Book E-Ticket” guidance identifies these as the key details exposed before booking. Do not select the first result solely because it appears at the top.

Availability is live and can change while you are checking results. A class shown as available is not a guarantee that it will still be available when payment is completed, and Ixigo cannot promise a particular berth. Indian Railways controls allotment.

3. Select the train and class
- Tap the train that fits your route and time.
- Review the classes offered for that train, such as Sleeper or an AC class.
- Select the class you want to book.
- Read the availability status and fare for that class.
- Continue with the button shown, for example Book or Continue.
Compare the total shown for each class rather than comparing only the base fare. The final amount can include a service or convenience charge, and the amount can vary with booking parameters. If the app displays a quota selector, make sure the chosen quota matches your eligibility; cancellation charges can depend on the ticket type and quota.
4. Enter passenger details and berth preference
The reservation page asks for the information used to create the passenger record. IRCTC describes fields for passenger name, age, sex and berth preference. Complete every field carefully:

- Enter each passenger’s name with the spelling you want on the ticket.
- Enter age and select sex as requested by the form.
- Choose a berth preference if the form provides one, such as lower, middle, upper, side-lower or side-upper.
- Add all passengers travelling on the booking, subject to the limits and rules displayed in the app.
- Review the list for transposed names, incorrect ages or a preference applied to the wrong passenger.
A berth preference is a request, not a reservation promise. The railway system makes the final allotment based on availability and its allocation rules. If a preferred berth is unavailable, the system may assign another berth or show a different result; read the final passenger and berth information before paying.
At this point also verify the train name, origin, destination and journey date. Fixing a mistake before payment is simpler than trying to cancel a ticket later, because cancellation charges and deadlines apply.
5. Sign in to IRCTC when Ixigo redirects you
When you continue, Ixigo may redirect you to the IRCTC website or application. This is expected: Ixigo’s User Agreement states that it acts as a facilitator for searching and booking desired train tickets on the IRCTC platform and that users are redirected to IRCTC to book.
- Enter your IRCTC username and password on the official IRCTC sign-in screen presented by the flow.
- Complete any verification or one-time step the current screen requests.
- Confirm that the reservation details carried into the IRCTC flow still match your selected train, class and passengers.
Do not share your IRCTC password in chat, by phone or with anyone claiming to need it for support. If the credentials fail, use the account-recovery option provided by IRCTC rather than repeatedly submitting guesses. Ixigo support cannot change the railway account’s authentication rules.
6. Choose a payment method and complete checkout
Proceed to the payment page only after checking the order summary. IRCTC’s payment documentation describes card, UPI and net-banking routes through its payment infrastructure; the exact buttons and providers shown in an Ixigo checkout can differ.

- Confirm the displayed train, class, passengers, journey date and total amount.
- Select the payment method you can authenticate immediately: UPI, debit or credit card, or net banking when offered.
- Complete the bank, card or UPI authorization without closing the app or pressing Back.
- Wait for the booking result to return to the app or IRCTC confirmation screen.
Do not assume that a debit notification alone means a ticket was issued. The decisive result is a booking confirmation with a reservation number or equivalent ticket details. If money appears to be held but no confirmation is shown, follow the failure procedure below instead of starting repeated payments.

A successful booking displays confirmation details. IRCTC says you can print or retrieve the electronic reservation slip (ERS) from booked tickets. Save the information before leaving the screen:
- PNR or booking reference shown by the service.
- Train number and name, journey date, origin and destination.
- Passenger names and allotted berths or status.
- Payment amount and booking timestamp.
- The ERS file or a reliable way to retrieve it from the booked-tickets area.
Use the current Booked Tickets, My Trips or similarly named section to retrieve the ERS later. The exact label depends on the app and account state. Keep the confirmation accessible offline if you expect poor connectivity during travel, while following the identification requirements shown by Indian Railways for the journey.
How to decide between trains and classes
Ixigo’s search interface is useful for narrowing the list, but the decision should be based on the information shown for the specific date. Use this sequence:
- Filter mentally by a departure window you can reach comfortably.
- Remove trains whose arrival time does not work, even if their fare is lower.
- Compare the available class and its total displayed fare.
- Check whether the service has a suitable route and stopping pattern.
- Choose the train only after confirming the availability status at the class level.
For a long journey, compare the practical trade-off between a lower fare and an AC class, but rely on the live class description and fare presented in the app. Do not infer that every train offers every class or that an unavailable class will open later.

