If your airline has cancelled your flight, first ask it to reroute you and confirm what it will cover before buying a replacement ticket yourself. You may have a right to a refund or rerouting, depending on the route and applicable rules, but a ticket you buy independently is not automatically reimbursed. If the airline cannot offer a workable option and you cannot wait, keep a clear record of its response, the flights available, and what you pay.

What to do first when your airline is grounded

“Grounded” can mean different things: your particular flight may be cancelled, the airline may have suspended some or all operations, or it may have announced a schedule change without formally cancelling your flight. Check your booking and the airline’s latest notice to establish which has happened. A grounding or suspension does not, by itself, tell you whether the airline is insolvent or what will happen to your ticket.

  1. Save your records. Keep your ticket and booking reference, proof of payment, cancellation or suspension notices, and screenshots of replacement flights and fares while they are available. Note when you contact the airline, which channel you use, and what it offers or refuses.
  2. Contact the airline operating your flight. Try its app, phone line, airport desk, and written support channel if available. Give your destination, acceptable arrival window, passenger needs, and whether you could use a nearby airport. Ask for specific replacement flights with confirmed seats, not just a general promise to rebook. The European Commission advises passengers to make themselves known to the airline during a disruption; see its air passenger-rights guidance.
  3. Ask what it can actually ticket. Ask the airline to check its own flights, partners, and other carriers it can book, and request the flight numbers, departure and arrival times, and confirmation of your seat in writing. If an agency issued your ticket, contact it as well, but do not let that prevent you from seeking help from the operating airline.
  4. Compare the offered itinerary with your needs. Consider total arrival time, connections and missed-connection risk, whether the seat is confirmed or standby, baggage and accessibility requirements, and the time and cost of reaching a different airport. A cheaper ticket may be a poor choice if it leaves you stranded at an airport you cannot readily reach.

Will the airline put you on another airline?

It may, but do not assume that every airline must offer a competitor’s flight in every situation. The answer depends on the rules that apply to your journey and the carrier’s available options and commitments.

If your journey is covered by EU Regulation 261/2004

For a covered cancellation, Article 8 provides a choice between reimbursement and rerouting: rerouting at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions, or rerouting later at your convenience subject to seat availability. The European Commission’s 2024 interpretative guidelines say that, when seeking to meet its rerouting obligations, an operating carrier should deploy available resources to find a reasonable, satisfactory, and timely option, including considering direct or indirect flights operated by other carriers. This is a basis for asking the airline to check competitors; it is not a guarantee that any particular flight must be offered. Read the Commission’s 2024 interpretative guidelines and the text of Article 8.

If your flight is covered by U.S. Department of Transportation refund rules

U.S. Department of Transportation rules primarily address your right to a refund when a flight is cancelled and you decline rebooking or other compensation offered instead of a refund. They do not generally require an airline to rebook you on another carrier. Some airlines publish commitments to rebook passengers on partner or agreement airlines for controllable disruptions. Check the airline’s current entry in the DOT Airline Customer Service Dashboard rather than treating another carrier’s ticket as a universal entitlement. The DOT explains its cancellation-refund rules on its refunds page.

Should you wait for a rebooking or take a refund?

Compare the airline’s actual offer with your deadline and the cost and practicality of arranging another trip. Ask for the earliest workable reroute and, if it is not suitable, ask what other options it can ticket. Request the choices and any stated conditions in writing before deciding.

  • Choose rerouting when the offered itinerary gets you where you need to go and its timing, connections, airport transfers, and passenger accommodations are acceptable.
  • Consider a refund when you no longer want to travel or the available rerouting does not meet your needs. Under EU Regulation 261/2004, reimbursement and rerouting are separate Article 8 choices. Under the DOT refund rules, a U.S.-covered passenger can receive a refund when they decline rebooking or compensation offered instead of a refund; accepting and travelling on a rebooked alternative generally means the passenger does not receive a refund under that rule. Check the applicable rules and the airline’s offer before accepting.
  • Consider buying a replacement yourself only after weighing the urgency against the possibility that you will have to pay for it. Before purchase, ask the airline in writing to book the specific itinerary or confirm whether it will reimburse that fare.

Keep refund, rerouting, care, and compensation distinct. Under EU rules, compensation may depend on circumstances and notice; extraordinary circumstances can remove compensation entitlement while assistance and care rights may still apply. The European Commission’s air-passenger-rights FAQs explain these distinctions.

Can you book your own replacement flight and get reimbursed?

Do not count on it. The rules and sources cited here do not establish a universal right to reimbursement for every independently purchased replacement ticket. If time allows, ask the airline to authorize the specific flight or book it for you before paying. A written answer is more useful than an assumption that the airline will later cover the cost.

If you must book before the airline responds, preserve evidence that helps show why you acted and what options existed at the time:

What changes if the airline has stopped operating or is insolvent?

A temporary grounding, widespread cancellations, and formal insolvency are different events. Do not assume that a suspension means the airline is bankrupt or that every ticket has automatically become worthless. The European Commission identifies insolvency as a passenger-protection issue, but the relevant protections depend on the applicable rules and your circumstances; see its air passenger-rights page.

A Council of the European Union position document published in 2026 discusses proposed relief for passengers stranded by airline insolvency. A position document alone does not establish that a proposal is effective law. For an insolvency claim, check the rules in force for your route and travel date rather than relying on a proposal as an existing entitlement. The document is available here.

A quick checklist before you pay for another ticket

  • Is your original flight formally cancelled, or has the airline only announced a change or suspension?
  • Have you asked the operating airline for its earliest workable reroute, including options on other carriers?
  • Do you know whether accepting an offered alternative affects your refund choice under the rules that apply to your flight?
  • Have you checked the airline’s written commitments and, for U.S.-covered travel, its DOT dashboard entry?
  • Does the replacement have a confirmed seat, workable connections, suitable baggage and accessibility arrangements, and a realistic airport transfer?
  • Have you asked the airline in writing to authorize or book the specific self-purchased itinerary?
  • Have you saved the offers, fare availability, contact attempts, confirmations, and receipts?
