Block first, report the exact item second, and then restrict the space where it appeared. Mute stops a player’s voice or posts from reaching you, blocking prevents direct contact and invitations, filters reduce matching words or media, and a report asks the platform to enforce its rules. Use the controls together: filters can miss coded language, images and voice, while a report without a block does not immediately stop contact.
This guide shows how to handle racist text, voice chat, clips, profiles, broadcasts, comments and direct messages on PlayStation, Xbox, Discord and X. Menu names and reporting options can vary by device, country and account, so use the closest current label when a screen differs.
Choose the right control for the problem
Each tool has a different job. Applying the wrong one can leave you exposed or fail to give moderators the evidence they need.

For the strongest response, mute or block while the content is in front of you, report the exact item, and leave or tighten privacy settings if the wider space remains hostile.

What to do in the first five minutes
- Stop contact. Mute the player or chat so you no longer hear or read the abuse. Block the account to stop direct interaction, party invitations or further messages where the service allows it.
- Capture only safe evidence. Note the username or gamertag, the item’s URL if there is one, and the date and time. Take a screenshot or short clip only if doing so does not expose you to more abuse. Do not copy slurs into a public reply.
- Report the individual item. Open the message, image, video, clip, profile, broadcast, comment or voice-report interface and choose hate speech, harassment or the closest race-based abuse category. Reporting only an account can miss the offending item.
- Exit the source of repeated abuse. Leave a Discord server, gaming group or social thread that keeps sharing racist material. If you remain, mute it and limit who can mention, message or invite you.
- Escalate credible danger. Threats of imminent violence, publication of your personal information, or targeting of a child require the platform’s urgent safety route and contact with local law enforcement or a trusted safeguarding service.
Do not retaliate, quote the slur to attract attention, or arrange a confrontation. Disengagement preserves your safety and leaves moderators a cleaner record.

What PlayStation treats as hate speech
PlayStation defines hate speech as abuse involving prejudice, hostility or violence toward a person or group because of protected characteristics, including race, ethnicity, national origin, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, age, religion and disability. Its definition covers threatening text or verbal content as well as discriminatory text, images and video. A racist joke, slur, threat, edited image or broadcast can therefore be reportable even when it is not a direct message to you.
Report a specific item on PS5
- Open Game Base or the offending player’s profile.
- Select the exact message or other content you want reviewed.
- Choose Report, select the reason that most closely matches hate speech or harassment, and follow the prompts.
- Use the option to block the user at the end of the report flow.
PlayStation says reports are reviewed by human moderators. The report flow supports messages, profiles, screenshots, videos, broadcasts, comments and other listed content. When racist material occurs inside a game rather than in the PlayStation interface, use that game’s own report tool as well.
Include voice evidence when available
On PS5, a voice-chat report can include a 40-second clip from the last five minutes of voice chat. Submit the relevant segment rather than recording a long conversation. If the abuse happened earlier than the available window, write down the time and identify the players involved; do not keep provoking them to recreate it.
After reporting
Blocking protects your account immediately, but it may not remove a public clip or comment from everyone else’s view. If the same account appears through another profile or in a group, repeat the process for each offending item and ask the group’s moderators to act.

Xbox: mute, block and report the offending content
Use all three actions
Xbox Community Standards explicitly encourage players who experience or witness inappropriate content or behavior to mute, block and report the player. Mute the voice or messages first, block the account to limit contact, then report the exact gamertag, message or content item and select the closest hate or harassment category.
Why the item matters more than the profile alone
A gamertag report may trigger only a review of the gamertag itself. If the racist material was in a message, image, clip or other post, open that item and report it separately. Include the surrounding context in the form when it explains why the content is discriminatory, but do not repeat the slur in a public conversation.

Microsoft Xbox reported that from January through June 2024, AI-enabled tools combined with human expertise prevented 19 million pieces of Xbox Community Standards-violating content from reaching players across text, image and video. That figure describes content prevented during that six-month period; it is not a promise that every report will be removed or that every abusive voice interaction will be detected.
When an in-game report is necessary
Some games handle match chat, scoreboard messages or player clips inside the game rather than through the Xbox shell. Use the game’s report control for the item, then use Xbox’s block and mute controls so the player cannot continue contacting you through the console account.
Discord: handle servers, direct messages and repeat offenders
Understand the policy boundary
In its policy explainer dated August 29, 2025, Discord states that hateful conduct and hate speech are not allowed. It describes hate speech as expression that degrades, vilifies or dehumanizes people, incites hostility toward groups, or promotes harm based on protected characteristics. Racist text, images, memes, usernames, voice content and coordinated harassment can fall within that rule.

Report the message or account
- Open the message or account that contains the abuse.
- Use Discord’s in-app reporting flow and select the reason closest to hateful conduct or harassment.
- Preserve the message link, username and time privately if the form requests context.
- Notify the server’s moderators when that is safe and useful; they can remove the post, ban the member or change channel permissions.
- Mute or leave the server if racist content is recurring or moderators do not keep the space safe.
Reporting a server member does not automatically remove you from the server. Leaving is the reliable way to stop seeing the channel, while muting can reduce notifications if you need to remain for a legitimate activity.