What the fare includes—and what it may not
The amount shown before payment is the amount to assess for that booking attempt. Look for a breakdown or an expandable price summary. Ixigo states that fees vary by booking parameters, and its payment-gateway or service fee charged at booking is non-refundable. Therefore, record the total and any line items before authorizing payment.
- Base railway fare: the fare associated with the selected train, class and journey.
- Service or convenience charge: an additional amount that may be displayed by the booking channel.
- Other displayed components: any taxes or payment-related line items the checkout identifies.
Because prices and fees can change with the route, class, quota, passenger count and date, a figure from one search should not be treated as a universal Ixigo fee. Use the final checkout summary for your own transaction.
Payment failures, pending results and retry options
When payment fails before any debit
Return to the booking screen, verify that the selected train is still available, and start a fresh attempt only after the failed transaction is clearly closed. Repeated taps can create multiple authorization attempts or make it unclear which attempt succeeded.
When money is held but booking is not confirmed
IRCTC iPay documents an AutoPay or AutoDebit behavior in which a hold is placed on the payment instrument and released if the booking fails; when booking succeeds, the amount is debited. The exact behavior can depend on the payment route used in the Ixigo flow. Check the bank or UPI status and the booked-tickets area before trying again.

Some IRCTC payment flows document a Resume/Retry Booking option for certain same-day payment-confirmation failures. That feature may not appear identically in every Ixigo checkout. If the option is shown, use it from the same booking context. If it is not shown, wait for the transaction status to resolve, check booked tickets and retain the payment reference before contacting the relevant support channel.

When the app closes or the network drops
- Reopen Ixigo and check booked tickets first.
- Check the IRCTC booking history if the flow opened an IRCTC screen.
- Do not make another payment until you know whether the first attempt created a ticket.
- Keep screenshots or references for any debit, hold or error message.
A bank debit without a reservation confirmation is a payment-status problem, not proof of a confirmed journey. Resolve the status using the booking history and the payment reference.

Yes, but the timing and rules are strict. Ixigo’s User Agreement says a ticket booked through Ixigo can be cancelled only before chart preparation. IRCTC’s “E-Ticket Cancel” guidance likewise states that an e-ticket can be cancelled online until chart preparation; after chart preparation, normal cancellation is unavailable and an online TDR may be required under railway rules.
How to submit a cancellation before chart preparation
- Open Ixigo and go to the booked-ticket or trip section.
- Select the train booking you want to cancel.
- Choose the cancellation action currently displayed.
- Review which passengers are being cancelled and the estimated refund before confirming.
- Submit the cancellation and save the cancellation reference.
Cancellation charges depend on the ticket type, quota and how close the cancellation is to the journey or chart-preparation point. Read the amount shown for your ticket rather than applying a generic percentage. The payment-gateway or service fee charged by Ixigo at booking is non-refundable, so the returned amount can be lower than the original total even when the railway fare is otherwise refundable.
What to do after chart preparation
Once the chart has been prepared, the ordinary online cancellation path is no longer available. Where railway rules permit a claim, IRCTC may require an online Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR). A TDR is a request for consideration under the applicable railway rule; it is not an automatic refund. Follow the current instructions shown by IRCTC for the specific ticket status and retain the acknowledgement.
Ixigo and the official IRCTC app: what is different?
Ixigo and IRCTC are not interchangeable in responsibility. Ixigo provides a search and booking interface, while Indian Railways and IRCTC govern issuance, allotment and railway cancellation rules.

Choose the interface that helps you search and manage the trip, but treat the IRCTC account, railway status and final ticket record as authoritative for issuance and cancellation.
Final pre-payment checklist
- From and To stations are the exact stations you intend to use.
- Journey date and train departure time are correct.
- Train name and number match the service you selected.
- Class and availability status are acceptable.
- Passenger names, ages and sex entries are accurate.
- Berth preferences are set for the correct passengers, with no expectation that a preference guarantees allotment.
- IRCTC username and account contact details are correct.
- Total fare includes every service or convenience charge displayed by checkout.
- Payment method is ready for authentication.
- You know where to retrieve the booked ticket and ERS after confirmation.
Important limits to keep in mind
Screen names, button positions and payment options can change with an Ixigo or IRCTC release, device and account state. Follow the current equivalent label rather than an old screenshot. Availability and berth allotment are controlled by Indian Railways, so neither a search result nor a berth preference is a guarantee until the booking confirmation shows the ticket status. Cancellation eligibility ends at chart preparation for the normal online process, and any refund is reduced by the charges applicable to the ticket plus Ixigo’s non-refundable payment-gateway or service fee.