Voice and media require extra care
Word filters cannot reliably identify racist voice chat, images or coded references. If the abuse is spoken, describe what happened and identify the channel, speaker and approximate time in the report. Save a clip only when doing so is lawful and safe; never redistribute it to make the slur go viral.
X: report posts and direct messages, then close the contact route
What the policy covers
X prohibits hateful conduct targeting individuals or groups because of protected characteristics. The policy applies to posts and direct messages. A racist reply, quote-post, image, video or private message should be reported from the item where it appears.
Reporting sequence
- Open the post or direct message menu and choose Report.
- Select the hate or harassment reason that best describes the conduct and submit the details.
- Block the account to stop direct contact and mute it if you want to remove its posts without a visible block.
- Turn on available reply, mention and sensitive-content controls to reduce future exposure.
If several posts form one campaign, report each representative post or message and explain the pattern in the report. A single account report may not identify every violating item.
Build a filter and privacy setup that reduces exposure
Use hidden-word and sensitive-content controls as a second layer
Add common slurs, relevant abbreviations and recurring phrases to a service’s hidden-word or muted-word list when that option exists. Adjust sensitive-content settings to reduce graphic or hateful media in recommendations. These settings lower exposure; they do not establish that content is acceptable and they do not replace reporting.

Why filters miss racist gaming content
- People alter spellings with numbers, punctuation, spacing or deliberate misspellings.
- Coded language can convey the same meaning without containing a blocked word.
- Images, memes, usernames and video overlays may contain text that a word filter never parses.
- Voice chat and audio clips are not covered by many text-only filters.
- New slurs and rapidly changing references can appear before your list is updated.
When a filter fails, block the account and report the actual media. Do not keep adding increasingly broad terms if that would hide ordinary, non-abusive conversation you still need to see.
Restrict who can reach you
Where the service offers these settings, limit direct messages, friend requests, party invitations, mentions, replies and comments to friends or approved users. Disable automatic invitations from people you do not know. For a child’s account, review these settings with the child and use the platform’s family or safety controls where available; do not rely on a filter alone.
Separate feed control from group control
Muting an account changes your personal view. Server, group and channel moderation changes the space for everyone. Ask a trusted moderator to remove racist posts and restrict repeat offenders. If the group normalizes the material, leaving is more effective than continually curating your own feed.

Record the minimum useful details
- Account name, gamertag or server member name.
- Direct link to the post or message when the service provides one.
- Date and time, including your time zone when relevant.
- What surface contained the abuse: text, voice, image, video, profile, broadcast, comment or direct message.
- A screenshot or short clip that shows enough context for a reviewer, with unrelated private information cropped when possible.
Store it privately
Keep evidence in a secure folder or note and upload it only through the platform’s reporting form or an urgent safety channel. Do not publish a screenshot with the offender’s slur visible unless a qualified authority specifically asks for it. Public reposting can expose other people to the material and may alert the offender that you are collecting evidence.
When evidence collection is unsafe
If the account is threatening you, publishing personal information or targeting a child, stop interacting. Use the urgent safety route and contact local law enforcement or a trusted safeguarding service. Your safety takes priority over obtaining a perfect screenshot.

What to expect from moderation—and how to escalate
Reports are not guaranteed outcomes
Platform policies describe prohibited conduct and reporting workflows, not guaranteed response times or removal for every case. Keep the report focused on the specific item and explain the protected characteristic being targeted, the audience reached and whether the conduct is repeated.
Enforcement varies by platform and sample
OBERAXE’s 2024 annual monitoring report found that, among the hate-speech content in its monitored sample, only a minority was removed within one week. The report recorded removal rates of 7% for Instagram, 5% for Facebook, 5% for TikTok, 3% for X and 1% for YouTube in that measure. These are results from that report’s sample and methodology, not universal platform performance scores or a prediction for your report.
If the first report does not resolve the problem
- Check that you reported the individual message, post, clip or profile rather than only the account name.
- Submit a new report for a separate violating item, preserving the original case information if the platform shows it.
- Ask a server, group or game moderator to remove the content and restrict the member.
- Use the platform’s urgent safety process for threats, doxxing or child-safety concerns.
- Keep the account blocked and your privacy restrictions in place while waiting.
Common situations and the safest response
A racist player is speaking in a live match
Mute the player immediately, capture a PS5 voice clip if it falls within the available 40-second report segment from the last five minutes, or note the time and player name on another service. Block the account, report the voice behavior through the console or game, and leave the match if the abuse continues.
A clip or meme is shared in a gaming group
Report the clip or image itself, not merely the group member’s profile. Ask moderators to remove it, mute the channel, and leave the group if racist material is a recurring feature rather than an isolated violation.
A stranger sends repeated racist direct messages
Do not answer. Save the sender name and message link privately, report the message, block the account, and restrict incoming messages or friend requests to people you approve.
The content uses coded language that your filter misses
Report the post or media and describe the code’s meaning and context in the form. Add the recurring term to your hidden-word list only after confirming that it is not also used harmlessly in conversations you need.
The account posts your address or threatens violence
Do not engage or announce that you are reporting it. Preserve what you can safely, use the platform’s urgent safety route, tell a trusted person, and contact local law enforcement or a safeguarding service when the threat is credible or immediate.

A practical cross-platform checklist
- Mute the player, account, channel or thread.
- Block direct contact and invitations.
- Report every specific racist message, image, video, profile, broadcast, comment or voice segment.
- Use the game’s own report tool for abuse that occurs inside a game.
- Restrict messages, friend requests, parties, replies and mentions to trusted users where possible.
- Enable hidden-word and sensitive-content controls, understanding that they are incomplete.
- Leave servers, groups or threads that repeatedly circulate racist content.
- Store usernames, links, times and safe screenshots privately.
- Escalate imminent threats, doxxing and child targeting through urgent safety and local authorities.
- Never retaliate or amplify slurs in public.
No single physical product is necessary to block racist gaming content across these services. The effective approach is the combination of each platform’s built-in mute, block, filter, privacy and reporting controls, followed by group-level moderation or safety escalation when needed.
